10 Claims.
This invention relates to cribbage boards and similar game boards and more particularly to molded articles of this character having a plurality of cavities in one face.
Cribbage boards and other game boards of this general character having cavities for receiving counter pegs or the like closely positioned and distributed over a large area are made by forming the cavities in a panel of suitable material. The large number oi cavities distributed over the panel tends to weaken it. Consequently, it has been necessary to employ a panel having a thickness sucient to give the necessary strength. Panels of molded condensation products have been unsatisfactory because of their brittle character unless made very thick. Also, regardless of the properties of the material of which the panel was made, it had to have a thickness such that cavities could be provided therein of suincient depth to furnish adequate bearing surface to hold the pegs upright and prevent wobbling thereof.
In order to impart the maximum strength and other desirable properties to a molded condensation product, it is necessary to cure the shaped plastic by heating while in the mold or die at a prescribed temperature for a length of time depending upon the thickness of the layer of plastic through which the heat must penetrate. The cost of thick panels made by molding a condensation product has been high due to the length of time required for heating to cure.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a cribbage board or similar game board which can be produced at low cost by molding a plastic composition, such as a` condensation product.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description in conjunction with the accompanying drawing: in which,
Fig. 1 is a plan View of a molded article em bodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken upon line 2--2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the underside of one of the parts of the article; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken upon the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Before explaining in detail the present invention it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing, since the invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various Ways. Also it is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein is for the purpose o1 (c1. 27s-14s) description and not of limitation, and it is not intended to limit the invention claimed herein beyond the requirements of the prior art.
In the accompanying drawing there is illustrated a box embodying the invention comprising a body portion III and a cover portion II which may be formed by molding a plastic composition, such as a condensation product. The body portion I0 comprises a bottom I2, side walls I3 and end Walls I5. The side and end walls are provided near the bottom thereof with a rib I'I serving as an abutment for the cover portion I I. The cover portion II comprises a thin top panel I8, which serves as a Cribbage board, and side walls I9 and end Walls 20.
The thin top I8 of the cover portion is provided with a plurality o1' spaced peg receiving cavities or holes 2l distributed over the major portion of the area thereof and arranged in spaced groups or rows. The under side of the top I 8 is formed with a plurality of spaced raised portions 22 each arranged opposite one of the groups of cavities 2l, the cavities projecting into and, preferably, terminatingin the raised portions. The edge portions of the thin panel I8 are stifened and supported bythe side walls I9 and end Walls 20.
In making a cribbage board or similar game board embodying the invention by molding a condensation product, such as a phenol formaldehyde condensation product, the time required for curing can be reduced to a small fraction of the time required theretofore. The construction provided by the invention is such that there are no thick layers of plastic through which the heat must penetrate. The die or mold in which the article is produced may be provided with heated metal parts which embrace the raised portions on the under side of the game board and may be provided with heated metal parts which penetrate into the raised portions and form the cavities. Thus, the sources of heat are distributed in such a manner that the heat is required to penetrate only thin layers of the plastic. The article produced is strong and durable and possesses all the desirable characteristics of articles of this general character.
