Description

    OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
  • The object of the present invention is to obtain a toilet bowl that allows different positions of use, for defecation as well urination.
  • The invention begins with a toilet bowl with a traditional structure, which, by means of several slight modifications, without changing the essential configuration and elements, allows the desired objective to be achieved, maintaining the couplings and connections that are shared with traditional toilet bowls as we know them today.
  • The present invention therefore offers a toilet bowl with two foot supports on its sides, each one on one side of the body of the bowl, obtaining with said foot supports a multi-purpose sanitary fixture that combines the features of a traditional toilet bowl and a squat toilet, allowing the user to use the invention both as a traditional toilet (with the feet on the floor) and as a squat toilet (with the feet on the foot supports); and thus equipping the traditional squat toilet at floor level with a more hygienic elevated platform, which also allows a more comfortable squatting position for the user, because they can rest their buttocks on the mouth of the bowl of said toilet and/or use it in the same position without resting the buttocks on the mouth of the bowl.
  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • Currently, different types of toilet bowls and squat toilets, predominant in the West and East, respectively, are known. So much so that, for example, in countries where the two cultures of the use of these toilets converge, either due to tourism or the characteristics of the population, hygiene conflicts arise, especially in public restrooms, which must use informational signs to remind users of the proper and conventional use of the toilet bowl and the prohibition of using it in another manner, where there are users who climb up on the mouth of the bowl to defecate or urinate, causing deterioration and damage to the device and its installation, in addition to dirtying the floor and the mouth of the bowl, creating a serious problem for its use.
  • The first attempts to offer a dual-function toilet appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. For example, the WATER CLOSET (U.S. Pat. No. 1,243,148 A) filed on Aug. 1, 1917, and granted on Oct. 16, 1917, consisted of a very modern toilet that considered even the application in train stations, and which consisted of a hopper, to prevent splashing and odors, which provided a double position for the user to urinate while standing defecate while seated on the mouth of said WC by climbing onto two ledges to adapt a wooden seat, or to protect the arms for the buttocks with paper and fabric for the cold. The most notable drawbacks of this invention are, first, the complexity of use, since the user must adopt an uncomfortable and complex position to defecate, in addition to being completely non-hygienic in public places, because users must insert their buttocks inside the mouth of the WC intended for defecation.
  • In that same first half of the 20th century, the history of the WC offered an accessory for toilet bowls, U.S. Pat. No. 1,798,632 (filed on Mar. 31, 1931) which was intended to serve as a movable platform to rest the legs, in order to allow the user to squat to defecate, consisting of a folding platform accessory with an angled U shape, to adapt to the neck of the toilet hopper with a fork to affix it. There are several drawbacks to the use of this invention, such as the inconvenience of putting it on and taking it off to use the toilet bowl in a traditional manner, as well as the accumulation of dirt between the accessory and the toilet bowl, since they do not form a single body, and the insecurity of the feet because they are in an inclined position.
  • Recently, the market has offered accessories that adapt to traditional toilet bowls, but that are not anchored to said bowl by any system, acting as a stool, which in addition to difficult disinfection of the joints and seams between the toilet bowl and the accessory, present an additional drawback when these boosters are not equipped with an anchoring device, because it makes them impractical due to the movement and sliding when they are used, potentially causing the user to slip and fall, in addition to being unthinkable for use in public restrooms.
  • In the second half of the 20th century, there was a proliferation of inventions in the United States that attempted to present a dual-mode device to adapt to a single WC stall, since many of the country's train stations and hotels even had two types of restrooms: “Western style” and “Eastern style”. U.S. Pat. No. 4,012,797 (filed on Mar. 22, 1977), proposes a toilet for homes or for WC in aircraft and other means of transportation (which later, in the 21st century, was improved EP 20150196817). The drawbacks of this invention are, as in the earlier inventions, the limited and difficult disinfection that involves the need to place the adapter cover for the mouth of the seated toilet, for traditional use in the seated position with the feet on the floor, especially in public or transport restrooms, and the uncomfortable location of the fixed handholds, serving as lateral handles next to the mouth of the toilet bowl, which makes it uncomfortable for the user to adopt the seated position. As mentioned before, the state of the art offers EP 20150196817, a dual-mode water closet for passengers on board means of transport, similar to the water closet U.S. Pat. No. 4,012,797, in the form of a complete water closet, wherein its handholds are likewise fixed and lateral, but installed on the side wall of the water closet.
