- The present invention relates to a locking arrangement for a locking two panels of a carton together to a carton and a blank and a method of securing a carton blank about a product, more specifically, but not exclusively to a locking arrangement having multiple locking positions.
- In the field of packaging it is often required to provide consumers with a package comprising multiple primary product containers, such multi-packs are desirable for shipping and distribution and for display of promotional information. For cost and environmental considerations, such cartons or carriers need to be formed from as little material as possible and cause as little wastage in the materials from which they are formed as possible. Another consideration is the strength of the packaging and its suitability for holding and transporting large weights of articles.
- It is desirable to lock a pair of panels forming a package about the primary product containers; in particular it is desirable to ensure a tight fit of the carton, such as but not limited to a wraparound style carton, about the primary product container or containers.
- The present invention seeks to overcome or at least mitigate the problems of the prior art.
- According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a locking arrangement for securing together a pair of panels, the arrangement comprising locking tabs projecting from an end edge of a first panel of the pair of panels and locking slits provided adjacent an end edge of the second panel of the pair of panels, wherein a locking slit is provided for receiving each of the respective locking tabs, the locking tabs and the locking slits being engageable by relative sliding movement therebetween, wherein at least one of the locking tabs or locking slits is configured to secure the pair of panels in a first overlapping position and at least one of the other the locking tabs or locking slits is configured to secure the pair of panels in a second overlapping position.
- Optionally, the locking arrangement comprises at least one further locking tab or locking slit configured to secure the pair of panels in at least one further position having another degree of overlap.
- Optionally, the second degree of overlap when the first and second panels are disposed in the second position is greater than the first degree of overlap when the first and second panels are disposed in the first position.
- Optionally, at least one of locking tabs shares a common cutline with at least one adjacent locking tab.
- Optionally, the locking arrangement comprises a first group of locking tabs.
- Preferably, each of the locking tabs in the first group sharing a common cutline with at least one adjacent locking tab in the first group.
- Optionally, the locking arrangement comprises a second group of locking tabs.
- Preferably, each of the locking tabs in the second group sharing a common cutline with at least one adjacent locking tab in the second group.
- Optionally, the locking tabs in the first group of locking tabs are spaced apart from the locking tabs in the second group of locking tabs.
- Alternatively, one of the locking tabs in the first group of locking tabs is spaced apart from one of the locking tabs in the second group of locking tabs.
- Optionally, the spacing between a locking tab in the first group of locking tabs and an adjacent locking tab in the second group of locking tabs is greater than the spacing between a pair of adjacent locking tabs forming part of either of the first or second groups.
- In some embodiments an aperture is disposed between a pair or adjacent locking tabs which share a common cutline, the aperture being struck in part from the first panel and defining in part a recess in the edge of the first panel such that the edge of the first panel defined by the recess is inset from a leading edge of the first panel.
- Preferably, the at least a first one of the locking tabs comprises an engaging edge spaced from the free end edge of the first panel by a first distance.
- Preferably, the at least a second one of the locking tabs comprises an engaging edge spaced from the free end edge of the first panel by a second distance, the second distance being greater than the first distance.
- Optionally, the engaging edge is a trailing edge of the locking tab.
- Optionally, the at least a first one of the locking slits is spaced apart from the end edge of the second panel by a first distance.
- Optionally, the at least a second one of the locking slits is spaced apart from the end edge of the second panel by a second distance, the second distance being greater than the first distance.
- Optionally, the at least a first one of the locking slits comprises an abutment edge spaced from the free end edge of the second panel by a first distance.
- Optionally, the at least a second one of the locking slots comprises an abutment edge spaced from the free end edge of the second panel by a second distance, the second distance being greater than the first distance.
- Optionally, the abutment edge is a defined by the locking slit.
- Optionally, the locking tabs are each coupled to the first panel by a fold line for allowing the locking tabs to fold with respect to the first panel.
- Optionally, at least one first fold line coupling at least one first locking tab is disposed at first distance with respect to an end edge of the first panel and at least one second fold line coupling at least one second locking tab is disposed at second distance with respect to an end edge of the first panel, the second distance being greater than the first distance.
- Preferably, the at least a first one of the locking tabs projects from the end edge of the first panel by a first dimension.
- Optionally, the at least a second one of the locking tabs projects from the end edge of the first panel by a second dimension, the second dimension being greater than the first dimension.
