(C1. 251-92) This invention relates generally to gas cocks and refers more particularly to gas pilot .regulator cocks.
It is well known that the gas pressures vary in 5 different localities and that the gas pressures in any one locality may vary from time to time. Consequently, to compensate for such differential in gas pressures it has been customary in the past to provide restricted gas oriiices with needle valves l which were adjustable relative to tapering seats about said orifices depending upon the gas pressure to control the height of the ilames at the gas jets. However, in practice, such control means became clogged and required adjustment l due primarily to the presence in the gas of a brown substance or other foreign matter which collected on the valve and on its seat and which, being relatively cold at such points, often congealed and blocked or otherwise impeded the 20 passage of gas to the jets. In fact, the accumw. lation has been so bad at times that it has been necessary to disassemble the gas cocks or control devices and clean them before they could be used again.
25 in the present instance, however, 'the dilcuities just mentioned have been overcome entirely by (l) the elimination of such needle valves and their seats, and (2) the provision in a gas cock of pressure regulating means that is seit-cleaning 3o .and that may be readily adjusted to maintain the proper height of the name.

As shown, the casing A is a casting having a central portion I and laterally projecting portions 2 and 3, respectively. Preferably the .an central portion I has a tapered bore or opening i and is provided at the upper end and around a portion of said bore with an arcuate recess 5. Thelateral portion 2 has a longitudinally extend- ,ing inlet passage 6 for conducting gas from a n .Querer-le source such as a gas manifold l tothe bore 4 and 1s provided with an extenoriy threaded 'portion 8 for engagement with such manifold.
The lateral portion 3 has a longitudinally extending outlet passage 9 for conducting gas from the bore 6 to a gas supply tube or pipe I0 for a pilot 5 light or other appliance (not shown) and is provided with a polygonal portion I I. Preferably the passage 6 has a slightly reduced portion I2 at its inner end opening into the bore 4, while the passage 9 has an enlarged interiorly threaded porl0 tion I3 at its outer end for engagement with the pipe I0, a materially reduced portion I4 at the inner end of said interiorly threaded portion I3 and an orifice I 5 at the inner end of said reduced rtion opening into the bore The plug B is also a casting and has a substantially cylindrical head l5, a reduced substantially cylindrical stem Il and a tapered intermediate portion it. AS shown, the head l is provided at its outer free end with a diametrically extending l slot l@ and is provided at one side adjacent its inner end with a laterally projecting pin 20. The stem Il is provided adjacent its lower free end with a transversely extending opening 2i, While the tapered intermediate portion it is provided substantially midway of its ends With a transversely extending passage 22 and an orifice 23.
When the parts are assembled the pin 2t is received. and is adapted to move in the arcuate recess in the casini,Gr while the tapering rintermediate portion it of the plug is received and is adapted to turn in the tapering bore t in the casing. Any suitable means such as a coil spring 2Q, washers 25 and 26 and a Cotter pin 2l may be used to retain` the parts in assembled relation. As shown, the cotter pin. 2l engages the transversely extending opening 2i in the stem while the washers 25 and 2t, respectively, are sleeved on the stem at opposite ends of the spring between the cotter pin and the central portion E of the casing.
Freierably the assembly is such that the passage 22 in the plug is in aligmnent with the passages S and s so that the orifices i5 and 23 are in registration when the pin 26 abuts the end 36 45 oi the arcuate recess and the passage 22 in the plug is disposed at substantiallyA right'angles to the passages and 9 when the pin 2f! abuts the other end ei of said recess. .In this connection it Will be observed that the oriiices l5 and 23 are 50 very small and are formed in relatively thin webs .3Q andvt, respectively, of the plug and casing."
Preferably the orifices I5 and 23 are uniform in size and are in line with the centers` of the passages i3 and In fact, the oriiices I5 and 23 are 55 upon the walls of such passages and without plugging the oriilces. In other words, the construction is self-cleaning. Preferably the side of the oriiices I5 and 23 is determined in relation to the average gas pressure, while the webs Il and l! are each 1/64" thick, making an over-all thickness of nl," when the orifices are in registration.
In use, any suitable tool such as a screw driver (not shown) may be engaged with the :slot Il in the head Ii of the plug to turn the latter so that the orifice 23 may be moved relative' to the oriilce i5.
