Abstract

A medical garment and components thereof are provided. The medical garment includes a top portion including a front portion, a back portion, a neck portion, and two sleeve portions, wherein the front portion is bifurcated from the neck portion to a bottom of the front portions, and wherein each of the two sleeve portions are bifurcated from the neck portion to a sleeve portion opening. The medical garment further includes a bottom portion including a waist portion, a left leg portion, and a right leg portion, wherein the left leg portion and the right leg portion are bifurcated from the waist portion to a groin portion of the lower portion, and wherein the left leg portion and the right leg portion are each bifurcated from the groin portion to a lower end of each of the left leg portion and right leg portion.

Description

    CLAIM OF PRIORITY
  • This application is a United States non-provisional application and claims no priority to any previous United States patent or patent application.
  • FIELD OF THE EMBODIMENTS
  • The field of embodiments of this invention relates to medical garments and, in particular, to medical garments including bifurcations at various locations of the garments and fasteners coupled to the bifurcated areas.
  • BACKGROUND OF THE EMBODIMENTS
  • Common hospital gowns expose large amounts of the body of the wearer and are not conducive to the mobility of the wearer. Such gowns do not provide easy mobility for activities such as walking and getting in and out of bed and also are not conducive to enabling medical care professionals to easily access the bodies of those wearing the gowns.
  • Therefore, for at least these reasons, a medical garment that can be worn by patients and which is conducive to easy of mobility, ease of putting the garment on and taking the garment off, and ease of access to the patients is needed.
  • Examples of related art are described below:
  • U.S. Pat. No. 1,462,515 generally describes hospital gowns which may be opened at various places.
  • U.S. Pat. No. 3,144,659 generally describes a hospital gown that reduced wrinkling and gathering, facilitates nursing needs, provides adequate coverage, and has a pleasing appearance.
  • U.S. Pat. No. 3,557,385 generally describes a hospital gown formed with wing-like portions which are very loosely arranged and draped about the arms of the patient allowing quick and easy access to the patient's chest and arms without exposing the patient or necessitating cutting and tearing of the gown.

The gown has a large upper opening extending across the front of the gown from about the area clavicle of the patient and an arcuate lower portion extending downwardly to about the descending aorta of the patient; a detachable panel for covering the large upper opening; a narrow opening extending across the front of the gown for uncovering portions of the patient's abdomen; a panel for covering the narrow opening; a storage pocket on a front portion of the large upper opening panel; a pair of divided lower side portions for uncovering portions of the patient's groin; and a plurality of fasteners for joining the panels to peripheries of the openings.
  • U.S. Patent Publication No. 20010044948 generally describes an improved garment for use by patients receiving treatment in a hospital. The disclosed gown provides the patient with greater comfort and reduced incidence of embarrassment by covering the patient's body still while allowing easy access thereto, to facilitate the administration of medical treatment. This device is particularly beneficial to modest patients who feel uncomfortable during hospital stays because of hospital gowns that do not adequately close and thereby expose various portions of the patient's body. In the preferred embodiment, the hospital gown of the present invention has an open front, a partially open back, and a plurality of hook and loop-type fastening strips to ensure adequate closure of the garment.
  • U.S. Patent Publication No. 201100242150 generally describes a hospital gown having strategically positioned slits and fitted fasteners along the front, back and sides to allow preferential closing of the open seams and securing sensor connected leads or intravenous tubing to the patient. The hospital gown has a rear-opened garment, fasteners for closing the shoulder and sleeves sections, rear fasteners, plurality of strategically positioned slits for passing tubes and wire and plurality of pockets. The hospital gown may comprise a side opened garment, shoulder fasteners, side fasteners, plurality of slits for passing tubes and wire and plurality of pockets. The preferred and alternative embodiments of the hospital gown feature one or more hook-and-loop strips or snaps strategically placed at the front, sides and, or back of the hospital gown.
  • U.S. Design Pat. No. D381,488 generally describes an ornamental design for a hospital gown.
  • U.S. Design Pat. No. D478,203 generally describes a gown for medical and hospital use.
  • Various systems and methodologies are known in the art. However, their structure and means of operation are substantially different from the present disclosure. The other inventions fail to solve all the problems taught by the present disclosure. At least one embodiment of this invention is presented in the drawings below and will be described in more detail herein.
