  • the invention relates to a system and method for framing a picture and particularly for a picture packaging or storage system that may be assembled into a picture frame.
  • Pictures are obtained in many different ways: They are purchased such as at concerts, exhibitions, conferences and in museums, art galleries, and poster shops to name a few. Diplomas or certificates are handed or mailed to graduates; Pictures may be purchased online; And printing of photographs and canvases has also become popular. In all these cases the recipient must seek out and purchase a suitably sized and aesthetically appropriate frame, and then insert the received/purchased picture since it is not practical to provide a fully assembled frame with the purchase/delivery. It might even be necessary to wait while the picture is framed by a professional picture framer.
  • Framing kits are available but these are notoriously difficult to use since the frame pieces often do not align correctly resulting in a misshapen frame. Also, during assembly, the pressure from attachment of one frame piece may cause others to break apart and with no rigid component to steady the assembled frame, the frame will tend to bow making insertion of the picture very difficult. Further, the recipient may not have the technical skills to assemble a received frame. Still further, some kits do not include all the required parts for framing such as backing boards and the user needs to source these separately which is an inconvenience. Finally, if the assembly of the frame is too complex then the recipient may simply discard it.
  • Pictures generally comprise a material that is flexible and can be rolled up and which therefore requires support from a frame for displaying. This is particularly true for larger pictures, typically but not limited to pictures that are more than 30 cm on the longer side. Larger pictures must have support in order to be properly displayed, but a frame surrounding the picture may not be enough, since a picture that not properly tensioned will tend to sag or bulge where not supported. Larger frames must also include properly tensioned backing material or sufficiently rigid backing material, otherwise the backing material too will tend to bulge or sag. These issues are not resolved by framing kits that do not provide a means to properly tension the picture or backing and that generally don't include rigid backing in order to lighten the frame.
  • U.S. Pat. No. 3,877,572 to Weiner proposes a convertible storage container comprising a plurality of picture framing elements, such as a plurality of slotted joinable framing members that are adapted to form a complete peripheral frame when removed from the container and joined together.
  • the proposed system requires joining of four separate frame members which is very difficult in practice for several reasons as listed above: the frame pieces may not align correctly resulting in a misshapen frame; during assembly, the pressure from attachment of one frame piece may cause others to break apart; and with no rigid component to steady it, the frame will tend to bow making insertion of the picture very difficult.
  • Weiner appears to propose that the transparency accompanying the package is folded which in practice will result in a transparency that, once unfolded, will be too creased and will be impossible to flatten enough for aesthetic usage. Finally, Weiner suggests the use of screws for connecting the frame pieces which adds unnecessary difficulty to the recipient's task since the recipient may not have the appropriate skills or tools.

Abstract

A system and method for packaging and framing a picture comprises a partially assembled frame; wherein the partially assembled frame comprises one of: one fixed frame member is fixedly attached to a backing board adapted for holding the picture; two opposite fixed frame members are fixedly attached to the picture; or two opposite fixed frame members are fixedly attached to a backing board adapted for holding the picture. The system further comprises completion frame members adapted for joining to the fixed frame members to complete a frame for the picture and the partial assembly is adapted for rolling or folding up for packaging the picture.

Description

    FIELD OF THE INVENTION
  • The invention relates to a system and method for framing a picture and particularly for a picture packaging or storage system that may be assembled into a picture frame.
  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • It is common to send pictures by post or courier and in some cases it would be desirable to send a picture such that it is already framed which would allow the recipient to immediately display the received picture in a presentable form. However, since postage of a framed picture makes inefficient use of expensive postage weight/volume it is therefore more common to send the picture unframed.
  • Pictures are obtained in many different ways: They are purchased such as at concerts, exhibitions, conferences and in museums, art galleries, and poster shops to name a few. Diplomas or certificates are handed or mailed to graduates; Pictures may be purchased online; And printing of photographs and canvases has also become popular. In all these cases the recipient must seek out and purchase a suitably sized and aesthetically appropriate frame, and then insert the received/purchased picture since it is not practical to provide a fully assembled frame with the purchase/delivery. It might even be necessary to wait while the picture is framed by a professional picture framer.
  • Framing kits are available but these are notoriously difficult to use since the frame pieces often do not align correctly resulting in a misshapen frame. Also, during assembly, the pressure from attachment of one frame piece may cause others to break apart and with no rigid component to steady the assembled frame, the frame will tend to bow making insertion of the picture very difficult. Further, the recipient may not have the technical skills to assemble a received frame. Still further, some kits do not include all the required parts for framing such as backing boards and the user needs to source these separately which is an inconvenience. Finally, if the assembly of the frame is too complex then the recipient may simply discard it.
  • Pictures generally comprise a material that is flexible and can be rolled up and which therefore requires support from a frame for displaying. This is particularly true for larger pictures, typically but not limited to pictures that are more than 30 cm on the longer side. Larger pictures must have support in order to be properly displayed, but a frame surrounding the picture may not be enough, since a picture that not properly tensioned will tend to sag or bulge where not supported. Larger frames must also include properly tensioned backing material or sufficiently rigid backing material, otherwise the backing material too will tend to bulge or sag. These issues are not resolved by framing kits that do not provide a means to properly tension the picture or backing and that generally don't include rigid backing in order to lighten the frame.
  • The above issues further apply to picture transport and also generally apply to picture storage. Here too, volume is often a limiting factor and there is currently no convenient way to store or transport the picture along with a suitable frame.
  • A further issue with picture mailing, transport and storage is the potential for damage to the picture. In most cases pictures cannot be folded as this would result in irreparable creases. Pictures that are sent in a flat, laid out arrangement are prone to damage and require significant structural support and padding.
  • Finally, when pictures are packaged, with or without frames, they typically require a great deal of packing material for protection (and effort to pack) and this material is typically thrown away and wasted once the picture is opened.
  • Attempts have been made in the past to resolve this issue. For example U.S. Pat. No. 3,877,572 to Weiner proposes a convertible storage container comprising a plurality of picture framing elements, such as a plurality of slotted joinable framing members that are adapted to form a complete peripheral frame when removed from the container and joined together. However, the proposed system requires joining of four separate frame members which is very difficult in practice for several reasons as listed above: the frame pieces may not align correctly resulting in a misshapen frame; during assembly, the pressure from attachment of one frame piece may cause others to break apart; and with no rigid component to steady it, the frame will tend to bow making insertion of the picture very difficult. Further Weiner appears to propose that the transparency accompanying the package is folded which in practice will result in a transparency that, once unfolded, will be too creased and will be impossible to flatten enough for aesthetic usage. Finally, Weiner suggests the use of screws for connecting the frame pieces which adds unnecessary difficulty to the recipient's task since the recipient may not have the appropriate skills or tools.
  • There is therefore an urgent need for a system that allows mailing, transport or storage of a picture along with a frame, that makes efficient usage of required volume and weight, which is simple and quick for the recipient to put into use, that properly tensions the picture, and that does not waste packaging or storage materials.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention overcomes the drawbacks of the prior art by providing a picture packaging system that allows mailing, transport or storage of a picture along with a frame. The frame as described herein comprises partially assembled framing members to enable accurate and simple assembly with no bowing of the frame. Further, efficient usage of packing volume is made, and, in most embodiments, all of the packaging is integral to the frame such that there is no waste of packaging or storage materials. The completed frame of the present invention has the look and feel of picture frames as known in the art and comprises materials and finishes as known for frames in the art and is therefore aesthetically pleasing in addition to being highly functional.
  • The invention as described is a complete packaging solution, ideal for mailing, transport or storage of a picture and further transforms into a stable and aesthetic frame for the same picture. As described further herein, in some embodiments the backing assembly of the frame forms the main enclosure when folded into its packaging form. The backing assembly comprises a backing board and fixedly attached backing frame members to form a partially assembled frame. Alternatively the picture itself is provided with the backing members already fixedly attached to form a partially assembled frame. In essence the frame is easily completed by inserting the picture into the backing assembly and then joining the remaining completion framing members, or, when the fixed frame members are attached to a picture, simply joining the completion framing members to the partially framed picture.
  • For the purposes of packaging and framing or even when provided as a framing kit, the fixed attachment of at least one of the backing frame members to the backing board or to the picture itself results in significant advantages not present in the prior art:
  • The assembly of the frame is greatly simplified as the user only has to position the remaining completion members—whose position is guided by the fixed position of the fixedly attached frame members;
  • The assembled frame is perfectly rectangular since the fixed members are already in the correct position;
  • The fixed members combined with the backing board or the picture itself to provide rigidity such that the subsequent joining of the remaining members may be easily accomplished without the frame assembly bowing;
  • The picture is easily inserted by raising the fixed frames slightly to ease the picture into the gap between them and the backing board. This holds the picture and also optionally a transparent cover firmly in place so that the positioning of the other frame members does not alter the correct picture position; The backing or picture is properly pre-tensioned (pulled taut) in the plane of the fixed framing member which results in increased rigidity of the frame, prevents bulging or sagging of the backing or the picture, and ensures correct positioning and proportions for the picture and the frame;
  • The partially assembled frame, with one or two fixedly attached frame members can be folded or rolled up therefore enabling the packaged mode of the package/frame systems. The embodiments described below further comprise backing materials that can be rolled or folded but which provide rigidity when unrolled.
