Description

UNITED A vSTATES PATENT OFFICE A681,199 (abandoned). cation April 6, 1935, Serial No. 15,127.
Divided and this appli- France September 3, 1932 3 Claims.
The present application, which is a. division of my U, S. patent application Ser. No. 681,199, of July 19, 1933, concerns the manufacture of nails including a cylindrical part carrying the head and a ribbed -part carrying thel point, said ribbed part being of a width substantially greater than the diameter of the cylindrical part.
According to my invention, I form a bar along which cylindrical parts and cross-shaped, or more generally star-shaped, parts alternate, said parts being of suitable lengths. Each cylindrical part, after having been cut at a suitable distance from the cross-shaped part adjacent thereto, is upset so as to form the head. The point of the preceding nail is itself obtained by stampingvof the remainder of the same cylindrical part, or otherwise by cutting of the end of the cross shaped part above mentioned.
Preferred embodiments of the present invention will be hereinafter described, with reference to the accompanying drawings given merely by way of example, and in which:
Fig. 1 shows a cylindrical bar;
Fig. 2 shows the same bar after it has been treated so as to form along it porticns of crossshaped section;
Fig. 3 is a sectional View on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of one of the elements into which the bar is cut, according to a first embodiment;
Fig. 5 shows the nail obtained from the element of Fig. 4`;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the elements into which the bar is cut according to another embodiment;
Fig. '7 shows the nail obtained from the ele-` ment of Fig. 6.
According to the present invention, a cylindrical 'bar as shown in Fig. 1 is deformed at certain places so as to form parts b of cross-shaped section (Figs. 2 and 3) separated from one another by unaltered cylindricall parts a.
The bar thus obtained, as shown in Fig. 2, is
'then cut into a plurality of elements each of 4 treated by stamping so as to form point d.
According to another embodiment, each element (Fig. 6) is cut at the end of the crossshaped part, as at b1 and said end is then cut so as to form a point such as shown at e in Fig. 7.
It is pointed out that, according to the present invention., the Width of the ribbed, or cross- 5 shaped parts b of thebar is substantially greater than the diameter of the cylindrical parts a, of said rod, the cross sectional area in part b being substantially the same as in parta. In other words, the deformation of parts b is made in 10 such manner as to modify the shape of the cross section of the bar Without substantially varying the area of said cross section. 4
While I have, in theabove description, disclosed what I deem to be practical embodiments i5 of the invention, it should be Well understood that I do not Wish to be limited thereto as there might be changes made Without departing from the principle of the invention as comprehended within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
l. The method of making nails which comprises, taking a cylindrical bar of metal, deforming certain parts of the bar, all of the -same length and separated from one another by unaltered cylindrical parts also all of the same length, so as to give. them a star shaped section of a width substantially greater than the diameter of the bar, cutting said bar into elements each of which includes at least a portion of a 30 cylindrical part and at least av portion of the adjacent star-shaped part, upsetting the end of the cylindrical part of each element so as to form the head of the nail, and treating the opposite end of said element so as to form the point of the nail.
2. The method of making nails which comprises taking a cylindrical bar of metal, deforming certain parts-of said bar, all of the same length and separated from one another by unaltered cylindrical parts also all of the same length, so as to give them a cross-shaped section of a width substantially greater than the diameter of the bar, cutting said bar into elements each of which includes a portion of a cylindrical part, the whole of the adjacent cross-shaped par-t, and a portion of the next cylindrical part, upsetting the end of the iirst mentiened cylindrical portion of each 'element so as to form the head of the nail, and treating the opposite cylindrical portion of said element by stamping so as to form the point of the nail.
3. The method of making nails which comprises taking a cylindrical bar of metal, deforming certain parts of the bar, all of the same length and separated from one another by unaltered cylindricalparts also all of the same length, so as yto give them 'a cross-shaped section of aI width substantially greater than the diameter of the bar, cutting said bar into elements each of which includes at least a portion of a cylindrical part
