- FIGS. 1 and 2 Various embodiments disclosed herein provide cabinet systems, such as cabinet system 30 of FIGS. 1 and 2 , with mobile cabinet assemblies 32 , 34 ( FIG. 2 ) that can be pulled out from underneath a stationary countertop 36 of the cabinet system 30 , and moved around to be used in various different functions. Such functions include a kitchen island, a mobile cart, a preparation station, and the like. Although two cabinet assemblies 32 , 34 are illustrated and described, any number of cabinet assemblies 32 , 34 can be employed, such as one cabinet assembly 32 or 34 .

Abstract
Description
- Various embodiments relate to cabinet assemblies and cabinet systems.
- The prior art has provided various stationary cabinet assemblies, as well as modular or mobile cabinet assemblies. Traditional kitchen base cabinetry is typically permanently mounted to walls, flooring, and adjacent cabinets to form a run of cabinetry that is also used to support a countertop.
- According to at least one embodiment, a cabinet assembly is provided with a cabinet body sized to be received under a stationary countertop. A plurality of wheels is mounted to the cabinet body for transportation of the cabinet body. A countertop panel is mounted upon the cabinet body. At least one countertop leaf is provided for generally coplanar extension of the countertop panel when disconnected from the stationary countertop.
- According to at least another embodiment, a cabinet assembly is provided with a cabinet body sized to be received under a stationary countertop. The cabinet body has at least one drawer aperture formed through opposed sides of the cabinet body. A plurality of wheels is mounted to the cabinet body for transportation of the cabinet body. A bidirectional slide is mounted to the cabinet body in the at least one drawer aperture. A drawer is mounted to the bidirectional slide and oriented within the at least one drawer aperture for translation relative to the cabinet body out of either of the opposed sides of the cabinet body.
- According to at least another embodiment, a cabinet system is provided with a stationary cabinet body. A countertop is mounted upon the stationary cabinet body. The countertop extends laterally beyond the stationary cabinet body. A cabinet assembly is provided with a cabinet body sized to be received under the stationary countertop. The cabinet body has at least one drawer aperture formed through opposed sides of the cabinet body. A plurality of wheels is mounted to the cabinet body for transportation of the cabinet body. A bidirectional slide is mounted to the cabinet body in the at least one drawer aperture. A drawer is mounted to the bidirectional slide and oriented within the at least one drawer aperture for translation relative to the cabinet body out of either of the opposed sides of the cabinet body.
- According to at least another embodiment, a cabinet system is provided with a stationary cabinet body adapted to be mounted to an underlying support surface. A countertop is mounted upon the stationary cabinet body. The countertop extends laterally beyond the stationary cabinet body. A longitudinal guide is adapted to be mounted to at least one of the stationary cabinet body, the countertop and the underlying support surface. A mobile cabinet body is sized to be received under the countertop. A plurality of wheels is mounted to the mobile cabinet body for transportation of the cabinet body. At least one of the mobile cabinet body and the plurality of wheels cooperates with the longitudinal track for guiding of the mobile cabinet body during docking and removal of the mobile cabinet body underneath the countertop. The cooperation with the longitudinal guide disengages upon removal of the mobile cabinet body relative to the countertop.
- According to at least another embodiment, a cabinet assembly is provided with a cabinet body sized to be received under a stationary countertop. A front ornamental fascia is mounted to the cabinet body and extends laterally beyond the cabinet body. A plurality of wheels is mounted to the cabinet body for transportation of the cabinet body. A countertop panel is mounted upon the cabinet body. The countertop panel extends laterally beyond the cabinet body. A pair of countertop leaves is each pivotally connected to the cabinet body for generally coplanar extension of the countertop panel in extended positions, and for being concealed beneath the countertop panel and behind the fascia in retracted positions.
- According to at least another embodiment, a cabinet system is provided with a stationary cabinet body adapted to be mounted to an underlying support surface. A countertop is mounted upon the stationary cabinet body. The countertop extends laterally beyond the stationary cabinet body. At least one door is pivotally connected relative to the countertop to cover an open region under the countertop. An inward offset extension of the door creates a visual appearance of a toe-kick so that the at least one door and inward offset extension collectively create a visual appearance of another stationary cabinet body.
- According to at least another embodiment, a cabinet assembly is provided with a cabinet body sized to be received under a stationary countertop. The cabinet body has at least one externally concealed handle. A plurality of wheels is mounted to the cabinet body for transportation of the cabinet body.
- According to at least another embodiment, a cabinet assembly is provided with a cabinet body sized to be received under a stationary countertop. The cabinet body has at least one recess sized to provide clearance for plumbing. A plurality of wheels is mounted to the cabinet body for transportation of the cabinet body.
- According to at least another embodiment, a cabinet system is provided with a stationary cabinet body adapted to be mounted to an underlying support surface. A countertop is mounted upon the stationary cabinet body. The countertop extends laterally beyond the stationary cabinet body. A mobile table is sized to be received under the countertop. A plurality of wheels is mounted to the mobile table for transportation of the mobile table. A mobile cabinet body is sized to be received under the mobile table. A plurality of wheels is mounted to the mobile cabinet body for transportation of the cabinet body.
