Abstract
A safety joint includes two tubular joint bodies. A plurality of circumferentially spaced first holes is formed in one tubular joint body and at least a second hole is formed in the other tubular joint body. The tubular joint bodies each have threaded sections. The threaded sections and holes are configured such that the at least one second hole is aligned with one of the first holes when a threaded connection is formed between the threaded sections. A shear pin is inserted into the aligned holes. Instead of providing the circumferentially spaced first holes in one of the tubular joint bodies, the circumferentially spaced first holes may be provided in a torque ring that is coupled to one of the tubular joint bodies by a threaded connection. The hole alignment could then be between the tubular joint body having the second hole and the torque ring.
Description
- The field of the present invention relates to a mechanism that enables separation of a tool string into multiple segments downhole.
- During drilling operations, there are instances when the drill string becomes stuck in the borehole. To remove the stuck portion of the drill string from the borehole, it is often necessary to separate the drill string into segments. The segments of the drill string can then be removed from the borehole with the aid of fishing tools as needed. Safety joints are weak joints that are intentionally built into a drill string at predetermined locations to allow separation of the drill string at the predetermined locations.
- A safety joint that can be installed in a tool string, such as a drill string, and that can permit the tool string to be separated into individual segments at a later time is disclosed. The safety joint has the advantage of simplicity and enables separation of the tool string without timing of threads on connections.
- In one illustrative embodiment, the safety joint comprises a first tubular joint body, a second tubular joint body, and a shear pin. The first tubular joint body has a first threaded surface and first hole section in which a plurality of first holes is formed. The first holes are spaced along a circumference of the first hole section. The second tubular joint body has a second threaded surface that is configured to engage the first threaded surface and a second hole section in which at least one second hole is formed. The first and second threaded surfaces and the first and second holes are configured such that the at least one second hole is aligned with one of the first holes when a threaded connection between the threaded surfaces is made up. The shear pin is inserted into the aligned first and second holes. The shear pin is configured to lie partly in each of the aligned first and second holes and to mechanically shear when a torque exceeding a combination of a break-out torque of the threaded connection and a shear strength of the shear pin is applied across the threaded connection.
- In another illustrative embodiment, the safety joint comprises a first tubular joint body, a second tubular joint body, a torque ring, and a shear pin. The first tubular joint body has a first threaded surface and a second threaded surface. The second tubular joint body has a third threaded surface for engagement with the first threaded surface to form a first threaded connection between the first tubular joint body and the second tubular joint body. The second tubular joint body also has a first hole section in which at least one first hole is formed. The torque ring has a fourth threaded surface for engagement with the second threaded surface to form a second threaded connection between the torque ring and the first tubular joint body. The torque ring includes a second hole section in which at least one set of second holes is formed. The second holes are spaced along a circumference of the second hole section. The threaded sections and holes are configured such that the at least one first hole is aligned with one of the second holes in the at least one set of second holes in two orthogonal directions when the first and second threaded connections are made up. The shear pin is inserted into the aligned first and second holes. The shear pin is configured to lie partly in each of the aligned first and second holes and to shear when a torque exceeding a combination of a break-out torque of the first threaded connection and a shear strength of the shear pin is applied across the first threaded connection.
- In yet another illustrative embodiment, a method of assembling a safety joint includes threading a torque ring into a first tubular joint body to form a threaded connection between the first tubular joint body and the torque ring. The method includes threading a second tubular joint body onto the first tubular joint body to form a threaded connection between the first tubular joint body and the second tubular joint body. The forming of the threaded connection between the first tubular joint body and the second tubular joint body will produce an alignment of a first hole in the second tubular joint body with a second hole in the torque ring, where the second hole is one of a set of second holes spaced along a circumference of the torque ring. The method includes inserting a shear pin into the aligned first and second holes.
- In another illustrative embodiment, a method of separating a drill string includes providing a drill string having first and second segments connected by a safety joint, where the safety joint comprises a first tubular joint body threadedly engaged with a second tubular joint body and a shear pin coupling the first tubular joint body to the second tubular joint body. The method includes applying a torque to the drill string in a first direction until the shear pin is sheared. Then, a pull force is applied to the drill string while rotating the drill string in a second direction opposite to the first direction to disengage the first tubular joint body from the second tubular joint body.

