The present invention is related to compressors for domestic or household refrigerators, and is concerned particularly with the valves for controlling the disoharge of the refrigerant from the compressor cylinder.
The object of the invention is to provide a novel mounting for the discharge valve and its deck so as to insure proper retention of the deck in the cylinder head, and prevent displacement .;of the valve deck from its applied position. The invention, therefore, overcomes the necessity of frequently overhauling the compressor to repair the Valve and replace its deck and the resultant interruption in the operation and use of the 1 'crefrigerator.
Other objects and advantages sought to be attained will appear as the nature of the improvements is better understood, the invention consisting in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and finally pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring now in. detail to the accompanying drawing, the numeral l0 designates the cylinder of a compressorof the type commonly employed in domestic orhousehold refrigerators, the same ,being provided with the usual piston H, and also an inlet port l2 for admitting the refrigerant to the bore of the cylinder. The latter also is provided with anoutletport l3 through which the compressed refrigerant is discharged from the cylinder.
Associated with the end of the cylinder I0 is the customary head I4, provided with radiating fins l5 to assist in the cooling of the-head, and the latter is connected to and held upon the openend of the cylinder H] by means of a series of fastening bolts it, generally illustrated in Fig. 2.
Withinthe head I4 is a valve chamber l1 aligned with the bore of the cylinder l0, and in'communication with the valve member I1 is a springreceiving chamber [8. From the chamber [8 an exhaust duct l9 extends so as to communicate with the outlet it of the cylinder l0, thereby es- I tablishing a path of flow for the compressed refrigerant from the valve chamber l1 and the spring-receiving chamber I8 to the outlet IS.
A valve 20, inthe form of a disk, is located in the chamber H, which valve is of slightly less diameter than the diameter of the chamber, and 5 a coil spring 2! is seated in the spring-receiving chamber l8, one end thereof abutting against the valve 20, and the other end being seated against, the head M, the spring 21 thereby exerting its pressure to maintain the valve 20 in contact with 10 its seat. The latter is constituted by an annular bead 22 which is formed on a valve deck 23. This deck also is in the form of a disk, and the same is provided with a plurality of ports 24 which lie within the area defined by the annular bead 22. 16 The ports 24 afford communication. between the bore of the cylinder l0 and the valve chamber El, and under the action of the piston H the compressed refrigerant passes through the ports 24 to the valve chamber II, the valve 26 being thereby unseated against the pressure of the spring 2|, and permitting the compressed refrigerant to. flow around the edges of the valve 20 into the valve chamber II, the spring-receiving chamber I8, and out through the duct 59 to the outlet i3. 25
The valve deck 23 is arranged over the valve chamber l1, its edges being fitted into a recess formed in theinner face of the compressor head M which surrounds the chamber H. The deck, therefore, closes the chamber I! and its outer face lies flush with the inner face of the head M to permit the latter to fit against the end of the compressor cylinder l0.
In refrigerator compressors of the construction and type above described, it is essential that the valve deck be retained in the cylinder head and prevented from displacement from its applied position therein. Otherwise, it is frequently necessary to overhaul the compressor in order to repair the valve and replace the deck which may become displaced from its position on the cylinder head, all of which results in interruption in the use of the refrigerator and its operation. To the accomplishment of this end a plurality of fastening pins 25 is employed. These fastening pins, preferably, are brass escutcheon pins the heads of which are round, and said pins are received by a plurality of holes 26 which are drilled in the cylinder head it and in the valve deck 23. In drilling these holes 26 one-half the diameter thereof is drilled in the edges of the valve deck 23 so that in the application of the pins 25 they will be positioned not only in the holes 25 but also will overlap the edges of the valve deck 23 and be received by the 5 .curely and firmly held to portion of the holes 26 formed in the edges of the valve deck. The outer ends of the holes 26 are countersunk. In mounting the valve deck 23 on the cylinder head M the pins 25 are driven into the holes 26 with a snug fit and the round heads of the pins are peened down so as to fit within the countersinks of the holes 26, thus securely fastening the valve deck 23 in the cylinder head M, and preventing displacement of the valve deck. Removal of the latter may be effected by boring out the pins 25, should repair or replacement be required. After the valve deck 23 has been secured in the cylinder head M by the pins 25 in the manner described, the surface of the valve deck and the compressor head are ground by any suitable means so as to bring the head, the deck and the pins into the same plane to permit proper application of the head M to the cylinder ID.
A common packing gasket 21 is interposed between the head M and the cylinder [0 to obtain a tight joint between these parts.