- According to at least another embodiment, a cabinet system is provided with a stationary cabinet body adapted to be mounted to an underlying support surface. A countertop is mounted upon the stationary cabinet body. The countertop extends laterally beyond the stationary cabinet body. A mobile cabinet body is sized to be received under the countertop. A plurality of wheels is mounted to the mobile cabinet body for transportation of the cabinet body. A foam tray is adapted to be installed under the countertop to provide resistance to the wheels.
- According to at least another embodiment, a cabinet assembly is provided with a cabinet body sized to be received under a stationary countertop. At least one of a drawer and a door is mounted for movement relative to the cabinet body. A plurality of wheels is mounted to the cabinet body for transportation of the cabinet body. A locking mechanism is connected to at least one of the plurality of wheels and the at least one of the drawer and the door. At least one actuatable handle is mounted to the cabinet body in cooperation with the locking mechanism.
- According to at least another embodiment, a cabinet assembly is provided with a cabinet body sized to be received under a stationary countertop. A power storage device is supported by the cabinet body. A plurality of wheels is mounted to the cabinet body for transportation of the cabinet body. An electrical connector is provided on the cabinet body in electrical connection with the power storage device.
- According to at least another embodiment, a cabinet system is provided with a stationary cabinet body. A countertop is mounted upon the stationary cabinet body. The countertop extends laterally beyond the stationary cabinet body. A mobile cabinet assembly is oriented beneath the countertop with an exposed surface that has an ornamental appearance similar to an exposed surface of the stationary cabinet body.

FIG. 23 is a side perspective view of the cabinet system ofFIG. 22 illustrated with a cabinet assembly in an extended position. - As required, detailed embodiments of the present invention are disclosed herein; however, it is to be understood that the disclosed embodiments are merely exemplary of the invention that may be embodied in various and alternative forms. The figures are not necessarily to scale; some features may be exaggerated or minimized to show details of particular components. Therefore, specific structural and functional details disclosed herein are not to be interpreted as limiting, but merely as a representative basis for teaching one skilled in the art to variously employ the present invention.
- Various embodiments disclosed herein provide cabinet systems, such as
cabinet system 30 ofFIGS. 1 and 2 , withmobile cabinet assemblies 32, 34 (FIG. 2 ) that can be pulled out from underneath astationary countertop 36 of thecabinet system 30, and moved around to be used in various different functions. Such functions include a kitchen island, a mobile cart, a preparation station, and the like. Although twocabinet assemblies cabinet assemblies cabinet assembly cabinet assemblies cabinet system 30 with a stationary run of standard cabinetry underneath thecountertop 36 and docked in a home position to function akin to a standard stationary cabinet with drawers. Upon removal of themobile cabinet assemblies stationary cabinet system 30, eachmobile cabinet assembly countertop work surface countertop mobile cabinet assemblies - One of the
cabinet assemblies 32 is illustrated inFIGS. 3 and 4 . Thecabinet assembly 32 is provided with acabinet body 42 that sized to be received under thestationary countertop 36 of thecabinet system 30. A plurality of wheels, such ascasters 44, is mounted to thecabinet body 42 for transportation of thecabinet body 42. Thecountertop 38 includes acountertop panel 38 mounted upon thecabinet body 42. Thecabinet assembly 32 includes a pair of countertop leaves 46, 48, which extend generally coplanar with thecountertop 38 in an extended position ofFIG. 3 . Thecasters 44 are oriented as far laterally outboard as permitted by thecabinet body 42 for stability of thecabinet assembly 32 when disconnected from thecabinet system 30, particularly when theleaves - Referring again to
FIGS. 2 and 3 , thecabinet assembly 32 includes a frontornamental fascia 50 that provides an appearance of a front surface of a conventional stationary cabinet assembly to avoid obfuscate an ornamental appearance of thecabinet system 30, while provide a uniform appearance to thecabinet system 30. Theornamental fascia 50 may be oversized relative to thecabinet body 42 to provide arecess 52 for receipt and concealment of theleaves FIG. 4 . Thecountertop panel 38 also extends laterally beyond thecabinet body 42 to provide a uniform appearance with thefront fascia 50 while concealing theleaves rear fascia 54 may employ similar characteristics for flexibility and modularity of stowing thecabinet assembly 32. - With reference again to
FIGS. 3 and 4 , thecabinet body 42 has adrawer aperture 56 formed through thefront fascia 50 and therear fascia 54. Adrawer 58 is mounted to thecabinet body 42 in thedrawer aperture 56 via a bidirectional drawer slide 60 so that thedrawer 58 can be accessed from either side of thecabinet assembly 42. Therefore, thedrawer 58 of thecabinet assembly 32 can be employed in an outward facing direction when stowed, and can be accessed from either side when removed from thecabinet system 30. Thedrawer 58 may also include a pair ofrecesses drawer 58 for access of thedrawer 58. Likewise, therecesses cabinet body 42 for transportation of thecabinet assembly 32. - The