FIG. 1 shows atool string 11 in which asafety joint 10 is installed. Thetool string 11 is shown as a drill string, but in general the tool string may be any tool string for use in a borehole having multiple segments. In one embodiment, as shown inFIG. 2 , thesafety joint 10 has an upper tubular joint body (“upper joint”) 12 and a lower tubular joint body (“lower joint”) 14. (The terms “upper” and “lower” are relative to the orientation of thesafety joint 10 in the drawing.) Theupper joint 12 has anaxial bore 16, and thelower joint 14 has anaxial bore 18. In the assembled state of thesafety joint 10, theaxial bore 16 andaxial bore 18 are aligned along anaxial axis 40 of thesafety joint 10. Also, alower end portion 20 of theupper joint 12 is received in theaxial bore 18 in anupper end portion 22 of thelower joint 14 such that theaxial bores - The
lower end portion 20 of theupper joint 12 has acylindrical section 21 with an outer (or exterior) threadedsurface 24. Theupper end portion 22 of thelower joint 14 has acylindrical section 25 with an inner (or interior) threadedsurface 26 facing theaxial bore 18. In the assembled state of thesafety joint 10, the inner threadedsurface 26 of thelower joint 14 engages with the outer threadedsurface 24 of theupper joint 12 to form a threadedconnection 27 that threadably couples theupper joint 12 and thelower joint 14. Left-hand threads may be used on the threadedsurfaces surfaces - The
upper joint 12 at itsupper end 29 has an inner (or interior) threadedsurface 28 facing theaxial bore 16. The inner threadedsurface 28 is for engagement with an upper segment (11 a inFIG. 1 ) of the tool string. The lower joint 14 has at itslower end 31 an outer (or exterior) threadedsurface 30 for engagement with a lower segment (11 b inFIG. 1 ) of the tool string. Theupper end 29 including the inner threadedsurface 28 may be in the form of a box pipe joint, and thelower end 31 including the outer threadedsurface 30 may be in the form of a pin pipe joint. - In
FIG. 3 , thelower end portion 20 of the upper joint 12 has a firstcylindrical section 32, adjacent to or displaced axially from thesection 21 including the outer threadedsurface 24, in which an inner, or first, hole set 34 comprising M first holes is formed, where M is a positive integer. (The term “inner” as used with “hole set” is relative to the position of the hole set 34 in the safety joint when assembled.) The holes of the inner hole set 34 are arranged along a circumference of thesection 32. In one embodiment where M is greater than 1, the holes of the inner hole set 34 are equally spaced along the circumference of thesection 32. It is possible in other embodiments where M is greater than 1 that the holes of the inner hole set 34 could be unequally spaced along the circumference of thesection 32. Also, it is possible to have more than one hole set in thesection 32. - In
FIG. 4 , theupper end portion 22 of the lower joint 14 has a secondcylindrical section 36, adjacent to thesection 25 including the inner threaded surface (26 inFIG. 2 ), in which an outer, or second, hole set 38 comprising N second holes is formed, where N is a positive integer. (The term “outer” as used with “hole set” is relative to the position of the hole set in the safety joint 10 when assembled.) The holes of the outer hole set 38 are arranged along a circumference of thesection 36. In one embodiment where N is greater than 1, the holes of the outer hole set 38 are equally spaced along the circumference of thesection 36. It is possible in other embodiments where N is greater than 1 that the holes of the outer hole set 38 could be unequally spaced along the circumference of thesection 32. Also, it is possible to have more than one hole set in thesection 36. - Referring to
FIGS. 2-4 , in one embodiment, the axial position of the outer hole set 38 on the lower joint 14, the axial position of the inner hole set 34 on the upper joint 12, the configuration of the hole sets 34, 38, e.g., the number of holes and hole-to-hole spacing in the set, and the geometry of the threaded surfaces 24, 26, e.g., thread pitch and length, are selected such that when the threadedconnection 27 is formed between the threaded surfaces 24, 26, one of the holes (e.g., 38 a inFIG. 2 ) in the hole set 38 will be aligned with one of the holes (e.g., 34 a inFIG. 2 ) in the hole set 34 in a direction transverse to theaxial axis 40 of thesafety joint 10. Theholes axial direction 40 of thesafety joint 10. - In one embodiment, a combination of odd and even hole sets 34, 38 and equal hole spacing in the sets is used to achieve the alignment mentioned above without timing of the threads on the
connection 27. That is, one of the hole sets 34, 38 has an odd number of holes and equal hole spacing, while the other has an even number of holes and equal hole spacing. In a particular embodiment, N, which is the number of holes in the outer hole set 38, is greater than M, which is the number of holes in the inner hole set 34, where both hole sets 34, 38 use equal hole spacing. Thus, for example, if the outer hole set 38 has ten holes, the inner hole set 34 may have 9 holes, 7 holes, 5 holes, 3 holes, or 1 hole. In a more particular embodiment, N is greater than M by 1 and equal hole spacing is used in the hole sets 34, 38. Thus, for example, if the outer hole set 38 has five holes, the inner hole set 34 will have four holes. - Referring to