  • SUMMARY OF THE EMBODIMENTS
  • According to an aspect of the present invention, a medical garment is provided. The medical garment includes a top portion, which includes a front portion, a back portion, a neck portion, and two sleeve portions, wherein the front portion is bifurcated from the neck portion to a bottom of the front portions, forming a first top bifurcation, and wherein each of the two sleeve portions are bifurcated from the neck portion to a sleeve portion opening, forming two second top bifurcations. The medical garment further includes a bottom portion, which includes a waist portion, a left leg portion, and a right leg portion, wherein the left leg portion and the right leg portion are bifurcated from the waist portion to a groin portion of the lower portion, forming a first bottom bifurcation, and wherein the left leg portion and the right leg portion are each bifurcated from the groin portion to a lower end of each of the left leg portion and right leg portion, forming two second bottom bifurcations.
  • According to another aspect of the present invention, a medical garment to be worn on an upper portion of a patient is presented, the medical garment including a front portion, a back portion, a neck portion, and two sleeve portions, wherein the front portion is bifurcated from the neck portion to a bottom of the front portions, forming a first bifurcation, and wherein each of the two sleeve portions are bifurcated from the neck portion to a sleeve portion opening, forming two second bifurcations.
  • According to yet another aspect of the present invention, a medical garment to be worn on a lower portion of a patient is presented, the medical garment including a waist portion, a left leg portion, and a right leg portion, wherein the left leg portion and the right leg portion are bifurcated from the waist portion to a groin portion of the lower portion, forming a first bifurcation, and wherein the left leg portion and the right leg portion are each bifurcated from the groin portion to a lower end of each of the left leg portion and right leg portion, forming two second bifurcations.
  • It is an object of the present invention to present the medical garment, wherein the medical garment further includes at least one fastener coupled to ends of the first top bifurcation, two second top bifurcations, first bottom bifurcation, and two second bottom bifurcations, wherein, for each bifurcation, the at least one fastener is configured to couple one end to a receiving end.
  • It is an object of the present invention to present the medical garment, wherein the at least one fastener is selected from the group consisting of hook and loop fasteners, buttons, snaps, zippers, lace and eyelet fasteners, and lace and hook fasteners.
  • It is an object of the present invention to present the medical garment, wherein the medical garment further includes one or more pocket portions coupled to the front portion of the top portion.
  • It is an object of the present invention to present the medical garment, wherein the medical garment further includes one or more pocket portions coupled to the bottom portion.
  • It is an object of the present invention to present the medical garment, wherein the top portion is further bifurcated below a breast portion of the front portion of the top portion, forming a third top bifurcation.
  • It is an object of the present invention to present the medical garment, wherein the third top bifurcation is approximately perpendicular to the first top bifurcation.
  • It is an object of the present invention to present the medical garment, wherein the medical garment further includes at least one fastener coupled to ends of the third top bifurcation, wherein the at least one fastener is configured to couple one end of the third top bifurcation to a receiving end of the third top bifurcation.
  • It is an object of the present invention to present the medical garment to be worn on an upper portion of a patient, wherein the medical garment further includes at least one fastener coupled to ends of the first bifurcation and two second bifurcations, wherein, for each bifurcation, the at least one fastener is configured to couple one end to a receiving end.
  • It is an object of the present invention to present the medical garment to be worn on an upper portion of a patient, wherein the at least one fastener is selected from the group consisting of hook and loop fasteners, buttons, snaps, zippers, lace and eyelet fasteners, and lace and hook fasteners.
  • It is an object of the present invention to present the medical garment to be worn on an upper portion of a patient, wherein the medical garment further includes one or more pocket portions coupled to the front portion.
  • It is an object of the present invention to present the medical garment to be worn on an upper portion of a patient, wherein the medical garment is further bifurcated below a breast portion of the front portion, forming a third bifurcation.
  • It is an object of the present invention to present the medical garment to be worn on an upper portion of a patient, wherein the third bifurcation is approximately perpendicular to the first bifurcation.
  • It is an object of the present invention to present the medical garment to be worn on an upper portion of a patient, wherein the medical garment further includes at least one fastener coupled to ends of the third bifurcation, wherein the at least one fastener is configured to couple one end of the third bifurcation to a receiving end of the third bifurcation.
  • It is an object of the present invention to present the medical garment to be worn on a lower portion of a patient, wherein the medical garment farther includes at least one fastener coupled to ends of the first bifurcation and two second bifurcations, wherein, for each bifurcation, the at least one fastener is configured to couple one end to a receiving end.
  • It is an object of the present invention to present the medical garment to be worn on a lower portion of a patient, wherein the at least one fastener is selected from the group consisting of hook and loop fasteners, buttons, snaps, zippers, lace and eyelet fasteners, and lace and hook fasteners.