- According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a blank for forming a carton comprising a plurality of panels for forming a top panel base panel and opposing side walls interconnecting the top and base panels, wherein one of the plurality of panels is a composite panel comprising a first panel and a second panel, the blank comprising a locking arrangement, the arrangement comprising locking tabs projecting from an end edge of the first panel and locking slits provided adjacent an end edge of the second panel, wherein a locking slit is provided for receiving each of the respective locking tabs, the locking tabs and the locking slits being engageable by relative sliding movement therebetween, wherein at least one of the locking tabs or locking slits is configured to secure the first and second panels in a first overlapping position and at least one of the other the locking tabs or locking slits is configured to secure the first and second panels in a second overlapping position.
- According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided a carton comprising a plurality of panels including a top panel, a base panel and opposing side walls interconnecting the top and base panels, wherein one of the plurality of panels is a composite panel comprising a first panel and a second panel, the carton comprising a locking arrangement, the arrangement comprising locking tabs projecting from an end edge of the first panel and locking slits provided adjacent an end edge of the second panel, wherein a locking slit is provided for receiving each of the respective locking tabs, the locking tabs and the locking slits being engageable by relative sliding movement therebetween, wherein at least one of the locking tabs or locking slits is configured to secure the first and second panels in a first overlapping position and at least one of the other the locking tabs or locking slits is configured to secure the first and second panels in a second overlapping position.
- Optionally, the degree of overlap when the first and second panels are disposed in the second position is greater than the degree of overlap when the first and second panels are disposed in the first position, such that the carton has a smaller internal volume in the second position.
- According to a fourth aspect of the present invention there is provided a locking arrangement for securing together a pair of panels, the pair of panels comprising a first panel and a second panel, the arrangement comprising at least one first locking tab projecting from an end edge of the first panel, at least one second locking tab projecting from an end edge of the first panel and at least one first locking slit provided adjacent an end edge of the second panel for receiving the at least one first locking tab and at least one second locking slit provided adjacent an end edge of the second panel for receiving the at least one first locking tab, wherein the at least one first locking tab and the at least one first locking slit are configured to secure the first and second panels in a first overlapping position and at least one second locking tab and at least one second locking slit are configured to secure the first and second panels in a second overlapping position.
- According to a fifth aspect of the present invention there is provided a method for securing together a pair of panels, the pair of panels comprising a first panel and a second panel and including locking arrangement comprising at least one first locking tab projecting from an end edge of the first panel, at least one second locking tab projecting from an end edge of the first panel and at least one first locking slit provided adjacent an end edge of the second panel for receiving the at least one first locking tab and at least one second locking slit provided adjacent an end edge of the second panel for receiving the at least one first locking tab, wherein the at least one first locking tab and the at least one first locking slit are configured to secure the first and second panels in a first overlapping position and at least one second locking tab and at least one second locking slit are configured to secure the first and second panels in a second overlapping position, the method comprising;

- determining whether to secure the pair of panels in the first or second overlapping position,
- sliding the pair of panels with respect to one another so as to engage the at least one first locking tab with the at least one first locking slit so as to engage the pair of panels in the first overlapping position, and
- when securing the pair of panels in the second overlapping position, further sliding the pair of panels with respect to one another so as to engage the at least one second locking tab with the at least one second locking slit so as to engage the pair of panels in the second overlapping position.
- According to a sixth aspect of the present invention there is provided a carton for packaging one or more articles, the carton comprising a plurality of panels including a top panel, a base panel and opposing side walls interconnecting the top and base panels, wherein one of the plurality of panels is a composite panel comprising a first panel and a second panel, the carton comprising a locking arrangement, the arrangement comprising locking tabs projecting from an end edge of the first panel and locking slits provided adjacent an end edge of the second panel, wherein a locking slit is provided for receiving each of the respective locking tabs, the locking tabs and the locking slits being engageable by relative sliding movement therebetween, wherein a portion of at least one of the locking tabs shares a common cutline or weakened line of severance with a portion of at least one adjacent locking tab when the carton is in a blank form.
- Preferably, the portion of the at least one of the locking tabs is complementary in shape to the portion of the at least one adjacent locking tab. This gives the at least one of the locking tabs the appearance of being struck from, or interrupted by, a portion of the at least one adjacent locking tab.