By the employment of the herein described'invention there is provided a novel mounting for the discharge valve and its deck which insures proper retention of the deck in the cylinder head and prevents displacement of the valve deck from its applied position. The deck 23 is seits seat on the head I 4, and necessity for frequently overhauling the compressor to repair the valve and replace its seat is overcome.
While the invention has been described particularly with reference to compressors for domestic or household refrigerators, it is apparent that its use is not restricted to this field, but the same is capable of employment in and adaptation to compressors of other types where it is desired to maintain the decks of the valves in proper applied position.
The invention herein described and claimed is to be distinguished from the subject-matter of my co-pending application Serial No. 732,226, filed June 25, 1934, wherein the valve deck is coextensive in diameter with the diameter of both the compressor head and compressor cylinder and is positioned therebetween. In the present disclosure the valve deck is set within that face of the cylinder head which contacts the cylinder, the outer face of the valve deck lying flush with the face of the head.
I claim:
1. In a valve mounting of the class described, the combination with a compressor cylinder, and the cylinder head, the latter being provided with a valve chamber, a valve arranged in said chamber, and a ported valve deck arranged over said valve chamber and affording communication between the compressor cylinder and the valve chamber, of headed fastening means for retaining the valve deck in position on the cylinder head in associated relation to the valve chamcylinder head, portions'of which fastening means laterally overlap the valve deck and hold the latter in applied position on the cylinder head, and additional fastening means for connecting the cylinder head to the compressor cylinder.

In a valve mounting of the class described, 10 the combination with a compressor cylinder, and the cylinder head, the latter being provided with a valve chamber, a valve arranged in said chamber, and a ported valve deck arranged over said valve chamber and affording communication be 15 tween the compressor cylinder and the valve chamber, of headed fastening devices carried by the cylinder head and having a driven relation thereto to beapplied rigidly to the head, portions of said fastening devices laterally overlap- 20 ping the valve deck to hold the latter in applied position on the cylinder head, and additional fastening devices for connecting the cylinder head to the compressor cylinder.
4. In a valve mounting of the class described, 25 the combination with a compressor cylinder, and the cylinder head, the latter being provided with a valve chamber, a valve arranged in said chamber, and a ported valve deck arranged over said valve chamber and affording communication 30 between the compressor cylinder and the valve chamber, the head being provided with a series of recesses, of headed fastening pins fitted into said recesses and driven therein to be applied rigidly to the head, portions of the heads of said fastening pins laterally overlapping the valve deck to hold the latter in applied position on the cylinder head, and additional fastening means for connecting the cylinder head to the compressor cylinder. 40

In a valve mounting of the class described, the combination with a compressor head having a valve chamber, and a valve arranged in said chamber, of a valve deck arranged over the valve chamber of the compressor head and providing a seat for said valve, the head being provided with a series of recesses, of headed fastening pins fitted 5 into said recesses and driven therein to be applied rigidly to the head, portions of the heads of said fastening pins laterally overlapping the valve deck to hold the latter in applied position on the compressor head, and additional fastening means for connecting the compressor head with a compressor cylinder.
8. In a valve mounting of the class described, the combination with a compressor head having a valve chamber, and a valve arranged in said chamber, of a valve deck arranged over the valve chamber of the compressor head and providing a seat for said valve, the head being provided with a series of recesses, the outer ends of said recesses terminating in countersinks, of headed 2o fastening pins fitted into said recesses and driven therein to be applied rigidly to the head, the heads of said fastening pins being driven into said countersinks laterally overlapping the valve deck to hold the latter in applied position on the 25 compressor head, and additional fastening means for connecting the compressor head with a compressor cylinder. 9. In a valve mounting of the class described, the combination with a compressor head having a 30 valve chamber, and a valve arranged in said chamber, of a valve deck arranged over the valve chamber of the compressor head and providing a seat for said valve, the head and the valve deck having drilled openings therein so that the diameter of said openings extends into 5 both the compressor head and the valve deck, of headed fastening pins fitted into said openings and driven therein to be applied rigidly to the head, the heads of said fastening pins laterally overlapping the valve deck to hold the latter in 10 applied position on'the compressor head, and additional fastening means for connecting the compressor head with a compressor cylinder.
10. In a valve mounting of the class described, the combination with a compressor head having 15 a valve chamber formed in the face thereof to be fitted to the compressor cylinder, and a valve arranged in said chamber, of a ported valve deck seated in said face of the compressor head and arranged over said valve chamber to close the latter, said deck providing a seat for said valve, the head being provided with a series of recesses, fastening pins fitted in said recesses and driven therein to be applied rigidly to the head, portions of said fastening pins laterally overlapping the valve deck to hold the latter in applied position on the cylinder head, and additional fastening means for connecting the cylinder head to the compressor cylinder.