  • According to some embodiments of the present invention, a packaging and framing system for a picture comprises a partially assembled frame; wherein the partially assembled frame comprises one of: one fixed frame member is fixedly attached to a backing board adapted for holding the picture; two opposite fixed frame members are fixedly attached to the picture; or two opposite fixed frame members are fixedly attached to a backing board adapted for holding the picture. Preferably the system further comprises completion frame members adapted for joining to the fixed frame members to complete a frame for the picture. Preferably the partial assembly is adapted for rolling or folding up.
  • Preferably for packaging of two opposite fixed frame members fixedly attached to a backing board adapted for holding the picture, the picture and the completion members are enclosed inside the partial assembly when the assembly is folded up. Preferably the system further comprises a storage tube and wherein for packaging of the two opposite fixed frame members fixedly attached to a backing board adapted for holding the picture, the picture is wrapped around the tube, the partial assembly is rolled up inside the tube and the completion members are inserted into the tube. Preferably for packaging of two opposite fixed frame members fixedly attached to the picture, the partial assembly is rolled up inside the tube and the completion members are inserted into the tube.
  • Preferably the adaptation for holding the picture comprises the fixed frame members are tilted away from the board for inserting the picture. Preferably the fixed frame members pre-tension the backing board or the picture.
  • According to further embodiments of the present invention a system for packaging and framing a picture comprises: a backing assembly comprising a backing board fixedly attached to two backing frame members; and two cover frame members; wherein the backing assembly is adapted to fold up to package the picture and the cover frame members and wherein the backing assembly is adapted for unfolding and for mounting the picture therein and for joining the cover frame members thereto to frame the picture. Preferably the backing and cover frame members are between 1-6 cm wide. Preferably the joining of the cover frame members is performed using a joining mechanism selected from the group consisting of: joining tabs adapted to fit into joining slots; joining tabs adapted to slot into a groove; dovetail joints; a notch adapted to fit into a groove; magnets; and a combination of the above.
  • Optionally the system further comprises a transparent cover sheet for covering the picture. Optionally the backing board comprises a handle. Preferably the adaptation of the backing assembly for packaging comprises lids and lid tabs for closing the package. Preferably the adaptation for mounting the picture comprises the backing members are tilted away from the board for inserting the picture such that the picture is held between the backing members and the backing assembly. Preferably the backing assembly comprises a backing board and the backing members tension the backing board. Preferably the backing board comprises extensions and the extensions, the lids and the tabs fold to form a stand to support the system.
  • According to further embodiments of the present invention a system for packaging and framing a picture comprises: a storage tube; two cover frame members; and one of: a backing assembly comprising a backing board fixedly attached to two backing frame members; wherein, for packaging, the backing assembly is adapted to roll up for insertion into the tube, the cover frame members fit into the tube and the picture is rolled around the outside of the tube; and wherein the backing assembly is adapted to unroll for mounting the picture therein and for joining the cover frame members thereto to frame the picture; or a picture attached to two backing frame members; wherein, for packaging, the picture is adapted to roll up for insertion into the tube, and the cover frame members fit into the tube; and wherein the picture is adapted to unroll for joining the cover frame members thereto to frame the picture.
  • Preferably the joining of the cover frame members is performed using a joining mechanism selected from the group consisting of: joining tabs adapted to fit into joining slots; joining tabs adapted to slot into a groove; dovetail joints; a notch adapted to fit into a groove; magnets; and a combination of the above. Optionally the system comprises a transparent cover sheet for covering the picture. Preferably the backing board comprises one of fold lines or a plurality of connected slats.
  • According to further embodiments of the present invention a system for packaging and framing a picture comprises: a first fixed framing member fixedly attached to the picture; a second fixed framing member fixedly attached to the picture; and two cover framing members; wherein the first framing member is rolled up into the picture and the picture is packaged within a triangular package formed by the second fixed framing member and the cover framing members; wherein the first and second fixed framing members and the cover framing members are adapted to join together to frame the picture.
  • According to further embodiments of the present invention a method for framing a picture comprises: providing a picture packaging and framing system comprising a folded up backing board and completion frame members, wherein the backing board comprises fixedly attached frame members; unfolding the backing board; inserting the picture under the fixed frame members to thereby hold the picture between the fixed members and the board; and joining the completion frame members to the fixed frame members to thereby frame the picture. Preferably prior to unfolding, the picture and the completion frame members are enclosed in the folded up backing board.
  • According to further embodiments of the present invention a method for framing a picture comprises: providing a picture packaging and framing system comprising the picture rolled up and completion frame members, wherein the picture comprises fixedly attached frame members; unrolling the picture; and joining the completion frame members to the fixed frame members to thereby frame the picture. Preferably the system further comprises a storage tube and the rolled up picture and completion frame members are packaged in the tube. Preferably the system comprises tension bars and the tension bars are installed on the underside of the picture to tension the picture.
  • According to further embodiments of the present invention, a system for packaging and framing a picture comprises: a backing assembly comprising a backing board fixedly attached to two backing frame members; and two cover frame members; wherein the backing assembly unfolds for mounting the picture therein and for joining the cover frame members thereto to frame the picture. Preferably the adaptation for packaging comprises lids and lid tabs for closing the package. Preferably the backing and cover members comprise one or more of plastic, wood, or metal.
  • According to further some embodiments of the present invention, a system for packaging and framing a picture comprises: a backing assembly comprising a backing board fixedly attached to two backing frame members; two cover frame members; and a storage tube; wherein, for packaging, the backing assembly rolls up for insertion into the tube, the cover frame members fit into the tube and the picture is rolled around the outside of the tube; and wherein the backing assembly unrolls for mounting the picture therein and for joining the cover frame members thereto to frame the picture. Preferably the board is scored and folds into a hexagonal shape. Preferably the board comprises slats and rolls into a cylinder.
  • According to further embodiments of the present invention, a system for packaging and framing a picture comprises: two backing frame members fixedly attached to the picture; two cover frame members; and a storage tube; wherein the picture is rolled and the rolled picture and the cover frame members are inserted for packaging into the tube; and wherein the picture unrolls for joining the cover frame members to the backing frame members to frame the picture.
  • According to further embodiments of the present invention, a system for packaging and framing a picture comprises: a backing board adapted for holding the picture, and a framing assembly fixedly attached to the board; wherein the framing assembly comprises framing members, expansion struts and a crossbar; wherein the backing board rolls up to package the picture; wherein the framing assembly opens to frame the picture. Preferably the backing board comprises trapezoid slats. Preferably the backing board comprises a honeycomb structure.
  • According to further embodiments of the present invention, a system for packaging and framing a picture comprises: a flexible frame comprising a sheath for accommodating the picture; and a storage tube; wherein the frame is adapted to be rolled into a cylinder for packaging into the storage tube; and wherein the frame unrolls to frame the picture. Preferably the flexible frame comprises silicone. Preferably the flexible frame comprises a matrix of connected cubes.
  • According to further embodiments of the present invention, a system for packaging and framing a picture comprises: a backing sheet adapted for holding the picture; wherein the backing sheet comprises seams for guiding folding of the sheet to form a frame for the picture; wherein the picture is packaged in the sheet when rolled up.
  • According to further embodiments of the present invention, a framing kit for framing a picture comprises: a backing assembly adapted for folding or rolling up comprising two backing frame members fixedly attached to one of: the picture; or a backing board adapted for holding the picture; and two cover frame members adapted for joining to the backing frame members to form a frame for the picture.
  • According to further embodiments of the present invention, a framing kit for framing a picture comprises: a partially assembled frame; wherein the partially assembled frame comprises one of: one fixed frame member is fixedly attached to a backing board adapted for holding the picture; one fixed frame member is fixedly attached to a picture; two opposite fixed frame members are fixedly attached to the picture; or two opposite fixed frame members are fixedly attached to a backing board adapted for holding the picture.
  • As used herein the term picture describes any one of a photograph, painting, diploma, certificate, poster, puzzle, or other printed, painted or drawn planer image mountable in a frame. The picture may therefore comprise any suitable material including but not limited to paper, cardboard, canvas, photo paper, chromo paper, transparencies, PVC and so forth. The picture material may be any suitable page weight including but not limited to 70-300 g. The picture optionally requires a transparent cover when framed, for protective or aesthetic reasons, or optionally does not require a transparent cover including but not limited to photo paper, laminated pictures, pictures printed on transparencies or PVC, some forms of oil paintings or other forms of pictures not requiring a cover.
  • The system of the present invention is intended for mailing, transporting or storing a picture along with a picture frame. As used herein the term packaging refers to any one of these uses. The term package form is used to describe the system when it is in the form suited for packaging. The term frame form is used to describe the system when it is in the form suited for framing of the picture.
  • The framing members of the present invention are referred to herein as backing frame members and cover frame members. Backing frame members are those frame members that are fixedly attached to either a backing board or to the picture itself to form a partially assembled frame and may be referred to herein as fixed frame members. Cover frame members are those frame members that are joined to backing frame members to complete the assembly of the frame and may be referred to herein as completion frame members.
  • It is also an aim of the present invention to provide a framing kit such that a picture may be acquired along with a partially assembled frame according to one of the embodiments described herein for then framing the acquired picture.
  • Unless otherwise defined, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skill in the art to which this invention belongs. The materials, methods, and examples provided herein are illustrative only and not intended to be limiting.
  • Implementation of the method and system of the present invention involves performing or completing certain selected tasks or steps manually, automatically, or a combination thereof.

