  • This invention relates generally to rigid-surface carrying cases having internal insert retaining members defining a plurality of receptacles for carrying items within the carrying case, and more particularly to a sewing implement carrying case system having rigid outer clamshell-type members and interchangeable multi-layered insert retaining members retainable within and adapted preferably for use retaining sewing machine implements, such as for example different types of sewing machine feet, tool boxes, bobbins, and other sewing-related tools.
  • BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
  • There are a broad range of types of sewing machines for a likewise broad range of sewing purposes, such as quilting machines, standard fabric sewing machines, machines for sewing heavy-duty fabrics, such as leather, sergers for finishing raw edges on fabric, and computerized machines for embroidery.
  • Further, there are many tools associated with sewing with today's modern sewing machines. One area where there is a wide variety of different types of tools is in the area of sewing machine feet. These might include such tools, attachable to a sewing machine, as: feet for quilting, buttonhole feet, roller feet, hemming feet, feet for assembling patchwork, pintuck feet, couching feet, snap-on feet, and different feet for different types of fabric as well. Also, the various types of sewing machine feet may come in many varying sizes. On average, a particular sewing machine type may have between 30 and 35 different types of sewing machine feet, and some have even more.
  • Other tools, among many, may include bobbins, spools of thread, stitch plates, needles, buttons, seam rippers, scissors of varying sizes, rolling cutting tools, USB storage drives, marking pencils, erasers, measuring tapes, rulers, etc.
  • The number of tools available to those who sew is greatly increased by the fact that there are different and large numbers of tools for a broad range of different types and brands of sewing machines. One machine often differs from another in the types and format of tools usable in connection with the particular machine, such that it would be helpful to keep organized a separate set of tools for each different type of machine that will be used. And while there are tools specific to particular machines, of course there are also tools that are generic to particular sewing-related tasks.
  • Complicating this is desirability of transporting tools safely from one location to another, to swap out certain tools in a case with other tools necessary for a remote project, etc., while keeping intact basic tools needed for sewing jobs generally. Thus, it may be desirable to have both a “traveling set” of sewing tools and a “stay-at-home set” of sewing tools, or, it may be advantageous to have a set of generic tools in a particular carrying case that may be matched with a more specific set of tools for one sewing machine type or another. Therefore, it would be advantageous to be able to mix and match tools, including specific and more generic tools, together with whatever sewing machine scenario tailors/seamstresses find themselves in.
  • In the past those who sew have had a difficult time transporting all of these tools in a safe, secure, flexible, tailored-to-the-occasion, and non-damaging, way. Many have just thrown these various tools in a bag, such as a leather satchel, and this has led to frustration in trying to find the right tool when it is needed, this has led to damage of the tools, and this has even resulted in injury upon the user's rummaging around in the bag to find the right tool.
  • Regardless of the type of sewing machine and/or more general tools needed, there has been needed an improved sewing implement carrying case system for safely carrying a sewist's tools while protecting them from damage and the sewist from injury. Preferably such a system would enable mixing and matching of tools as needed for various projects, and preferably such a system would be easy to use and modify for various projects, whereas tools would also be preferably very easily accessible.
  • Such a system would save time and money for those who sew, as well as address the common frustration of not having the right tools at one's disposal when the tool is needed. Also, such a system would prevent damage to sometimes expensive and difficult-to-obtain tools. Still further, such a system would help artisan sewists to create projects with greater freedom, clarity, and creativity, since the wide variety of tools needed for particular projects would be organized and right at the user's fingertips, regardless of which type of sewing machine, or which type of project, is encountered.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • In accordance with an aspect of the disclosure, there is provided a sewing implement carrying case system, comprising: a clamshell-type rigid case member comprising mating perimeter portions and comprising a hinged area on a perimeter portion and an opening area on another perimeter portion; enclosure means for optionally maintaining the case member with the perimeter portions engaged in a closed position adapted for retaining contents held within the case member; a plurality of interchangeable inserts removably retainable within the case member, each insert defining a plurality of receptacles, the receptacles adapted for organized retention of a plurality of implements within the case member for easy selection and removal when the case member is open and for transport when the case member is closed; and a handle attached to at least one of the portions of the case member.
