Description

Filed Feb. 19, 1934 Patented Nov. 5, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates to portable wash bowls or basins, and more particularly to those adapted for use with conventional wash or laundry tubs, whereby said tubs may function not only for 5 washing soiled clothing or the like, but also may be transformed into a wash bowl or basin.
In the devices heretofore proposed fora similar purpose to my invention, it is either necessary to alter the conventional structure of the wash tub,
or the wash basins or bowls to be used in connection therewith are of a complicated structure, easy to get out of order, and expensive to manufacture. By the use of my invention all these deleterious results are effectively overcome.
1; It accordingly is an object of my invention to provide a novel form of portable wash basin or bowl, preferably for use in connection with a conventional wash tub, but may also be used with bath tubs and other supports, where such a basin 20 or bowl may be conveniently used, said basin or bowl preferably comprising a rectangular body portion or member, having depending therefrom a suitable bowl provided with drain and overflow means, and suitable end supports, which may be extensible so as to accommodate supports of varying sizes, such as said bath tubs and the like, a suitable soap dish, if desired, being also associated with said body portion in any preferred way.
3 The above, and further objects and advantages of my invention, as will be hereinafter set forth, I attain by the construction described in the specification and illustrated on the drawing forming a part of my application.
5 Reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which similar reference characters denote similar parts. In the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a part sectional and part end elevational view of a wash or laundry tub equipped 40 with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view, taken on the line 2-2, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, the dotted lines indicating how the device may be extended to provide supporting means 5 therefor,
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of Fig. 1, showing the end supports extended from the device,
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the device removed from the wash tub, and
50 Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view, taken on the line 55, Fig. 2.
Describing my invention more in detail, the main object of said invention is to transform or convert the conventional wash or laundry tub 2,
55 provided with drain means 4, and faucets 6, and a covering or top, designated generally by the reference numeral 8, which may be easily and quickly removed from said tub, so that said tub may function for the additional purpose of a wash basin 60 or bowl.
It will, of course, be understood, that I do not desire to limit the use of my invention to laundry or wash tubs alone, but same may be equally useful in connection with other supports, such, for example, as bath tubs and the like. 5
The top orcovering 8 is preferably of rectangular construction, although other configuration may be had, said top or covering comprising a body portion or member ID from which depends a wash bowl or basin i2, which is preferably inte- 10 gral with said body portion, and both of which may be stamped or otherwise formed from sheet material, or other material or ways in practice preferred. If desired, also, the device may be enameled for enhancing its appearance.
The bowl l2 may be provided with a suitable drain means l4, and also an overflow means l6 of any preferred kind.
To accommodate wash or laundry tubs of varying dimensions encountered in practice, or other supports, such as bath tubs and the like, I preferably provide the body portion H) with end supporting means ll, which means may have bentover end manipulating means l8, whereby the end supports I! may be extended from the body 5 portion H1, or may be collapsed with respect thereto.
To this end, the body portion I0 is provided with crimps 20, to accommodate the side edges of end extensions to provide run ways 22 in which said edges of said end extensions or supports extend so that said supports may be pulled out to support the ends upon the top of the tub 2.
If desired, also, a suitable soap holding 'means 24 (Figs. 3 and l) equipped with drain means 26, 5 may be provided on the body portion In, and may be either stamped out with said body portion and. hence integral therewith, or may be associated with said body portion in any manner in practice preferred.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principle of operation of my invention together with the device which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it un- 5 derstood that the device shown is only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other means.
I claim .as my invention:
In a device of the class described, a rectangu- 5 lar portion, and a depending bowl integral with said portion and both stamped from sheet material, end supports, also stamped from sheet material, and the sides .of said rectangular portion being crimped about said supports, whereby said supports may be extended from said rectangular portion.
WILLIAM J. ALLEY.
