The cover includes a housing that is configured to receive the ammunition magazine therein and at least one protrusion that extends about an interior surface of the housing to aid in releasably securing the ammunition magazine within the housing.

Description

    FIELD OF THE INVENTION
  • The present disclosure relates generally to a protective cover and more specifically to a protective cover that substantially extends over and is releasably secured to an ammunition magazine to prevent introduction of debris and other foreign objects into the magazine and to protect the topmost bullet arranged in the magazine.
  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • An ammunition magazine is a removable device that holds bullets and feeds them into a firearm as the preceding round is fired and ejected from the firearm. In general, ammunition magazines stack bullets from top to bottom. At the bottom of the magazine is a spring which is compressed when the magazine is loaded and exerts upward pressure on the bullets which enables the bullets to be mechanically presented and fed into the firearm.
  • The mechanical nature of ammunition magazines makes them prone to failure from foreign objects and debris that can get in through various openings in the magazine. For example, storing a loaded (or unloaded) magazine in a pocket, a bag or other storage container may introduce sand, dust, lint or other debris into the magazine that can interfere with its ability to function.
  • Additionally, the topmost bullet in an ammunition magazine sits proud of the top of the magazine, making the bullet vulnerable to impacts (e.g., when dropped). Because bullets are live ammunition, there is a risk that such an impact could cause a premature discharge of the top round.
  • Although various forms of covering elements exist for ammunition magazines, no covering element fully prevents debris or other foreign objects from entering an ammunition magazine or contacting bullets housed therein and protects bullets from impact and/or damage.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • The present disclosure is directed to a protective cover that is designed to prevent the introduction of debris and other foreign objects into an ammunition magazine and to protect the topmost bullet in a magazine from potential impacts and/or damage thereto.
  • In an embodiment, the disclosure is directed to a protective cover that is configured to slide over and substantially encompass an ammunition magazine. The cover comprises a housing that has opening therein configured to receive the ammunition magazine, an exterior surface, an interior surface and at least one protrusion that extends about the interior surface of the housing that is configured to aid in releasably securing the ammunition magazine within the housing.
  • The housing of the protective cover can include a first sidewall, a second sidewall that is spaced from the first sidewall and that extends substantially parallel to the first sidewall, a third sidewall that extends between a first end of the first sidewall and a first end of the second sidewall, a fourth sidewall that extends between a second end of the first sidewall and a second end of the second sidewall and a fifth sidewall that encompasses a first end of the housing. The housing can include a base at the opening that is delimited by at least portions of the first sidewall, the second sidewall, the third sidewall and the fourth sidewall.
  • In an embodiment, the at least one first protrusion can extend longitudinally along an inner surface of the first sidewall from a first end to at least a midpoint thereof. The at least one protrusion can be a rail that extends longitudinally along the interior surface of the housing. The rail can taper about one degree from a distal end toward a proximal end thereof.
  • In an embodiment, the at least one protrusion can include a first rail and a second rail that is spaced from the first rail and can extend substantially parallel to each other and longitudinally along an inner surface of the first sidewall from a first end to at least a midpoint thereof. The first rail can extend from an interior surface of the first sidewall within the housing and the second rail can extend from an interior surface of one of the second sidewall, the third sidewall and the fourth sidewall within the housing. The first rail and the second rail can each taper about one degree from a distal end toward a proximal end thereof.
  • In an embodiment, the at least one protrusion includes a first pair of rails that extend substantially parallel to each other and a second pair of rails that extend substantially parallel to each other with the first pair of rails and the second pair of rails spaced from each other. The first pair of rails and the second pair of rails can each tapers about one degree from a distal end toward a proximal end thereof.
  • In an embodiment, the first pair of rails can extend from an interior surface of the first sidewall within the housing and the second pair of rails can extend from an interior surface of one of the second sidewall, the third sidewall and the fourth sidewall within the housing. The first pair of rails can be spaced a first distance from each other and the second pair of rails can be spaced a second distance that is greater than the first distance from each other.