- Within the scope of this application it is envisaged that the various aspects, embodiments, examples, features and alternatives set out in the preceding paragraphs, in the claims and/or in the following description and drawings may be taken independently or in any combination thereof. For example, features described in connection with one embodiment are applicable to all embodiments unless there is incompatibility of features.

As used herein, the word “exemplary” is used expansively to refer to embodiments that serve as illustrations, specimens, models, or patterns. Indeed, it will be understood that the packages, blanks and cartons described herein may be embodied in various and alternative forms. - Well-known components, materials or methods are not necessarily described in great detail in order to avoid obscuring the present disclosure. Any specific structural and functional details disclosed herein are not to be interpreted as limiting, but merely as a basis for the claims and as a representative basis for teaching one skilled in the art to variously employ the invention.
- Referring to
FIG. 1 there is shown a plan view from above of a blank 10 capable of forming a carton for packaging one or more primary products, such as, but not limited to, bottles or cans, hereinafter referred to as articles. - In the embodiments detailed herein, the terms carton and carrier refer, for the non-limiting purpose of illustrating the various features of the invention, to a container for engaging, carrying, and/or dispensing articles, such as bottles. However, it is contemplated that the teachings of the invention can be applied to various containers, which may or may not be tapered and/or cylindrical. Other exemplary articles include bottles (for example metallic, glass or plastics bottles), cans (for example aluminium cans), tins, pouches, packets and the like.
- The blank is formed from a sheet of suitable substrate. It is to be understood that, as used herein, the term “suitable substrate” includes all manner of foldable sheet material such as paperboard, corrugated board, cardboard, plastic, combinations thereof, and the like. It should be recognized that one or other numbers of blanks may be employed, for example, to provide the carrier structure described in more detail below.
- In the exemplary embodiment, the blank is configured to form a carton or carrier for packaging an exemplary arrangement of exemplary articles. For example, the arrangement is a matrix including rows and columns such as a 2×2 arrangement of articles. The blank can be alternatively configured to form a carrier for packaging other articles and/or different arrangements of articles.

Blank 10 comprises a means for locking the first andsecond base panels locking mechanism 70 comprises a male M portion and a female portion F forming a first part of acomplimentary locking mechanism 70 and second part of acomplimentary locking mechanism 70. - Referring now to
FIGS. 1 to 3 the first part M of thecomplimentary locking mechanism 70 comprises amale locking tab 54/54 a, 56/56 a, 58/58 a which is coupled to thefirst base panel 12 alongfold lines male locking tabs 54/54 a, 56/56 a, 58/58 a project outwardly, in the plane of thefirst base panel 12, from theend edge 16 thereof. Themale locking tab 54/54 a, 56/56 a, 58/58 a comprises amain portion integral anchoring tab main portion fold line end edge 16 offirst base panel 12. The trailing edge 66 of the anchoring tab is spaced fromend edge 16 and, in use, provides a locking edge for cooperation with an abutment edge defined by a locking slit insecond base panel 28. In alternative embodiments themain portion foldable anchoring tab male locking tab 54/54 a, 56/56 a, 58/58 a in a locking slit ofsecond base panel 28. -
Second base panel 28 includes a locking slit 50 a, 50 b, 50 c in the form of a shallow “Y” which is struck fromsecond base panel 28 along afold line 52 extending parallel to the end edge 11 ofsecond base panel 28. Thus,second base panel 28 has a foldable front edge strip or hingepanel 28 a. Theslit hinge panel 28 a towards the end edge of thesecond base panel 28 at an acute angle with respect to foldline 52; a return part extending back to meetfold line 52 at an acute angle with respect thereto; and an leg part extending substantially perpendicularly to foldline 52 from the vertex between the first part and the return part. When front edge strip 32 is folded out of the plane of the blank theslit fold line 52. - The upright leg portion of the “Y” shaped cut allows the material forming the hinged
panel 28 a above the aperture created by folding thehinge panel 28 a to flex or bend when inserting themale locking tabs 54/54 a, 56/56 a, 58/58 a. - In order to lock together first and
second base panels tabs fold lines main portion hinge panel 28 a is folded aboutfold line 52 out of the plane of the blank (FIG. 2 ) to open theslits tabs main portions fold line male locking tab 54/54 a, 56/56 a, 58/58 a is sized so that themale locking tab 54/54 a, 56/56 a, 58/58 a can be slidingly engaged in a respective one of the locking slits 50 a, 50 b, 50 c. The lockingtabs 54/54 a, 56/56 a, 58/58 a may be an interference fit in the locking slits 50 a, 50 b, 50 c. Hence, lockingtabs 54/54 a, 56/56 a, 58/58 a can be inserted into the locking slits 50 a, 50 b, 50 c until the trailing edge 66 of the anchoringtabs anchoring tabs adjacent fold line second base panels second base panels tabs 54/54 a, 56/56 a, 58/58 a into theslits - In some circumstances, such as when the
