This invention relates to gauges for' ornamenting dies for use in forming ornamental designs in or on shoe uppers.
The invention comprises the herein disclosed improvements and additions in an ornamenting die of the type disclosed in my copending application Serial No. 744,896, filed September 21, 1934.
An object of the invention is to equip the ornamenting die of my said copending application with an improved operating and gauging means for adjusting and holding in their adjusted positions certain of thegauging elements embodied in the die.
Other objects will be apparent from the following description, reference being made to the annexed drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a top plan View of a portion of the die embodying the present invention.

The ornamenting die in which thev present invention is embodied comprises a base i supporting a plate 2 by means of attaching members 3. A pair of parallel guide strips 4 are attached to the underside of the plate 2. and a plate 5 is mounted for forward and rearward sliding movementsbetween said strips. The plate 5 is supported against the underside of Athe plate 2 by arms 6 attached to the strips 4l. A screw l is rotatively supported in a member 8 attached to the underside of the forward end of the plate 2 and held from longitudinal movements by a washer 9 attached thereto at the inner side of the member 3, and by a head lil .attached thereto at the outer side of the member B. The screw l is screwed through a bracket il attached to the plate 5. A crank handle l2 is attached to the head lil and constitutes means for rotating the screw 'i to move the plate 5 longitudinally.
The rear end of the plate 5 is formed with a number of alined transverse slots i3, hi, l5 and it, which cross angularly disposed slots il, i8, l@ and 2t, respectively, formed in the rear portion of the plate 2. Gauge elements 2| extend through the slots il and 2t) and into the slots i3 and it, and gauge elements 22 extend through the slots i8 and it and into the slots lli and l5, and-are operated. These gauge elements 2i and 22 are moved along the respective slots H, it, It and 2!) when the plate 5 is moved forwardly or rearwardly,
In the presentV invention, the plate 2 is provided with a forwardly extended portion 23 having in its curved forward edge a series of notches .Zi forming teeth 25, the notches being in aline-- ment with numbered graduaticns 26 formed on 5 the upper surface of the extension 23. A lever 2? is mounted on a pivot 2B below and supported by the plate 2, and extends forwardly beyond the teeth 25. A plate 23 is supported on a pivot 363 carried by the lever 2l', and has a pointer 3l on 10 its rear end extending over the extension 23 and adapted to be moved intocooperative relationship with any of the graduations 26. A tooth or detent 32 is formed in connection with the plate 29 and may be engaged in any one of the l5 notches 24 to lock or latch the lever 2l against accidental movement or displacement. A spring 33 mounted between the lever 2l and the plate 29 functions to hold the tooth or detent 32 in any notch 2li in which it is placed, but will yield to 20 permit movement of the plate 29 to disengage the tooth or detent 32 from any notch 24.
The rear end of the lever 21 has an inwardly extended arm 3d provided with a slot 35 receiving a roller 36 rotatively supported by a slide 3l. The slide 3l is supported for forward and rearward sliding movements by combined supports and guides 38 and 38.
A bar 39 is mounted for forward and rearward sliding movements between guides il below the plate 2 and has, in connection with its forward end, a pin or lug lli projecting through a slot l2 in the plate 2. The front end of the bar 39 is mounted on a support i3 carried by a pivot it on the slide 3l. The pin or lug li extends through the slide 3l, so that forward and rearward movement of the slide 3l' will move the bar 39 forwardly and rearwardly.
A gauge 45 is mounted for forward and rearward sliding movements above the rear portion of the plate 2 and is detachably connected with the rear end of the bar 39 by pins i5 extending through a longitudinal slot 4l in the plate 2.
The inner or rear end of the gauge 45 has meansV i8 cooperating therewith to facilitatecentering or properly locating the shoe upper preparatory for operation of the machine in which the die is placed. As shown, the centering'means is a pointer that will point to the center of the shoe upper when the shoe upper is properly lo- 50 cated and centered. Thus the device i5 with the pointer 48 thereon constitutes a combined centering and gauging member for the shoe upper.
In operation or use of the device, the shoe uppers to be ornamented are laid upon the plate 55 2 and extend rearwardly beyond said plate 2 in cooperative relationship to the ornamenting die devices not herein illustrated but clearly shown in said application Serial No. 744,896. The gauge 45 may be moved forwardly and rearwardly to proper gauging position for shoe uppers of different shapes and sizes by operation of the lever 21, and may be latched and securely held in any of its adjusted positions by the tooth or detent 32 engaging in the proper notch 24. The numbered graduations 25 indicate the positions in which the gauge 45 should be placed for cooperation with shoe uppers of different shapes and sizes.