  • DESCRIPTION OF SOME EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention in at least some embodiments is a picture packaging and framing system that allows mailing, transport or storage of a picture along with a frame that is partially assembled and simple to complete, that makes efficient usage of packing volume, and that does not waste packaging or storage materials.
  • Reference is now made to FIGS. 1A-1U which are illustrative schematic drawings showing a picture packaging and framing system according to at least some embodiments of the present invention. As shown in FIG. 1A, picture packaging and framing system 80 comprises backing assembly 40, frame cover assembly 50, and picture 26. FIG. 1A shows the components of framing system 80 in an unassembled form. Backing assembly 40 and cover assembly 50 are adapted to fit picture 26 so that picture 26 can be framed in the frame form of system 80.
  • Backing assembly 40 comprises backing board 12 and backing frame members 16 and 18 which are fixedly attached to backing board 12. Frame members 16 and 18 are of equal length and are attached opposite one another on opposing edges of backing board 12. The fixed attachment of backing board 12 to backing frame members 16, 18 is optionally accomplished using staples 36 but may be accomplished using any attachment form known in the art including but not limited to adhesives, rivets, or alternatively by pressure such as where board 12 is inserted into a groove (not shown) in backing frame members 16, 18.
  • Frame members 16 and 18 are two of the four frame members that make up the assembled frame. Frame members 16 and 18 comprise plastic, wood, or metal or any other suitable material used for framing as known in the art. Frame members 16 and 18 comprise any color or finish of frames known in the art. As described above, the fixed attachment of frame members 16 and 18 to backing board 12 provides multiple benefits including easier assembly of the frame, more accurate assembly, increased rigidity, and simple and accurate positioning and holding of picture 26.
  • Backing board 12 preferably comprises cardboard, plastic, wood or other rigid material. Board 12 comprises fold lines 8 which are scorings or perforations into board 12 for enabling and guiding folding of board 12 as described below. Backing board 12 comprises extensions 10. Backing assembly 40 further comprises lids 14 and lid tabs 46 which are used for closing assembly 80 as described further below.
  • Backing board 12 optionally comprises mounting holes 28 for mounting the assembled frame form of system 80, such as on a wall using supplied nail or screw 45. Backing board 12 preferably comprises carrying handles 44 for carrying system 80 when in a package form as shown further below. Handles 44 preferably fold flat into board 12. The holes 43 in handles 44 can also be used for mounting the assembled frame form of system 80, such as on a wall using supplied nail or screw 45. Mounting holes 28 or 43 are preferably used depending on the orientation of the framed picture (portrait or landscape).
  • Frame cover assembly 50 comprises transparent cover sheet 20. Cover sheet 20 preferably comprises plastic or other suitable transparent material including but not limited to polycarbonate, PET, PVC, and so forth. As shown in FIG. 1A, cover sheet 20 is preferably provided with protective backing sheets 9. Backing sheets 9 are removed before attachment of cover assembly 50 to backing assembly 40 as described further below. Cover assembly 50 comprises cover frame members 22 and 24 which are here shown attached to transparent sheet 20. Alternatively as shown in FIG. 1B, transparent sheet 20 and cover members 22 and 24 are not attached and must be assembled as part of the assembly of system 80. Cover frame members 22, 24 are two of the four framing members that make up the assembled frame. Cover frame members 22, 24 comprise plastic, wood, or metal or any other suitable material used for framing as known in the art. Frame members 22, 24 preferably comprise any color or finish of frames known in the art. Frame members 22, 24 preferably comprise the same material and finish as backing members 16, 18.
  • In use, picture 26 is readied for packaging as shown in FIG. 1C by rolling picture 26 into a cylinder, and also rolling cover assembly 50 into a cylinder. Picture 26 is then inserted into assembly 50 and these are placed in the middle of backing assembly 40 as shown in FIG. 1D. As shown in FIGS. 1E-1J, backing assembly 40 is folded along fold lines 8 to enclose assembly 50 with picture 26 rolled up inside. FIG. 1G shows the final packaged form of system 80 where system 80 has the form of a rectangular package. FIG. 1H is an enlargement showing the positioning of the contents of the package form of system 80. Finally as shown in FIG. 1J, lids 14 are folded so as to close the package form of system 80 with lid tabs 46 folded therein. Closing tabs 48 are used to hold handles 44 together and function together with lids 14 and lid tabs 46 to keep system 80 closed when in package form.
  • System 80 may now be carried such as by handle 44, or may be mailed or stored. Backing board 12 provides the required rigidity to protect picture 26 which is rolled up therein along with framing members 16, 18, 22 and 24, and transparent sheet 20. System 80 is preferably purchased in the package form such as where a picture 26 is sold with a frame as system 80. Optionally system 80 is sold without picture 26 as a kit for packaging and framing picture 26.
  • FIG. 1K shows the system of FIG. 1B enclosed in the package form of system 80. As shown, cover members 22, 24 are not attached to sheet 20 but are enclosed by backing assembly 40.
  • FIGS. 1L-1S show the process of assembling a framed picture once the package of FIG. 1J is received. The package is opened and the contents extracted by reversing the steps as shown in FIGS. 1C-1J. The extracted contents as shown in FIG. 1L comprise backing assembly 40 (here shown face-up and with lids 14, tabs 46, and backing extensions 10 folded behind cover assembly 50. The folding of extensions 10 provides further rigidity to backing board 12 and also serves to flatten backing board 12.
  • As shown in FIGS. 1M and 1N picture 26 is now inserted into backing assembly 40. To insert picture 26, backing members 16 and 18 are tilted away from board 12 for insertion of picture 26 into slots 30. Backing members 16 and 18 thereinafter hold picture 26 in position by pressing the horizontal edges of picture 26 between members 16 and 18 and board 12.
  • As shown in FIGS. 1O-1P, cover assembly is now attached to backing assembly so as to cover picture 26 with transparent sheet 20 and so as to form the completed frame form of system 80.
  • For joining backing frame members 16 and 18 with cover frame members 22 and 24, system 80 comprises a joining mechanism. Backing frame members 16, 18 and cover frame members 22, 24 are here shown with edges joining at a 45 degree angle as known for frames in the art but may optionally join at any angle and the figures should not be considered limiting. Multiple optional embodiments of joining mechanism are contemplated as shown in FIGS. 1P-1 to 1P-7B. System 80 may comprise one or more of the joining mechanism described herein or any other suitable joining mechanism as known in the art and the embodiments described should not be considered limiting.
  • In one optional embodiment of joining mechanism shown in FIGS. 1O and 1P-1, backing members 16, 18 comprise joining tabs 34, which match joining slots 32 found in cover members 22, 24 and are held in position once joined by pressure on tabs 34 inside slots 32. Thus tabs 34 are pressed into slots 32 for the four corners where backing members join to cover members.
  • The joining mechanism of FIG. 1P-2 comprises straight tabs 34 which slot into groove 32;
  • The joining mechanism of FIG. 1P-3 comprises a dovetail joint where dovetail pin 34 is a separate piece from dovetail tails 32 cut into members 16, 18, 22, 24;
  • The joining mechanism of FIG. 1P-4 comprises a dovetail joint where dovetail pin 34 is part of one of the frame members 16, 18 and the dovetail tail 32 is part of frame members 22, 24 (or vice versa);
  • The joining mechanism of FIG. 1P-5 comprises a notch 34 that fits into a groove (not shown) on the joining member;
  • The joining mechanism of FIG. 1P-6 comprises magnets 34 that join to magnets (not shown) on the joining member or to a metallic surface (not shown) on the joining member; The joining mechanism of FIGS. 1P-7A and 1P-7B comprises join supports 33 for supporting the joins of the members 16, 18, 22, 24. Join supports 33 are used where members 16, 18, 22, 24 fit together tightly and supports 33 are needed to prevent slight shifts in the alignment of the completed frame. Supports 33 are preferably held in place by pressure.
  • To ensure that lids 14, and extensions 10 remain flat, such as when system 80 is mounted, such as on a wall, optional closing tabs 54 are provided on cover members 22, 24 for bending down onto backing board 12 as shown in FIG. 1Q. The assembled frame form of system 80 is shown in FIG. 1R. Optionally, as shown in FIGS. 1S and 1T, lids 14 and backing extensions 10 are folded so as to function as a stand for the frame form of system 80. In practice part of extension 10 is torn along the perforation with backing board 12 and then lid tabs 46 are placed over the bent section of extension 10 to form the stand.
  • FIG. 1U shown the joining step of FIGS. 1O and 1P but with the system 80 of FIG. 1B where cover members 22, 24 are not attached to transparent sheet 20. In this case sheet 20 is positioned over picture 26 and is also held in slot 30 by tilting backing members 16, 18. Once sheet 20 is in place, cover members 22, 24 are joined to backing members 16, 18 using the joining mechanism such as tabs 34 inserted into slots 32.
  • In light of the above description it should therefore be appreciated that system 80 fully functions in both its packaging form to enclose and protect picture 26 for mailing, transport or storage and also in its frame form to frame picture 26. As shown, all of the components used in the package form of system 80 have been used in the frame form of system 80 and therefore system 80 is highly ecologically efficient.