  • It is an object of the present invention to present the medical garment to be worn on a lower portion of a patient, wherein the medical garment further includes one or more pocket portions.
  • It is an object of the present invention to present the medical garment to be worn on a lower portion of a patient, wherein the waist portion includes an elastic material.

  • DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
  • The preferred embodiments of the present invention will now be described with reference to the drawings. Identical elements in the various figures are identified with the same reference numerals.
  • Reference will now be made in detail to each embodiment of the present invention. Such embodiments are provided by way of explanation of the present invention, which is not intended to be limited thereto. In fact, those of ordinary skill in the art may appreciate upon reading the present specification and viewing the present drawings that various modifications and variations can be made thereto.
  • Referring now to FIG. 1, a front view of a top portion 100 of a medical garment in a closed position is illustratively depicted, in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.
  • The top portion 100 may include a front portion 110, a rear portion 120, two sleeve portions 130, and a neck portion 140.
  • According to an embodiment, the front portion 110 is bifurcated along the front portion 110 from the neck portion 140 down to the bottom of the front portion 110, forming a front portion bifurcation 112 (shown in FIGS. 2A-2B. Along the bifurcation 112 are one or more fasteners 170 designed to connect the two sides of the front portion 110 of the top portion 100 separated by the bifurcation 112. According to an embodiment, the fasteners 170 may include, but are not limited to, hook and loop fasteners, buttons, snaps, zippers, lace and eyelet fasteners, lace and hook fasteners, and/or any other suitable type of fastener. The bifurcation 112 enables the two halves of the front portion 110 to separate (as shown in FIGS. 2A and 2B).
  • According to an embodiment, bifurcation 112 is at a non-vertical angle, splitting the two portions of front portion 110 to be of differing sizes (as shown in FIGS. 3-4).
  • According to an embodiment, bifurcation 112 and bifurcation 132 are connected, either directly or through neck portion 140, enabling the front of the top portion 100 to fold over, enabling quick and easy access to portions of a wearer of the medical garment. According to another embodiment, bifurcation 112 and bifurcation 112 and bifurcation 132 are not connected.
  • According to an embodiment, the top portion 100 is bifurcated along one or both sleeve portions 130 from the neck portion 140 to the opening of the sleeve portion 130, forming a sleeve portion bifurcation 132. According to an embodiment, the bifurcation 132 is positioned over a shoulder area of the sleeve portion 130. Along the bifurcation 132 are one or more fasteners 170 designed to connect the two sides of the sleeve portion 130 separated by the bifurcation 132. According to an embodiment, the fasteners 170 may include, but are not limited to, hook and loop fasteners, buttons, snaps, zippers, lace and eyelet fasteners, lace and hook fasteners, and/or any other suitable type of fastener. The sleeve portions 130 may include short and/or long sleeves. Sleeve length may also be adjustable. The bifurcation enables the two halves of the sleeve portion 130 to separate (as shown in FIGS. 2A and 2B).
  • According to the embodiment shown in FIG. 2A, bifurcation 112 and bifurcation 132 are not connected. According to the embodiment shown in FIG. 2B, bifurcation 112 and bifurcation 132 are connected, either directly or through neck portion 140, enabling the front portion 110 of shirt 100 to fold over.
  • The front portion 110 may include one or more pocket sections 160. The pocket sections 160 may include a flap 165 for closing the pocket sections 160. It is noted, however, that other types of fastening devices may also be used for closing the pocket sections 160. According to an embodiment, one or more of the pocket sections 160 are located over a breast-area of the front portion 110 of the top portion 100.
  • According to an embodiment, below one or more of the pocket sections 160 (shown in FIG. 1) are a secondary bifurcation 114 of the front portion 110. The secondary bifurcation 114 may be perpendicular to bifurcation 112. It is noted, however, that bifurcation 114 may be positioned at any suitable angle, while maintaining the spirit of the present invention. Along the bifurcation 114 are one or more fasteners 170 designed to connect the two sides of the front portion 110 separated by the bifurcation 114. According to an embodiment, the fasteners 170 may include, but are not limited to, hook and loop fasteners, buttons, snaps, zippers, lace and eyelet fasteners, lace and hook fasteners, and/or any other suitable type of fastener. The sleeve portions 130 may include short and/or long sleeves. Sleeve length may also be adjustable.
  • Referring now to FIG. 5, a back view of a bottom portion 200 of a medical garment having long leg portions 220 is illustratively depicted, in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.