FIG. 2 , the upper joint 12 has anouter shoulder 42 that is axially displaced from the inner hole set (34 inFIG. 3 ). In one embodiment, theouter shoulder 42 is tapered. The lower joint 14 has an upper end face 44, which in one embodiment may be tapered. Theouter shoulder 42 and upper end face 44 are in opposed relation when making up the threadedconnection 27 between the threaded surfaces 24, 26. In one embodiment, when the threadedconnection 27 between the threaded surfaces 24, 26 is made up, the upper end face 44 will contact theouter shoulder 42. Thus theouter shoulder 42 may act as a stop for the lower joint 14 when making up the threadedconnection 27 between the threaded surfaces 24, 26. The axial distance between the inner hole set (34 inFIG. 3 ) and theouter shoulder 42 and the axial distance between the outer hole set (38 inFIG. 4 ) and the upper end face 44 may be selected such that when the upper end face 44 abuts theouter shoulder 42, the hole sets 34, 38 will be at the same axial position on thesafety joint 10 and one hole, e.g., hole 34 a, from the hole set 34 will be aligned with one hole, e.g., hole 38 a, from the hole set 38. Also, in other embodiments, theouter shoulder 42 and upper end face 44 may be square instead of being tapered. - A
shear pin 46 is inserted in the alignedholes shear pin 46 will prevent the upper joint 12 from unthreading from the lower joint 14 until it is mechanically sheared. Theshear pin 46 can be mechanically sheared by applying a torque across the threadedconnection 27 that is greater than a combination of a break-out torque of the threadedconnection 27 and a shear strength of theshear pin 46. After theshear pin 46 is sheared, the upper joint 12 can be disengaged from the lower joint 14. This can be used to advantage when it is desired to separate the tool string (11 inFIG. 1 ) into individual segments. - The
shear pin 46 when inserted into the alignedholes holes FIG. 3 ) are threaded holes so that insertion of theshear pin 46 into the alignedholes shear pin 46 into thehole 34 a. The holes of the outer hole set (38 inFIG. 4 ) may also be threaded holes. Aplug 48 may be inserted in theouter hole 38 a to retain theshear pin 46 in the alignedholes FIG. 4 ) that are not aligned with a hole in the inner hole set, i.e., in order to prevent debris from accumulating in these holes. - The
lower end portion 20 of the upper joint 12 includes a seal gland (or groove) 49 in which a sealingelement 51 is mounted. This seal area including theseal gland 49 is located adjacent to thesection 21 including the threadedsurface 24. In the assembled state of thesafety joint 10, the sealingelement 51 will be disposed between the upper joint 12 and the lower joint 14 and will form a seal between thejoint bodies connection 27 formed by the threaded surfaces 24, 26. -
FIG. 5 is an illustrative embodiment of a safety joint 50 that could be used in the tool string ofFIG. 1 instead of thesafety joint 10. Thesafety joint 50 includes an upper tubular joint body (“upper joint”) 52, a lower tubular joint body (“lower joint”) 54, and atorque ring 56. (The terms “upper” and “lower” are relative to the orientation of the safety joint 50 in the drawing.) The upper joint 52 has anaxial bore 55, the lower joint 54 has anaxial bore 58, and thetorque ring 56 has anaxial bore 60. In the assembled state of thesafety joint 10, the axial bores 55, 58, 60 are aligned along anaxial axis 61 of thesafety joint 50. Also, anupper end portion 62 of thetorque ring 56 is received in theaxial bore 55 in alower end portion 64 of the upper joint 52, and thelower end portion 64 of the upper joint 52 is received in anupper end portion 66 of the lower joint 54. In the assembled state, the axial bores 55, 58, 60 align to form a continuous conduit, which may be used for passage of fluid and tools. - The
lower end portion 64 of the upper joint 52 includes an outer threadedsurface 68. Theupper end portion 64 of the lower joint 54 includes an inner threadedsurface 70, which will engage the outer threadedsurface 68 of the upper joint 52 to form a threadedconnection 71 in the assembled state of thesafety joint 50. The threaded surfaces 68, 70 may use square threads in one embodiment or a different type of thread in another embodiment. Thelower end portion 64 of the upper joint 52 includes an inner threadedsurface 72. Theupper end portion 62 of thetorque ring 56 includes an outer threadedsurface 74, which will engage the inner threadedsurface 72 of the upper joint 52 to form a threadedconnection 75 in the assembled state of thesafety joint 50. - The upper joint 52 has an inner threaded
surface 76 at its upper end for engagement with an upper segment of tool string, such assegment 11 a inFIG. 1 . The lower joint 54 has an outer threadedsurface 78 for engagement with a lower segment of the tool string, such assegment 11 b inFIG. 1 . The upper end of the lower tubularjoint body 52 including the inner threadedsurface 76 may be in the form of a box pipe joint, and the lower end of the lower joint 54 including the outer threadedsurface 78 may be in the form of a pin pipe joint. - Referring to