  • In an embodiment, and in accordance with an aspect of the disclosure, the case member optionally comprises hinged clamshell-type portions of differing depths, each case member clamshell-type portion adapted for removably retaining one or more interchangeable inserts stacked in the case member portion, at least one of the plurality of interchangeable inserts being removably retainable with a compression fit within the case member, wherein the means for optionally maintaining the case member with the perimeter portions engaged in a closed position comprises a zipper enclosure extending around the opening area on the perimeter portion of each case member clamshell-type portion. In those cases where there are different depths of the clamshell-type portions, this allows accommodation for one insert on one side of the case and a plurality of inserts on another side of the case. A pocketed divider, also preferably containing zippered compartments, may also be provided with the divider.
  • Further, preferably, the receptacles for each carrying case insert are designed for retention of sewing implements, such as different styles of presser feet, bobbins, spools of thread, needles, scissors, etc. Further, preferably in an embodiment, case member is one of comprised of a certain material emitting a certain predominant color and covered in a fabric emitting the certain predominant color, for example substantially black or substantially white for the case member, and wherein the zipper enclosure and associated exposed zipper fabric emits a different certain contrasting predominant color relative to the predominant color emitted from the case member and that contrasts with the case member color by a ratio of at least 3:1 relative luminance. This contrasting color configuration of the case member portions, together with the zipper enclosure and a preferably fabric hinge, gives the case member system a distinctive look suggestive of a sewing case.
  • Further, in accordance with this aspect of the disclosure, there is proved a sewing implement carrying case system wherein the hinge area of the case member is comprised of a durable fabric. This feature makes for a durable and flexible hinge, while at the same time granting the possibility of a wide variety of color designs for the carrying case which may suggest a theme of creation and sewing on account of particular designs chosen for the sewing implement carrying case system.
  • In accordance with another aspect of the disclosure, there is further provided a plurality of sewing implement carrying case systems, wherein each of the plurality of sewing implement carrying case systems has differing outer dimensions, thickness wise, from thickness dimensions of another sewing implement carrying case system of the plurality of sewing implement carrying case systems. In this way, those who sew are enabled in mixing and matching a plurality of interchangeable inserts of any sewing implement carrying case system with those of another sewing implement carrying case system, and in this way be able to customize the number of inserts needed for a particular job. Thus, one job may suitably require two inserts filled with tools, whereas another may require three or four inserts filled with tools. Since the inserts are lightly force-fit retained in each of their respective carrying case portions, they are removable to allow mixing and matching, to allow easier access at home or at a remote job site, or for central storage outside of a case. Then, sewists are enabled in putting one or more inserts into an appropriate-width case to minimize bulk in travel while enabling transport of needed tools and materials.
  • In accordance with another aspect of the disclosure, one, or preferably, all of the plurality of interchangeable inserts is comprised of multi-layered polymer foam wherein at least one of the upper layers of polymer foam has the receptacles defined therein, and wherein a base enclosing layer of the multi-layered polymer foam interchangeable insert is comprised of a more dense polymer foam than another layer. In such a situation, the upper layers of polymer may be comprised of a spongier, softer, less-dense, polyurethane type foam as is known in the industry, and the base enclosing layer may be comprised of a more-dense, harder, polyethylene type foam to give the user greater structure when lifting, holding, and transporting sometimes heavier tools, such as 10 or 15 presser feet, to prevent such heavier tools from breaking through the bottom of the polymer foam insert.
  • Thus, further, it will be understood that the base enclosing layer, for example made of a more durable polyethylene type foam, typically would not have receptacles defined therein, the base enclosing layer imparting enhanced structural properties to facilitate retention of heavier articles, the base enclosing layer and the at least one upper layer polymer foam layer being bonded together, as with glue.