  • Reference is now made to FIGS. 2A-2I which are illustrative schematic drawings showing a picture packaging and framing system according to at least some embodiments of the present invention. As shown in FIG. 2A, picture packaging and framing system 200 comprises backing assembly 40, cover frame members 22 and 24, and transparent cover sheet 20. System 200 further comprises storage tube 64 and outer cover 62. Storage tube 64 comprises cardboard, plastic or other rigid material. Outer cover 62 comprises plastic or other durable material for protecting the contents of system 200. Outer cover 62 is preferably transparent so that pictures 26 or 68 are visible through it.
  • System 200 comprises at least one picture 26 and optionally additional picture 68, puzzle pieces 72 for assembling an included puzzle and/or drawing materials such as crayons 74 such as where pictures 26 or 68 are to be colored in. Backing assembly 40 and cover sheet 20 are adapted to fit pictures 26 and 68 so that picture 26 or picture 68 can be framed in the frame form of system 200.
  • Optionally, cover sheet 20 comprises protective backing sheets 9 as in FIG. 1A which are removed before attachment of cover sheet 20 to backing assembly 40. Cover sheet 20 preferably comprises plastic or other suitable transparent material.
  • Backing assembly 40 comprises backing board 12 and backing frame members 16 and 18 which are fixedly attached to backing board 12. The fixed attachment of backing board 12 to backing frame members 16, 18 is accomplished as described above with reference to FIG. 1A and provides the benefits as described hereinabove. Frame members 16 and 18 are of equal length and are attached opposite one another on opposing edges of backing board 12.
  • Frame members 16 and 18 are two of the four frame members that make up the assembled frame and comprise the materials and finishes as described with reference to FIG. 1A above. Backing board 12 preferably comprises materials as described with reference to FIG. 1A above. Board 12 comprises fold lines 8 which are scored into board 12 for folding of board 12 as described below.
  • Backing board 12 optionally comprises mounting holes 28 and 44 for mounting the assembled frame form of system 200, such as on a wall using a nail or screw (not shown) which is optionally supplied with system 200.
  • Cover frame members 22, 24 are two of the four framing members that make up the assembled frame. Cover frame members 22, 24 comprise materials and finishes as described with reference to FIG. 1A above. Cover frame members 22, 24 are here shown detached from cover sheet 20 but alternatively cover frame members 22, 24 are provided attached to cover sheet 20.
  • In use, picture 26 is readied for packaging as shown in FIGS. 2B and 2C by laying pictures 26 and 68 onto outer cover 62 and then rolling these around storage tube 64 into a cylinder. As shown, outer cover 62 preferably has a handle 66 formed by scoring parallel cuts into outer cover 62. Cover sheet 20 is also rolled into a cylinder for insertion into storage tube 64. Assembly 40 is folded as shown into a hexagonally shaped structure for insertion into storage tube 64. Cover members 22, 24 are also inserted into tube 64.
  • FIG. 2D shows the final packaged form of system 200. FIG. 2E is an enlargement showing the positioning of the contents of the package form of system 200. Finally as shown in FIG. 2F, lid 67 is folded so as to close the package form of system 200. Optionally outer cover 62 comprises a groove and slot (not shown) for closing to keep system 200 closed when in package form.
  • System 200 may now be carried such as by handle 66, or may be mailed or stored. Outer cover 62 combined with storage tube 64 provide the required rigidity to protect picture 26 along with framing assembly 40, cover members 22, 24, transparent sheet 20, and optional contents such as coloring materials 74 or puzzle pieces 72. System 200 is preferably purchased in the package form such as where a picture 26 is sold with a frame as system 200. Optionally system 200 is sold without picture 26 as a kit for packaging, and framing picture 26. System 200 is preferably sold as a kit comprising one or more pictures 26, 68, and contents 74 which as stated above could be designed for coloring in. Alternatively system 200 could comprise a puzzle for assembly and framing using system 200. It is envisaged system 200 would be sold with picture 26 rolled facing outward such that it is visible through outer cover 62. Optionally tube 64 is also transparent such as when picture 26 has transparent portions such that all of system 200 is visible through the layers that form it in package mode. Optionally, a purchaser could purchase a picture 26 and then purchase storage system 200 for transport and framing of the acquired picture 26. Picture 26 could then be rolled around tube 64 along with outer cover 62 to protect picture 26. The purchaser could then use system 200 to frame picture 26.
  • FIGS. 2G-2I show the process of assembling a framed picture 26 once the package of FIG. 2F is opened. The package is opened and the contents extracted by reversing the steps as shown in FIGS. 2A-2F.
  • As shown in FIG. 2G picture 26 is now inserted into backing assembly 40. To insert picture 26, backing members 16 and 18 are tilted away from board 12 for insertion of picture 26 into slots 30. Backing members 16 and 18 thereinafter hold picture 26 in position by pressing the horizontal edges of picture 26 between members 16 and 18 and board 12.
  • As shown in FIG. 2H cover sheet 20 is positioned over picture 26 and is also held in slot 30 by tilting backing members 16, 18. Once sheet 20 is in place, cover members 22, 24 are joined to backing members 16, 18 using a joining mechanism such one or more of the mechanism described above with reference to FIGS. 1P-1 to 1P-7B so as to form the completed frame form of system 200. Multiple optional embodiments of joining mechanism are contemplated as shown in FIGS. 1P-1 to 1P-7B. System 200 may comprise one or more of the joining mechanism described herein or any other suitable joining mechanism as known in the art and the embodiments described should not be considered limiting. Cover members 22, 24 optionally comprise closing tabs 54 for bending down onto backing board 12 as shown in FIG. 1Q. The assembled frame form of system 200 is shown in FIG. 2I along with storage tube 64 surrounded by outer cover which is used for storage of additional pictures 68, or contents such as 74, 72.
  • In light of the above description it should therefore be appreciated that system 200 fully functions in both its packaging form to enclose and protect picture 26 for mailing, transport or storage and also in its frame form to frame picture 26. As shown, all of the components used in the package form of system 200 have been used in the frame form of system 200 and storage tube 64 and outer cover 62 are used for storage and therefore system 200 is highly ecologically efficient.
  • Reference is now made to FIGS. 3A-3I which are illustrative schematic drawings showing a picture packaging and framing system according to at least some embodiments of the present invention. As shown in FIG. 3A, picture packaging and framing system 300 comprises backing assembly 40, cover frame assembly 50, and transparent cover sheet 20. System 300 further comprises storage tube 64 and outer cover 62. Storage tube 64 comprises cardboard, plastic or other rigid material. Outer cover 62 comprises plastic or other durable material for protecting the contents of system 300. Outer cover 62 is preferably transparent so that pictures 26 or 68 are visible through it.
  • System 300 comprises at least one picture 26 and optionally additional picture 68, puzzle pieces 72 for assembling an included puzzle and/or drawing materials (not shown) such as crayons such as where pictures 26 or 68 are to be colored in. Backing assembly 40 and cover sheet 20 are adapted to fit pictures 26 and 68 so that picture 26 or picture 68 can be framed in the frame form of system 300.
  • Cover assembly 50 comprises cover frame members 22, 24 attached to transparent cover sheet 20. Optionally cover frame members 22, 24 are provided separately from cover sheet 20. Cover frame members 22, 24 are two of the four framing members that make up the assembled frame. Cover frame members 22, 24 comprise materials and finishes as described with reference to FIG. 1A above. Cover frame members 22, 24 are here shown detached from cover sheet 20 but alternatively cover frame members 22, 24 are provided attached to cover sheet 20. Optionally, cover sheet 20 comprises protective backing sheets 9 as in FIG. 1A which are removed before attachment of cover sheet 20 to backing assembly 40. Cover sheet 20 preferably comprises plastic or other suitable transparent material.
  • Backing assembly 40 comprises backing board 12 and backing frame members 16 and 18 which are fixedly attached to backing board 12. The fixed attachment of backing board 12 to backing frame members 16, 18 is accomplished as described above with reference to FIG. 1A and provides the benefits as described hereinabove. Backing board 12 of system 300 optionally comprises a board with multiple score lines 6 to provide rigidity while at the same time being easy to roll up. Board 12 preferably comprises materials as described with reference to FIG. 1A above. Board 12 optionally comprises a corrugated cardboard or plastic or a wood prepared in connected slats as shown. Frame members 16 and 18 are of equal length and are attached opposite one another on opposing edges of backing board 12.
  • Backing board 12 optionally comprises mounting holes 28 and 44 for mounting the assembled frame form of system 300, such as on a wall using a nail or screw (not shown) which is optionally supplied with system 300.
  • In use, picture 26 is readied for packaging as shown in FIGS. 3B and 3C by laying pictures 26 and 68 onto outer cover 62 and then rolling these around storage tube 64 into a cylinder. As shown, outer cover 62 preferably has a handle 66 formed by scoring parallel cuts into outer cover 62. Cover assembly 50 is also rolled into a cylinder for insertion into storage tube 64. Assembly 40 is rolled as shown into a cylinder for insertion into storage tube 64 which is possible due to the scored backing board 12.
  • FIG. 3D shows the final packaged form of system 300. FIG. 3E is an enlargement showing the positioning of the contents of the package form of system 300. Finally as shown in FIG. 3F, lid 67 is folded so as to close the package form of system 300. Optionally outer cover 62 comprises a groove and slot (not shown) for closing to keep system 300 closed when in package form.
