UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
JOSEPH W. TAYLOR, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CH l MNEY-CAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,466, dated March 19, 1878; application led September 17, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. TAYLOR, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improved Ohimney-Cap; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making' a part of kthis speciiication.
My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of chimney-caps, to be xed Ventilating-shafts for the purpose of producing an even and augmented upward draft through the same. Y
My invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of the parts of a chimney-cap, as hereinafter particularly described, for the purposes above indicated, and also for the purpose of rendering the several parts easily detachable for convenience in transmission.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l rep-4 resents a side elevation of my improved chimneycap, and Fig.2 a vertical transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in both the iigures.
A is a pipe, usually of sheet metal, which ts onto the top of the chimney in the ordinary manner. B is a dome-shaped canopy or bonnet, of sheet metal Or similar material,
which I seciue in such position that the upper end of the pipe A will be about midway between its upper and lower ends, both of which are Open, and the former of which is about of the same diameter as the pipe A.
C is a similar dome-shaped bonnet, placed in an inverted position, and secured to the pipe A. The distance at which the bases of these bonnets B and G are placed from each other may be about the same as the distance between the top of the pipe A and the top of the dome B.
D is a circular plate or disk, secured directly over the dome B at some distance therefrom,
and of about the same diameter as the bases ards, and their lower ends being secured to' the top of the pipe A, while the neck or upper 'end of the dome B is riveted or bolted to the said standards about midway of their length.
For the purpose of making the parts detachable for convenience in transporting the same,
I connect the standards c' to the pipe A by screw-bolts o, and also connect the disk D and bonnet B to the standard by similar bolts o. The inverted bonnet C is also secured to the pipe A in the same manner, and by these means each part may be readily and easily detached from the rest.
By means Of my said invention down drafts in the chimney to which it is applied are effectually prevented, the construction and arrangement of the parts being such that gusts Of wind striking the apparatus from above will have a tendency to increase the upward draft in the chimney, for the reason that such gusts, striking the recesses within the inverted dome C, will, by their rebound, cause a partial vacuum immediately above the 4top of the pipe A; and by the use of my said nvention the draft of the chimney is increased by the action of the currents of cold air entering by the opening `on between the bases of the domes, and passing upward through the apparatus.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A chimneycap consisting of the domes B and C and disk D, arranged in relation to the pipe A, substantially as herein shown and described. A
2. In combination with the disk D, domes B and O, and pipe A, the standards fi and screw-bolts o, as and for the purpose set forth.
