Claims. This invention relates to a folding box of paper board construction.

The principal object of the invention is the provision of a folding paper board box formed 5 of a blank providing side and end Walls, the opposite sides oi the box having cooperating end flaps one arranged on the outside and one on the inside of the box to forni a box end, the inside and outside flaps being so constructed as to pyrovide an integral handle which' normally projects perpendicularly to the box end, th'e mentioned flaps also having interengaglng portions adjacent the handle which hold the inside and outside flaps flat against one another and which hold the mentioned aps against opening movements.

Another' object of the invention is the provision of a folding box that; can readily be arranged to form a closed container' having a projecting handle atone end of the box so that the box can -be readily carried, the handle being adapted to be folded flat on the box so as notte project beyond the Width of the box end so that the same box can be used for delivery purposes.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description, thev appended claims and the accompanying drawing, in which,-

Referring more particularly to the drawing by reference numerals, I0 designates a blank of paper board or simi-lar somewhat flexible material,-the blank being cut and scored so that one integral piece may be used to form the entire box. As shown, the blank I 0 comprises opposite box sides4 Il and I2 hinged together by an end- 50 forming portion I3 which is integrall.,4 connected to the portions II and I2, the'lines of bend being scored as indicated at I4. At opposite portions of these sides are end-forming portions or flaps I5 and I5', onevflap I5 being shown turned in and ,35 lying flat against side II. Extending parallel to the portion I3 are the two cooperating end aps I6 and I1.

The end-forming flaps I5 of the side Il are inf` terconnected with the end'flap I6 to provide a corner as shown in Fig. 3. As herein shown this 5 corner is provided by overturning a portionof 'the 4flap I6 and stapling it at I8 to the inturned tween the flaps I5 of side I2 and the end ap Il.

vThe flap I6 is eut to provide a holev 23 preferably rectangular in shape and of such size as to admit four fingers of a person. A cut 24, forming the end of the handle, is also provided at oppo- 20 site sides of the handle-forming portion 25, each cut 24 extending inwardly from the free end oi the flap, preferably transversely as shown. At each side of the handle-forming portion 25 is another cut 29 providing a slot that starts at a 25 point spaced laterally from the end of the handle and preferably outwardly of the handle end, this cut extending out angularly away from the handle end as indicated in Fig. 2. 'Ihe cut. 29 preferably also has a portion 30 extending "par- 30 alle] to the handle.

The end-flap I1 is adapted, when the box is closed, to lie on the outside of the box and overlie the flap I6. The iiap I 'I is provided with a handle-forming portion 32 formed by the cut 35 lines 33, 34. 'I'he sides of the handle portion correspond, in positioning, to the sides of the handle on cooperating ap I6, and the handle-forming portion 32 is also similar in construction to the portion 25 except that the material within 40 the portion 32 is not removed. 'I'his leaves 'a tongue 31 which is adapted to extend under ap I6 when the box is closed. Adjacent the ends of the handle portion 32 the flap I'l is cut to provid outwardly extending edges 35, terminating in hookportions 4I as-shown in Figs. 2 and 4. 'Ihe blank is readily folded along the several scored lines indicated'by the dash lines in Fig. 2, the portions 39 of flaps I5' being turned in to provide closed corners at the ends of side I3, as will be readily understood, and the two end flaps II and I2 brought opposite one another to the position indicated in Fig. 4. The enclosing portions of the box are then telescoped by closing one over the other, flap I6 being placed on the I i linside, while the vflap I1 overlies flap I6 as indicated in Fig. 5. The tongue 31 is placed beneath the free edge portion 40 of ilap I6, the handleforming portions 25 and 32 extending out perpendicularly to the'box end as indicated. The.

corner portions 4I and the cuts 29 adjacent opposite ends of the handle also serve to hold the flaps I6 and I1 one against the other, and the tongue 31 underlying the central portions of the iiap I6 also serve to hold the two end flaps one against the other to provide a firm box closure and to resist bulging tendencies of the end iiaps when the box is carried by the handle. It will be apparentthat since the free end of iiap I1 extends outwardly beyond the handle at oppositel ends thereof and extends through the handle opening so as .tounderlie the iiap I6 by reason of the tongue portion 31, .the two flaps I6 and I1 are adequately held in close contact with one another in such a wa'y as to effectively resist any bulging tendencies tending to separate these flaps when the box is supported by the handle and since the corner' portions 4I are tucked into and hook around the cuts 29 on the inside flap, the box is held against opening.

The handleconstituted by the handle-forming portions 25 and 32, which coincidein position when the box is closed, extends out perpendicularly aty the center of the box end as shown in Fig. 1, when the box is to be carried by a person. However, the handle is so arranged that it can be lreadily folded upon itself so as to lie at against the box end substantially within the connes of the lateral width dimensions of the box end in order that the same box can be used for delivery purposes. The handle- formingportions 25 and 32 are scored along the lines 43, which correspond in position on thetwo handleforming portions, so that the outer end of the handle can be readily folded over and the inner I 4portions of the handle can be folded to either side on the end flap I6 or I1. As the inner portions of the handles are scored along lines 44, and as the total projecting extent of the handle is approximately equal to the width of the box end, it will bev understoodl that the handle can be folded flat against the box end and side to the position indicated in Fig. 6 so as not to project substantially beyond the side. It is held in this `position by an adhesive strip 45 of paper or tape, which is applied over the end of the handle and to the box side I2 so that the entire package is of rectangular outline 4with no projecting portions that would interfere with convenient stacking of a number. of such boxes in an effective manner.

While the form of apparatus herein described constitutes a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to this precise form of apparatus, and

What is claimed is:

I 1. A folding paper box comprising opposite sides hinged together and having cooperating end flaps opposite their hinged connection, one

A folding paperbox comprising opposite sides hinged together and having cooperating end naps opposite their hinged connection, one end flap being arranged on the `utside and one onthe insideof the box to form a box end, said inside and outside flaps each having an integral handle portionk extending perpendicularly to the box end at the center thereof with the two handle-forming portions coinciding when the box is closed, said inside end flap having' a slot adjacent each end-of the handle, the outside end flap projecting beyond the handle ends outwardly thereof and tucked into said slots so as to hold the box closed, said handle portions being scored parallel to the box end ata distance from the box end substantially equal to half the box width so that the handle can be folded flat upon the box.
