Abstract
A kayak motor attachment device for fastening a motor to a kayak comprising an elongated frame, where the elongated frame includes a pair of slots; a pair of fishing pole supports inserted into a pair of receiving holes positioned at a back of the kayak, where the pair of fishing pole supports attach to the elongated frame with a plurality of bolts through the pair of slots; an attachment housing secured to an end of the elongated frame; a support shaft attached to the attachment housing, where the support shaft rotates within the attachment housing to guide a propeller at a bottom end of the support shaft; and a motor attached atop the support shaft to power the propeller.
Description
- 1. Field of the Invention
- The present invention relates to a device to assists a user in a kayak to securely attach a motor to the rear portion of their kayak.
- 2. Description of Related Art
- Kayaking is a fun water sport enjoyed in all types of water environments. Some people enjoy the exhilaration of kayaking down white water rapids, while others enjoy the more peaceful waters of a placid lake or calm ocean waves. Most kayaks comprise enclosed bodies where the user sits on a seat within a cockpit. Typically, to steer and maneuver the kayak the user rows a double sided paddle to both propel themselves forward or backward and to change the direction where they are headed.
- Many times a fisherman may desire to use a kayak over larger more cumbersome vessels. The kayaks are easier to maneuver and can get to locations the larger vessels cannot. A problem commonly experienced while fishing in a kayak is that they quickly become tiresome, requiring the fisherman to continuously paddle to maintain their location. This leaves little reserve energy to fish and then return to shore. Due to exhaustion, fishing in a kayak is often limited to locations close to shore, with periodic breaks to allow the fisherman to rest and regain strength.
- Therefore, it would be beneficial in the art to provide a device that attaches a motor to a kayak to relieve the burden of paddling while operating a kayak. It would also be desirable in the art to provide a device that may be easily attached to a kayak and exchanged between different kayaks for convenience to the user.
- In view of the foregoing disadvantages inherent in the prior art, the general purpose of the present invention is to provide a kayak motor attachment device for fastening a motor to a kayak, configured to include all of the advantages of the prior art, and to overcome the drawbacks inherent therein.
- Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide an attachment device to secure a motor to a kayak.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide an attachment device that is easily adaptable to different sized kayaks.
- To achieve the above objects, in an aspect of the present invention, a kayak motor attachment device is described comprising an elongated frame, where the elongated frame includes a pair of slots; a pair of fishing pole supports inserted into a pair of receiving holes positioned at a back of the kayak, where the pair of fishing pole supports attach to the elongated frame with a plurality of bolts through the pair of slots; an attachment housing secured to an end of the elongated frame; a support shaft attached to the attachment housing, where the support shaft rotates within the attachment housing to guide a propeller at a bottom end of the support shaft; and a motor attached atop the support shaft to power the propeller.
- These together with other aspects of the present invention, along with the various features of novelty that characterize the present invention, are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed hereto and form a part of this present invention. For a better understanding of the present invention, its operating advantages, and the specific objects attained by its uses, reference should be made to the accompanying drawings and descriptive matter in which there are illustrated exemplary embodiments of the present invention.
- The advantages and features of the present invention will become better understood with reference to the following detailed description and claims taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein like elements are identified with like symbols, and in which:

FIG. 1 depicts a perspective view of a kayak motor attachment device attached at a rear of a kayak in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention; and -
FIG. 2 depicts a top view of a kayak motor attachment device in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention. - Like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the description of several views of the drawings.
- The present invention relates to a device to assists a user in a kayak to securely attach a motor to the rear portion of their kayak. The present invention provides a kayak motor attachment device to allow an individual to attach a motor to their kayak effectively eliminating the need to manually paddle the kayak. The kayak motor attachment device includes an elongated frame to mount the motor to a pair of fishing pole supports at the back of the kayak. The frame is adjustable against the fishing pole supports to allow for kayaks of various sizes and exchange between two or more kayaks.