  • The bottom portion 200 may include a waist portion 210 and two leg portions 220. The leg portions 220 may be long (as shown in FIGS. 5-8) or short (as shown in FIGS. 9-10). According to an embodiment, the length of the leg portions 220 may be adjustable.
  • According to an embodiment, the waist portion 210 may include an elastic material, a string, and/or any other suitable material configured to help maintain the position of the bottom portion 200 on a wearer.
  • According to an embodiment, one or more of the leg portions 220 are bifurcated along an outer seem of the leg portion 220, extending from waist portion 210 to a lower opening of the leg portion 220, forming one or more leg bifurcations 222. Along the bifurcation 222 are one or more fasteners 270 designed to connect the sections of the leg portions separated by the bifurcation 222. According to an embodiment, the fasteners 270 may include, but are not limited to, hook and loop fasteners, buttons, snaps, zippers, lace and eyelet fasteners, lace and hook fasteners, and/or any other suitable type of fastener. The bifurcation 222 enables the leg portion 220 to open up along the bifurcation 222 (as shown in FIG. 6).
  • According to an embodiment, one or more of the leg portions 220 may include one or more pocket sections 230. These one or more pocket sections 230 may be general pockets and/or configured to perform a specific use such as, but not limited to, storing medical devices, storing catheter bags, storing colostomy bags, and/or any other suitable purpose, while maintaining the spirit of the present invention.
  • Referring now to FIGS. 7 and 9, front views of bottom portions 200 of a medical garment having long leg portions 220 (FIG. 7) and short leg portions (FIG. 9) are illustratively depicted, in accordance with various embodiments of the present invention.
  • According to an embodiment, the bottom portion 200 is bifurcated along the front of the bottom portion 200 between the leg portions 220 and extending from the waist portion 210 to an area wherein the leg portions 210 separate from one another (a groin portion), forming a front bifurcation 224. Along the bifurcation 224 are one or more fasteners 270 designed to connect the sections of the leg portions separated by the bifurcation 224. According to an embodiment, the fasteners 270 may include, but are not limited to, hook and loop fasteners, buttons, snaps, zippers, lace and eyelet fasteners, lace and hook fasteners, and/or any other suitable type of fastener.
  • According to an embodiment, one or more of the leg portions 220 are bifurcated along an inner seem of the leg portion 220, extending from bifurcation 224 to a lower opening of the leg portion 220, forming one or more leg bifurcations 226. Along the bifurcation 226 are one or more fasteners 270 designed to connect the sections of the leg portions separated by the bifurcation 226. According to an embodiment, the fasteners 270 may include, but are not limited to, hook and loop fasteners, buttons, snaps, zippers, lace and eyelet fasteners, lace and hook fasteners, and/or any other suitable type of fastener. These bifurcations 224, 226 enable the portions along the bifurcation to separate (as shown in FIGS. 8 and 10).
  • According to an embodiment, bifurcation 224 and bifurcation 226 enable one or more of the leg portions 220 to fold over (as shown in FIGS. 8 and 10), enabling quick and easy access to portions of a wearer of the medical garment.
  • The present medical garment, consisting of top portion 100 and bottom portion 200 may be configured to be gender-specific or non-gender-specific, depending on the appropriate need for the medical garment.
  • The various bifurcations 112, 114, 132, 222, 224, 226 are configured to enable greater comfort to the wearer of the medical garment (enabling more pre- and post-operative ability while, e.g., getting in and out of bed, while walking, while bending, exercising, etc.) and enable medical access and ease of putting on and taking off the medical garment, further facilitating dressing patients that are immobile, unconscious and/or totally incapacitated. The openings formed by the bifurcations 112, 114, 132, 222, 224, 226 further enable easy access for telemetry, IV ports, medical monitoring, post-operative care, etc.
  • The present garment further enables greater comfort for the wearer while laying down, preventing the tangling of cloth that commonly occurs while wearing common hospital gowns. The full coverage of the top portion 100 and bottom portion 200 of the medical garment further aids in the comfort of many wearers versus the lack of full coverage in common hospital garments.
  • The matching and/or coordinated one piece design of a top portion 100 and a bottom portion 200 further allows for mixing and matching of sizes to accommodate various body types and needs and eliminates the loss and matching of sets during laundering of the top portion 100 and bottom portion 200.
  • When introducing elements of the present disclosure or the embodiment(s) thereof, the articles “a,” “an,” and “the” are intended to mean that there are one or more of the elements. Similarly, the adjective “another,” when used to introduce an element, is intended to mean one or more elements. The terms “including” and “having” are intended to be inclusive such that there may be additional elements other than the listed elements.
