8 Claims. (Cl. 2169) This invention relates to a device, constituting a part of a labeling machine, for wiping down the two ends of a label so that the label may be placed entirely around a bottle or package, or nearly so.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a simplified single wiper which will wipe down one end of the label upon its stroke in one direction and the other end on its stroke in. the return direction, thus reducing the motion of the wiper to a minimum; to provide a swinging wiper for the above mentioned purpose and to provide an improved and simplified means for operating it in cooperation with the means for holding the label while it is being wiped.

The invention is shown as applied toa machine in which the articles 'Btobe labeled are placed upon a reciprocating carrier C which moves back and forth and comes to a stop when the label is to be placed in position on the article'B. The labeled article B is also shown in Figure) with the label L upon it.

'Fixed on the shaft I8 to oscillate with the lever I! are a pair of members 23 and 24 which are fixed together so that, as the shaft I8 swings, the 5 member 23 will move into the position shown in Fig. 3 to engage the label and turn it part way around the bottle before the member 26 engages it. Also there is a holder 25 pivoted on a shaft 26 and operated as in the above mentioned patent application for holding the center of the label on the bottle after it is once put in position.
On the shaft I2 is a bevel gear 30 meshing with a bevel gear M on a shaft 32, the shaft 32 by a pair of bevel gears 33 driving avertical shaft 34. Fixed to the top of this shaft 34, which extends up through the table of the machine frame It, is
a cam 35. This cam operates a pivoted lever 36 a head 43 which in turn carries the rubber wiper 44. The arms 40 and 42 are shown as integral but at any rate they are fixed with respect to each other. The shaft 4| and its associated parts are supported by a bracket 45 carried by the table of the machine and the end of the spring 38 fastened 1 v on a pin 46 is also carried by the table of the machine.
The operation is as follows: A label L is brought from a label holder, not shown, by the pickers 2| and located bythese pickers on the article B to be labeled. These pickers are in the form of a fork separated from each other and the holder 25 comes up between them and engages the dry side of the label, as shown in Fig. 3. The members 23 and .24 swing down to engage the ,0 label L, the member 23 being in advance of the member 24, and engages and swings one end of the label around a quadrant, as shown in Fig. 3.
It is at this time that the wiper 44 moves from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 4.- and wipes down the leading end of the label half way around the article to be labeled. As the wiper passes beyond this article to the position shown in Fig. 5 the members 23 and 24 move to the position shown in that figure and the mem- 50 ber'24 thereby swingsthe other end of the label around a quadrant and leaves the following end of the label projecting outwardly, all as shown in that figure.
Now, the wiper 44 starts back on its return movement and the members 23 and 2 1 also start back and the parts go through the position shown in Fig. 6 in which the following end of the label is wiped down completely and the action of labeling is just being completed. All this time the holder 25 has been in position between the two members 23 and 2 3 and has held what is substantially the center of the label against the bottle or the like B.
These motions are all comparatively simple and require a simple mechanism to produce 'them. The placing of the label is all accomplished by the action of the members 23 and 24 and the oscillation of a single wiper 44. On account of thisvery simple motion for wiping down the opposite ends of a label by means of a single wiper, that action is reduced to its simplest terms. The cost of the machine is reduced and its operation is simplified.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, 1 do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:-
1. In a label wiping device, the combination with means for holding a label on an article to be labeled, of a flexible fiat wiper, means for pivoting said wiper in a position in which, on the forward stroke, the wiper will wipe down one edge of the label and, on the reverse stroke, the -opposite side of the wiper will wipe down the other end of the label, and means for swinging the wiper on its pivot.
2. In a label wiping device, the combination with means for passing a label part way around the article, of a flexible wiper mounted to swing on an'axis and located in such position that the wiper is always on the same side of the article and that, upon its swinging motion in one direction, it will wipe down one end of the label, and, on its swinging motion back in the opposite direction, it will wipe down the other end of the label, and means for swinging said wiper on its axis.
3, The combination with a pair of members movable along opposite sides of an article to be labeled, one in advance of the other to first lay down a quadrant of the label on one side and the other member to thereafter lay down a quadrant of the label on the other side of said article, of a flexible wiper pivoted at a point to enable it to wipe down the first end of the label upon oscillation of the wiper in one direction and to engage and wipe down the other end of the label on its reverse motion.
4. In a label wiping device, the combination of 'means for holding a label against an article with an end projecting, a pivot stud, a flexible label wiper pivoted on said stud, a cam, and a lever having a roll engaging the cam, said lever being connected with said wiper, the cam being shaped to swing the wiper forward and back about its pivot, the wiper moving in a path for one side of it to engage the leading end of the label on its forward stroke and wipe that end of the label down and for the other side of the wiper to engage the opposite end of the label on the reverse stroke of the wiper and complete the labeling operation.
5. In a labeling device, the combination of means for laying a label down on opposite sides of the article to be labeled, a power shaft, a cam on the power shaft, a link controlled by the action of said cam, a shaft parallel with the link, means for connecting the last named shaft with the latter shaft for rotating it therewith, a cam on the power shaft, a pivoted lever having a cam roll for engaging the last named cam, a link pivotally connected with the lever, a shaft parallel with the last named shaft, and a flexible wiper oscillatably carried by the last named shaft and having an arm connected with said link for operating the Wiper.
6. In a labeling device, the combination of a pivoted'shaft, a pair of members fixed thereon, one in advance of the other and adapted to swing with the shaft, said members being spaced as far apart as the thickness of the article to be labeled to enable them to lay' the label down on opposite sides of said article, a power shaft, a cam on the latter shaft, a link connected with the first named shaft for swinging it, controlled by the action of said cam, a shaft parallel with the link, means for connecting the last named shaft with the power shaft for rotating it therewith, a cam on the power shaft, and a flexible wiper oscillatably carried and having an arm connected with said link for operating the'wiper.
7. In a labeling device, the combination of a pivoted shaft, a pair of members fixed thereon, one in advance of the other and adapted to swing with the shaft, said members being spaced as far apart as'the thickness of the article to be labeled to enable them to lay the label down on opposite sides of said article, a power shaft, a cam on the latter shaft, a link connected with the first named shaft for swinging it, controlled by the action of said; cam, a shaft parallel with the link, means for connecting the last named shaft with the power shaft for rotating it therewith, a cam on the power shaft, a pivoted lever having a cam roll for engaging the last named cam, a link pivotally connected with the lever, a shaft parallel with the last named shaft, and a flexible wiper oscillatably carriedby the last named shaft and having an arm connected with said link for operating the wiper.
8. The combination with means for first laying down a quadrant of the label on one side and thereafter laying down a quadrant of the label on the other side of an article, of a flexible wiper, means for oscillating the wiper, the wiper being pivoted at a point to enable it to wipe down the first end of the label upon oscillation of the wiper in one direction and. to engage and wipe down the other end of the label on its reverse motion.
