Description

Nov. 12, 1935. G KNAPP 202mm I VALVE MOUNTING FOR REFRIGERATOR COMPRESSORS Filed June 25, 1934 Patented Nov. 12, 1935 UNITE D STATES PATENT OFFICE VALVE MOUNTING ron REFRIGERATOR COMPRESSORS .5 .Claims. (Cl. 230-;228)
The present invention is related to compressors for domestic or household refrigerators, and is concerned particularly with the valves for controlling'the discharge of the refrigerant from the compressor cylinder.
The object of the invention is to provide a novel mounting for the discharge valve and its deck so as to insure proper retention of the deck in the cylinder'head, and prevent displacement of the valve deck from its applied position. The invention, therefore, overcomes the :necessity of frequently overhauling the compressor to repair the valve-and replace its deck and the resultant interruption inthe operationand useof therefrig- "*erator.
A further object of the invention isto so construc't thevalve deck and relate the same to the compressor 'head that the'valve deck readily may be removedor replaced when occasion requires.
Other objectsand advantages soughtto be attained will'appearas the nature of the improvements is better understood, the invention consisting in. the ndvel construction, combination and arrangement of partshereinafter fully described, :illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and
finally'pointed out in the appended claims.
in the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the cylinder of a refrigerator compressor provided with a valve mounting constructed in accordance with the :present invention, the line of section being as at I:I,Fig. 2;.and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the 'cylinder as on the line '22, Fig. l.
Referring now in detail to the accompanying drawing, the numeral! designates the cylinder of a compressor of the typecommonlyemployed' in domestic or household refrigerators, the same being provided with the usual piston I I, and also an inlet port I2 for admitting the refrigerant to the bore of the cylinder. The latter also is provided'with an outlet port .I3 through which the compressed refrigerant is discharged from the cylinder.
Associatedwith the end of the cylinder I B is the customary head I4, provided with radiating fins I5 to assist in the cooling of the head, and the latter is connected to and held upon the open end of the cylinder I0 by means of a series of fastening bolts 16, generally illustrated in Fig. 2. Within the head I4 is a valve chamber I'I aligned with the bore of the cylinder Ill, and in communication with the valve chamber is a cate'with the outlet I3 of the cylinder III, thereby establishing a path of flow for the compressed refrigerant 'f'romthe valve chamber H and the spring-receiving chamber I8 to the outlet I3.
A'valve lll, in the form of a disk, is located in 5 the chamber H, which valve is of slightly less diameter than'the diameter of the chamber, and a coil spring 2| is'seated in the spring-receiving chamber -I8, one end thereof abutting against the valve 20, and the'other end being seated against '10 the head I4, the spring 2.I thereby exerting its pressure to maintain the valve 2!] in contact with its seat. The'latter is constituted by an annular bead '22 which is formed on a valve deck '23. This deck also-is 'in'theiform'of-a disk, andthe same-is provided with a plurality of ports 24 which lie within the area defined by the annular bead 22. The ports '24 afford communication between the bore of the cylinder Ill and. the valve chamber I1, and under the action of the piston II the compressed refrigerant passes through the ports 24 tothe valve chamber I .I, the valve 23 beingthereby unseated against the'pressure of the spring 2 I, and permitting the compressed refrigerant to flow around the edges of the valve 2!] into the valve chamberI 'L the'spring-receiving chamber l8, and out through the duct l9 to the outlet I3.
In refrigerator compressors-of the construction and type above described, 'it is essential that the valve deck be retained on the cylinder head and 30 prevented from displacement from its applied position thereon. Otherwise, it is frequently necessary to overhaul the compressor in order to repair the valve and'replace the deck which may become displacedfrom its position on'the cylinder head, all of which results in interruption in the used the refrigerator and its operation. In this connection it is to be observed that the valve deck 23 has a diameter which is coextensive with the diameter of the head I4, and also with the end {of the cylinder IE to which the head 14 is applied. It is also provided with a port 25 designed'to register with the outlet '13 of the cylinder and with which port the duct I9 likewise communicates. That the valve deck may be retained on the cylinder head and prevented from displacement therefrom, a plurality of fastening pins 26 is employed. These fastening pins, preferably, are brass escutcheon pins the heads of which are round, and said pins are received by a plurality of registering holes 21 which are drilled in the cylinder head I4 and in the valve deck 23. They are positioned adjacent the marginal portions of both the head I4 and the valve deck 23. The outer ends of the holes 21 which terminate in the face of the valve deck are countersunk; In mounting the valve deck 23 on the cylinder head M the pins 26 are driven into the holes 21 with a snug fit' and the round heads of the 5 pins are peened down so as to fit within the countersinks of the holes 21, thus securely fastening the valve deck 23 onto the cylinder head I4, and preventing displacement of the valve deck. Removal of the latter may be effected by boring out the pins 26, should repair or replacement be required. After the valve deck 23 has been secured onto the cylinder head I 4 by the pins 26 in the manner described, the surface of the valve deck is ground by any suitable means so as to bring that surface and the pins into the same plane to permit proper application of the head Hi to the'cylinder III.
A common packing gasket 28 is interposed between the valve deck 23 and the cylinder l0, and a similar gasket 29 is interposed between the head I4 and the valve deck 23 to obtain tight joints between these parts.
By the employment of the herein described invention there is provided a novel mounting for 25, the discharge valve and its deck which insures proper retention of the deck on the cylinder head and prevents displacement of the valve deck from its applied position. The deck 23 is securely and firmly held to its seat on the head l4, and
Q necessity for frequently overhauling the compressor to repair the valve and replace its seat is overcome.
While the invention has been described particularly with reference to compressors for domestic or household refrigerators, it is apparent that its use is not restricted to this field, but the same is capable of employment in and adaptation to compressors of other types where it is desired to maintain the decks of the valves in 40 :proper applied position.
The invention herein described and claimed is to be distinguished from the subject-matter of my co-pending application Serial No. 732,225, filed June 25, 1934, wherein the valve deck is set .:within that face of the cylinder head which contacts the cylinder, the outer face of the valve deck lying flush with the face of the head. In the present disclosure the valve deck is co-extensive in diameter with the diameter of both the compressor head and compressor cylinder and is positioned therebetween.