  • System 300 may now be carried such as by handle 66, or may be mailed or stored. Outer cover 62 combined with storage tube 64 provide the required rigidity to protect picture 26 along with framing assembly 40, cover assembly 50, and optional contents such as coloring materials or puzzle pieces. System 300 is preferably purchased in the package form such as where a picture 26 is sold with a frame as system 300. Optionally system 300 is sold without picture 26 as a kit for packaging, and framing picture 26. System 300 is preferably sold as a kit comprising one or more pictures 26, 68, and contents 74 which as stated above could be designed for coloring in. Alternatively system 300 could comprise a puzzle for assembly and framing using system 300. It is envisaged system 300 would be sold with picture 26 rolled facing outward such that it is visible through outer cover 62. Optionally tube 64 is also transparent such as when picture 26 has transparent portions such that all of system 300 is visible through the layers that form it in package mode. Optionally, a purchaser could purchase a picture 26 and then purchase system 300 for transport and framing of the acquired picture 26. Picture 26 could then be rolled around tube 64 along with outer cover 62 to protect picture 26. The purchaser could then use system 300 to frame picture 26.
  • FIGS. 3G-3I show the process of assembling a framed picture 26 once the package of FIG. 3F is opened. The package is opened and the contents extracted by reversing the steps as shown in FIGS. 3A-3F.
  • As shown in FIG. 3G picture 26 is now inserted into backing assembly 40. To insert picture 26, backing members 16 and 18 are tilted away from board 12 for insertion of picture 26 into slots 30. Backing members 16 and 18 thereinafter hold picture 26 in position by pressing the horizontal edges of picture 26 between members 16 and 18 and board 12.
  • As shown in FIG. 3H cover assembly 50 is joined to backing members 16 and 18 using a joining mechanism, such one or more of the mechanism described above with reference to FIGS. 1P-1 to 1P-7B so as to form the completed frame form of system 300. Multiple optional embodiments of joining mechanism are contemplated as shown in FIGS. 1P-1 to 1P-7B. System 300 may comprise one or more of the joining mechanism described herein or any other suitable joining mechanism as known in the art and the embodiments described should not be considered limiting. Cover members 22, 24 optionally comprise closing tabs 54 for bending down onto backing board 12 as shown in FIG. 1Q. The assembled frame form of system 300 is shown in FIG. 3I along with storage tube 64 surrounded by outer cover which is used for storage of additional pictures 68, or contents such as 74, 72.
  • In light of the above description it should therefore be appreciated that system 300 fully functions in both its packaging form to enclose and protect picture 26 for mailing, transport or storage and also in its frame form to frame picture 26. As shown, all of the components used in the package form of system 300 have been used in the frame form of system 300 and storage tube 64 and outer cover 62 are used for storage and therefore system 300 is highly ecologically efficient.
  • Reference is now made to FIGS. 4A-4K which are illustrative schematic drawings showing a picture packaging and framing system according to at least some embodiments of the present invention. As shown in FIG. 4A, picture packaging and framing system 400 comprises picture assembly 440, rigid case 464, and cover frame members 22 and 24. Rigid case 464 comprises cardboard, plastic or other rigid material for protecting the contents of system 400. Rigid case 464 comprises handle 466 for carrying case 464.
  • Picture assembly comprises picture 26 and backing frame members 16 and 18 which are fixedly attached to picture 26 using any attachment form known in the art including but not limited to staples, adhesives, rivets, or alternatively by pressure such as where picture 26 is inserted into a groove (not shown) in backing frame members 16, 18. The fixed attachment of picture 26 to backing frame members 16, 18 provides the benefits as described hereinabove. Frame members 16 and 18 are of equal length and are attached opposite one another on opposing edges of picture 26.
  • Picture assembly optionally comprises transparent cover sheet 20 fixedly attached to frame members 16 and 18 instead of picture 26. When system 400 comprises cover sheet 20 it further comprises under sheet 4. Picture 26 is inserted into the sheath 76 created between cover sheet 20 and under sheet 4. Optionally, cover sheet 20 comprises a protective backing sheet 9 as in FIG. 1A which is removed before display of the frame form of system 400. Cover sheet 20 and under sheet 4 preferably comprises plastic or other suitable transparent material.
  • Cover frame members 22, 24 are two of the four framing members that make up the assembled frame form of system 400. Cover frame members 22, 24 comprise materials and finishes as described with reference to FIG. 1A above. Cover frame members are of equal length.
  • In use, picture 26 is readied for packaging as shown in FIGS. 4B-4E. As shown, picture assembly 440 is rolled into a cylinder and inserted into rigid case 464. Frame members 22, 24 are also inserted into rigid case 464.
  • FIGS. 4D and 4E show the final packaged form of system 400 where lid 467 is closed so as to close the package form of system 400. System 400 may now be carried such as by handle 466, or may be mailed or stored. Case 464 provides the required rigidity to protect picture assembly 440 along with cover members 22, 24. System 400 is preferably purchased in the package form such as where a picture 26 is sold with a partially assembled frame as system 400.
  • FIGS. 4F-4I show the process of assembling a framed picture 26 once the package of FIG. 4E is opened. The package is opened and the contents extracted by reversing the steps as shown in FIGS. 4A-4E.
  • As shown in FIG. 4F cover members 22, 24 are joined to backing members 16 and 18 using a joining mechanism, such one or more of the mechanism described above with reference to FIGS. 1P-1 to 1P-7B so as to form the completed frame form of system 400. Multiple optional embodiments of joining mechanism are contemplated as shown in FIGS. 1P-1 to 1P-7B. System 400 may comprise one or more of the joining mechanism described herein or any other suitable joining mechanism as known in the art and the embodiments described should not be considered limiting.
  • As shown in FIGS. 4H and 4I picture 26 is folded around its edges 36 for attachment to framing members 16, 18. Similarly it is folded around edges 52 for attachment to framing members 22 and 24. Framing members 16, 18, 22 and 24 comprise a tension bar 38 which folds down to press against and properly tension picture 26.
  • FIGS. 4J and 4K illustrate the system 400 comprising cover sheet 20 and under sheet 4 and show sheath 76 for insertion of picture 26. Tension bars 36 are also used in this embodiment of system 400 as shown to properly tension under sheet 4, cover sheet 20 and picture 26.
  • Cover members 22, 24 optionally comprise closing tabs as in FIG. 1A for bending down onto picture 26.
  • The assembled frame form of system 400 is shown in FIG. 4G.
  • In light of the above description it should therefore be appreciated that system 400 fully functions in both its packaging form to enclose and protect picture 26 for mailing, transport or storage and also in its frame form to frame picture 26.
  • Reference is now made to FIGS. 5A-5F which are illustrative schematic drawings showing a picture packaging and framing system according to at least some embodiments of the present invention. As shown in FIG. 5A, picture packaging and framing system 500 comprises backing board 510 which is shown rolled into a cylinder for the package form of system 500. FIG. 5B shows an enlarged view of the contents of system 500 comprising framing assembly 570 and showing the structure of backing board 510 which comprises multiple trapezoidal slats 530 that provide rigidity for board 510 both when rolled up and when laid flat.
  • As shown in FIGS. 5C and 5D system 500 is unrolled to reveal picture 526 covered by transparent cover sheet 520 which are fixedly attached to backing board 510. Framing assembly 570 is shown folded with one backing member 516 fixedly attached to backing board 510.
  • To complete the frame form of system 500 framing assembly 570 is unfolded as shown in FIG. 5E. Backing member 516 remains fixed to backing board 510 while the remaining three framing members 517, 518, and 519 are moved into position. Framing assembly 570 comprises framing expansion struts 550 and crossbar 588 that support framing assembly 570 and aid in the correct positioning of framing members 517-519. Bar 588 passes under transparency 520 and when unfolding, bar 588 ensures that framing member 518 remains parallel to member 516 and also stops where picture 526 and cover 520 are attached to board 510 to pull framing assembly to full size. Once members 517-519 are completely unfolded the magnetic tips 540 of members 516-519 lock members 516-519 into position. FIG. 5F shown system 500 in its frame form. Backing board 512 preferably comprises mounting hole 528 such as for mounting system 500.
  • Frame members 516-519 comprise materials and finishes as described with reference to the frame members of FIG. 1A above.
  • When rolled up as shown in FIG. 5A system 500 may be carried, mailed or stored. Rolled up board 510 provides the required rigidity to protect picture 526 along with framing members 516-519. System 500 is preferably purchased in the package form such as where a picture 526 is sold already inserted inside cover 520 with a frame as system 500. Alternatively picture 526 is sold along with system 500.
  • In light of the above description it should therefore be appreciated that system 500 fully functions in both its package form to enclose and protect picture 526 for mailing, transport or storage and also in its frame form to frame picture 526. As shown, all of the components used in the package form of system 500 have been used in the frame form of system 500 and therefore system 500 is highly ecologically efficient.
  • Reference is now made to FIGS. 6A-6E which are illustrative schematic drawings showing a picture packaging and framing system according to at least some embodiments of the present invention. As shown in FIG. 6A, picture packaging and framing system 600 comprises backing board 610 which is shown rolled into a cylinder for the package form of system 600. Backing board 610 comprises a material with a honeycomb such as but not limited to cardboard or plastic. The honeycomb structure provides rigidity for board 610 both when rolled up and when laid flat
  • As shown in FIGS. 6B and 6C system 600 is unrolled to reveal picture 626 covered by transparent cover sheet 520 which are fixedly attached to backing board 610. Framing assembly 670 is shown folded with one backing member 616 fixedly attached to backing board 610.