  • Also, U.S. Pat. No. 5,987,657 (filed on Aug. 27, 1998), wherein the invention proposed a toilet with footrests, characterized in that its toilet bowl had a curved design and a splash guard. The main drawback of this invention lies in that it does not have any type of handhold or handle, so when it is used while squatting, the user is uncomfortable and insecure because they must remain balanced on said footrests at a height above the floor, with the danger of falling forward from the support height, and the non-hygienic nature of the position, because the user, as in earlier inventions, fits into the mouth of the bowl.
  • The attempts at presenting a toilet device that combines the squatting and seated positions proliferated in the 21st century, although, as we will see, none of these offers a solution that is easily adapted to our needs that combines the design with possibility of installation in restroom, and that also does not represent a radical change in our conception of a WC in terms of its traditional design, allowing for simple use, without rejection by the user, and perfect disinfection that provides safe use, and with the feeling of being seated on a traditional toilet bowl.
  • US2011/0179563, presents a squat toilet with a seat, attempting to adapt the squat toilet to the seated functions of a toilet bowl, so this invention offers different positions, always framed within the use of a squat toilet, with or without resting the buttocks on the surface, as well as a fixed squat toilet cover that allows use in a position that is the inverse of the traditional position, in order to attempt to flex the bowel zone more. The drawbacks mentioned before, in this invention remain unsolved: the limited hygiene of this type of use, for example in a public restroom, where the user is in the squatting position at floor level, generates rejection in westernized societies, and it also is not equipped with a handle to facilitate use in the squatting position for people who are not experienced in using it, who have limited mobility or balance; in addition to these drawbacks is the need to move and position the cover of the toilet to use the horizontal cover for use in the seated position, as was the case with U.S. Pat. No. 4,012,797.
  • Another invention, DE 102014002367 A1, innovates by offering a WC with two elevations at different heights to assume the squatting position. Once again, this invention fails to solve the previous drawbacks: in the first place because the squatting position of use is uncomfortable, and also unstable, because the invention is not equipped with any type of handhold or similar element. In addition, since it has two different types of heights for the squatting position, it reduces the space that the user needs for comfort, and these elevations, along with the cover mechanism that is needed to use them, make the invention a device that is difficult to disinfect, in addition to the complexity of adapting it and installing it in general and public restrooms.
  • Other devices consider the support surface elevated above the floor based on folding wings, as in the case of CN20161116, US14658498 B1. Nevertheless, these inventions have the drawback of offering little stability to the users with average physical fitness, because they are positioned at a height above the floor with no type of handhold or handle, with the user relying totally on balance, as was the case with U.S. Pat. No. 5,987,657.
  • The present invention therefore tries to offer a solution to the problems and drawbacks of the State of the Art for the sector of dual-mode toilets for use both while sitting with the feet on the floor, as well as while squatting, that does not renounce the traditional toilet bowl model, by proposing a multi-purpose WC device with a traditional toilet bowl to which certain modifications have been made, without the need for covers to adapt the mouth of the toilet, which presents a toilet bowl with foot support for multi-purpose use, adapted to the physical needs that naturally require assuming the squatting position, whose functionality has two models of adaptation: The pre-formed toilet bowl, to provide a bowl that is mostly for household use, as it is made from the same mold and material, with no type of joints or seams between the main body of the toilet bowl and the foot supports, with a simple folding handle on the front, allows it to be used comfortably, safely and hygienically; as well as a 2nd model of the modified toilet bowl offered by the invention, based on a toilet bowl with the traditional shape and size, which allows packaging, stockpiling, and transport to the installation site in the identical manner as with traditional toilet bowl on the market, which, after installation in its final location, has several solid pre-formed bars inserted into it “in situ” into the openings on its sides, to form the foot support platforms, which, together with the folding handle on the front of the mouth of the toilet bowl, to safely maintain balance, form a multi-purpose, simple, practical, hygienic, low-cost, and easy to use assembly, especially for public restrooms. One very important aspect is that both models are equipped with a means to ensure the balance of the user, because the foot supports of the two models have a ridge and non-slip material, respectively; and thanks to a folding handle, inserted into the openings in the front part of the toilet bowl, the invention can be used safely and practically, and the grab bars secured to the walls of the compartment also facilitate use while squatting in the inverted position, and above all, the easy cleaning and disinfection of the toilet bowl that is preserved by the structural simplicity of the traditional toilets that are currently installed in our homes and public restrooms.
  • DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
  • To achieve the indicated purpose, the invention adds two foot supports to the traditional toilet bowl, located one on each side of the toilet bowl, approximately 10 centimeters from the mouth of said bowl, which allows users to adopt the natural position of humans to defecate in a bent squatting position, with the possibility of supporting their buttons on the mouth of the bowl, so that it is not tiring to adopt the aforementioned position, and likewise, making it compatible with the method of use as a traditional toilet bowl and/or squat toilet; and therefore obtaining a multipurpose, comfortable, hygienic and functional bowl that facilitates the activation of the muscular zone of the bowels to be able to regulate the physiological action of defecation; and thus to attempt to reactivate the entire evacuation system, which, according to doctors, should be re-implemented to prevent many intestinal problems, because the “squatting position” is the natural position for evacuation from thousands of years ago until recent decades in the western world.
  • In addition, the invention will allow, for example, in public restrooms, where people who, by necessity, defecate or urinate with their legs in the seated position, can use the foot supports that the invention proposes, to adopt the squat toilet position, thus allowing them to avoid any unwanted and direct contact with the mouth of the bowl of the public toilet; which means that any person may defecate or urinate in an elevated position, in a comfortable and hygienic position, inside the toilet bowl, without splashing towards the outside.
  • To do this, in a first embodiment of the invention, the two foot supports of the device form part of the toilet bowl, forming a single body, made with the same mold and material. In a second embodiment that the invention proposes, the two foot supports of the device are made up by a variable number of pre-formed bars for insertion into the sides of the toilet bowl, preferable coated, on the flat part, with a non-slip material.
  • In this second embodiment of the invention, the toilet bowl is modified, on each of its sides, by two series of openings, with a semi-cylindrical and rectangular parallelepiped shape, to insert a solid pre-formed bar with the same geometric shape, preferably made of metal, into each one of said openings, perpendicular to the side of the body of said modified bowl, in order to use the invention as a squat toilet. Said solid pre-formed bar preferably has a semi-cylindrical and rectangular parallelepiped geometric shape. This second embodiment achieves more practical commercialization and transport, reducing the packing space, because the size of said modified toilet bowl is the same as that of the current traditional bowl, because the solid pre-formed bars will be inserted “in situ” to form the lateral foot support platforms, after the modified toilet bowl has been fully installed in its final location.
  • Also, the models proposed by the invention may also be equipped in addition with a folding handle, incorporated in the same way into the two models, so that, in the position for use as a squat toilet, the user will raise said folding handle and can support themselves on it to maintain balance and exert greater force, if the defecation or the capabilities of the user require it (the elderly, obese, etc.). To do this, both toilets, on each side of the front part, comprise two cylindrical openings, where two connection rods are fitted and the folding handle proposed by the invention will be screwed. Said folding handle consists of a cylindrical tube pre-formed in a U shape, which is equipped with two holding stops on each side of the U, preferably made of a strong elastic material (silicone, rubber or a similar material) to affixed it to the sides of the mouth of the bowl of the invention, when the handle is in the raised position.
  • Other optional complementary elements, which the invention proposes to facilitate the hold, support, and agility of the user, consist of a complementary fixed grab bar model, anchored to the wall/s of the compartment, which consists of a cylindrical tube, preferably made of metal, screwed to the wall through the hole/s that comprise the welded plates, located at both ends of said cylindrical tube.
  • In the first place, the invention proposes the installation of said complementary fixed grab bar, in the vertical position, with respect to the floor, on the side wall/s of the compartment, with respect to the toilet bowl with foot support for multi-purpose use, when the compartment allows it, as it usually happens in the case in the water closets of toilets in public restrooms. Secondly, in the cases in which the compartment in which the invention is installed has, for example, the side walls very far apart, the invention proposes affixing the complementary fixed grab bar in the horizontal position with respect to the floor, on the wall where the rear of the toilet is located, to be able to use the invention as a squat toilet in the inverted position, as a bidet is normally used, in other words, facing the wall and holding onto the aforementioned complementary fixed grab bar, performing the same function as the other grab bars and handle described above.
  • As a complement to the description provided below, and for the purpose of helping to make the characteristics of the invention more readily understandable, this specification is accompanied by a set of drawings which, by way of illustration and not limitation, represent the most characteristic details of the invention.

  • In light of the aforementioned figures, and according to the adopted numbering, we can observe how the first practical embodiment of the toilet bowl with foot support for multipurpose use (see FIGS. 1-4, 9-14, and 29-37), is essentially based on a toilet bowl (1), with two lateral foot supports (3), which make up the same single body, fabricated with the same mold and material (porcelain, resin, stainless steel, etc.).