- Turning now descriptively to the drawings, referring to
FIG. 1 , a perspective view of a kayakmotor attachment device 100 attached at a rear of akayak 150 in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention. The kayakmotor attachment device 100 includes anelongated frame 102 to comprise the support upon which all of the elements are attached to fasten amotor 120 to thekayak 150. Theelongated frame 102 may be made out of steel or aluminum to provide a durable yet easy to maneuver support frame. - The
elongated frame 102 attaches to a pair of fishing pole supports 110 a, 110 b. The fishing pole supports 110 a, 110 b are cylindrical bodies that may angularly insert into a pair of receivingholes kayak 150. The fishing pole supports 110 a, 110 b are fastened to theelongated frame 102 with a plurality ofbolts 116. Theelongated frame 102 includes a pair ofslots 104 that run parallel to the body of theelongated frame 102. Theslots 104 receive thebolts 116 from thefishing pole support 110 b. Theslots 104 allow theelongated frame 102 to fasten to the angular fishing pole supports 110 a, 110 b. Also, theslots 104 enable attachment to kayaks 150 of differing sizes or with fishing pole supports 110 positioned at differing widths. On top of the fishing pole supports 110 a, 110 b may be a pair ofcover - At an end of the
elongated frame 102 may be anattachment housing 106 to fasten themotor 120 to theelongated frame 102. Extending from themotor 120 is asupport shaft 122 which is directly secured to theattachment housing 106. Thesupport shaft 122 extends between themotor 120 and apropeller 124 at a bottom portion. Thesupport shaft 122 may rotate within theattachment housing 106 to enable thepropeller 124 to direct trajectory of thekayak 150 as needed and desired by the user. - Referring now to
FIG. 2 a top view of the kayakmotor attachment device 100 is shown in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention. The general parts of thekayak 150 include acockpit 152 to receive the user and a seat 154. Thefishing pole supports 110 are shown without the covers to illustrate their circular opening. Attached to themotor 120 may be asteering handle 126. Thesteering handle 126 enables the user seated in thecockpit 152 to guide and maneuver the support shaft which in turn directs the propeller. - At the rear portion of the
kayak 150 is abattery 156. Thebattery 156 connects to theattachment housing 106 with a pair of wire leads 130. Theattachment housing 106 includes a power source positioned inside theattachment housing 106, where the power source activates and deactivates themotor 120. Alternatively, themotor 120 may be gas powered instead of electrical. - The kayak
motor attachment device 100 allows the user to easily attach theframe 102 andmotor 120 to a standard kayak. Theslots 104 within theelongated frame 102 allow for simple adjustments and adaptability to kayaks of varying sizes. Since the kayakmotor attachment device 100 is adjustable, it may be easily exchanged from one kayak to another as desired by the user. - The foregoing descriptions of specific embodiments of the present invention have been presented for purposes of illustration and description. They are not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the invention to the precise forms disclosed, and obviously many modifications and variations are possible in light of the above teaching. The exemplary embodiment was chosen and described in order to best explain the principles of the invention and its practical application, to thereby enable others skilled in the art to best utilize the invention and various embodiments with various modifications as are suited to the particular use contemplated.
Claims (8)
1. A kayak motor attachment device for fastening a motor to a kayak comprising:
a. an elongated frame, where the elongated frame includes a pair of slots;
b. a pair of fishing pole supports inserted into a pair of receiving holes positioned at a back of the kayak, where the pair of fishing pole supports attach to the elongated frame with a plurality of bolts through the pair of slots;
c. an attachment housing secured to an end of the elongated frame;
d. a support shaft attached to the attachment housing, where the support shaft rotates within the attachment housing to guide a propeller at a bottom end of the support shaft; and
e. a motor attached atop the support shaft to power the propeller.
2. The kayak motor attachment device according to claim 1 , where the pair of fishing pole supports insert at an angle into the receiving holes.
3. The kayak motor attachment device according to claim 1 , where the motor is gas powered.
4. The kayak motor attachment device according to claim 1 , where the attachment housing includes an internal power source to power the motor.
5. The kayak motor attachment device according to claim 4 , where the attachment housing is connected to a battery at a rear portion of the kayak with a pair of wire leads.
6. The kayak motor attachment device according to claim 1 , where the motor includes a steering handle to direct the propeller.
7. The kayak motor attachment device according to claim 1 , where the kayak motor attachment device exchanges between at least two kayaks.
8. The kayak motor attachment device according to claim 1 , where the elongated frame is made from aluminum.
