but permitting them to be separated, or assem-' bled, with relation to the mop holder.
That which I consider the most practical manner of carrying out the principles of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 shows my complete assembly ready for functioning.
Figure 2 shows the body member, with the mop engaging means turned back ready for the insertion of the mop-head therein.
Figure 3 presents a longitudinal central section of the body member alone.
Figure 4 shows a forward end elevation of the body member.
Figure 5 shows the head portion of the mop alone. And
Figure 6 shows the forward end portion of the handle.
Similar indices designate like parts throughout the several views.
For convenience of description only, Figs. 1, 5, and 6 are taken on a reduced scale, from that of Figs. 2, 3, and 4.
Also for convenience we will consider the mop member as located at the forward end, and the handle member as at the rear end of the assembled construction.
Referring now to the drawing in detail: Letter A designates the mop swab, the same being formed at its rear end into a head member A, as shown in Fig. 5.
Letter B designates the handle member, the lower or forward end portion of which is adapted to fit tightly in a flexible and resilient sleeve, and a channel b is formed therearound and therein, for the purpose hereinafter described.
This invention relates more specifically to an integral construction formed preferably of vulcanized rubber, or its equivalent, the same providing a hollow spherical body member I, having a thin portion extending around its central part to provide a flexible and resilient hinge, and also providing a comparatively large aperture formed through its forward end, with the periphery of said aperture presenting a flexible and elastic ring member 2, which is formed integral with the forward end of the member i, and which is adapted, when expanded, to be turned back over and around and rearward of the center of the member I, employing said thin portion as a hinge,
in which position it will be self retained, for the 5 purpose of enlarging said aperture, whereby the head A of the mop swab may be easily inserted into the member I.
The forward portion of the interior wall of the member 5 is provided with a plurality of concenls} tric ridges 3, which extend therearound, parallel with each other, which ridges add to the strength of the member I, but more particularly for the purpose of causing the body member to more firmly grasp the head portion A of the 3;; mop when the forward portion of the body member is restored to its normal position for retaining said head in secured position. For the purpose of further increasing the grip of the member I upon the head A, said ridges 3 are each 20 formed at an acute angle, in cross section, whereby the rear faces of said ridges are in alignment with each other, and at right-angles to the axis of the member I, and with their forward faces disposed at an acute angle with relation to said 25 rear faces and to said axis. Protruding from the rear end of the member I, and col-axially with the ring member 2, is a tubular sleeve 4, whose closed inner end terminates in conjunction'with the base portion 5, the inner end portion of the 3:.) latter being in conjunction with the wall of the member I. Formed around the wall of the inner periphery of said sleeve member I, and spaced a short distance rearward from the-base member 5, is a ring member I, which is for the purpose 5 hereinafter explained. Also formed integral with the sleeve member 4, and encircling the rear end of the outer periphery thereof, is a ring member 8, which is for the purpose of strengthening the end portion of said sleeve, and for more se- 4i curely retaining the handle B in operative condition.
It is to be observed that the thickness of the Wall of the member I varies, as shown in Fig. 3, the rear portion thereof being relatively thick 4; from its junction with the sleeve 4, to near the central portion of the member I, where it terminates in an angular shoulder I which latter flares outwardly at an angle into the flexible hinge portion I which is located between the forward terminal of said shoulder and therearward terminal of the ridges 3.
The purpose of turning the ring 2 back, as in Fig. 2, is that the head A of the mop may be easily inserted into the member I. To place the mop swab in operative condition I first expand the ring 2 and turn it back over the member l, with the member l acting as a hinge, to the position shown in Fig. 2, thereby greatly enlarging the aperture in the forward portion of the member I, whereby the head A of the mop swab may be easily inserted into the member I, after which the ring 2 may, by a single movement of ones hand, be turned forward to its normal position,
shown in Fig. 1, thereby accomplishing the assembly shown in Fig. 1.
Having now fully shown and described my invention, what I claim, is-
1. A mop holder including a hollow globular body member formed entirely of comparatively thick rubber, a thin portion to form a hinge about the central portion of said body member, and said body member having an open forward end portion adapted to be expanded and turned back around the central portion of the body member where it is adapted to be automatically retained for permitting the insertion of a mop swab therein after which it may be turned forward to its normal position for grasping said mop swab,
ridges formed around and projecting inwardly from the interior wall of said open end portion of the body member for engaging the mop swab, and means to secure a handle on the rear end of said body member.
2. A mop holder consisting of a hollow globular body member formed of flexible and resilient material having a comparatively large opening in its forward end, said body member presenting a thin hinge portion located around its central 10 portion, a ring member located around said open- 1 ing and integral with the forward end of the body member and adapted to be expanded and turned back around the rear portion of the body member for permitting the insertion of a mop 15 head into said body member, after which the forward portion of said body member, and said ring, may be returned to their normal position for engaging said mop head, and means formed with the forward portion of the interior of the body 50 member for grasping the mop head when it is 10- I cated in said body member.