panels panels hinge panel 28 a ofpanel 28 and the anchoringtabs panels adjacent fold lines main portions tabs locking tab 54/54 a, 56/56 a, 58/58 a from the locking slits 50 a, 50 b, 50 c. It will be appreciated that in this locking configuration, the trailing edge 66 lies substantially parallel to the abutment edge 68 to enhance the engagement between the panels. -
Central locking tab 56/56 a which is disposed between lockingtabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a is configured to provide a tighter locking position than theouter locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a. In which the degree of overlap of thefirst base panel 12 with thesecond base panel 28 is greater than which is achieved by engaging theouter locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a. This is achieved by offsetting the abutment edge 66 of thelocking tab 56/56 a from the abutment edges of theouter locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a. The abutment edge 66 of thelocking tab 56/56 a is disposed in closer proximity to theedge 64 offirst base panel 12 than the abutment edges 66 of theouter locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a; the abutment edge 66 of thelocking tab 56/56 a is offset by a distance O from the abutment edges 66 of theouter locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a. Theouter locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a extends from theedge 64 offirst base panel 12 by a first dimension L1. Thecentral locking tab 56/56 a extends from theedge 64 offirst base panel 12 by a second dimension L2. The first dimension L1 is greater than the second dimension L2. The staggered or offset arrangement of the leading edges of the lockingtabs 54/54 a, 56/56 a, 58/58 a provides that only theouter locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a need to be aligned simultaneously, thereby simplifying assembly of thecarton 90. Alignment of thecentral locking tab 56/56 a with its respective locking slit 50 b is aided or facilitated by the offset arrangement of the leading edges of the lockingtabs 54/54 a, 56/56 a, 58/58 a, since thecentral locking tab 56/56 a is constrained once theouter locking tabs 54/54 a, 56/56 a, 58/58 a have been inserted into their respective locking slits 50 a, 50 c. - In the illustrated embodiment the
male locking tabs 54/54 a, 56/56 a, 58/58 a are coupled to thefirst base panel 12 by arespective fold line - Optionally, the
fold line 57 coupling thelocking tab 56/56 a to thefirst base panel 12 is offset from the fold lines 55, 59 coupling theouter locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a to thefirst base panel 12. Thefold line 57 is disposed in closer proximity to, preferably co-linear with, theedge 64 offirst base panel 12 than the fold lines 55, 59 of theouter locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a. Theouter locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a are coupled to a small projection extending from thefirst base panel 12 in this way the leading edge of theouter locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a is disposed further from the free end edge of thefirst base panel 12 than the leading edge of thecentral locking tab 56/56 a, theouter locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a are thereby brought into contact with thesecond base panel 228 and hingepanel 228 a before thecentral locking tab 56/56 a. - In this way when bringing the
first base panel 212 andsecond base panel 228 together theouter locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a may contact thehinge panel 228 a and slide over thehinge panel 228 a until theouter locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a contact the projection 49 a to align theouter locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a with the outer locking slits 50 a, 50 c. - Turning to the construction of the
carton 90 as illustrated inFIGS. 4A and 4B , it is envisaged that thecarton 90 can be formed by a series of sequential folding operations in a straight line machine so that thecarton 90 is not required to be rotated or inverted to complete its construction. The folding process is not limited to that described below and may be altered according to particular manufacturing requirements. - The
carton 90 is formed by wrapping the blank 110 about one or more articles (not shown). Thetop panel 20 is disposed over a group of articles, the topend closure panels anchor panel abut fold line anchor panel end closure panels web panels upper side panels lower side panels second bevel panels second base panel 12, 28) aboutfold lines anchor panels upper side panel end closure panels - The first and