  • Further, in accordance with an aspect of the disclosure, the multi-layer inserts for each sewing implement carrying case system perferably comprise an upper velvet layer having matching receptacles cut therein communicating with the receptacles of the at least one upper polymer foam layer of the interchangeable insert that is adjacent and beneath the velvet layer. Such a velvet layer imparts a pleasing finished look to the insert, for beautifully displaying retained tools, and is more durable and resistant to damage than some foam materials.
  • In accordance with another aspect of the disclosure, there is provided a sewing implement carrying case system, wherein the handle of the system is attached more closely adjacent the hinge area of the case member than the opening area of the case member. This configuration of the handle provides a distinctive look, together with other aspects and embodiments of the disclosure, as well as it serves as a visual reminder to, for example, zipper close the sewing implement carrying case system before picking it up and thereby dropping contents out onto the floor.
  • Thus, in accordance with one or more of the foregoing aspects of the disclosure, there is provided an embodiment of a sewing implement carrying case system, comprising: a clamshell-type rigid case member having mating perimeter portions (e.g., as comprising mating concave bowl, or shell-type, members, the concave bowl, or shell-type, members preferably being substantially rectangular in shape) and comprising a fabric hinged area on a perimeter portion and an opening area on another perimeter portion. The sewing implement carrying case system of this embodiment comprises a zipper enclosure means on the opening area adapted for, together with the fabric hinged area, optionally maintaining the case member with the mating perimeter portions engaged in a closed position retaining sewing machine tool contents held within the case member. Further, the zipper enclosure means is also adapted for optionally maintaining the case member with the mating perimeter portions separated in an opened position displaying for access the sewing machine tool contents held within the case member. Preferably, the case member portions and the zipper enclosure means are selected of materials, such as fabrics or other materials, wherein the case member is one of comprised of a certain material emitting a certain predominant color and covered in a fabric emitting the certain predominant color, and wherein the zipper enclosure means and associated exposed zipper enclosure fabric emits a different certain predominant color relative to the predominant color emitted from the case member, wherein the colors contrast by a ratio of at least 3:1 relative luminance, so as to give the sewing implement carrying case system a certain pop. Thus, it is conceivable that cases of a certain size and interchangeability may also be color-coordinated, such as with a black case member and a lime green zipper and associated exposed zipper fabric, or a white case member with a fuscia zipper and associated exposed zipper fabric, and thus the plurality of case members may be made to correspond with one another and a particular brand of tools carried within.
  • The case member system of the present embodiment further comprises a plurality of interchangeable inserts each comprised of multi-layered polymer foam layers, wherein each interchangeable insert comprises multiple layers of differing density polymer foam, and each interchangeable insert being removably retainable within a clamshell-type portion of the case member with a compression fit within the case member. Further, with this embodiment, at least one of the interchangeable inserts, but preferably all of them, define a plurality of receptacles adapted for organized retention of a plurality of sewing articles, tools, and/or implements, within the case member for display, selection and removal when the case member is open, and for transport when the case member is closed; and a handle attached to at least one of the portions of the case member.
  • As with previously-described aspects and embodiments, the sewing implement carrying case system of embodiment provides a case member which comprises clamshell-type portions of the same, or alternatively differing, depths, each case member clamshell-type portion being adapted for removably retaining one or more of the interchangeable inserts stacked in the case member portion, depending upon the depth of the clamshell-type portion provided.
  • This latter embodiment of the sewing implement carrying case system may also be provided as part of a plurality of such sewing implement carrying case systems, wherein each of the plurality of sewing implement carrying case systems has differing outer dimensions from dimensions of another sewing implement carrying case system of the plurality of sewing implement carrying case systems, and wherein any one of the plurality of interchangeable inserts of any sewing implement carrying case system is removably retainable in any other sewing implement carrying case system of the plurality of sewing implement carrying case systems. For such interchangeability, sewing implement carrying case system of different thicknesses are contemplated, but it is also the case that there may be provided sewing implement carrying case systems of different peripheral dimensions, some smaller and some larger, to likewise accommodate different sizes and quantities of tool sets.
