RICHARD J. MACDONALD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-LININGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,929, dated April 2, 1878 application filed February 13, 1878.
cheap and elastic carpet-lining, that provides, in a simple manner, a yielding support to the carpet, and pockets for the collection of dust; and the invention consists of a carpet-lining made of a continuous sheet of suitable paper, which is out in such a manner that small portions of the sheet may be bent or lapped to the under side, and form thereby spring-supports for the carpet.
By reference to the drawings, A represents a continuous sheet, made of paper-stock, or
other suitable material having suflicient body and strength for this purpose. The sheet A is made of suitable thickness, and provided with a number of angular or curved slits or openings, a, so that the angular pieces 12 cut out thereby may be bent or lapped to the under side of the sheet, forming thereby yielding supports, that give by the pressure of the Weight of the body, but that rise instantly as soon as the pressure is removed.
The lapping pieces sustain the sheet and carpet at a small distance from the floor, and impart a spring action to the same. The openings a form narrow spaces, that act as receptacles for the collection of the dust settling down through the openings left by the bentdown portions.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A carpet-lining made of a continuous sheet, with openings and downwardly-bent or lapped portions, substantially as specified.
RICHARD J. MACDONALD.
