corporation of Ohio Application November 22, 1934, Serial No. 754,236
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to a crayon box or package, and has for an object to provide a box vfor containing a number oi crayons of different colors and which may be inspected Without opening the box for ascertaining the various colors of the crayons of the package.
Another object of the invention is to provide a crayon box which may be of conventional or other type with the improved and peculiarly disposed sight openings through which may be observed independently the colors of the various crayons, the sight openings being symmetrically disposed through the wall of the box and in such relation to one another as to expose but one crayon through one opening or aperture.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a crayon box with sight apertures so arranged and proportioned as not only to admit of the inspection of the colors of the crayons within the box or package when closed, but to also support the crayons from the box when it is desired to remove the crayons for display, the sight openings or apertures being so disposed in the box as to accomplish this two-fold result and to properly and symmetrically support or display the crayons with their ends projecting through the openings in the box when set up for display.
The invention also aims to provide a box structure having combined display openings and crayon sockets in the wall of the box which are re1- atively arranged so as not to unduly weaken the wall or impair the strength of the box or package and also to increase rather than detract from the appearance of the box.
With the foregoing and other objects in view,
the invention will be more fully described hereinafter, and will be more particularly pointed out in the claim appended hereto.
In the drawing, wherein like symbols refer to like or corresponding parts throughout the several views:-
Figure l is a top plan view of a. crayon box or package constructed according to the present invention and with the crayons in the box with one crayon exposed through each of the sight openings.
Figure 2 is a top plan vieW of the box having the crayons removed therefrom and set up in the openings as sockets for supporting the crayons on display.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section taken through the crayon box With the crayons therein, substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section taken through the box on the line 4 4 of Figure 2, showing the arrangement of the crayons in the openings for supporting the crayon-s in upright position.
Referring to the drawing the box or container has a body portion comprising top and bottom Walls I0 and II and an end Wall I2 which is rela- '5 tively narrow so as to provide a box body Which is relatively -liat and wide. The edges of the box are closed by edge Walls I3 and the mouth or open end of the box is preferably closed by a foldable tongue I4 adapted to be inserted through l0 an opening I5 in the bottom Wall II of the box and with the marginal edge portion of the tongue lapped behind the marginal edge of the opening I5 in the bottom wall II) asshown in Figure 3.
The at Wide body portion is proportioned to 15 rreceive therein a row of crayons i6 which are of different colors, and the crayons are preferably disposed in parallel relation and with their blunt ends seated against the end wall l2 so that the crayons may be readily withdrawn through the 20 open end of the box when the tongue or flap ifi is swung into open position.
In purchasing and handling crayons it is essential to determine the various colors thereof, particularly when it is desired to Withdraw a 25 crayon of a predetermined color from the box without removing all of the crayons therefrom. With this purpose in View the top wall lil is provided With a plurality of sight openings ll.
In the particular embodiment of the invention 30 herein shown, there is a sight opening Il for each crayon I6 in the box, with the exception of the opposite end crayons of the row, and these opposite end crayons may be of certain colors found in most crayon assemblies such as brown and black, V35 `or other desired colors which may be otherwise indicated on the exterior of the box, if desired. Any suitable number and arrangement of` the sight openings II and the crayons may be resorted to Within the limits of the invention so as to ex- 40 pose more or less of the crayons as the size and character of the package may require. These sight openings Il may be arranged as desired in a circular row, and may be disposed in a denite relation with respect to the row of crayons 45 I6 and also with reference to the top Wall l0 of the box so that the sight openings are spaced apart a suitable distance to provide sufficient material of the box body to prevent un-due weakening of the top Wall ID. It is also essential to 50 symmetrically dispose the openings il so that the crayons may be readily inspected by a glance at the top of the box to determine the colors oi' the crayons I6 without repetition of the same color appearing through the sight openings Il. 55
For this reason the sight openings I'I are preferably arranged in a circular row and so spaced apart as to be disposed alternately or in staggered relation from edge to edge of the box with the openings oiset lengthwise of the box so that there is a single sight opening I1 in register with but one portion of one crayon I6.
While the sight openings I'I may be of any desired size and shape, they may be as shown in the present instance circular in form toconform to the cylindrical shape of the crayons and may also be of suitable diameter for snugly receiving the ends of the crayons therein so that the sight openings I'I may form sockets for receiving the crayons I6, as shown in Figures Zand 4, to hold the crayons in substantially upright position from the box when it is desired to display the crayons. In
` this instance the box body is used as a base or support adapted to lie flat upon a counter, a shelf or the like and the crayons may be inserted at their blunt ends in the openings I'I with the blunt ends projecting into the box body an-d resting upon the inner side of the opposite wall II, as shown in Figure 4.
In order that the purchaser may determine the desired colors of the crayons, it is only necessary to inspect the sight openings I'I which show the different colors therethrough.
A very great advantage derived by the circular disposition of the cut-out holes or openings in the box is that the box may be used as a palette and the crayons may be inserted in the holes and maintained within easy access, and may be relatively disposed as to their colors lto promote orderly color thinking and procedure.
After purchase, when it is desired to use a crayon of a particular color its location in the row may be quickly and easily determined by inspection of the crayons through the sight openings I'I, when the selected crayon may be Withdrawn through the top of the box. The package also provides a neat and attractive appearance when set up for display purposes as the crayons may be tilted outwardly with respect to the center of the circular row of openings, as shown in Figures 5 2 and 4, so as to show the different colors and other characteristics of the crayons throughout substantially their entire lengths.
It is obvious that various changes and modications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modications being restricted only by the scope of the following claimz- What is claimed is:-
A crayon package comprising a box body hav-- ing opposed flat walls, a row of crayons disposed in the box body with the crayons extending lengthwise thereof and the row of crayons extending from edge to edge in the box body, said box body having in one iiat wall a plurality of symmetrically disposed combined sight and crayon supporting openings disposed in longitudinally and laterally off-set relation relative to the box body and with one opening in register each with one crayon, said openings conforming substantially to the size and configuration of the blunt ends of the crayons whereby the blunt ends of the crayons may be inserted in the openings to sup- 30 port the crayons in upstandng position, and said openings being arranged in said at wall in a circle, said box body adapted to be placed flat against a support with the Wall having the openings therein disposed uppermost for supporting the crayons in upwardly extending positions and with the blunt ends thereof resting against the inner face of the opposite flat wall of the box body.