  • To complete the frame form of system 600 framing assembly 670 is unfolded as shown in FIG. 6D. Backing member 616 remains fixed to backing board 610 while the remaining three framing members 617, 618, and 619 are moved into position. Framing assembly 670 comprises framing expansion struts 650 and bar 688 that support framing assembly 670 and aid in the correct positioning of framing members 617-619. Bar 688 passes under transparency 620 and when unfolding, bar 688 ensures that framing member 618 remains parallel to member 616. Once members 617-619 are completely unfolded the magnetic tips 640 of members 616-619 lock members 616-619 into position. FIG. 6E shown system 600 in its frame form. Backing board 612 preferably comprises a mounting hole (not shown) such as for mounting system 600.
  • Frame members 616-619 comprise materials and finishes as described with reference to the frame members of FIG. 1A above. When rolled up as shown in FIG. 6A system 600 may be carried, mailed or stored. Rolled up board 610 provides the required rigidity to protect picture 626 along with framing members 616-619. System 600 is preferably purchased in the package form such as where a picture 626 is sold already inserted inside cover 520 with a frame as system 600. Alternatively picture 526 is sold along with system 600.
  • In light of the above description it should therefore be appreciated that system 600 fully functions in both its package form to enclose and protect picture 626 for mailing, transport or storage and also in its frame form to frame picture 626. As shown, all of the components used in the package form of system 600 have been used in the frame form of system 600 and therefore system 600 is highly ecologically efficient.
  • Reference is now made to FIGS. 7A-7H which are illustrative schematic drawings showing a picture packaging and framing system according to at least some embodiments of the present invention. FIG. 7A shows picture packaging and framing system 700 in a packaged form. System 700 comprises backing members 717 and 716 as well as cover frame members 718 and 719. As shown picture 726 is enclosed by a triangular package formed from members 717, 718, and 719 and is rolled around backing member 716. Notches 748 wedge into corresponding slots 749 to hold the package form of system 700 together.
  • When opened as in FIGS. 7B and 7C, picture 726 is unrolled. As shown, picture 726 is fixedly attached to backing members 716 and 717. Cover frame members 718 and 719 comprise hinges 735. FIG. 7D shows picture 726 placed face down. As shown, backing members 716 and 717 comprise foldable corners 730.
  • Frame members 716 and 717 are fixedly attached to picture 726 using any attachment form known in the art including but not limited to staples, adhesives, or rivets and so forth. The fixed attachment of picture 726 to backing frame members 716, 717 provides the benefits as described hereinabove. Frame members 716 and 717 are of equal length but as shown frame member 716 is narrower than frame member 717 to enable, respectively, frame member 716 to be rolled up in the package form of system 700 and such that frame member 717 is the same width as members 718 and 719 to form an equilateral triangle enclosure for packaging. Frame members 716 and 717 are attached opposite one another on opposing edges of picture 726. Cover frame members 718 and 719 are of equal length and width. Frame members 716-719 comprise materials and finishes as for frame members of FIG. 1A.
  • The assembly of the frame form of system 700 is shown in FIGS. 7E-7H. As shown in FIG. 7E backing members 716 and 717 are folded inwards towards picture 726. As shown in FIG. 7F cover frame members 718 and 719 are placed onto picture 726 such that notches 748 wedge into slots 749 to hold the four framing members 716, 717, 718, 719 together. As shown in FIG. 7G foldable corners 730 are folded over along with outer parts 731 of cover members 718 and 719 at hinges 735 to complete the framing of picture 726 which is shown face-up in FIG. 7H.
  • In its package form system 700 may be carried or may be mailed or stored. The triangular combination of members 717, 718, 719 provides the required rigidity to protect picture 726. System 700 is preferably purchased in the package form such as where a picture 726 is sold with a frame as system 700.
  • In light of the above description it should therefore be appreciated that system 700 fully functions in both its packaging form to enclose and protect picture 726 for mailing, transport or storage and also in its frame form to frame picture 726. All of the parts used for the package form of system 700 are used in the frame form making system 700 ecologically efficient.
  • Reference is now made to FIGS. 8A-8E which are illustrative schematic drawings showing a picture packaging and framing system according to at least some embodiments of the present invention. As shown in FIG. 8A, picture packaging and framing system 800 comprises picture assembly 840, rigid storage tube 64 and outer cover 62. Storage tube 64 comprises cardboard, plastic or other rigid material. Outer cover 62 comprises plastic or other durable material for protecting the contents of system 800. Outer cover 62 is preferably transparent so that pictures 26 or 68 are visible through it.
  • Picture assembly 840 comprises picture 26, transparent cover sheet 20, and flexible frame 92. Cover sheet 20 is fixedly attached to frame 92 on three of its sides thus creating a transparent sheath 76 for insertion or removal of picture 26 or any other picture. Flexible frame 92 comprises silicone, plastic or other flexible material of an appropriate thickness that enables frame 92 to be rolled up (as shown below). Picture assembly 840 preferably comprises adhesive 96 on its underside for adhering assembly 840 to a displaying surface such as a wall following removal of backing sheet 98 (FIG. 8E).
  • System 800 comprises at least one picture 26 and optionally additional picture 68, and/or drawing materials 74 such as crayons such as where pictures 26 or 68 are to be colored in. Cover sheet 20 preferably comprises plastic or other suitable transparent material as described with reference to FIG. 1A.
  • In use, picture 26 is readied for packaging as shown in FIGS. 8B-8D by laying pictures 68 onto outer cover 62 and then rolling these around storage tube 64 into a cylinder. As shown, outer cover 62 preferably has a handle 66 formed by scoring parallel cuts into outer cover 62. Picture assembly 840 is rolled into a cylinder for insertion into storage tube 64. FIG. 8C is an enlargement showing the positioning of the contents of the package form of system 800. Finally as shown in FIG. 8D, lid 814 is closed so as to close the package form of system 800. Optionally outer cover 62 comprises a groove and slot (not shown) for closing to keep system 800 closed when in package form.
  • System 800 may now be carried such as by handle 66, or may be mailed or stored. Outer cover 62 combined with storage tube 64 provide the required rigidity to protect picture assembly 840 and optional contents such as coloring materials. System 800 is preferably purchased in the package form such as where a picture 26 is sold with a frame as system 800. Optionally system 800 is sold without picture 26 as a kit for packaging and framing picture 26. System 800 is preferably sold as a kit comprising one or more pictures 26, 68 which as stated above could be designed for coloring in. It is envisaged system 800 would be sold with picture 26 rolled facing outward such that it is visible through outer cover 62. Optionally, a purchaser could purchase a picture 26 and then purchase storage tube 64 comprising flexible frame 92. Picture 26 could then be rolled around tube 64 along with outer cover 62 to protect picture 26. The purchaser could then use system 800 to frame picture 26 using frame 92.
  • In light of the above description it should therefore be appreciated that system 800 fully functions in both its packaging form to enclose and protect picture 26 for mailing, transport or storage and also in its frame form to frame picture 26. As shown, all of the components used in the package form of system 800 have been used in the frame form of system 800 and storage tube 64 and outer cover 62 are used for storage and therefore system 800 is highly ecologically efficient.
  • Reference is now made to FIGS. 9A-9E which are illustrative schematic drawings showing a picture packaging and framing system according to at least some embodiments of the present invention. As shown in FIG. 9A, picture packaging and framing system 900 comprises picture assembly 940, rigid storage tube 64 and outer cover 62. Storage tube 64 comprises cardboard, plastic or other rigid material. Outer cover 62 comprises plastic or other durable material for protecting the contents of system 900. Outer cover 62 is preferably transparent so that pictures 26 or 68 are visible through it.
  • Picture assembly 940 comprises picture 26, transparent cover sheet 20, and flexible frame 93. Cover sheet 20 is fixedly attached to frame 93 on three of its sides thus creating a transparent sheath 76 for insertion or removal of picture 26 or any other picture. Flexible frame 93 comprises a scored matrix framework that enables frame 93 to be rolled up (as shown below). Frame 93 comprises any suitable material that can be provided as the block matrix shown. Two of the opposite sides, for example 916 and 918, of frame 93 are rigid along their height such that frame 93 can only roll up in one plane. Picture assembly 940 preferably comprises adhesive 96 on its underside for adhering assembly 840 to a displaying surface such as a wall following removal of backing sheet 98.
  • System 900 comprises at least one picture 26 and optionally additional picture 68, and/or drawing materials 74 such as crayons such as where pictures 26 or 68 are to be colored in. Optionally cover sheet 20 preferably comprises plastic or other suitable transparent material as described with reference to FIG. 1A.
  • In use, picture 26 is readied for packaging as shown in FIGS. 9B-9D by laying pictures 68 onto outer cover 62 and then rolling these around storage tube 64 into a cylinder. As shown, outer cover 62 preferably has a handle 66 formed by scoring parallel cuts into outer cover 62. Picture assembly 940 is rolled into a cylinder for insertion into storage tube 64. FIG. 9C is an enlargement showing the positioning of the contents of the package form of system 900. Finally as shown in FIG. 9D, lid 914 is closed so as to close the package form of system 900. Optionally outer cover 62 comprises a groove and slot (not shown) for closing to keep system 900 closed when in package form.