  • In an embodiment, the first pair of rails can extend along an inner surface of the second sidewall of the housing and the second pair of rails can be spaced from each other and extend along an inner surface of the fourth sidewall of the housing. The first pair of rails can be spaced a first distance from each other and the second pair of rails can be spaced a second distance that is substantially the same as the first distance from each other.
  • The first rail can extend from an inner surface of the first sidewall within the housing and the second rail extends from an inner surface of the second sidewall within the housing such that the first rail and the second rail extend toward each other.
  • In an embodiment, the housing can be comprised of a polymeric material such as polyethylene.
  • In an embodiment, the housing can includes a plurality of ribs that extend along an exterior surface thereof to aid in installation of the housing over the ammunition cover and removal of the cover from the ammunition magazine. The plurality of ribs can include a first plurality of ribs and a second plurality of ribs that are spaced from the first plurality of ribs with each of the first and second plurality of ribs extending along an exterior surface of the housing to aid in installation of the housing over the ammunition cover and removal of the cover from the ammunition cover.
  • In an embodiment, the housing can include at least one groove to aid in removal of the cover from the ammunition magazine. The groove can, for example, be located at the opening of the housing.
  • In an embodiment, the disclosure is directed to a protective cover that is configured to substantially slide over an ammunition magazine with the cover comprising a housing that includes a first sidewall, a second sidewall that is spaced from the first sidewall and that extends substantially parallel to the first sidewall, a third sidewall that extends between a first end of the first sidewall and a first end of the second sidewall, a fourth sidewall that extends between a second end of the first sidewall and a second end of the second sidewall and a fifth sidewall that encompasses a first end of the housing and at least one rib that extends longitudinally along an inner surface of the housing.
  • At least one rib can extend from an inner surface of the first sidewall of the housing and at least one rib can extend from an inner surface of the second sidewall of the housing. Alternatively, at least one rib can extend from an inner surface of the second sidewall of the housing and at least one rib can extend from an inner surface of the fourth sidewall of the housing.
  • In an embodiment, the at least one rib can include a first pair of ribs and a second pair of ribs. The first pair of ribs can be spaced from each other and extend along an inner surface of the first sidewall of the housing and the second pair of ribs can be spaced from each other and extend along an inner surface of the second sidewall of the housing. The first pair of ribs can be spaced a first distance from each other and the second pair of ribs can be spaced a second distance, that is greater than the first distance, from each other.
  • In an embodiment, the at least one rib can include a first pair of ribs and a second pair of ribs with the first pair of ribs spaced from each other and extending along an inner surface of the second sidewall of the housing and the second pair of ribs that are spaced from each other and extend along an inner surface of the fourth sidewall of the housing. The first pair of ribs can be spaced a first distance from each other and the second pair of ribs can be spaced a second distance that is substantially the same as the first distance from each other.
  • In an embodiment, the disclosure is directed to a protective cover that is configured to substantially slide over an ammunition magazine that includes a first detent and a second detent. The cover comprises a housing has an opening therein configured to receive the ammunition magazine and includes a first sidewall, a second sidewall that is spaced from the first sidewall and that extends substantially parallel to the first sidewall, a third sidewall that extends between a first end of the first sidewall and a first end of the second sidewall, a fourth sidewall that extends between a second end of the first sidewall and a second end of the second sidewall and a fifth sidewall that encompasses a first end of the housing. A first protrusion extends from a first surface of the first sidewall and is configured, when the ammunition magazine is arranged within the housing, to extend into the first detent of the ammunition magazine and a second protrusion that extends from a first surface of the second sidewall and is configured, when the ammunition magazine is arranged within the housing, to extend into the second detent of the ammunition magazine.

  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION
  • With reference now to the drawings, and in particular to FIGS. 1 through 25, embodiments of a protective cover 10, 100, 200 will be described.
