This invention relates to buckles particularly of that type used in connection with belts for personal wear, in which the so-called Xed end of the belt is secured or anchored to a pivoted bail or loop which is made in lever form to provide means for adjustably holding the other or free end of the belt in any desired position.

The objects of the invention are;

First, to provide a buckle of the type above indicated, which is adapted not only to have means to removably anchor or secure one end of the belt to the buckle but at the same time enable the wearer, without removal of said belt, or detaching said secured or anchored end of said belt, to reverse .said belt so that either of its two sides may be made to face outwardly or towards the back of front plate of the buckle.

Second, to provide a belt buckle which will permit the use of not only an ordinary type of belt but also a reversible duplex belt adapted for two-fold use, by the easy and quick rotation through one hundred and eighty degrees of the secured or anchored end of said duplex belt for the exposure or display of the selected design, or color on either of the two sides of said belt, and, hence, effect by the use of a single belt and with no additional expense the equivalent of two separate and independent sport or dress belts of different color or design.

Third, to provide a buckle construction which will carry out all the operations, functions and advantages above pointed out without departing from the general shape or design of the adopted and popular types of buckles or including additional parts, and enable the same to be manufactured and ,sold at the same cost or less than similar buckles.

Other objects and advantages of the present invention-will appear as the description of the accompanying drawing proceeds, and the manner of assembling and using the invention are disclosed.

However, it is to be understood that applicants invention is not limited to the exact details herein shown or described, but it is intended to include as part of the same all such obvious changes and modifications of the cooperating parts as would occur to a person skilled in the art and as would fall within the scope of the structural characterestics and relative arrangement of elements to be hereinafter claimed.

Figure 4 is an enlarged rear elevational view, similar to Figure l, with the loop or bail having l0 been turned one hundred degrees, and showing the belt reversed so that its other side, with different color or design, faces away from the front of buckle;

In the practice of this invention, according to the form illustrated in the drawing, the body member of the buckle comprises a front plate I0 provided with rearwardly extending side flanges 30 II, II, having inturned edges I2, I2, under which the free end 4 of the belt 3 is received to be gripped in the body of the buckle in the manner to be presently described.

The front plate I0 is also provided with rear- 35 wardly extending side ears I3, I3, on said flanges I I, I I, in which the clamping member I4is hinged or mounted to swing on its pivots I5, I5, as shown in Figures l and 3. Said clamping member I4 is, preferably, built up, and is provided with a ridged 40 section I6, as illustrated in Figure 8, to frictionally engage and securely clamp the free end 4 of the belt 3 against the inner face of the front plate I0, as is common in this class of belts and needs no further disclosure. 45

Said hinged clamping member I4 is provided at its middle portion, and parallel with the ridged section I6, with .a round hole or opening Il, into which is .seated and rotatably secured an extension I9, formed on the bail or loop I 8, having a belt receiving slot 20, the end 2| of the extension I9 being upset or enlarged to prevent the withdrawal of said extension I9 from the opening Il and insure a permanent rotatable connection between-said clamping member I4 and bail 55 f from the front plate IU and turn the rotatable bail or loop I8, as clearly shown in Figures 5, 6 and 8.

From the foregoing described construction, it will be seen the bail or loop I8 not only moves with Vsaid clamping member I4, having a hinged connection with the front plate- I of the buckle, but also has a rotary movement on said clamping member I4'on its transverse axis, thereby enabling said bail'or loop I 8 to have a combined hinged and pivotal movement or floating rotary motion with respect to said front plate I0, Yfor purposes to be presently described.

The belt length being properly adjusted to fit the Waist of the wearer, the clamping'member I4 is rocked on its pivots I5, I5 by gripping the loop or bail Ill,V or pulling onthe freeend 5 of the belt B attached to said bail I8,

' to force said member I4 and its section I6 to assume the position shown in Figures 2 and 6, and thereby force the ridged section I6 of the clamping member I4 to securely grip the Vproperly adjusted belt under the necessary tension and friction to prevent displacement. Y

If it is desired to reverse the belt B so that the design or color which faces on the inside; as shown in Figure 1, all that is necessary is to unclamp and remove the free end 4 of belt B or loop I8 with the belt end 5 anchored thereto through an angle of one hundred and eighty degrecs into the position shown in Figure 4, and the side of the belt which was'on the inner or side next to the wearer will be reversed and disposed onV the outside and enable` the wearer again to properly clamp the free end 4 of the belt B, as heretofore explained, without having 'been required to detach or disturb the anchored or se-V cured relation of end 5 of belt B with the rotatable bail or loop I8. l

What I claim is: 1. Abuckle for a reversible belt adapted for personal wear, comprising a body section provided with a front plate, clamping means hinged t0 and cooperating with said body section for releasably securing the free end of said belt between said body section and clamping means, and means for securing the other endof the belt to said buckle, said means being rotatably connected to said clamping means about an axis which is angularly related to the hinge axis of said clamp- 2. A buckle for a reversible belt adapted for personal wear, comprising a body section proivided with a front plate, clamping means hinged to and cooperating with said body section for releasably securing the free end of said belt between said body section and clamping means, and means for securing the other end of the belt to said buckle, said means being rotatably connected to said clamping means about an axis which is normally related to the hinge axis of said clamp-v ing means so as to permit the reversibility of said belt with respect to said front plate.

3. A buckle for a reversible belt adapted for personal wear, comprising Ya body section provided with a front plate, clamping means ,hinged to and cooperating with said body section for releasably securing the free end of said belt between said body section and clamping means, and a bail for securing the other end of the belt to said buckle, said bail moving with and being rotatably connected to said clamping means about an axis which is normally related to the hinge axis of said clamping means so as to permit the reversibility of said belt. with respect to said front plate.

4. A buckle for a reversible belt adapted for personal wear, comprising a body section provided with `a V`front plate, a rectangularV shaped vclamping* means hinged to and cooperating with Vclamping means, and means for securing the other` end of the belt to said buckle, said means being rotatably connected to the mid-section of saidV clamping means about an axis which is normally related to the hinge axis of said clamping means so as to permit the reversibility of said belt with respect to said front plate. n e

A :buckle for a reversible belt adapted' for personal wear, comprising a body section provided with a front plate, clamping means parallel to and hinged to and cooperating with said body section for releasably securingv the free end of said belt between said body section and'clamping means, and means for securing the other end 'ofr the belt to said buckle, said means being rotatably connected'substantially through an arc ofvone hundred eighty degrees to saidV clamping means about an axis which is normally related to the hinge axis of said clamping means so as to permit the reversbility of said belt with respect to said front plate.

6. A buckle for a reversible belt adapted for personal Wear, comprising a body section provided with a front plate, a rectangular at clamping means hinged to and cooperating with said body section for releasably securing the free end of said belt between said body section and clamping means, and a flat elongated bail for securing the other end of the belt to said buckle, said bail being rotatably connected at its mid-section to said clamping means about an axis which is normally related to the hinge axis of said clamping means so as to permit the reversibility of said belt with respect to said front plate.