  • Although this invention has been described with a certain degree of particularity, it is to be understood that the present disclosure has been made only by way of illustration and that numerous changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention.

Claims (20)

What is claimed is:
1. A medical garment, comprising:
a top portion, the top portion including:
a front portion;
a back portion;
a neck portion; and
two sleeve portions,
wherein the front portion is bifurcated from the neck portion to a bottom of the front portions, forming a first top bifurcation, and
wherein each of the two sleeve portions are bifurcated from the neck portion to a sleeve portion opening, forming two second top bifurcations; and
a bottom portion, the bottom portion including:
a waist portion;
a left leg portion; and
a right leg portion,
wherein the left leg portion and the right leg portion are bifurcated from the waist portion to a groin portion of the bottom portion, forming a first bottom bifurcation, and
wherein the left leg portion and the right leg portion are each bifurcated from the groin portion to a lower end of each of the left leg portion and right leg portion, forming two second bottom bifurcations.
2. The medical garment as recited in claim 1, further comprising:
at least one fastener coupled to ends of the first top bifurcation, two second top bifurcations, first bottom bifurcation, and two second bottom bifurcations,
wherein, for each bifurcation, the at least one fastener is configured to couple one end to a receiving end.
3. The medical garment as recited in claim 2, wherein the at least one fastener is selected from the group consisting of:
hook and loop fasteners;
buttons;
snaps;
zippers;
lace and eyelet fasteners; and
lace and hook fasteners.
4. The medical garment as recited in claim 1, further comprising:
one or more pocket portions coupled to the front portion of the top portion.
5. The medical garment as recited in claim 1, further comprising:
one or more pocket portions coupled to the bottom portion.
6. The medical garment as recited in claim 1, wherein the top portion is further bifurcated below a breast portion of the front portion of the top portion, forming a third top bifurcation.
7. The medical garment as recited in claim 6, wherein the third top bifurcation is approximately perpendicular to the first top bifurcation.
8. The medical garment as recited in claim 6, further comprising:
at least one fastener coupled to ends of the third top bifurcation,
wherein the at least one fastener is configured to couple one end of the third top bifurcation to a receiving end of the third top bifurcation.
9. A medical garment to be worn on an upper portion of a patient, comprising:
a front portion;
a back portion;
a neck portion; and
two sleeve portions,
wherein the front portion is bifurcated from the neck portion to a bottom of the front portion, forming a first bifurcation, and
wherein each of the two sleeve portions are bifurcated from the neck portion to a sleeve portion opening, forming two second bifurcations.
10. The medical garment as recited in claim 9, further comprising:
at least one fastener coupled to ends of the first bifurcation and two second bifurcations,
wherein, for each bifurcation, the at least one fastener is configured to couple one end to a receiving end.
11. The medical garment as recited in claim 10, wherein the at least one fastener is selected from the group consisting of:
hook and loop fasteners;
buttons;
snaps;
zippers;
lace and eyelet fasteners; and
lace and hook fasteners.
12. The medical garment as recited in claim 9, further comprising:
one or more pocket portions coupled to the front portion.
13. The medical garment as recited in claim 9, wherein the medical garment is further bifurcated below a breast portion of the front portion, forming a third bifurcation.
14. The medical garment as recited in claim 13, wherein the third bifurcation is approximately perpendicular to the first bifurcation.
15. The medical garment as recited in claim 14, further comprising:
at least one fastener coupled to ends of the third bifurcation,
wherein the at least one fastener is configured to couple one end of the third bifurcation to a receiving end of the third bifurcation.
16. A medical garment to be worn on a lower portion of a patient, comprising:
a waist portion;
a left leg portion; and
a right leg portion,
wherein the left leg portion and the right leg portion are bifurcated from the waist portion to a groin portion, forming a first bifurcation, and
wherein the left leg portion and the right leg portion are each bifurcated from the groin portion to a lower end of each of the left leg portion and right leg portion, forming two second bifurcations.
17. The medical garment as recited in claim 16, further comprising:
at least one fastener coupled to ends of the first bifurcation and the two second bifurcations,
wherein, for each bifurcation, the at least one fastener is configured to couple one end to a receiving end.
18. The medical garment as recited in claim 17, wherein the at least one fastener is selected from the group consisting of:
hook and loop fasteners;
buttons;
snaps;
zippers;
lace and eyelet fasteners; and
lace and hook fasteners.
19. The medical garment as recited in claim 16, further comprising:
one or more pocket portions.
20. The medical garment as recited in claim 16, wherein the waist portion includes an elastic material.
