My invention relates to improvements in foldingbed davenpo-rts wherein folding bed sections are folded a back-well of a davenport body and are arranged to be extended to form a bed 5 spring to support a top mattress in operative or unfolded position, one of said sections carrying the back cushion of the davenport in such a manmen that the same will not interfere with a comfortable occupancy of the bed when extended, and wherein one of the supporting legs for supporting said sections in extended position may be used as a handle to facilitate folding and unfolding of said sections.

The primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved folding bed davenport.

Another object is to provide a new and improved folding bed davenportof simple and efficient construction and arranged to support folding bed sections, when extended, at a regulation bed height and which may be easily folded and concealed within a davenport when folded, without betraying the nature of the davenport.

A further object is to provide a new and imrequired for use.

I accomplish these and other objects by means of the improved device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present application, in

The numeral i is used todesignate in general a davenport body having the usual arms 2, wings 3, back i, and the usual seat cushion supports 6 for supporting the removable seat cushions in- 5 dicated in dotted lines at i, in Fig. 1 of the drawmgs.

The seat cushion supports 6 are placed'in the forward or front portion of the body I- so as to form a substantially vertically disposed well or 10 compartment El within which is a pair of straps 9 bent U-sha-ped to support the folded sections.

The folding bed sections comprise a central section it, a head section l2, anda foot section M, hingedly connected together in the usual manner, the central section H and foot section it being h-ingedly connected by a short intermediate section it, the purpose of which will hereinafter be more fully set forth.

The central section is provided with a pair of forwardly extending arms ll, one on each side thereof, the free ends of said arms ll being pivotally mounted upon the inner sides of the arms 2 of the body I and between said arms 2 and the ends of the removable seat cushions i thereon. As these seat cushions form, no part of the present invention, they are merely indicated in dottedlines, being the usual removable seat cushions common to most folding bed d'avenports- The folding bed sections ll, l2, l4 and iii are. preferably composed of angle iron and have stretched thereon suitable spring mattress members it, as disclosed in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The several sections are also properly reinforced. by the bent transverse braces 99 to impart sufficient rigidity to the supporting structure for the spring mattress members [8.

The back cushion 2| of the davenport i is attached at its lower edgev to the central section I! by means of flexible metal straps- 22. and at its upper end by double hinged members. 23 to the foot section I' l, as disclosed in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the drawings. The top of the back cushion 2|" has an angular extension, 24 to. the end of which is hingedly connected, by one of'45 the double hinges 23, a cushioned flap or extension 26', by means of which hinged. connection said flap or extension 26 may drop away from the under side of the sections when extended, so as not to interfere with a comfortable occupancy of the bed.

An inverted. U'-shaped supporting leg. or foot 2T has its upper ends pivotally mounted upon opposite. sides of the central section l'i while its. connecting-portion or member rests upon a floor,

the foot or support 21 being of such length that it will cooperate with the pivoted arms IT to support the central section II horizontally when the sections are extended, as disclosed in Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawings. This foot is preferably covered with a suitable fabric to match the fabric of the body I to provide a comfortable grip for the hands when used as a handle in opening or closing the bed in a manner hereinafter more fully set forth.

The outer end of the foot section i4 is provided with a pair of supports or legs 28 pivotally connected thereto by a pair of rods 29 of different length or radius so that when said legs are folded they will lie flat on the under side of the foot section I4, as disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

The intermediate section I6 is provided with a secondary angle 3| secured therein, said section I6, as well as the angle 3I, is provided with square abutting shoulders 32 which abut with similar shoulders 32 upon the ends of the adjacent central and foot sections II and I4 respectively. By means of this arrangement, the movement of the several sections about their connecting pivotal points is limited in order to maintain the several sections in horizontal alignment when extended. The same square shoulders 32 are provided at the pivotal or hingedly connected junction of the central and head sections I I and I2 respectively.

A suitable spring 34 is connected on each side of the central section II and to the back 4, the tension of which acts as a counterbalancing force to check the final closing as well as the final extension movement of the folded sections.

In order to prevent undue sagging of the spring mattress members I8 when the bed is occupied by two persons, I have provided a non-stretchable member or chain 36 longitudinally and centrally of the several extended sections, as disclosed in Fig. 4 of the drawings. This chain or member 36 has been purposely omitted from the other figures of the drawings in order to disclose the more important parts which it would, in such folded positions, tend to obscure.