  • Said foot supports (3) are positioned approximately 10 centimeters from the mouth of the toilet bowl (1), which allows use in the squatting positions, as shown in FIGS. 30 to 37, either resting the buttocks on the mouth of the bowl, FIGS. 31, 33, 35 and 37; or without resting the buttocks on the mouth of the bowl, FIGS. 30, 32, 34 and 36. Said foot supports (3) preferably have a ridge (5) that increases the support of the foot and the stability of the user.
  • The toilet bowl (1) of the first model has two cylindrical openings (4) on both sides of the front part, to connect a folding handle (7), to facilitate the use of the invention (See FIGS. 1-4). More specifically, said folding handle (7) has two connection rods (8) to be inserted into said cylindrical openings (4) of the toilet bowl (1), so that the cylindrical tube pre-formed into a U shape (9) is assembled to said connection rods (8) with a screw (10) and is affixed to the toilet bowl with foot support for multipurpose use of the first model (1), (see FIGS. 9-14). In addition, the folding handle (7) preferably has two holding stops (11) at each one of the ends of the cylindrical tube pre-formed in a U shape (9), made of a strong, elastic material (such as rubber, neoprene, silicone, etc.) to serve as an end stop with the edge of the mouth of the toilet bowl (1) and to secure the elevated position of the folding handle (7) when it is used. Such that, when said folding handle (7) is lifted towards the toilet bowl with foot support for multipurpose use of the first model (1), for use, (see FIGS. 13 and 14), said holding stops (11) press the folding handle (7) with said toilet bowl (1), such that the folding handle (7) is supported for use, as shown in FIGS. 34 and 35.
  • According to the second practical embodiment that the invention proposes, FIGS. 5-8, 15-21 and 38-46, it is essentially based on a modified toilet bowl (2), in which two series of openings (6) have been made, on each side of said modified toilet bowl (2), as shown in FIGS. 5-8, to insert in each one of said openings (6) with a semi-cylindrical and rectangular parallelepiped shape, the solid pre-formed bars (13) with the same geometric shape, and which, together, will make up the two foot support platforms (12) of said second model of the invention. Such that in this second preferred embodiment of the invention, each one of the foot supports (3) of the first invention (1) is replaced by a set of solid pre-formed bars (13) with a semi-cylindrical and rectangular parallelepiped shape, of different sizes (letters from “a” to “i”), which, after being inserted, depending on their position with respect to the geometry of the mouth of the modified toilet bowl (2), into the openings (6) with semi-cylindrical and rectangular parallelepiped shape, when each one of the solid pre-formed bars (13) is inserted by the inserted end (14) into the corresponding opening (6) with the same geometric shape, they form the foot support platforms (12), as shown in FIGS. 15-23.
  • Said solid pre-formed bars (13) are preferably coated on the top external plane of the parallelepiped, for the foot support platform, with a non-slip material (15).
  • Such that both sets of pre-formed bars (13), each of which makes up one of the two foot support platforms (12), are positioned, as with the first model of the invention (1) and its two foot supports (3), approximately 10 centimeters from mouth of the modified toilet bowl (2), allowing use in the squatting position, as shown in FIGS. 39-46. Said modified toilet bowl (2) also has two cylindrical openings (4) on both sides of its front part, for the incorporation of the folding handle (7), which functions in the identical manner to the first model (1) of the preferred embodiment described above, as shown by its position of use in FIGS. 43 and 44.
  • In addition, in both models of the toilet bowl with support for the feet for multipurpose use (1) and (2), for more practical, safe, and effective use, one or more complementary wall handles (16) may be incorporated. Said handle is preferably made up of a cylindrical tube (17), preferably made of metal, to facilitate disinfection, which is anchored to the wall/s of the compartment through the hole/s (19) that comprise the plates (18) welded to said cylindrical tube (17) at each one of its ends (see FIGS. 26-28). Such that, there are multiple combinations offered by said complementary fixed grab bar (16), depending on the number of handles and the compartment in which the invention is installed. In one practical exemplary embodiment of the invention, the complementary fixed grab bar (16) is installed on the rear wall, with respect to the invention, positioned with a horizontal orientation, to provide greater stability to the user in the inverted squat toilet position, as shown in the embodiments presented in FIGS. 32-33 and 41-42, of both models (1) and (2), respectively. Likewise, said complementary fixed grab bar may be installed on the side wall/s of the compartment, with respect to the invention, preferably in the vertical position, fulfilling the same objectives of stability as those described earlier, as shown in the exemplary embodiments presented in FIGS. 36-37 and 45-46, of both models (1) and (2), respectively.
