  • This invention relates to sockets adapted for use in conjunction with incandescent lamps and constitutes a division of our application led February 26, 1934, bearing Serial No. 712,934. It has for the major object thereof to provide a combination metallic plate having secured thereto a particularly adapted spring which supports an insulating element having a suitable contact terminal integral with the electric circuit wires, whereby said plate with the elements thereupon may be quickly removedl from the supporting agent of the socket, and replace with a new similar unit when necessary for repairs or otherwise.

2 Claims;
This invention relates to sockets adapted for use in conjunction with incandescent lamps and constitutes a division of our application led February 26, 1934, bearing Serial No. 712,934. It has for the major object thereof to provide a combination metallic plate having secured thereto a particularly adapted spring which supports an insulating element having a suitable contact terminal integral with the electric circuit wires, whereby said plate with the elements thereupon may be quickly removedl from the supporting agent of the socket, and replace with a new similar unit when necessary for repairs or otherwise.
Another object of the invention is that while the primary intention thereof is for use more particularly for direction signals for motor vehicles, the same woul-d be as equally advantageous as applied to any condition requiring the use of sockets for incandescent lamps.
The invention possesses further advantages not heretofore disclosed, which will become readily apparent during the course of the following detailed description, illustrated throughout the accompanying drawing, and more fully pointed out in the appended claims.
With reference to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a partial direction signal case showing the double socket arrangement of the invention normally secured therein.
Figure 2 is a similar view to Figure 1, but showing the single socket arrangement of the invenl tion normally secured therein.
Figure 3 is a view taken directly upon line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an isometric view of the contact terminal.
Figure 5 is a view taken directly upon line 5--5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a view taken directly upon line 6--6 of Figure 1.

Figure 8 is a sectional view of the socket portion of the invention.
In the following detailed description the invention proper will be characterized by the usual reference numerals, while elements coordinated with the invention will be designated by orderly letters of the alphabet.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the invention comprises metallic plate I having both end portions deflected as at 2 and which are adapted to detachably engage similar formed slots A within partition B of signal case C respectively.
Plate I also has socket 3 formed upon the same where shown and slots 4 within said socket for the customary reception of lamp D.
For the single socket arrangement of the invention spring 5 is provided, one end of which is 5 deflected and forming thereby eyelet 6 for the passage of screw 'I therethrough, and with the usual nut and washer for said screw, the spring is rigidly secured to plate I and partition B as indicated. The opposite end of said spring is spirally formed 10 as at 8 and terminates into small coil 9, said coil being adapted to detachably engage boss I0 of insulating disc II, but firmly so that the spring will support said disc in the position as shown in Figure 2. 15
Contact terminal l2 is provided and is ixed with electric circuit wire E after the end of said Wire has passed through disc II as clearly shown in Figure 2.
For the double socket arrangement of the in- 20 vention .spring I3 is provided and is deflected and forming thereby eyelet ld for the passage of screwv I5 therethrough, and with the customary nut and Washer for said screw, the spring is rigidly secured to plate l and partition B as shown, similar to 25 spring 5, spring I3 has both ends thereof spirally formed as at I6, and each end of this formation terminating into small coil Il which is adapted to detachably engage boss I8 of insulating disc I 9, but firmly so that spring I3 will support said 30 disc in the manner as indicated in Figure 1. Contact terminals 20 and 20A are provided and are fixed with electric circuit Wires F respectively after having passed through respective discs 20 and 20A. 35
It is observed in Figures 1 and 2 that opening G is provided in signal case C so as to admit of the passage therethrough of the respective wires E and F, also insulating plates I-I as shown, being secured to said case by screws J, with the usual 40 nuts and Washers for this purpose.
The .details of construction of the complete lnvention having been duly set forth in the several preceding paragraphs, the operation and advantage thereof followz- 45 As previously stated the principal advantage of the invention is the fact that plate I may be removed from partition B by bending deflected portions 2 thereon, and by removing screw 1, which permits portions 2 of said plate to pass through 50 slots A of partition B, thereby releasing the plate and spring 5. Said plate and spring may be removed from case C through opening G Within said case after having removed insulating plate H. Of course it is understood that lamp D has 55 been removed from socket 3 previous to the removal of plate l and spring 5.
The original plate i may be retained for reassembling to partition B even though now elements are used such as spring 5, disc il and terminal i2, and it is understood that portions 2 of said plate are again bent so as to hold the plate rigidly secured to said partition as indicated in Figure 2.
It is further understood that if plate l is secured to any surface other than to partition B, the operation of removing the same with coordinate elements would be simplified in that it would not be necessary for removal of the elements mentioned from case C.
With particular reference 'to Figure l it is observed that plate iA is'similar to plate l, only that double sockets are formed therein similar to socket 3, for the accommodation of two lamps in the place of the single lamp D in Figure 2, however plate !A is removed from or reassembled to partition B the same manner as plate I.
In Figure l it is also observed that contact terminal 28A is of somewhat larger proportion than terminal 26. The purpose of this is to disclose a modified form of terminal 2G so as to accommodate doubie contact lamp dd as indicated.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is:
1. In a lamp housing, a lamp supporting socket member, a spring arm xed at one end in the housing, the free end of the spring arm terminating in a flat coil disposed adjacent to the central contact of a lamp mounted in the socket member, a conductor extending axially through the coil, a contact head on the end of the conductor and held in engagement with the central contact of the lamp by said spring arm, and an insulating disc interposed between the coil and the contact head, said disc having a boss thereon fitted through the center of the coil and through which the conductor passes.
2. In a lamp housing, a stationary vertically disposed plate having a lamp receiving opening, a second plate disposed in parallel abutting relation with respect to the stationary plate, oiset tongues formed on the ends of the second plate, the stationary plate being formed with slots to accommodate said offset tongues, a bolt extending through both plates to additionally secure the same together, a lamp socket carried by the second plate positioned in alinement with the lamp receiving opening in the stationary plate, a lamp removably secured in said socket through the opening in the stationary plate, a spring arm attached one end to said bolt, the free end of said spring arm terminating in a lat coil disposed adjacent to the central Contact of the lamp, a conductor extending axially through the coil, a
contact head on the end of the conductor and held in engagement with the central contact of the lamp by said spring arm, ,and an insulating disc interposed between the coil and the Contact head, said disc having a boss thereon tted through the center of the con and 4through which 30 the conductor passes.