  • System 900 may now be carried such as by handle 66, or may be mailed or stored. Outer cover 62 combined with storage tube 64 provide the required rigidity to protect picture assembly 940 and optional contents such as coloring materials. System 900 is preferably purchased in the package form such as where a picture 26 is sold with a frame as system 900. Optionally system 900 is sold without picture 26 as a kit for packaging picture 26. System 900 is preferably sold as a kit comprising one or more pictures 26, 68 which as stated above could be designed for coloring in. It is envisaged system 900 would be sold with picture 26 rolled facing outward such that it is visible through outer cover 62. Optionally, a purchaser could purchase a picture 26 and then purchase storage tube 64 comprising flexible frame 93. Picture 26 could then be rolled around tube 64 along with outer cover 62 to protect picture 26. The purchaser could then use system 900 to frame picture 26 using frame 93.
  • In light of the above description it should therefore be appreciated that system 900 fully functions in both its packaging form to enclose and protect picture 26 for mailing, transport or storage and also in its frame form to frame picture 26. As shown, all of the components used in the package form of system 900 have been used in the frame form of system 900 and storage tube 64 and outer cover 62 are used for storage and therefore system 900 is highly ecologically efficient.
  • Reference is now made to FIGS. 10A-10E which are illustrative schematic drawings showing a picture packaging and framing system according to at least some embodiments of the present invention. In FIG. 10A, picture packaging and framing system 1000 is shown rolled up as in a package form and carrying handle 1066 (formed in backing sheet 1012) is visible. FIG. 10B shows system 1000 partially unrolled. In FIG. 10C system 1000 is shown fully unrolled.
  • System 1000 comprises picture 26 to be packaged or framed and backing sheet 1012. Backing sheet 1012 comprises a flexible material such that backing sheet 1012 can be rolled up such as in FIG. 10A. Non-limiting examples of a material for backing sheet 1012 include cardboard, plastic or similar. The chosen material preferably has a wood veneer finish and the veneer is preferably a thin foldable veneer such as but not limited to Sanfoot® manufactured by SanFootPro of Miami, USA. Backing sheet 1012 comprises folding members 1020. As shown in FIG. 10D, folding members are folded inwards according to seams and/or perforations 1021 and are held in their final frame member positions by pressure of the members 1020 against one another. Seams 1021 guide the folding of members 1020 such that members 1020 become the framing members to frame picture 1026. The framed form of system 1000 is shown in FIG. 10E.
  • In light of the above description it should therefore be appreciated that system 1000 fully functions in both its packaging form to enclose and protect picture 26 for mailing, transport or storage and also in its frame form to frame picture 26. As shown, all of the components used in the package form of system 1000 have been used in the frame form of system 1000 and therefore system 1000 is highly ecologically efficient.
  • Reference is now made to FIGS. 11A-11E which are illustrative schematic drawings showing a picture packaging and framing system according to at least some embodiments of the present invention. As shown in FIG. 11A, picture packaging and framing system 1100 comprises backing assembly 1140, cover sheet 20, cover frame members 22 and 24, and picture 26. FIG. 11A shows the components of framing system 1100 in an unassembled form. Backing assembly 1140 and cover sheet 20 are adapted to fit picture 26 so that picture 26 can be framed in the frame form of system 1100.
  • Backing assembly 1140 comprises backing board 12 and backing frame members 1116 and 1118 which are fixedly attached to backing board 12. Frame members 1116 and 1118 are of equal length and are attached opposite one another on opposing edges of backing board 12. The fixed attachment of backing board 12 to backing frame members 16, 18 is optionally accomplished using any attachment form known in the art including but not limited to staples, adhesives, rivets, or alternatively by pressure such as where board 12 is inserted into a groove (not shown) in backing frame members 1116, 1118.
  • Frame members 1116 and 1118 are two of the four frame members that make up the assembled frame. Frame members 1116 and 1118 comprise any materials or finishes as described with reference to FIG. 1A. As described above, the fixed attachment of frame members 1116 and 1118 to backing board 12 provides multiple benefits. Frame members 1116 and 1118 are similar to frame members 16 and 18 as described with reference to FIG. 1A but are wider. Frame members 1118 and 1116 are preferably between 2-8 cm wide.
  • Backing board 12 preferably comprises materials or finishes as described with reference to FIG. 1A. Board 12 comprises fold lines 8 which are scored into board 12 for folding of board 12 as described below. Backing board 12 comprises extensions 10. Backing assembly 1140 further comprises lids 14 and lid tabs 46 which are used for closing assembly 1100 as described further below.
  • Backing board 12 optionally comprises mounting holes 28 for mounting the assembled frame form of system 1100, such as on a wall using an optionally supplied nail or screw (not shown). Backing board 12 preferably comprises carrying handles (not shown) for carrying system 1100 when in a package form.
  • Optional cover sheet 20 preferably comprises plastic or other suitable transparent material. Cover sheet 20 is preferably provided with protective backing sheets such as shown in FIG. 1A. Cover frame members 1122 and 1124 are two of the four framing members that make up the assembled frame. Cover frame members 1122, 1124 comprise materials and finishes as for cover members 22, 24 of FIG. 1A. Frame members 1122 and 1124 are similar to frame members 22 and 24 as described with reference to FIG. 1A but are wider. Frame members 1122 and 1124 are preferably between 2-8 cm wide.
  • In use, picture 26 is readied for packaging as shown in FIG. 11A by rolling picture 26 into a cylinder, and also rolling cover sheet 20 into a cylinder. Picture 26 and sheet 20 are then inserted into assembly 1140. As shown in FIG. 11C, backing assembly 1140 is folded along fold lines 8 to enclose sheet 20 and picture 26 rolled up inside. FIG. 11B shows the final packaged form of system 1100 where system 1100 has the form of a rectangular package and lids 14 are folded so as to close the package form of system 1100 with lid tabs 46 folded therein. FIG. 11C is an enlargement showing the positioning of the contents of the package form of system 1100.
  • System 1100 may now be carried or may be mailed or stored. Backing board 12 provides the required rigidity to protect picture 26 which is rolled up therein along with framing members 1116, 1118, 1122 and 1124, and transparent sheet 20. The wide framing members 1116, 1118, 1122 and 1124 also provide rigidity and protection for the packaged form of system 1100. System 1100 is preferably purchased in the package form such as where a picture 26 is sold with a frame as system 1100. Optionally system 1100 is sold without picture 26 as a kit for packaging and framing picture 26.
  • FIGS. 11D-11E show the process of assembling a framed picture once the package of FIG. 11B is opened. The package is opened and the contents extracted by reversing the steps as shown in FIGS. 11A-11C. Picture 26 is inserted into backing assembly 1140 in the same way as shown in FIGS. 1M and 1N. To insert picture 26, backing members 1116 and 1118 are tilted away from board 12 for insertion of picture 26 into slots 30. Backing members 1116 and 1118 thereinafter hold picture 26 in position by pressing the horizontal edges of picture 26 between members 1116 and 1118 and board 12. Cover sheet 20 is similarly positioned over picture 26. Frame members 1122 and 1124 are now joined with member 1116 and 1118 to complete the frame form of system 1100.
  • For joining backing frame members 1116 and 1118 with cover frame members 1122 and 1124, system 1100 comprises a joining mechanism which can be any one of the joining mechanisms as shown in FIGS. 1P-1 to 1P-7B or any other joining mechanism as known in the art.
  • In light of the above description it should therefore be appreciated that system 1100 fully functions in both its packaging form to enclose and protect picture 26 for mailing, transport or storage and also in its frame form to frame picture 26. As shown, all of the components used in the package form of system 1100 have been used in the frame form of system 1100 and therefore system 1100 is highly ecologically efficient.
  • Reference is now made to FIGS. 12A-12F which are illustrative schematic drawings showing a picture packaging and framing system according to at least some embodiments of the present invention. As shown in FIG. 12A, picture packaging and framing system 1200 comprises backing assembly 1240, cover sheet 20, and picture 26. FIG. 12A shows the components of framing system 1200 in an unassembled form. Backing assembly 1240 and cover sheet 20 are adapted to fit picture 26 so that picture 26 can be framed in the frame form of system 1200.
  • Backing assembly 1240 comprises backing board 12 and backing frame members 1216 and 1218 which are fixedly attached to backing board 12. Frame members 1216 and 1218 are of equal length and are attached opposite one another on opposing edges of backing board 12. The fixed attachment of backing board 12 to backing frame members 1216, 1218 is optionally accomplished using any attachment form known in the art including but not limited to staples, adhesives, rivets, or alternatively by pressure such as where board 12 is inserted into a groove (not shown) in backing frame members 1216, 1218.
  • Frame members 1216 and 1218 are two of the four frame members that make up the assembled frame. Frame members 1216 and 1218 comprise any materials or finishes as described with reference to FIG. 1A. As described above, the fixed attachment of frame members 1216 and 1218 to backing board 12 provides multiple benefits.
  • Backing board 12 preferably comprises materials or finishes as described with reference to FIG. 1A. Board 12 comprises fold lines 8 which are scored into board 12 for folding of board 12 as described below. Backing board 12 comprises extensions 10. Backing assembly 1240 further comprises lids 14 and lid tabs 46 which are used for closing assembly 1200 as described further below.
  • Backing board 12 optionally comprises mounting holes 28 and 43 for mounting the assembled frame form of system 1200, such as on a wall using an optionally supplied nail or screw (not shown). Backing board 12 preferably comprises carrying handles 44 for carrying system 1200 when in a package form.
