O. L. HUNLEY SLIP OR PETTICOAT Sept. 17, 1935;
Filed Oct. 29, 1954 Patented Sept. 17, 1935 UNITED STATES V 2,014,6Zt
PATENT OFFIQE 2 Claims.
My invention relates to anundergarment in the nature of'a slip or petticoat and the principal object of my invention is, to provide a relatively simple, practical and inexpensive slip or 5 petticoat that provides convenience and comfort to the wearer during pregnancy and while the infant is being nursed.
The invention herein disclosed is somewhat similar to the maternity gown forming the subject matter of my co-pending application for U. S. Letters Patent filed July 2nd, 1934, Serial No. 733,396.
A further object of my invention is, to provide a slip or petticoat having in its upper front portion a vertically disposed opening that extends from the front of the neck opening downwardly to a point a substantial distance below the waistline in order that those portions of the slip that cover the front of the wearers body may be readily and conveniently adjusted to difierent sizes and said vertically disposed opening being covered by an overlying apron-like member that is secured to the upper portion of the slip or petticoat at points adjacent to the neck and arm openings.
A further object of my invention is, to provide an adjustable strap or connection that extends from one side of the vertically disposed opening to the other at or near the waistline so as to provide ready adjustment for the garment that overlies the waist and abdominal portions of the wearers body.
With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangements of parts that will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a slip or petticoat constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the slip or petticoat before the apronlike member is applied thereto.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention, l designates the body of the slip or petticoat which is of conventional construction and shaped so as to conform to the wearers body and the upper portion of the body of the slip is constructed so as to provide a neck opening II and arm openings I2.
The upper front portion of the fabric forming the body of the slip or petticoat is cut away beginning at the neck opening so as to provide a vertically disposed opening I3, the width of which may be from three to six or eight inches as desired, and this opening extends downward to a 5 point a substantial distance below the waistline of the garment.
In order to conveniently adjust that portion of the slip or petticoat that covers the waist and abdominal portions of the wearers body, a strap or straps such as I4 are secured to the garment at or near the waistline and the free ends of said straps are engaged by an adjustable slide or buckle I5, which may be of conventional type.
An apronlike member I6 of suitable fabric provides a cover for the entire upper front portion of the body It of the garment and the opening I3 therein and the upper portion of this covering member is suitably secured preferably by stitching, to the upper portion of the garment body I0 along the front edges of the armholes I2 and along the front edges of the neck opening II to the sides of the opening I3.
The rows of stitching thatconnect the apronlike member to the, body of the garment are designated by the numeral I'I.
Thus the apronlike member hangs freely from the upper front portion of the body of the garment and entirely closes the opening I3.
The depending side edges of the covering member I6 extend around to the sides of the body of the garment II], as illustrated in Fig. 3 and said side edges terminate at or near the vertical side seams of the slip or petticoat II).
The apronlike member I6 being attached only to the upper front portion of the slip or petticoat I0, holds the upper front portions of the said slip or petticoat in proper position upon the wearers body and the adjustable strap or straps I4 provide simple and convenient means for adjusting the intermediate portion of the slip or petticoat around the waist and over the lower portion of the wearers body.
The opening I3 in the slip or petticoat enables the wearer of the garment to conveniently carry out the nursing functions and during such procedure the front covering member It may be readily turned from one side to the other to uncover the opening in the slip.
Inasmuch as my improved slip or petticoat is entirely devoid of buttons and buttonholes, hooks and eyes, snap fasteners and the like, the garment may be very easily and quickly adjusted to the convenience of the wearer with very little effort.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a slip or petticoat that is relatively simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture and which affords great comfort and convenience to the wearer during pregnancy and also during nursing functions.
It will be understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved slip or petticoat may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a new article of manufacture, a slip, comprising a body covering garment provided in its upper front portion with an opening of substantial width that extends from the neck opening of the garment downwardly to a point below the waistline thereof, an apronlike member secured at its upper end to the front shoulder portion of the slip and depending so as to entirely cover the upper front portion of said slip or petticoat and the opening therein the side edges of which apron-like member are free and unattached and hang freely at the sides of the garment below the arm openings therein and flexible adjusting means connecting the sides of the opening in the front of said slip adjacent to the waistline thereof.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a slip, comprising a body covering garment having the usual neck and arm openings and provided in its upper front portion with a vertically disposed opening of substantial width that extends from the neck opening of the garment to a point below the waistline thereof, an apronlike member permanently secured to the upper front portion of said body covering garment adjacent the edges of the side portions of the neck opening and adjacent the front edges of the arm openings which apronlike member depends to a point below the lower end of the opening in the front of said garment the side edges of which apron-like member are free and unattached and occupy positions adjacent the sides of the body covering garment below the arm openings therein and adjustable means connecting the edges of the body covering garment at the sides of the opening therein adjacent the waistline thereof.
ORA L. HUNLEY.