  • FIGS. 1-10 are directed to a first embodiment of a protective cover 10 that is configured to slide over the top of an ammunition magazine 12 (see FIG. 11), which includes bullets 14 housed therein, and substantially encompass the magazine 12. The cover 10, as shown in FIGS. 1-5, includes a housing 16 that has a first sidewall 18, a second sidewall 20 that is spaced from the first sidewall 18 and extends substantially parallel to the first sidewall 18, a third sidewall 22 that extends between a first end of the first sidewall 18 and a first end of the second sidewall 20, a fourth sidewall 24 that extends between a second end of the first sidewall 18 and a second end of the second sidewall 20 and a fifth sidewall 26 encompassing a first end of the housing 16.
  • As shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, for example, the cover 10 can include a plurality of ribs 28 that extend from the first sidewall 18 and a plurality of ribs 30 that extend from the second sidewall 20 to aid in gripping the cover when sliding the cover over the ammunition magazine 14 or removing the cover from the ammunition magazine 14. Although the ribs 28, 30 are shown in extending from the first sidewall 18 and the second sidewall 20, respectively, ribs can extend from just the first sidewall 18 or the second sidewall 20 or they can alternatively extend in addition to the first sidewall 18 and/or second sidewall 20, the third sidewall 22 and/or the fourth sidewall 24.
  • The cover 10 can also include at least one groove 32 (see FIGS. 1, 4 and 5), which allows an individual to use two fingers of one hand to grab the ammunition magazine 14 while the individual's opposing hand grasps the housing 12 to aid in the removal of the cover 10 from the ammunition magazine 14. Although the groove 32 is depicted as a semi-circular shape, the groove 32 can take the form of any known shape that would aid in the removal of the cover 10 from the ammunition magazine 14.
  • FIG. 6 is a cross-sectional view of the housing 12 taken from FIG. 2 that shows a plurality of protrusions, or rails, 34, 35 36, 37 extending inwardly from the first sidewall 18 and the second sidewall 20, respectively. FIG. 7 is a detail view of a protrusion 34 of FIG. 6.
  • As shown in FIG. 8, a first pair of rails 34, 35 extend from the first sidewall 18 of the housing 12. The rails 34, 35 extend along an inner surface 36 of the first sidewall 18 from a first end of the first sidewall 18 to at least a midpoint thereof, toward a second end of the first sidewall 18. The rails 34, 35 are spaced a first distance from each other and extend substantially parallel to each other along the inner surface 36.
  • FIG. 9 is another cross-sectional view of the cover 10 showing a second pair of the rails 36, 37 that extend from the second sidewall 20 of the housing 12. The rails 36, 37 extend along an inner surface 38 of the second sidewall 20 from a first end of the second sidewall 20 to at least a midpoint thereof, toward a second end of the second sidewall 20. The rails 36, 37 are spaced a second distance from each other, which is greater than the first distance the rails 34, 35 that extend from the inner surface 36 of the first sidewall 18 are spaced, and extend substantially parallel to each other along the inner surface 38 of the second sidewall 20.
  • In an embodiment, the rails 34, 35, 36, 37 are tapered at both the proximal end and distal end thereof. In an embodiment, as is depicted in FIG. 10, the rails 34, 35 extend at an angle of about one degree from a distal end toward a proximal end thereof.
  • FIG. 11 is a perspective view of an ammunition magazine 12 with a plurality of bullets 14 arranged therein. The magazine 12 includes a first detent 13 and a second detent 15.
  • FIG. 12 is an assembly view of the ammunition magazine 14 being arranged within the cover 10. The cover 10 is slide over the magazine 14 until the base of the cover 10 contacts the base of the magazine 14, releasably fixing the cover 10 to the magazine 14. As shown in an assembled state in FIG. 13, the cover 10 substantially encapsulates the ammunition magazine 14 to prevent the ingress of debris and/or to prevent damage to the topmost bullet 16 in a loaded magazine 14.
  • FIG. 14 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of a protective cover 100 that is configured to slide over the top of an ammunition magazine 12 and substantially encompasses the magazine 12 to prevent in ingress of debris or other contaminants and to protect the topmost bullet 14 stored in the magazine 12. The cover 100, as shown in FIGS. 14-16, includes a housing 106 that has a first sidewall 118, a second sidewall 120 that is spaced from the first sidewall 118 and extends substantially parallel to the first sidewall 118, a third sidewall 122 that extends between a first end of the first sidewall 118 and a first end of the second sidewall 120, a fourth sidewall 124 that extends between a second end of the first sidewall 118 and a second end of the second sidewall 120 and a fifth sidewall 126 encompassing a first end of the housing 116.
