Abstract
An intelligent boring tool has a cylindrical body further comprised of a head mount and a body. The body has a plurality of push out members wherein each push out member is located inside a porthole. Each push out member is further comprised of a grinding plate and an O ring. A choke ring used for restricting the flow of outgoing water. A threaded adapter member to connect a length of pipe onto the head mount. Bottom threads located at a base portion of the body to allow for the connection of a drilling accessory. The head mount is further comprised of water holes lined up with the portholes to let water push on the push out members.
Description
- The present invention relates generally to soil drilling but more particularly to an intelligent boring tool.
- When drilling in soft terrain, there is always the risk that the soil will collapse inward and partially or completely fill in the bored passage. In some cases, the jamming is so severe that drill pipes have to be forsaken underground. Quite often, a bore hole will start in soft terrain and then hit harder rocks where the risk of collapse is not an issue. Ideally, such situations require two types of bore drill bits which means that the drill pipes have to be raised so as to bring the drill bit out of the hole, removed so as to install a different drill bit and then start the process again to bring the drill bit back down the hole until it reaches hard rock and resume the drilling. There exist drill bit adapter having movable cutters that can be adjusted to increase the bore hole diameter by way of reaming but the cutters cannot be adjusted “on the fly” but rather once before insertion into the bore hole. There has to be a way to eliminate that switching of the drill bits.
- In view of the foregoing disadvantages inherent in the known devices now present in the prior art, the present invention, which will be described subsequently in greater detail, is to provide objects and advantages which are:
- To provide for a versatile drill bit that is adaptable to both soft and hard soils.
- It is another advantage of this invention to provide for a versatile drill bit which allows for the insertion of a sleeve within a pipe which allows for the extraction of a drill core.
- In order to do so, the invention comprises a cylindrical body further comprised of a head mount and a body. The body has a plurality of push out members wherein each push out member is located inside a porthole. Each push out member is further comprised of a grinding plate and an O ring. A choke ring used for restricting the flow of outgoing water. A threaded adapter member to connect a length of pipe onto the head mount. Bottom threads located at a base portion of the body to allow for the connection of a drilling accessory. The head mount is further comprised of water holes lined up with the portholes to let water push on the push out members.
- The push out member is further comprised of winglets.
- The “O” ring is inserted in a groove which surrounds the grinding plate.
- A plurality of diamond grit plates located below the push out members are used for reaming a drilling hole.
- The head mount is further comprised of male threads to thread female threads located on the body.
- There are 3 grinding plates and 3 diamond grit plates.
- There has thus been outlined, rather broadly, the more important features of the invention in order that the detailed description thereof that follows may be better understood, and in order that the present contribution to the art may be better appreciated. There are additional features of the invention that will be described hereinafter and which will form the subject matter of the claims appended hereto.
- In this respect, before explaining at least one embodiment of the invention in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and to the arrangements of the components set forth in the following description or illustrated in the drawings. The invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced and carried out in various ways. Also, it is to be understood that the phraseology and terminology employed herein are for the purpose of description and should not be regarded as limiting.
- As such, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the conception, upon which this disclosure is based, may readily be utilized as a basis for the designing of other structures, methods and systems for carrying out the several purposes of the present invention. It is important, therefore, that the claims be regarded as including such equivalent constructions insofar as they do not depart from the spirit and scope of the present invention.
- These together with other objects of the invention, along with the various features of novelty which characterize the invention, are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this disclosure. For a better understanding of the invention, its operating advantages and the specific objects attained by its uses, reference should be made to the accompanying drawings and descriptive matter which contains illustrated preferred embodiments of the invention.

FIG. 6 Exploded view of the components. - An Intelligent boring tool (10) has a cylindrical body (11) comprised of a triad of grinding plates (14); a choke ring (16) to restrict the flow of outgoing water and a threaded adapter member (18) to connect a length of pipe (26) thereto. A plurality of diamond grit plates (17) reams the drilling hole before the grinding plates (14) so as to reduce wear on the latter. Bottom threads (32) at the base of the body (11) allow for the connection of a drill bit or auger (not shown).
- Each grinding plate (14) is pushed outwardly by a corresponding push out member (20) which receives the water pressure and is pushed outwardly against the grinding plate (14). Doing so, increases the drilling diameter. The push out member (20) is configured and sized to fit inside portholes (24) located around the periphery of the boring tool (10) and has winglets (25) that encompass the porthole (24) so that it is not ejected from the porthole (24). Additionally, an “O” ring (15) inserted in a groove (17) surrounds each grinding plate (14) so as to create a better seal between the periphery of the porthole (24) and the grinding plate (14) which reduces water leakage.
- The injection of water inside boring drill bits is a normal process of drilling so as to cool off the drill bit. But, by adding a choke ring (16) and the “O” rings (15), the flow of water exiting the boring tool (10) is restricted, which has for effect of creating enough of a pressure buildup to push the push out member (20) outwardly when the boring tool (10) is drilling in soft soil, but not enough when it is in hard soil, such as rock, for example.
- As shown in
FIG. 5 , water comes down and passes inside the cylindrical body (11) and around the sleeve (30), pushing the grinding plate (14) outwardly, then filling up the hole as some of it leaks out from the bottom. - Other components include a head mount (32) which has male threads (33) to thread female threads (34) located on the body (11). Water holes (36) line up with the portholes (24) to let water push on the push out members (20).
- Another advantage is that several sleeves (30) are inserted down into the pipes (26) and into the boring tool (10) to contain a drilled core (28). The sleeves (30) can be pulled out of the pipes (26) so as to retrieve the core (28). Typically, at every pipe (26) length of digging, drilling is stopped and the sleeves (30) are pulled out to collect the core (28). The sleeves (30) are then reinserted down, and the drilling continues for another pipe (26) length. Because bore tools of the prior art have mechanical parts inside them to vary their diameters, it is impossible to insert sleeves (30) and thus do both operations at the same time.
- With respect to the above description then, it is to be realized that the optimum dimensional relationships for the parts of the invention, to include variations in size, materials, shape, form, function and manner of operation, assembly and use, are deemed readily apparent and obvious to one skilled in the art, and all equivalent relationships to those illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification are intended to be encompassed by the present invention.
- Therefore, the foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention.
Claims (7)
1. An Intelligent boring tool comprising a cylindrical body further comprised of a head mount and a body; the body having a plurality of push out members wherein each the push out member is located inside a porthole; each the push out member is further comprised of a grinding plate and an O ring; a choke ring to restrict the flow of outgoing water and a threaded adapter member to connect a length of pipe onto the head mount; bottom threads located at a base portion of the body to allow for the connection of a drilling accessory; the head mount is further comprised water holes lined up with the portholes to let water push on the push out members.
2. The Intelligent boring tool of claim 1 wherein the push out member is further comprised of winglets.
3. The Intelligent boring tool of claim 1 wherein the “O” ring is inserted in a groove which surrounds the grinding plate.
4. The Intelligent boring tool of claim 1 wherein a plurality of diamond grit plates located below the push out members are used for reaming a drilling hole.
5. The Intelligent boring tool of claim 1 wherein the head mount is further comprised of male threads to thread female threads located on the body.
6. The Intelligent boring tool of claim 1 wherein there are 3 grinding plates
7. The Intelligent boring tool of claim 4 wherein there are 3 diamond grit plates.