  • As with a previously-described embodiment of the sewing implement carrying case system, in accordance with the latter-described embodiment, it is provided that one, or preferably more, of the multi-layer interchangeable inserts of the sewing implement carrying case system comprises a base enclosing layer comprised of a more-dense polymer foam, such as polyethylene foam, than another layer of polymer foam, such as polyurethane foam, the base enclosing layer being bonded to the another layer of less-dense polymer foam, the base enclosing layer imparting enhanced structural properties to facilitate retention of heavier sewing articles.
  • In accordance with this latter embodiment of the disclosure, there is provided that the handle of the sewing implement carrying case system may be attached more closely adjacent the hinge area of the case member than the opening area of the case member, as has been previously described in connection with another embodiment.
  • Further, in accordance with another aspect of the disclosure, and regardless of which of the foregoing embodiments of the sewing implement carrying case system is considered, there is provided that at least one of the plurality of interchangeable inserts comprises a cutout portion positioned at a peripheral area, preferably a corner area, so that when the insert is removably retained with a carrying case portion, the aforementioned cutout portion forms a larger opening, partially enclosed by the insert and partially enclosed with a wall of the case member. This larger opening is adapted for use in that a user is enabled to insert the user's finger into the opening, and upon insertion of the user's finger into the opening, the user is supported in overcoming the compression fit between the interchangeable insert and the case member wall, thus facilitating easy removal of the interchangeable insert.
  • The sewing implement carrying case systems of the foregoing described various aspects and embodiments of the disclosure provide a carrying cases and systems that are flexibly organizable, and whether comprising larger or smaller sewing implement carrying case systems, to meet the large variety of situations and tools sets presented by today's modern sewing environments.
  • The subject matter of the present invention is particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed in the concluding portion of this specification. However, both the organization and method of operation, together with further advantages and objects thereof, may best be understood by reference to the following descriptions taken in connection with accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters refer to like elements.

A two-sided pocketed divider 34 a, 34 b, also preferably containing zippered compartments 36, segmented elastic holding members 38, and other non-zippered compartments 40, may also be provided with the divider.
  • Referring specifically to FIGS. 6-8, further, preferably, the receptacles 26 a-26 h for the carrying case inserts are designed for retention of sewing implements, such as different styles of sewing machine feet 26 a, bobbins 26 h, spools of thread 26 b, specialized tools/feet 26 g, toolboxes 26 e, scissors 26 d (or a 6-inch ruler), etc. Further, preferably in an embodiment, the case member 12 is one of comprised of a certain material emitting a certain predominant color and covered in a fabric emitting the certain predominant color, for example substantially black or substantially white for the case member, and wherein the zipper enclosures 22 are attached with the zipper fabric 30 on the outside of the case member portions 14, 16 so that the fabric is showing and emits a different certain contrasting predominant color relative to the predominant color emitted from the case member and that contrasts with the case member color by a ratio of at least 3:1 relative luminance. This contrasting color configuration of the case member portions 14, 16 together with the zipper enclosure 22, 30, and a preferably fabric hinge 18, gives the case member system a distinctive look suggestive of a sewing implement carrying case system 10. The feature of having a fabric hinge 18 also makes for a durable and flexible hinge 18, while at the same time granting the possibility of a wide variety of color designs for the sewing implement carrying case system 10 which may suggest a theme of creation and sewing on account of particular designs chosen for the sewing implement carrying case system.
  • In accordance with another aspect of the disclosure, as shown in FIG. 10, there is further provided a plurality of sewing implement carrying case systems 10, 10′, 10″ and 90, 90′, 90″, wherein each of the plurality of sewing implement carrying case systems has differing outer dimensions, thickness wise, from thickness dimensions of another sewing implement carrying case system 10, 90 of the plurality of sewing implement carrying case systems. In this way, tailors/seamstresses are enabled in mixing and matching a plurality of interchangeable inserts of any sewing implement carrying case system 10, 10′, 10″, 90, 90′, 90″ with those of another sewing implement carrying case system, and in this way be able to customize the number of inserts needed for a particular job. Thus, one job may suitably require two inserts, as provided by 10″ or 90″ filled with tools, whereas another may require three inserts, as provided by 10 or 90, or four inserts, as provided by 10′, or 90′, filled with tools.