  • As shown in FIGS. 14-19, for example, the cover 100 can include a plurality of ribs 128 that extend from the first sidewall 118 and a plurality of ribs 130 that extend from the second sidewall 120 to aid in gripping the cover 100 when sliding the cover 100 over the ammunition magazine 14 or removing the cover 100 from the ammunition magazine 14. Although the ribs 128, 130 are shown in extending from the first sidewall 118 and the third sidewall 120, respectively, ribs can extend from just the first sidewall 118 or the second sidewall 120 or they can alternatively extend in addition to the first sidewall 118 and/or the second sidewall 120, the third sidewall 122 and/or the fourth sidewall 124.
  • Similar to the groove 32 of the cover 10, the cover 100 can include a groove 132 to aid in the removal of the cover 100 from the ammunition magazine 14 (see FIGS. 14, 15, 18, 19). The cover 100 can include more than one groove 132. Although the groove 132 is depicted as a semi-circular shape, the groove 132 can take the form of any known shape that would aid in the removal of the cover 100 from the ammunition magazine 14.
  • FIG. 17 is a cross-sectional view of the housing 106 taken from FIG. 15 that shows a plurality of protrusions, or rails, 134, 135, 136, 137 that extend inwardly from an inner surface 140 of the third sidewall 122 and the fourth sidewall 124, respectively. As shown, the rails 134, 135, 136, 137 are equally spaced apart from each other and extend substantially parallel to each other.
  • FIG. 18 is a cross-sectional view of the cover 100 showing a first pair of rails 134, 135 that extend from the third sidewall 122 of the housing 102. The rails 134, 135 extend from an inner surface 127 of the fifth sidewall 126 along an inner surface 140 of the third sidewall 122 from a first end of the third sidewall 122 toward a second end thereof. The rails 134, 135 are spaced a first distance from each other and extend substantially parallel to each other along the inner surface 140.
  • FIG. 19 is another cross-sectional view of the cover 100 showing a second pair of the rails 136, 137 extending from the fourth sidewall 124 of the housing 102. The rails 136, 137 extend from the inner surface 127 of the fifth sidewall 126 along an inner surface 142 of the fourth sidewall 124 from a first end of the fourth sidewall 124 toward a second end thereof. The rails 136, 137 are spaced substantially a same distance from each other as the rails 134 that extend from the inner surface 140 of the third sidewall 122, and extend substantially parallel to each other along the inner surface 142.
  • In an embodiment, the rails 134, 135, 136, 137 are tapered at both the proximal end and distal end thereof. In an embodiment, the rails 134, 135, 136, 137 extend at an angle of about one degree from a distal end toward a proximal end thereof.
  • FIG. 20 is an assembly view of the ammunition magazine 14 being arranged within the cover 100. The cover 100 is slide over the magazine 14 until the base of the cover 100 contacts the base of the magazine 14, releasably fixing the cover 100 to the magazine 14. As shown in an assembled state in FIG. 21, the cover 100 substantially encapsulates the ammunition magazine 14 to prevent the ingress of debris and/or to prevent damage to the topmost bullet 16 in a loaded magazine 14.
  • FIGS. 22-25 illustrate a third embodiment of a cover 200. FIGS. 22 and 23 are perspective views showing different angles of a cutaway of the cover 200. FIG. 23 is a cross-section of FIG. 21 and FIG. 24 is a cross-section of FIG. 23.
  • As shown in an embodiment in FIGS. 22, 23 and 24, the cover 200 can include a first protrusion 201 and a second protrusion 203 that is spaced from and opposed to the first protrusion. The first protrusion 201 can be arrange within the first detent 13 of the ammunition magazine 12 and the second protrusion 203 can be arrange within the second detent 15 of the ammunition magazine 12 to secure the cover 200 to on the magazine 200.