  • Optional cover sheet 20 preferably comprises plastic or other suitable transparent material. Cover sheet 20 is preferably provided with protective backing sheets such as shown in FIG. 1A. Cover frame members 1222 and 1224 are two of the four framing members that make up the assembled frame. Cover frame members 1222, 1224 comprise materials and finishes as for cover members 22, 24 of FIG. 1A. In the embodiment of FIG. 12, frame members 1222 and 1224 are fixedly attached to frame members 1216 and 1218 respectively. The attachment is via joining rings 34 but could equally be provided by hinges or other form of joining mechanism that enables frame members 1222 and 1224 to swivel into position as described further below.
  • In use, picture 26 is readied for packaging as shown in FIG. 12A by rolling picture 26 into a cylinder, and also rolling cover sheet 20 into a cylinder. Picture 26 and sheet 20 are then inserted into assembly 1240 as shown in FIG. 12B. As shown in FIG. 12B, backing assembly 1240 is folded along fold lines 8 to enclose sheet 20 and picture 26 rolled up inside. FIGS. 12C and 12D shows the final packaged form of system 1200 where system 1200 has the form of a rectangular package and lids 14 are folded so as to close the package form of system 1200 with lid tabs 46 folded therein. FIG. 12C is an enlargement showing the positioning of the contents of the package form of system 1200.
  • System 1200 may now be carried or may be mailed or stored. Backing board 12 provides the required rigidity to protect picture 26 which is rolled up therein along with framing members 1216, 1218, 1222 and 1224, and transparent sheet 20. System 1200 is preferably purchased in the package form such as where a picture 26 is sold with a frame as system 1200. Optionally system 1200 is sold without picture 26 as a kit for packaging and framing picture 26.
  • FIGS. 12E-12F show the process of assembling a framed picture once the package of FIG. 12B is opened. The package is opened and the contents extracted by reversing the steps as shown in FIGS. 12A-12D. Picture 26 is inserted into backing assembly 1240 in the same way as shown in FIGS. 1M and 1N. To insert picture 26, backing members 1216 and 1218 are tilted away from board 12 for insertion of picture 26 into slots 30. Backing members 1216 and 1218 thereinafter hold picture 26 in position by pressing the horizontal edges of picture 26 between members 1216 and 1218 and board 12. Cover sheet 20 is similarly positioned over picture 26. Frame members 1222 and 1224 are now swiveled in the direction of arrows X and Y. The non-joined sides of frame members 1222 and 1224 attach to the non-joined side of members 1216 and 1218 using magnets or any other suitable joining mechanism.
  • In light of the above description it should therefore be appreciated that system 1200 fully functions in both its packaging form to enclose and protect picture 26 for mailing, transport or storage and also in its frame form to frame picture 26. As shown, all of the components used in the package form of system 1200 have been used in the frame form of system 1200 and therefore system 1200 is highly ecologically efficient.
  • It is appreciated that certain features of the invention, which are, for clarity, described in the context of separate embodiments, may also be provided in combination in a single embodiment. Conversely, various features of the invention, which are, for brevity, described in the context of a single embodiment, may also be provided separately or in any suitable sub-combination. Non-limiting examples of such features include the joining mechanisms for joining framing members, transparent cover sheets, backing sheets used to protect transparent covers sheet, handles, fold lines, scorings or perforations to guide folding, mounting holes, holding tabs and so forth which may be used in any embodiment even if not explicitly described therein.
  • Although the invention has been described in conjunction with specific embodiments thereof, it is evident that many alternatives, modifications and variations will be apparent to those skilled in the art. Accordingly, it is intended to embrace all such alternatives, modifications and variations that fall within the spirit and broad scope of the appended claims. All publications, patents and patent applications mentioned in this specification are herein incorporated in their entirety by reference into the specification, to the same extent as if each individual publication, patent or patent application was specifically and individually indicated to be incorporated herein by reference. In addition, citation or identification of any reference in this application shall not be construed as an admission that such reference is available as prior art to the present invention.

Claims (27)

What is claimed is:
1. A packaging and framing system for a picture, comprising a partially assembled frame; wherein said partially assembled frame comprises one of:
a. one fixed frame member is fixedly attached to a backing board adapted for holding said picture;
b. two opposite fixed frame members are fixedly attached to said picture; or
c. two opposite fixed frame members are fixedly attached to a backing board adapted for holding said picture.
2. The system of claim 1 further comprising completion frame members adapted for joining to said fixed frame members to complete a frame for said picture.
3. The system of claim 2 wherein said partial assembly is adapted for rolling or folding up.
4. The system of claim 3 wherein, for packaging of two opposite fixed frame members fixedly attached to a backing board adapted for holding said picture, said picture and said completion members are enclosed inside said partial assembly when said assembly is folded up.
5. The system of claim 3 further comprising a storage tube and wherein for packaging of said two opposite fixed frame members fixedly attached to a backing board adapted for holding said picture, said picture is wrapped around said tube, said partial assembly is rolled up inside said tube and said completion members are inserted into said tube.
6. The system of claim 3 further comprising a storage tube and wherein for packaging of two opposite fixed frame members fixedly attached to said picture, said partial assembly is rolled up inside said tube and said completion members are inserted into said tube.
7. The system of claim 1 wherein said adaptation for holding said picture comprises said fixed frame members are tilted away from said board for inserting said picture.
8. The system of claim 1 wherein said fixed frame members pre-tension said backing board or said picture.
9. A system for packaging and framing a picture comprising:
a. a backing assembly comprising a backing board fixedly attached to two backing frame members; and
b. two cover frame members;
wherein said backing assembly is adapted to fold up to package said picture and said cover frame members and wherein said backing assembly is adapted for unfolding and for mounting said picture therein and for joining said cover frame members thereto to frame said picture.
10. The system of claim 9 wherein said backing and cover frame members are between 1-6 cm wide.
11. The system of claim 9 wherein said joining of said cover frame members is performed using a joining mechanism selected from the group consisting of:
a. joining tabs adapted to fit into joining slots;
b. joining tabs adapted to slot into a groove;
c. dovetail joints;
d. a notch adapted to fit into a groove;
e. magnets; and
f. a combination of the above.
12. The system of claim 9 further comprising a transparent cover sheet for covering said picture.
13. The system of claim 9 wherein said backing board comprises a handle.
14. The system of claim 9 wherein said adaptation of said backing assembly for packaging comprises lids and lid tabs for closing said package.
15. The system of claim 9 wherein said adaptation for mounting said picture comprises said backing members are tilted away from said board for inserting said picture such that said picture is held between said backing members and said backing assembly.
16. The system of claim 14 wherein said backing assembly comprises a backing board and said backing members tension said backing board.
17. The system of claim 16 wherein said backing board comprises extensions and said extensions, said lids and said tabs fold to form a stand to support said system.
18. A system for packaging and framing a picture comprising:
a. a storage tube;
b. two cover frame members; and
c. one of:
i. a backing assembly comprising a backing board fixedly attached to two backing frame members; wherein, for packaging, said backing assembly is adapted to roll up for insertion into said tube, said cover frame members fit into said tube and said picture is rolled around the outside of said tube; and wherein said backing assembly is adapted to unroll for mounting said picture therein and for joining said cover frame members thereto to frame said picture; or
ii. a picture attached to two backing frame members; wherein, for packaging, said picture is adapted to roll up for insertion into said tube, and said cover frame members fit into said tube; and wherein said picture is adapted to unroll for joining said cover frame members thereto to frame said picture.
19. The system of claim 18 wherein said joining of said cover frame members is performed using a joining mechanism selected from the group consisting of:
a. joining tabs adapted to fit into joining slots;
b. joining tabs adapted to slot into a groove;
c. dovetail joints;
d. a notch adapted to fit into a groove;
e. magnets; and
f. a combination of the above.
20. The system of claim 18 further comprising a transparent cover sheet for covering said picture.
21. The system of claim 18 wherein said backing board comprises one of fold lines or a plurality of connected slats.
22. A system for packaging and framing a picture comprising:
a. a first fixed framing member fixedly attached to said picture;
b. a second fixed framing member fixedly attached to said picture; and
c. two cover framing members;
wherein said first framing member is rolled up into said picture and said picture is packaged within a triangular package formed by said second fixed framing member and said cover framing members; wherein said first and second fixed framing members and said cover framing members are adapted to join together to frame said picture.
23. A method for framing a picture comprising:
a. providing a picture packaging and framing system comprising a folded up backing board and completion frame members, wherein said backing board comprises fixedly attached frame members;
b. unfolding said backing board;
c. inserting said picture under said fixed frame members to thereby hold said picture between said fixed members and said board; and
d. joining said completion frame members to said fixed frame members to thereby frame said picture.
24. The method of claim 23 wherein, prior to unfolding, said picture and said completion frame members are enclosed in said folded up backing board.
25. A method for framing a picture comprising:
a. providing a picture packaging and framing system comprising said picture rolled up and completion frame members, wherein said picture comprises fixedly attached frame members;
b. unrolling said picture; and
c. joining said completion frame members to said fixed frame members to thereby frame said picture.
26. The method of claim 25 wherein said system further comprises a storage tube and said rolled up picture and completion frame members are packaged in said tube.
27. The method of claim 25 wherein said system comprises tension bars and said tension bars are installed on the underside of said picture to tension said picture.