second bevel panels fold line second base panels complimentary locking mechanisms 70 are employed as described above to lock thefirst base panel 12 andsecond panel 28 together. The first andsecond base panels FIG. 4A , in which theouter locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a are fully engaged or fully inserted with the locking slits 50 a, 50 c or a second overlapping position, as shown inFIG. 4B , in which all lockingtabs 54/54 a, 56/56 a, 58/58 a are fully engaged or fully inserted with the locking slits 50 a, 50 b, 50 c depending upon the dimensions of the article group being packaged and/or the tightness of the carton about the group of articles required. - In the first position as illustrated in
FIG. 4A thecentral locking tab 56/56 a is maintained in a folded condition, such that theanchor tab 56 a is substantially in face contacting relationship withmain portion 56 of thecentral locking tab 56/56 a. Theanchor tabs outer locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a have passed through the respective locking slit 50 a, 50 c and have partially unfolded, due to the inherent resilience of the material of the blank 10, such theanchor tabs hinge panel 28 a. - The
carton 90 in the first position or assembly configuration, as shown inFIG. 4A , comprises acomposite base panel 12/28 formed from the first andsecond base panels composite base panel 12/28 has width dimension W1 defined between thefirst bevel panel 14 and thesecond bevel panel 26. Thecarton 90 in the second position or assembly configuration, as shown inFIG. 4B , comprises acomposite base panel 12/28 formed from the first andsecond base panels composite base panel 12/28 has width dimension W2 defined between thefirst bevel panel 14 and thesecond bevel panel 26. The width dimension W2 is less than the width dimension W1 such that the firstsecond bevel panel 14 is disposed closer to thesecond bevel panel 26 in the second position than in the first position. - In the second position the degree of overlap of the
first base panel 12 with thesecond base panel 28 is greater than the degree of overlap of thefirst base panel 12 with thesecond base panel 28 when disposed in the first position. - In the second position the
anchor tab 56 a of thecentral locking tab 56/56 a in addition to theanchor tabs outer locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a have passed through the respective locking slit 50 a, 50 b, 50 c and have partially unfolded, due to the inherent resilience of the material of the blank 10, such theanchor tabs hinge panel 28 a. - In the first position trailing edge 66 of each of the
outer locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a is in abutment with abutment edge 68 of thehinge panel 28 a. Thehinge panel 28 a prevents theanchor tab 56 a from unfolding since thehinge panel 28 a is disposed over theanchor tab 56 a of thelocking tab 56/56 a. - In the second position trailing edge 66 of the
central locking tab 56/56 a is in abutment with abutment edge 68 of thehinge panel 28 a. Theanchor tabs outer locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a may be spaced apart from the abutment edge 68 of thehinge panel 28 a. Theouter locking tabs 54/54 a, 58/58 a each serve to stabilise the interlocking arrangement of the first andsecond base panels - Referring now to
FIGS. 5 to 11 , there is shown alternative embodiments of the present invention. In the second, third, fourth and fifth illustrated embodiments, like numerals have, where possible, been used to denote like parts, albeit with the addition of the prefix “100”, “200”, “300” or “400” to indicate that these features belong to the second, third, fourth or fifth embodiment. The alternative embodiments share many common features with the first embodiment and therefore only the differences from the embodiment illustrated inFIGS. 1 to 4 will be described in any greater detail. -
FIG. 5 illustrates a blank 110 for forming a carton according to a second embodiment, blank 110 comprises four apertures A1 struck at least in part from thetop panel 120. Two of the apertures interrupt thefold line 121 between thetop panel 120 and the secondupper side panel 122. Apertures A1 may each receive a portion of a respective article such as a neck portion or upper portion. - The blank 110 comprises four complimentary locking mechanisms and include four
male locking tabs slits male locking tabs male locking tabs tab 154 is shaped to be complimentary to an edge portion of the main portion of theadjacent locking tab 156, anchor tab of lockingtab 156 is shaped to be complimentary to an edge portion of the main portion of theadjacent locking tab 158, anchor tab of lockingtab 158 is shaped to be complimentary to an edge portion of the main portion of theadjacent locking tab 160. It will be appreciated that eachmale locking tabs male locking tabs - The locking slits 150 a, 150 b, 150 c, 150 d are arranged in a linear series and interrupt the
fold line 152 coupling thehinge panel 128 a to thesecond base panel 28. The central pair of lockingslits fold line 127 between thesecond base panel 128 and thesecond bevel panel 126 than the locking slits 150 a, 150 d at each end of the linear series. Each of the central pair of lockingslits second base panel 128 and the endmost locking slits 150 a, 150 d are disposed at a second distance y from the free end edge of thesecond base panel 128; the second distance y is less than the first distance x. -