  • To aid in gripping the cover 200 when sliding the cover 200 over the ammunition magazine 14 or removing the cover 200 from the ammunition magazine 14, the cover 200 can include a plurality of ribs 228 that extend from the first sidewall 218 and a plurality of ribs 230 that extend from the second sidewall 220. Although the ribs 228, 230 are shown in extending from the first sidewall 218 and the second sidewall 220, respectively, ribs can extend from just the first sidewall 218 or the second sidewall 220 or they can alternatively extend in addition to the third sidewall 222 and/or the fourth sidewall 224, the first sidewall 218 and/or the second sidewall 220.
  • In an embodiment, the cover 10, 100, 200 can be comprised of a polymeric material such as polyethylene.
  • Although this invention has been disclosed in the context of certain embodiments and examples, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that the invention extends beyond the specifically disclosed embodiments to other alternative embodiments and/or uses of the invention and obvious modifications and equivalents thereof. It is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and not of limitation. In addition, while several variations of the embodiments of the invention have been shown and described in detail, other modifications, which are within the scope of this invention, including, but not limited to, the substitutions of equivalent features, materials, or parts, will be readily apparent to those of skill in the art based upon this disclosure without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

Claims (34)

1. An ammunition magazine protective cover, comprising:
a magazine holder having an opening therein configured to receive an ammunition magazine such that the ammunition magazine is substantially encompassed by the magazine holder when the ammunition magazine is arranged therein and including a first sidewall, a second sidewall that is spaced from the first sidewall and that extends substantially parallel to the first sidewall, a third sidewall that extends between a first end of the first sidewall and a first end of the second sidewall, a fourth sidewall that extends between a second end of the first sidewall and a second end of the second sidewall and a fifth sidewall encompassing a first end of the housing; and
at least one rail extending longitudinally about an interior surface of one of the first sidewall, the second sidewall, the third sidewall and the fourth sidewall from a first longitudinal end to at least a midpoint thereof and being tapered from a distal end toward a proximal end thereof to aid in releasably securing the ammunition magazine within the housing magazine holder.

4. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 1, wherein the at least one rail includes a first rail and a second rail that is spaced from the first rail.
5. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 4, wherein the first rail and the second rail extend substantially parallel to each other.
6. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 4, wherein the first rail and the second rail extend longitudinally along the interior surface of one of the first sidewall, the second sidewall, the third sidewall and the fourth sidewall of the magazine holder.
7. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 1, wherein the at least one rail includes a first rail and a second rail that is spaced from the first rail, the first rail extending from the interior surface of the first sidewall within the housing and the second rail extending from the interior surface of one of the second sidewall, the third sidewall and the fourth sidewall within the magazine holder.
8. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 1, wherein the at least one rail includes a first pair of rails that extend substantially parallel to each other and a second pair of rails that extend substantially parallel to each other, the first pair of rails and the second pair of rails being spaced from each other.
9. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 1, wherein the at least one rail includes a first pair of rails that extend substantially parallel to each other and a second pair of rails that extend substantially parallel to each other, the first pair of rails and the second pair of rails being spaced from each other, the first pair of rails extends from the interior surface of the first sidewall within the magazine holder and the second pair of rails extends from the interior surface of one of the second sidewall, the third sidewall and the fourth sidewall within the magazine holder.
10. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 9, wherein the first pair of rails are spaced a first distance from each other and the second pair of rails are spaced a second distance from each other that is greater than the first distance.
11. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 1, wherein the at least one rail includes a first pair of rails and a second pair of rails, the first pair of rails being spaced from each other and extending along the interior surface of the third sidewall of the magazine holder and the second pair of rails being spaced from each other and extending along the interior surface of the fourth sidewall of the magazine holder.
12. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 1, wherein the at least one rail includes a first pair of rails and a second pair of rails, the first pair of rails are spaced a first distance from each other and the second pair of rails are spaced a second distance from each other that is substantially the same as the first distance.
13. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 1, wherein the at least one rail includes a first pair of rails and a second rail, the first pair of rails extends from the interior surface of the first sidewall within the magazine holder and the second rail extends from the interior surface of the second sidewall within the magazine holder such that the first rail and the second rail extend toward each other.
14. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 1, wherein the at least one rail extends longitudinally along the interior surface of the first sidewall from a first end to at least a midpoint thereof.
15. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 1, wherein the at least one rail includes a first rail and a second rail that each extend longitudinally along the interior surface of the first sidewall from a first end to at least a midpoint thereof.
16. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 1, wherein the at least one rail tapers about one degree from a distal end toward a proximal end thereof.
17. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 5, wherein the first rail and the second rail each taper about one degree from the distal end toward the proximal end thereof.
18. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 9, wherein the first pair of rails and the second pair of rails each tapers about one degree from a distal end toward a proximal end thereof.
19. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 1, wherein the magazine holder is comprised of a polymeric material.
20. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 1, wherein the magazine holder is comprised of a polyethylene.
21. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 1, wherein the magazine holder includes a plurality of ribs extending along an exterior surface thereof to aid in installation of the magazine holder over the ammunition magazine and removal of the magazine holder from the ammunition magazine.
22. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 1, wherein the magazine holder includes a first plurality of ribs and a second plurality of ribs that are spaced from the first plurality of ribs extending along an exterior surface of the magazine holder to aid in installation of the magazine holder over the ammunition magazine and removal of the magazine holder from the ammunition cover.
23. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 1, wherein the magazine holder includes a base at the opening that is delimited by at least portions of the first sidewall, the second sidewall, the third sidewall and the fourth sidewall.
24. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 23, wherein the cover includes at least one groove extending from the base toward the fifth sidewall to aid in removal of the cover from the ammunition magazine.

26. An ammunition magazine protective cover configured to substantially slide over an ammunition magazine, the ammunition magazine protective cover comprising:
a magazine holder including a first sidewall, a second sidewall that is spaced from the first sidewall and that extends substantially parallel to the first sidewall, a third sidewall that extends between a first end of the first sidewall and a first end of the second sidewall, a fourth sidewall that extends between a second end of the first sidewall and a second end of the second sidewall and a fifth sidewall encompassing a first end of the magazine holder;
at least one rib extending longitudinally along an inner surface of only one of the first sidewall and the third sidewall and only one of the second sidewall and the fourth sidewall of the magazine holder, said at least one rib being tapered from a distal end toward a proximal end thereof.
27. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 26, wherein the at least one rib extends only from the inner surface of the first sidewall of the magazine holder and the inner surface of the second sidewall of the magazine holder.
28. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 26, wherein the at least one rib extends only from the inner surface of the third sidewall of the magazine holder and the inner surface of the fourth sidewall of the magazine holder.
29. The ammunition magazine protective cover of claim 26, wherein the at least one rib includes a first pair of ribs and a second pair of ribs, the first pair of ribs being spaced a first distance from each other and extending along the inner surface of one of the first sidewall and the third sidewall of the magazine holder and the second pair of ribs being spaced a second distance, which is greater than the first distance, from each other and extending along the inner surface of one of the second sidewall and the fourth sidewall of the magazine holder.

34. A kit, comprising:
an ammunition magazine; and
cover defined by a magazine holder having an opening therein configured to receive the ammunition magazine such that the ammunition magazine is substantially encompassed by the magazine holder when arranged therein and including a first sidewall, a second sidewall that is spaced from the first sidewall and that extends substantially parallel to the first sidewall, a third sidewall that extends between a first end of the first sidewall and a first end of the second sidewall, a fourth sidewall that extends between a second end of the first sidewall and a second end of the second sidewall and a fifth sidewall encompassing a first end of the magazine holder and at least one rail extending about an interior surface of one of the first sidewall, the second sidewall, the third sidewall and the fourth sidewall that is configured to releasably secure the ammunition magazine within the magazine holder and at least one rail extending longitudinally about an interior surface of one of the first sidewall, the second sidewall, the third sidewall and the fourth sidewall that is tapered from a distal end toward a proximal end thereof to releasably secure the ammunition magazine within the magazine holder.
