Description

    CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION
  • This application claims the benefit of priority of U.S. provisional application No. 61/932,541, filed Jan. 28, 2014, the contents of which are herein incorporated by reference.
  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention relates to a rocking chair and, more particularly, to a rocking chair that provides a greater range of rocking.
  • A rocking chair is a type of chair with two curved bands (also known as rockers) attached to the bottom of the legs, connecting the legs on each side to each other. The rockers contact the floor at only two points, giving the occupant the ability to rock back and forth by shifting his/her weight or pushing lightly with his/her feet. The size of the arc of the two curved bands limits the rotation to about 10 degrees.
  • As can be seen, there is a need for a rocking chair that provides a greater range of rocking.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • In one aspect of the present invention, a rocking chair comprises: a first side wall and a second side wall substantially parallel to one another, wherein the first side wall and the second side wall each comprise an upper rim and a lower rim meeting at a first point and a second point, wherein the lower rim forms an arc, wherein the lower rim of the first side wall is aligned with the lower rim of the second side wall; and a seat portion disposed in between the first side wall and the second side wall, and a back portion disposed in between the first side wall and the second side wall.
  • In another aspect of the present invention, a rocking chair comprises: a first side wall and a second side wall each comprising a lower rim comprising an arc having a greater circumference than a semi-circle; a seat attached in between the first side wall and the second side wall; and a back attached in between the first side wall and the second side wall.
  • In another aspect of the present invention, a method of rocking in a chair comprises: providing a chair comprising: a first side wall and a second side wall each having a first point and a second point forming an arc shaped rim in between, wherein the arc shaped rim rests on a surface; a seat portion; and a back portion, wherein the seat portion and the back portion are disposed between the first side wall and the second side wall; sitting on the seat portion, and thereby sitting in between the first side wall and the second side wall; rocking the chair back towards the first point and forward towards the second point from an upright position to an inverted position.
  • These and other features, aspects and advantages of the present invention will become better understood with reference to the following drawings, description and claims.
  • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
  • FIG. 1 is a side perspective view of the present invention in use at a rest position;
  • FIG. 2 is a side perspective view of the present invention in use, rocked back to a different position; and
  • FIG. 3 is a front perspective view of the present invention.
  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
  • The following detailed description is of the best currently contemplated modes of carrying out exemplary embodiments of the invention. The description is not to be taken in a limiting sense, but is made merely for the purpose of illustrating the general principles of the invention, since the scope of the invention is best defined by the appended claims.
  • The present invention includes a rocking chair that rocks a user from an upright position until the user's head is inverted. The range of the rocking is much greater as compared to any rocker that is currently available. The rocker is made of a seat, back, and two sides. The material can be wood, metal, plastic, fiberglass, and the like. In the medical field the present invention may help a user's back and may help users with disabilities.
  • Broadly, an embodiment of the present invention provides a rocking chair including two side walls that have an arc shaped rim formed to make contact with a surface. The side walls may be in the shape of a crescent. A seat and a back may be attached in between the two side walls. Therefore, a user may sit on the seat and rock farther back using the present invention as compared to other rockers.
  • Referring to FIGS. 1 through 3, the present invention includes a rocking chair 10. The rocking chair 10 includes a first side wall 12 and a second side wall 12. The first side wall 12 and the second side wall 12 may be substantially parallel relative to one another. Each sidewall 12 includes an upper rim, and a lower rim 16 meeting at a first point and a second point. The lower rim 16 may form an arc shape. The lower rim 16 of the first side wall 12 may align with the lower rim 16 on the second side wall 12.
  • In certain embodiments, the first side wall 12 and the second side wall 12 form a crescent shape. Therefore, the upper rim and the lower rim 16 may both form an arc shape. In certain embodiments, the circumference of the arc from the first point to the second point is greater than a semi-circle.
  • The present invention may further include a seat portion 18 and a back portion 14. The seat portion 18 and the back portion 14 are disposed between the first side wall 12 and the second side wall 12. In certain embodiments, the seat portion 18 and the back portion 14 connect the first side wall 12 to the second side wall 12. The seat portion 18 and the back portion 14 may be substantially perpendicular to the first side wall 12 and the second side wall 12. In certain embodiments, the seat portion 18 is substantially perpendicular relative to the back portion 14. In certain embodiments, the back portion 14 is connected to the seat portion 18, wherein the back portion 14 extends towards the first point and the seat portion 18 extends towards the second point.
  • A method of rocking in a chair may include the following: providing a chair comprising: a first side wall and a second side wall each having a first point and a second point forming an arc shaped rim in between, wherein the arc shaped rim rests on a surface; a seat portion; and a back portion, wherein the seat portion and the back portion are disposed between the first side wall and the second side wall; sitting on the seat portion, and thereby sitting in between the first side wall and the second side wall; rocking the chair back towards the first point and forward towards the second point from an upright position to an inverted position.
  • A method of making the present invention may include the following. Material may be carved, such as wood. The material may be carved to form a seat that may be about 24″ wide, about 18″ in length and about 1″ thick. The material may be carved to form a back that may be about 24″ wide, about 33″ long and about 1″ thick. The two side walls may be carved to be about 48″ tall, about 25″ wide and about 1″ thick, and may be shaped like a crescent. The seat and the back may be fastened in between the two side walls to form a rocking chair. The dimensions of the chair may be changed based on preference and size of the user.
  • It should be understood, of course, that the foregoing relates to exemplary embodiments of the invention and that modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the following claims.
