U IT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONY HURST AND FREDERIO W. SMITH, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOX-FASTENERS FOR EGG-CASES, 80C.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,788, dated March 26, 1878; application filed February 12, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that we, ANTHONY HURsT and F. W. SMITH, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in EggOase Fasteners; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of an egg-case having our improved fastening device. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the fastener detached, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same on a larger scale than in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures.
Our invention relates to an improved fast- I ening device for egg-cases, which shall hold the lid or cover of such cases securely in place, and yet admit of its being opened and removed easily, and without shaking or jarring the case or box.
The construction and operation of our invention are as hereinafter more fully shown and described.
In the drawings, A is the body-plate of the fastener, which has a slot, a, in which the catch B is pivoted detachably. The catch is forced outward from the body-plate by a small spring, 1), arranged in a recess, 0, in the plate, and prevented from coming out by being coiled around a pin or lug, d, projecting rearward from the body of the catch.
The egg-case is an ordinary square box, having at each end, near the top, abrace-piece or ledge, O. The fastener is secured at one end by screws, or in any other suitable Way, and at the other end is arranged a projecting metallic pin, D. The cover A has, at each end, a downward-projecting brace, B, clamping the ends .of the case. One of these braces is provided with a recess, 01, to accommodate the pin D, and the other, as well as the end of the cover, is slotted at 6, so as to admit the catch B of the fastener, which catches over the brace B. The catch is beveled, so as to operate readily when the cover is forced down.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of our invention will be readily understood.
To secure the cover upon the case it is only necessary to adjust it with the .pin D fitting in perforation d, and then press the end of it down, when the catch B (the upper side of which is beveled) will pass through the slot in the cover and catch over the brace B, in which position it is held by the spring I). The catch should not project beyond the upper edge of the cover, in order to protect the fastener from injury, and to make it impossible for the case to become accidentally unlocked. To remove the cover, it is only necessary to press the catch back against the tension of the spring, when it may be easily lifted off.
Egg-case fasteners, as ordinarily constructed, render it difficultto open the case without shaking or jarring it, thus often bruising and breaking a portion of the contents. Our improved fastener completely overcomes this disadvantage it is, besides, simple and cheap, and it may be operated with perfect ease by any onea desideratum of some importance, as egg-oases are frequently broken, and thus rendered worthless, in the attempt to open them.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desireto secure by Letters Patent .of the United States ANTHONY HURST. FREDERIG WILLIAM SMITH.