It must now be apparent that this invention attains all of its intended objects and purposes efficiently and satisfactorily. The invention may be varied within the scope of equivalent limits without departure from the nature and principle thereof.
I claim:-
1. A gauge for an ornamenting die having a plate for supporting a part of a shoe upper that has a part extending beyond said plate, a gauge member mounted for sliding movements along the upper side of said plate, a slide supported by said plate at the underside thereof, a lever mounted below and extending forwardly beyond said plate and connected with said slide for moving said slide and thereby said gauge member to different adjusted positions, and cooperating parts on said lever and the forward margin of said plate indicating different adjusted positions of said gauge member and positively locking said lever and thereby said gauge member against accidental operation.
2. A gauge for an ornamenting die having a plate for supporting a shoe upper to be ornamented and having a slot, a gauge member mounted for sliding movements along the upper side of said plate, a slide supported below said plate and connected with said gauge member through said slot for moving said gauge member forwardly and rearwardly to different adjusted positions for gauging different types of shoe uppers, a lever having its rear end pivoted to said slide and its forward end beyond the forward edge of said plate, cooperating parts on said lever and the forward margin of said plate indicating different adjusted positions of said gauge member for gauging different types of shoe uppers, and cooperating parts on said plate and said mechanism releasably locking said mechanism and thereby said gauge member against accidental operation.
3. A gauge for an ornamenting die having a plate for supporting a shoe upper to be ornamented, a member mounted for sliding movements along the upper side of said plate for centering and gauging the shoe upper that is to be ornamented, a slide supported below said plate and connected with said member, a bell crank lever having one arm connected with said slide for operating said slide and thereby moving said member to different adjusted positions for gauging and centering different types of shoe uppers, the other arm of said bell crank lever projecting beyond the forward edge of said plate, and a device supported by said lever and cooperating with said plate to indicate proper positions of said member for gauging and centering different types of shoe uppers.
4. A gauge for an ornamenting die having a plate for supporting a shoe upper to be ornamented and having a slot extending forwardly and rearwardly, a gauge member mounted for sliding movements along the upper side of said plate, a bar supported for sliding movements below said plate and connected with said gauge member through said slot, a slide supported by said plate and connected with said bar, a bell crank lever pivotally supported below said plate and having one arm connected with said slide for l operating said slide and thereby said bar and said gauge member, the other arm of said bell crank lever projecting beyond the forward edge of said plate, means indicating proper positions of said gauge member for gauging different types l of shoe uppers, and cooperating parts on said lever and said plate for holding said lever in its different adjusted positions.
5. A gauge for an ornamenting die having a plate for supporting a shoe upper and having ai 2@ forward extension beyond any part of the shoe' upper supported by said plate, a gauge member mounted for sliding movements along the upper side of said plate, a slide supported below said plate, means for sliding said gauge member by said slide to different positions for gauging different types of shoe uppers, a bell crank lever having one arm pivoted to said slide and the other arm extending beyond the front of said plate, and a movable part supported by said other arm of said bell crank lever and cooperating with said extension to said plate to hold said lever from accidental operation.
6. A gauge for an ornamenting die having a plate for supporting a shoe upper and having a forward extension beyond any part of the shoe upper supported by said plate, a gauge member mounted for sliding movements along the upper side of said plate, a slide supported below said plate, means for sliding said gauge member by 40 said slide to different positions for gauging different types of shoe uppers, a bell crank lever having one arm pivoted to said slide and the other arm extending forwardly beyond the forward end of said plate, a movable part supported by said other arm of said bell crank lever and cooperating with said extension to said plate to hold said lever from accidental operation, and means in connection with said lever and on said extension cooperating to indicate proper adjusted positions of said gauge member for gauging different types of shoe uppers.

A gauge for an ornamenting die having a plate for supporting a part of a shoe upper that has a part extending beyond said plate to be ornamented, means for supporting different types of ornamenting dies beyond said plate for ornamenting the extended parts of shoe uppers, a gauge member mounted for sliding movements along the upper side of said plate for gauging shoe uppers to be ornamented by any selected dies, mechanism mounted below said plate and connected with said gauge member for moving said gauge member to different adjusted positions to gauge different types of shoe uppers, a bell crank lever having one arm pivoted to said mechanism and the other arm extending forwardly beyond the forward end of said plate, and cooperating parts on said plate and said lever releasably holding said lever and thereby said gauge member against accidental operation.