In operation the removable seat cushions, indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings, are first removed and the leg or support 21, the lower end of which rests along the lower portion of the back cushion 2I, is then exposed and rendered accessible for use, the legs of the same resting between the ends of the back cushion 2I and the wings 3 of the body I. The support 21 is then moved outwardly or forwardly as disclosed in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and then serves as a handle by means of which the several folded sections may be pulled out into operative or extended position, the counterbalancing effort of the springs 34 readily absorbing a portion of the Weight of said folded sections.

As the central section I I moves to a horizontal position, the leg or support 2'! is released, and actuated by the attraction of gravity, swings upon its pivots upon the central section I I until it assumes a vertical position disclosed in Fig. 3 of the drawings, thereby supporting said central section II, in conjunction with the arms IT, in a horizontal position.

When the central portion or section I I is horizontal, the foot portion I4 is next unfolded or moved to a horizontal position. As the square abutting shoulders 32 between the central, intermediate and foot sections II, I6, and I 4, respectively, abut, the said intermediate section I6, as well as the foot section I4, will be supported in said horizontal position by said abutting shoulders. The horizontal position of these several sections is further supported by the leg 28 which is moved upon its arms 29 to assume an operative supporting position.

The bed is then ready for occupancy.

If it is occupied by two persons, sleeping, in the usual manner, on opposite sides of said extended sections, the non-stretchable chain or member 36 will prevent undue sagging of the spring mattress members Ill at the center and thereby prevent said two occupants from rolling together into the center of the extended sections.

When the parts are extended, the back cushion 2I, being connected by the flexible straps 22 and the double hinges 23, will be permitted to move away from the bottom of the extended centralsection l I, as disclosed in Fig. 3 of the drawings, a sufficient extent to allow a comfortable movement of the spring mattress members I8 and thereby prevent contact with an occupant of said extended sections.

The several sections may be readily folded back into the body I of the davenport by reversing the above described opening or extending process.

When the sections are being folded into the body I, the tension of the springs 34 again acts as a counter-balancing force to absorb a portion of the weight of the folding sections, thereby facilitating the closing as well as the opening operation.

When the folded parts have been lowered into position within the body I, the handle or support 2'! is again lowered with its legs pressed back and concealed between the ends of the back cushion 2! and the wings 3 of the body I. When the removable seat cushions, indicated at 'I in Fig. l of the drawings, are replaced they totally conceal the lower or connecting portion of said member 21.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. A folding bed davenport comprising a davenport body having a compartment back of the seat and back cushions, and extending from the top of the bottom of said body; a folding bed frame comprising hinged central head and foot sections folded within said compartment; laterally extending arms mounted upon each side of the central section and having their free ends pivotally mounted upon the body between the seat cushions and the arms of said body to support the folding bed sections when extended, at regulation height above a floor; and a U-shaped supporting leg having its free ends pivotally connected to the sides of the central section and arranged to support said central section when extended and to lie between the ends of the back cushion and wings of the body and behind the seat cushions when folded, said support being arranged to be extended on its pivot forwardly of the back cushion to serve as a handle to facilitate the extending and folding of the folding sections.

2. A folding davenport bed comprising a body having arms, wings, and seat cushion supports arranged in spaced relation to the back of said body; a folding bed frame comprising hingedly connected head, central and foot sections folded between the cushion supports and the back of said body, said central section being substantially vertical; a davenport back cushion mounted upon the central section; forwardly extending arms mounted one upon each side of the central section and having their free ends pivotally mounted upon the inner sides of the body arms and arranged to support the folding bed sections, when extended, at a regulation height above a floor; and a U-shaped supporting leg having its free ends pivotally connected to opposite sides of the central section and arranged to support said section horizontally when extended and to lie between the ends of the back cushion on the central section and the body wings and back of removable seat cushions on the cushion supports when said sections are folded, and also arranged to be extended forwardly on its pivot to facilitate folding and extending of the bed sections.

3. A folding davenport bed comprising a body having arms, wings, and seat cushion supports arranged in spaced relation to the back of said body; a folding bed frame comprising hingedly connected head, central and foot sections folded between the cushion supports and the back of said body, said central section being substantially vertical; a davenport back cushion mounted upon the central section; forwardly extending arms mounted one upon each side of the central section and having their free ends pivotally mounted upon the inner sides of the body arms and arranged to support the folding bed sections, when extended, at a regulation height above a floor; a U-shaped supporting leg having its free ends pivotally connected to opposite sides of the central section and arranged to support said section horizontally when extended and to lie between the ends of the back cushion on the central section and the body wings and back of removable seat cushions on the cushion supports when said sec-