  • Since each insert 24 a, 24 b, 24 c is lightly force-fit retained in each of their respective carrying case portions 14, 16, they are removable to allow mixing and matching, to allow easier access at home or at a remote job site, or for central storage outside of a sewing implement carrying case system 10, 90. Then, tailors/seamstresses are enabled in putting one or more inserts 24 a, 24 b, 24 c into an appropriate- width case 14, 16 to minimize bulk in travel while enabling transport of needed tools and materials.
  • Referring specifically to FIGS. 6-8, in accordance with an aspect of the disclosure, one, or preferably, all of the plurality of interchangeable inserts 24 a, 24 b, 24 c is comprised of multi-layered polymer foam wherein at least one of the upper layers 40 a, 40 b, 40 c of polymer foam has one or more of the receptacles 26 a-26 g defined therein, and wherein a base enclosing layer 42 a, 42 b, 42 c of the multi-layered polymer foam interchangeable insert 24 a, 24 b, 24 c, respectively, is comprised of a more dense polymer foam than another layer. In such a situation, the upper layers 40 a, 40 b, 40 c of polymer may be comprised of a spongier, softer, less-dense, polyurethane type foam as is known in the industry, and the base enclosing layer 42 a, 42 b, 42 c may be comprised of a more-dense, harder, polyethylene type foam to give the tailor/seamstress greater structure when lifting, holding, and transporting sometimes heavier tools, such as 10 or 15 presser feet retained in an insert, to prevent such heavier tools from breaking through the bottom of the polymer foam insert.
  • Thus, further, it will be understood that the base enclosing layer 42 a, 42 b, 42 c, for example made of a more durable polyethylene type foam, typically would not have receptacles 26 a-26 g defined therein, the base enclosing layer imparting enhanced structural properties to facilitate retention of heavier articles, the base enclosing layer and the at least one upper layer polymer foam layer 40 a, 40 b, 40 c being bonded together, as with glue.
  • Further, in accordance with an aspect of the disclosure, the multi-layer inserts 24 a, 24 b, 24 c for each sewing implement carrying case system 10, 90 perferably comprise an upper velvet layer 44 a, 44 b, 44 c having matching receptacles 26 a-26 g cut therein communicating with the receptacles 26 a-26 g of the at least one upper polymer foam layer 40 a, 40 b, 40 c, respectively, of the interchangeable insert that is adjacent and beneath the velvet layer. Such a velvet layer 44 a, 44 b, 44 c imparts a pleasing finished look to each insert 24 a, 24 b, 24 c, for beautifully displaying retained tools, and is more durable and resistant to damage than some foam materials.
  • In accordance with another aspect of the disclosure, there is provided a sewing implement carrying case system 10, 90, wherein the handle 28 (FIG. 1) of the system is attached more closely adjacent the hinge area 18 of the case member 12 than the opening area 20 of the case member. • In accordance with another aspect of the disclosure, and regardless of which of the foregoing embodiments of the sewing implement carrying case system 10, 90 is considered, there is provided that preferably each of the plurality of interchangeable inserts 24 a, 24 b, 24 c comprises a cutout portion 46 positioned at a peripheral area, preferably a corner area and cutting into layers 40 a, 40 b, 40 c, 41 a, 41 b, 41 c, 42 a, 42 b, 42 c, respectively of each interchangeable insert, so that when the insert is removably retained with a carrying case portion 14, 16, the aforementioned cutout portion 46 forms a larger opening 48, partially enclosed by the insert and partially enclosed with a wall 50 of the case member 12. This larger opening 48 is adapted for use in that a user is enabled to insert the user's finger into the opening, and upon insertion of the user's finger into the opening, the user is supported in overcoming the compression fit between the interchangeable insert 24 a, 24 b, 24 c and the case member portions 14, 16, thus facilitating easy removal of the interchangeable inserts.