Blank 110 comprises threeapertures first aperture 155 is disposed betweenfirst locking tab 154 andsecond locking tab 156,second aperture 157 is disposed betweensecond locking tab 156 andthird locking tab 158, andthird aperture 159 is disposed betweenthird locking tab 158 andfourth locking tab 160. Each of the first, second andthird apertures first base panel 112 such that a portion of the edge of the first base panel defined by each of the first, second andthird apertures male locking tabs first base panel 112. - When the
hinge panel 128 a is folded about thefold line 152 the offset O between the central pair of locking slits and the endmost locking slits places the endmost locking slits 150 a, 150 d in closer proximity to thefold line 127 between thesecond base panel 128 and thesecond bevel panel 126 than the central pair of lockingslits - The blank 110 can be formed into a carton which comprises two locking positions:

FIGS. 6 to 10 there is shown a blank 210 for forming a carton according to a third embodiment.Blank 210 comprises an alternative locking mechanism, which includes amale locking member -
Blank 210 comprises three complementary locking devices.Blank 210 comprises a first part F of a complementary locking device and a second part M of a complementary locking device. - First part F comprises a
flap 228 a hingedly connected to afirst panel 228 byfold line 252,first panel 228 forms a second base panel of a carton. - Fold
line 252 is interrupted by a cut lines or weakened lines ofseverance lines fold line 252. In the illustrated embodiment the cut lines 250 a, 250 b, 250 c are disposed or located withinflap 228 a, such that each defines in part afirst projection first projections first panel 228. - Cut
lines first projections outer portions cutline 250 a and is disposed closer to foldline 252 than the first tier. Theouter portions fold line 252 and with respect to the first tier; the outer edges of theouter portions cutline 250 a defining the second tier being disposed closer to thefold line 252 than the inner edges of theouter portions - The portion of the cut lines 250 a, 250 b, 250 c defining the first tier define a recess or aperture A2 in
flap 228 a in a folded condition, which recess or aperture A2 is arranged to receive a portion of the second part M of the complementary locking mechanism. - The second part M comprises a
foldable tab second panel 212, which forms a first base panel of a carton. Thefold line tab tabs foldable tabs foldable tab respective fold lines tongue 292 a disposed centrally within thetab 280 a.Tongue 292 a is sized and arranged to be received in the recess or aperture A2. - Outer portions define in part the second tier of the
foldable tab 280 a, each outer portion having anengaging edge fold line 282 a than the first tier. - The second tier forms shoulders on either side of the
central tongue 292 a. - Preferably, in the folded state, the
tab 280 a overlaps with thesecond panel 212 by a distance Z, as illustrated inFIG. 7 ; the distance Z is sufficiently large thattab 280 a cannot pass entirely through the aperture A2, even when theflap 228 a is coplanar with thefirst panel 228. - Turning to the assembly of the complementary locking devices as illustrated in
FIGS. 7 to 10 , it is envisaged that the complementary locking devices can be formed by a series of sequential folding operations in a straight line machine so that the carton is not required to be rotated or inverted to complete its construction. The folding process is not limited to that described below and may be altered according to particular manufacturing requirements. -
FIG. 7 illustrates a stage of assembly of the complementary locking devices. Theflap 228 a has been folded aboutfold line 252. Theflap 228 a is illustrated folded to be perpendicular tofirst panel 228. In other embodiments theflap 228 a may be folded through an angle less than 90 degrees, or may be allowed to at least partially unfold (seeFIG. 8 ), so as to define an obtuse angle betweenflap 228 a andfirst panel 228. In folding theflap 228 a, an aperture A2 has been created between theflap 228 a and thefirst panel 228. -
Foldable tabs fold lines second panel 212. - The first and
second panels tabs FIG. 9 thetab 280 a, in a folded condition, at least partially passes through the aperture A2. Thetab 280 a engages with the aperture A2 created by folding theflap 228 a. Thetongue 292 a engages with anupper edge 291 a of the aperture A;upper edge 291 a defines at least in part the recess in which thetongue 292 a is received. In this way theupper edge 291 a restricts thetab 280 a from unfolding. The engagingedges tab 280 a engage with theflap 228 a at locations disposed adjacent to the recess. - In the illustrated embodiment of
FIG. 8 , theflap 228 a has unfolded, at least partially, aboutfold line 252, so as to define an obtuse angle between theflap 228 a and thefirst panel 228 a. Similarly, thetab 280 a has partially unfolded aboutfold line 282 a. -
Tongue 292 a oftab 280 a is received in the recess. -
Shoulder portions flap 228 a disposed on either side of the recess and defined in part bycut lines tabs flap 228 a. -