FIG. 6 , thetorque ring 56 has acylindrical section 80, adjacent to the reduced-diameter section including the threadedsurface 74, in which two inner hole sets 82, 84 are formed. (The term “inner” as used with “hole set” is relative to the position of the hole set in the safety joint 50 when assembled.) Each of the inner hole sets 82, 84 comprises K holes, where K is a positive integer greater than 1. The holes of each inner hole set 82, 84 are arranged along a circumference of thesection 80. In one embodiment, the holes in each inner hole set 82, 84 are equally spaced along a circumference of thesection 80. It is possible in other embodiments that the holes of each inner hole set 82, 84 could be unequally spaced along the circumference of thesection 80. In one embodiment, the inner hole sets 82, 84 have equal number of holes. However, it is possible in other embodiments that the number of holes in the inner hole sets 82, 84 may be different. Also, the inner hole set 82 is axially spaced from the inner hole set 84 along thesection 80. The holes of the inner hole sets 82, 84 may be threaded holes. - In
FIG. 5 , the lower joint 54 has acylindrical section 86, displaced axially from the section including the inner threadedsurface 68, in whichouter holes holes - The axial spacing between the adjacent
outer holes section 86 is the same as the axial spacing between the adjacent inner hole sets 82, 84 (inFIG. 6 ) along thesection 80. When the threadedconnections outer hole 88 along the safety joint 50 will correspond to the axial position of the inner hole set 82 along thesafety joint 50 and the axial position of theouter hole 90 along the safety joint 50 will correspond to the axial position of the inner hole set 84 along thesafety joint 50. In addition, when the threadedconnections outer hole 88 will align with onehole 82 a from the inner hole set 82 in a direction transverse to theaxial axis 61 of thesafety joint 50 and theouter hole 90 will align with onehole 84 a from the inner hole set 84 in a direction transverse to theaxial axis 61 of thesafety joint 50. - In the assembled state of the
safety joint 50, shear pins 92, 94 are inserted in the alignedholes Plugs holes connection 71 between the threaded surfaces 68, 70 that is greater than a combination of a break-out torque of the threadedconnection 71 and a shear strength of either of the shear pins 92, 94, one or both of the shear pins 92, 94 will be mechanically sheared. The applied torque may be sufficient to shear both shear pins 92, 94 such that the upper joint 52 can be unthreaded from the lower joint 54. This would allow the tool string to which thesafety joint 50 is attached to be separated into individual segments. - Although the
safety joint 50 has been described with two inner hole sets 82, 84 on thetorque ring 56 and twoouter holes - One or
more sealing elements 100 may be provided for sealing in between the lower joint 54 and the upper joint 52 generally near the threadedconnection 71 formed between the threaded surfaces 68, 70. Similarly, one ormore sealing elements 102 may be provided to seal between the upper joint 52 and thetorque ring 56 proximate the threadedconnection 75 formed between the threaded surfaces 72, 74. One ormore sealing elements 104 may also be provided to seal between thetorque ring 56 and the lower joint 54. The sealingelements joint bodies torque ring 56. - To assemble the
safety joint 50, thetorque ring 56 is first threaded into the upper joint 52 until anouter shoulder 106 on thetorque ring 56 meets alower end face 108 of the upper joint 52. The lower joint 54 is then threaded onto the upper joint 52 until anupper end face 110 of the lower joint 54 meets anouter shoulder 112 of the upper joint 52. The two adjacentouter holes torque ring 56 when the threaded connections are completed. If theouter holes holes torque ring 56 can be slightly rotated in either direction about theaxial axis 61 of the safety joint 50 until theouter holes holes torque ring 56 and the lower joint 54, thetorque ring 56 may be rotated by inserting a cylindrical rod throughholes holes torque ring 56. Once inserted, the cylindrical rod can be used to turn thetorque ring 56 and align the holes by pushing the holes in a direction that would align the two sets of holes on the lower joint 54 andtorque ring 56. To accept the shear pins 92, 94, theouter holes holes outer holes inner holes surface 74 of thetorque ring 56 should be fine such that slight rotation of thetorque ring 56 to align theholes holes torque ring 56. A significant axial displacement of thetorque ring 56 may result in significant axial misalignment of theouter holes holes - After the
holes torque ring 56 and theholes shear pins plugs holes - While the invention has been described with respect to a limited number of embodiments, those skilled in the art, having benefit of this disclosure, will appreciate that other embodiments can be devised which do not depart from the scope of the invention as disclosed herein. Accordingly, the scope of the invention should be limited only by the attached claims.
