(ci. 2x1- 21) l This invention relates to bookbinding and more particularly to books bound in such a vway as to permit the pages or leaves-to be opened out flat l-without any natural or inherent tendency to close upon themselves.

Binding arrangements in accordance with my invention are especially adaptedA for use in bank -check books, note books, and other I,books in which it is usual to write without removing 'the pages. 'Ihe inherent tendency of the stub .pages or leaves of conventional check books to flike. It heretofore has been proposed to bind the leaves ofl books of this general class in looseleaf fashion, as byseparable metal rings or the like, but apparently rbecause of the relatively expensive or bulky construction such arrangements have not been used to any appreciable extent except in books designed for the insertion and removal of loose leaves.

An object of my invention is to provide a book comprising an organization of parts so constructed and arranged that the pages may be opened out fiat with no inherent tendency to close upon themselves, and which is of such simple, compact, and'inexpensive construction as 'to permit its being used in place of the usual tightly bound check book or the like at little or no additional cost. Other objects will become apparent from a reading of the following description, the appended claims, and the accompanying drawing in which:

The inventionis illustrated by way of example as embodied in a bank check book. although it will be understood that the structure disclosed may be embodied in books used for other purposes. In the embodiment shown in Figures l itc 5 inclusive', the book comprises a back proper A, covers B-B flexibly connected to the back I properas at a stack of leaves or pages C, and means' generally designated D for securing or binding the leaves to the back A. Each leaf or page comprises stubs 2 and checks 3 connected to the stubs along the line of perforations 4. l0 Stubs 2' from which the checks have been detached are shown turned over to the left of the back proper. The stubs are provided with oblong openings 5 arranged in spaced relation adjacent to the v.edges of the leaves contiguous to the back proper A.

The means D for securingor binding the leaves to the back proper includes a back-biliding member G preferably comprising a strip of sheet material provided with a facing of pre- 2o gummed fabric 6, as indicated in Figure 5, folded lengthwise with the gummed fabric in to form lower and upper strip parts Sb and 6. The member 6 is formed along its fold with a plurality of slits Gd which are spaced correspond- 25 ingly to the spacing of the openings 5, and the bottom or outer face of the lower strip part 8b is secured, as by gluing to the back-proper A, the upper strip part 6 being left free, as shown in Figure 3, until after the leaves are inserted in 30' the manner described later.

A plurality of retaining strips l are threaded through the openings 5 and are secured to the retaining strip 6 for binding the leaves -to the back-proper A. In assembling the parts, one $5 end 1 of each of the retaining strips is passed through an opening 6d in the back-binding member i, the inwardly extending ends '1 then being disposed between the lower and upper stripparts iband 6 of the back-binding member. The .prolll` truding portions of the strips 'I are then threaded through the several groups of registering openings 5 and the free ends Ib of the retaining strips then turned under the upper strip part 6 and between the latter and the lower part 6b. 'Ihe 45 summed fabric 6 having previously been moistened, the strip parts 6b and 6 are pressed `together, causing them to adhere to each other and to the interposed ends 1a and 1P of the retaining strips. l0

The form of'back-binding member shown in Figures 6 and rl is similar to the member 6 previously described, with the exception that the retaining strips are vformed integrally with the back-binding-strip. vThus, in the modification, u', i

the back-binding member or main strip l is provided with retaining strips 9 integrally connected to one longitudinal edge l' of the member I and adapted to be inserted through openings I4 in the folded edge of the member l.r This arrangement possesses the advantage of enabling the parts to be assembled more easily.

The arrangements described are simple andinexpensiveto manufacture, are compact. and provide for facile manipulation of the pages without their having any inherent tendency to close upon themselves or to move from the positions in which the user places them. v

The books disclosed embody the invention in a practical and the now preferred form, but it is apparent that the specific construction and relative arrangement of the partsmay be modied without departing from the invention as deilned in the claims.

I claim:

1. In a book, the combination of a back proper, `a stack of leaves provided with spaced registering openings adjacent to the edge to be bound; a backbinding member comprising a strip of sheet material folded lengthwise to form uppei and lower strip parts, said member being formed along its fold with a plurality of slits spaced correspondingly to the openings in said leaves, and the outer face of said lower strip part being secured to said back proper; a plurality of retaining strips threaded respectively through groups of registering openings in the leaves, one end portion of each retaining strip extending through one of the slits in said back-binding memberland theother end portion extending between the edges of said upper and lower strip parts'opposite said fold; and adhesive between said strip parts and the portions of said retaining strips lying therebetween.

In a book, the combination of a back proper; a stack of leaves provided with spaced registering openings adjacent to the edge to be bound; a backbinding member comprising a strip of gummed sheet materialfolded lengthwise with the gummed face in toaform upper and lower strip parts, said member being formed along its fold with a plurality ot slits spaced correspondingly to the openings in said leaves. and the outer face of said 5 lower strip part being secured to said back proper: and a plurality of retaining strips threaded respectively through groups of registering openings in the leaves, one end portion of each retaining strip extending through one of the slits in said 10 back-binding member and the other end portion extendingbetween the edges oi' said upper Ind lower strip parts opposite said fold.

3. In a book, the combination of a back proper, a stack of leaves provided with spaced registering 15 openings adjacent to the edge tobe bound; a back;- binding member comprising a strip of sheet mate. rial folded lengthwise to form upper and lower strip parts, said member being formed along its fold with a plurality of slits spaced correspond- 20 ingly to the openings in said leaves, and the outer face of said lower strip part being secured to said back proper; a plurality of retaining strips formed integrally with said lower strip part' 'and ybeing located respectively opposite sai'd 'slits and 25 lltudinally intermediate its edges, and being vided with sms mated adjacent to me, :om im 40 respectively opposite said retaining strips.