Tab 284 a engages withfirst panel 228 limiting unfolding offoldable tab 280 a. - It will also be appreciated that
tab 280 a in the folded condition is tapered so that it is narrower in width towards the leading edge. This assists in aligning thetab 280 a with the aperture A2, since the leading edge is smaller in dimension than the aperture A2. - It will also be understood that if the
tab 280 a is inserted entirely through aperture A2 inadvertently, then the first andsecond panels tab arcuate tab first panel 228 preventing unfolding. -
FIG. 9 illustrates the first andsecond panels projection 289 a at least partially overlaps withsecond panel 212; theprojection 289 a being disposed outermost. This overlapping relationship is optional, but when provided increases security by preventing or reducing folding offirst panel 228 aboutfold line 252, thereby helping to maintain first andsecond panels - The blank 210 provides two locking positions:

- a first locking position in which the endmost
male locking tabs slits foldable tab 280 b of the centralmale locking tab 280 b is maintained in a folded relationship with respect to the respective second projection to which the centralfoldable tab 280 b is hinged, the tongues 291 b of the centralmale locking tabs 280 b is prevented from being received in the respective recess of theflap 228 a, theshoulder portions male locking tab 280 b has not passed through its respective locking slit or aperture and as such the centralmale locking tab 280 b is not in locking engagement with theflap 228 a; - a second locking position in which all the locking
tabs central locking tab 280 b is in locking engagement (the tongue of thefoldable tabs 280 b is received within the respective recess of the a first part F of the complementary locking device defined inflap 228 a) and theshoulder portions male locking tab 280 b has passed through its respective locking slit or aperture such that the centralmale locking tab 280 b is in locking engagement with theflap 228 a and wherein the endmostfoldable tabs edges foldable tabs flap 228 a, in some embodiments the endmostfoldable tabs foldable tabs second panel 212 by engagement of thetab first panel 228.

- Referring now to
FIG. 10 there is shown a blank 310 for forming a carton according to a fourth embodiment.Blank 310 comprises an alternative locking arrangement which includes comprises a first part M of a complementary locking device and a second part F of a complementary locking device. - In the embodiment of
FIG. 10 themale locking tabs male locking tabs first base panel 212. The endmostmale locking tabs male locking tabs male locking tab 354 is on an opposing side of themale locking tab 354 to the recess inmale locking tab 358, preferably the recesses are both on outermost side edges of each of themale locking tabs male locking tabs carton walls male locking tab 356 comprises an arcuate leading edge, which is optionally substantially hemispherical, and comprises a pair of recesses defined on opposing side edges thereof, the recesses each define a trailing edge for abutment with the second part F of the complementary locking device, in this way the centralmale locking tab 356 has substantially mushroom shaped appearance. - The recesses struck from the central
male locking tab 356 are smaller in dimension than those struck from each of the endmostmale locking tabs male locking tab 356 are in closer proximity to the free end edge of thefirst base panel 312 than the trailing edges of the endmostmale locking tabs first base panel 312 andsecond base panel 328 can be adjusted so as to increase or decrease the dimension of the tubular structure formed by thecarton walls -
FIGS. 11 and 12 illustrate a blank 450 for forming a carton according to a fifth embodiment.FIGS. 11 and 12 shows the area of afirst base panel 412 and the area of a second base panel 428 only. The other area of the blank 40 is identical to that of the blank 110 of the second embodiment. - Referring to
FIG. 11 , lockingtabs tabs common cutline 462 whereas the lockingtabs common cutline 463. The lockingtabs tabs locking tab 456 in the first group is spaced apart from thelocking tab 458 in the second group. The spacing between the lockingtab 456 and thelocking tab 458 is greater than the spacing between theadjacent locking tabs adjacent locking tabs aperture 455 is defined between the lockingtabs common cutline 462 while anaperture 459 is defined between the lockingtabs common cutline 463. Eachaperture first base panel 412 and defines in part a recess along the end edge of the first base panel. - Referring to