  • Referring now specifically to FIG. 6, it may be seen that there is preferably comprised, encompassed about by a raised wall area 32, or layer 40 a, a plurality of receptacles, such as receptacle 26 a for different types of presser feet (each for different types of jobs and for different types of materials), receptacle 26 b for spools of thread (or additional feet), receptacle 26 c for stitch plates (for example one for single hole stitch plates, one for embroidery, one for other miscellaneous stitch plate tool types), receptacle 26 d for scissors (or a 1×6 ruler, a tailor seam guide, or other sewing machine-style accessory), receptacle 26 e for toolboxes (or other specialty sewing machine feet), and receptacle 26 g for a walking foot-type sewing machine tool, for example. Further, in receptacle 26 g, it will be appreciated that there may be provided an insert within an insert, and such may be implemented to accommodate even a wider variety of specialty tool types for particular sewing situations. Further, there are provided for interchangeable layered insert 24 a, other layers, namely a velvet layer 44 a, a raised wall layer 40 a (of moderate density polymer foam), a moderate density polymer foam intermediate base layer 41 a, and a more dense polymer foam base enclosing layer 42 a. While the more dense enclosing base layer 42 a does not have receptacles cut into it, receptacles are cut into both the intermediate base layer 41 a and the velvet layer 44 a, such that the receptacles will communicate coextensively between the velvet layer and the intermediate base layer. The raised wall area 32, 40 a is to provide additional clearance for the tools as may be necessary to prevent the case member 12 from impacting them.
  • Referring now specifically to FIG. 7, there is preferably provided a plurality of differently-sized presser feet receptacles 26 a. These receptacles help those who sew to accommodate the upwards of 30 differently available types of feet or more. Further, there are provided for interchangeable layered insert 24 b, other layers, namely a velvet layer 44 b, an upper foam layer 40 b (of moderate density polymer foam), a moderate density polymer foam intermediate base layer 41 b, and a more dense polymer foam base enclosing layer 42 b. While the more dense enclosing base layer 42 b does not have receptacles cut into it, receptacles are cut into the velvet layer 44 b and one or more of the upper foam layer 40 b, and the intermediate base layer 41 b, such that the receptacles will communicate coextensively between the velvet layer and one, or both (depending on the depth of receptacle and resulting cushioning desired) the upper foam layer and the intermediate base layer. Thus, the receptacles will typically, preferably (though not absolutely necessarily depending on what retaining shape is desired for the receptacle) communicate coextensively between the velvet layer 44 b and those of the upper foam layer 40 b and the intermediate base layer 41 b into which the receptacle is defined or cut.
  • Referring now specifically to FIG. 8, there is preferably provided a plurality of differently-sized presser feet receptacles 26 a, a plurality of bobbin receptacles 26 h, and a buttonhole foot receptacle 26 f, since virtually every sewing machine brand has such an implement, and each such implement has a similar shape. Further, there are provided for interchangeable layered insert 24 c, other layers, namely a velvet layer 44 c, an upper foam layer 40 c (of moderate density polymer foam), a moderate density polymer foam intermediate base layer 41 c, and a more dense polymer foam base enclosing layer 42 c. While the more dense base enclosing layer 42 c does not have receptacles cut into it, receptacles are cut into the velvet layer 44 c and one or more of the upper foam layer 40 c, and the intermediate base layer 41 c, such that the receptacles will communicate coextensively between the velvet layer and one, or both (depending on the depth of receptacle and resulting cushioning desired) the upper foam layer and the intermediate base layer. Thus, the receptacles will typically, preferably (though not absolutely necessarily depending on what retaining shape is desired for the receptacle) communicate coextensively between the velvet layer 44 c and those of the upper foam layer 40 c and the intermediate base layer 41 c into which the receptacle is defined or cut.