FIG. 12 , lockingslits fold line 452 which couples ahinge panel 428 a to the second base panel 428. The locking slit 450 b of the first group is spaced from the locking slit 450 c of the second group. The locking slits 450 a, 450 b of the first group are spaced from one another. The locking slits 450 c, 450 d of the second group are spaced from one another similarly to the lockingtabs slits second base panel 128. The second distance y is less than the first distance x. - It can be appreciated that various changes may be made within the scope of the present invention, for example, the size and shape of the panels and apertures may be adjusted to accommodate articles of differing size or shape. In other embodiments of the invention it is envisaged that the locking arrangement may comprise more than two locking positions; in which further locking tabs and further locking slits respectively are provided for providing further locking positions having greater or lesser degrees of overlap between the first and second base panels than the first and second position disclosed hereinabove, such embodiments may comprise three or more locking positions. In other embodiments it will be appreciated that the locking arrangement may comprise a plurality of male locking tabs offset with respect to each other so as to provide different position of engagement and a plurality of female locking slits or apertures offset with respect to each other so as to provide different position of engagement, in some embodiment the male tabs and female slits may be arranged to give progressively tighter positions of engagement (increasing the degree of overlap between the first and second panels) or they may be arranged such that the offset of the male tabs functions in opposition to the offset of the female tabs so as to cancel one another out, in such an arrangement the carton will only have one locking position but the respective locations at which the male and female portions engage with one another will be offset from one another. For example in one embodiment a locking arrangement is provided comprising two locking tabs projecting from an end edge of a first panel and two locking slits provided adjacent an end edge of the second panel. A locking slit is provided for receiving each of the respective locking tabs, the locking tabs and the locking slits being engageable by relative sliding movement of the locking tabs into the locking slits. A first one of the locking tabs and a first one of the locking slits are configured to secure the pair of panels in an at least partially overlapping relationship. A first point of engagement between the first and second panels is defined by the position that the first locking tabs and the first locking slit engage one another, the first point of engagement and is disposed at first location. A second one of the locking tabs and a second one of the locking slits are also configured to secure the pair of panels in an at least partially overlapping relationship. A second point of engagement between the first and second panels is defined by the position that the second locking tabs and the second locking slit engage one another; the second point of engagement is at second location. The first location is spaced at a first distance from a free end edge the first or second panel and the second location is spaced at a second distance from a free end edge the first or second panel the second distance being greater than the first distance. In this way the first and second points of engagement are offset from one another with respect to an edge of the composite panel formed by securing the first and second panels together; when the locking arrangement is employed in a wraparound style carton the first and second points of engagement are offset from one another with respect to a tubular axis of the carton.
- It will be recognised that as used herein, directional references such as “top”, “bottom”, “front”, “back”, “end”, “side”, “inner”, “outer”, “upper” and “lower” do not limit the respective panels to such orientation, but merely serve to distinguish these panels from one another.
- As used herein, the terms “hinged connection” and “fold line” refers to all manner of lines that define hinge features of the blank, facilitate folding portions of the blank with respect to one another, or otherwise indicate optimal panel folding locations for the blank. A fold line is typically a scored line, an embossed line, or a debossed line. Any reference to hinged connection or fold line should not be construed as necessarily referring to a single fold line only; indeed it is envisaged that hinged connection can be formed from any one or more of the following, a short slit, a frangible line or a fold line without departing from the scope of the invention.
- As used herein, the term “severance line” refers to all manner of lines that facilitate separating portions of the substrate from one another or that indicate optimal separation locations. Severance lines may be frangible or otherwise weakened lines, tear lines, cut lines, or slits.
- It should be understood that hinged connection, severance lines and fold lines can each include elements that are formed in the substrate of the blank including perforations, a line of perforations, a line of short slits, a line of half-cuts, a single half-cut, a cut line, an interrupted cut line, slits, scores, any combination thereof, and the like. The elements can be dimensioned and arranged to provide the desired functionality. For example, a line of perforations can be dimensioned or designed with degrees of weakness to define a fold line and/or a severance line. The line of perforations can be designed to facilitate folding and resist breaking, to facilitate folding and facilitate breaking with more effort, or to facilitate breaking with little effort.