cabinet body 42 may include a cutout for clearance of plumbing in thecabinet system 30. - A
cabinet system 66 is illustrated is illustrated inFIGS. 5-7 according to another embodiment. Thecabinet system 66 includesstationary cabinet assemblies countertop 72 that extends over thestationary cabinet assemblies open region 74 between thecabinet assemblies doors cabinet system 66 for concealing theopen region 74 and for providing an ornamental appearance of a conventional stationary cabinet system. An inward offsetextension door door corresponding extension doors 76, 78 a toe-kick is not necessary on amobile cabinet assembly 84 retained within theopen region 74. By avoiding placement of a toe-kick on themobile cabinet assembly 84,casters 86 on themobile cabinet assembly 84 can be placed as far outboard as permitted in order to enhance stability of thecabinet assembly 84. Additionally, the faux toe-kick casters 86 of themobile cabinet assembly 84.FIG. 7 illustrates themobile cabinet assembly 84 with aleaf 88 deployed for adding work surface area to acountertop 90. - Another
mobile cabinet assembly 92 is illustrated inFIGS. 8 and 9 . Thecabinet assembly 92 includes acabinet body 94 with atoe kick 96 formed about its lower periphery. Acountertop panel 98 is mounted for translation upon thecabinet body 94 for a centered position and an offset position. In the centered position, thecountertop panel 98 is aligned with thecabinet body 94 as illustrated inFIG. 9 . Acountertop leaf 100 is pivotally connected to thecountertop panel 98. In an offset position of thecountertop panel 98, thecountertop leaf 100 can be extended to a position generally coplanar with thecountertop panel 98 for expanding the countertop work surface as illustrated inFIG. 8 . Thecountertop leaf 100 is pivoted into a stacked position upon thecountertop panel 98 in the centered position ofFIG. 9 for stowing thecabinet assembly 92. -
FIG. 10 illustrates acabinet system 102 according to another embodiment. Thecabinet system 102 includes alongitudinal guide 104 that is adapted to be mounted to an underlying support surface, such askitchen flooring 106. Theguide 104 could be mounted to a stationary cabinet or a countertop of thecabinet system 102. Theguide 104 includes a pair oftracks 108 sized to receivecasters 110 of amobile cabinet assembly 112. Thetracks 108 guide thecasters 110, and consequently themobile cabinet assembly 112 during docking and removal of themobile cabinet assembly 112 into thecabinet system 102. Thecasters 110 disengage from thetracks 108 upon removal of themobile cabinet assembly 112 from thecabinet system 102. Thetracks 108 each include a positioning feature, such as a raisedbump 114 for retaining thecasters 110 in the docked position. Alternatively, a compressible foam tray may be employed for securing thecasters 110 in a stowed position. -
FIG. 11 illustrates amobile cabinet assembly 116 according to another embodiment. Themobile cabinet assembly 116 cooperates with aguide 104 similar to the prior embodiment. Thecabinet assembly 116 includes adrawer 118 mounted to acabinet body 120 for translation relative to thecabinet body 120. Thelongitudinal guide 104 provides a reaction force to themobile cabinet assembly 116 upon removal. The reaction force is greater than a predetermined force required to translate thedrawer 118 relative to themobile cabinet body 120. That way, themobile cabinet assembly 116 does not inadvertently move while opening thedrawer 118. - According to another embodiment, a
handle 122 is provided on thedrawer 118. Alever 124 is mounted inside thehandle 122 for actuation. According to one embodiment, themobile cabinet assembly 112 includes a locking mechanism connected to thecasters 110. Actuation of thelever 124 unlocks thecasters 110 for movement of themobile cabinet assembly 116. - According to another embodiment, the locking mechanism is connected to the
drawer 118. Actuation of thelever 124 unlocks thedrawer 118 for opening thedrawer 118. Without actuation of thelever 124, a user can grasp thehandle 122 and move themobile cabinet assembly 116. - According to yet another embodiment, actuation of the
lever 124 locks thedrawer 118 so that a user can grasp thehandle 122, actuate thelever 124 to lock thedrawer 118, and use thehandle 122 to move themobile cabinet assembly 116. - According to yet another embodiment, the
handle 122 and thelever 124 are provided on a door. - Referring now to
FIG. 12 , acabinet system 126 is illustrated according to another embodiment. Thecabinet system 126 includes a pair ofside rollers 128 for engaging opposed lateral sides of amobile cabinet body 130 for guiding themobile cabinet body 130 into thecabinet system 126. A pair ofdetents 132 is formed into themobile cabinet body 130 at opposed lateral sides corresponding to a docked position of themobile cabinet body 130. - Referring to
FIG. 13 , amobile cabinet assembly 134 is illustrated with ahandle 136 formed in an underside of acountertop 138 for concealing thehandle 136 externally. -
FIG. 14 illustrates acabinet system 140 with an actuatedtrack assembly 142 for receiving astriker 144 on amobile cabinet assembly 146 and translating themobile cabinet assembly 146 to the stowed position. Subsequently, the user may press a deploy button for instructing thetrack assembly 142 to deploy themobile cabinet assembly 146. -
FIG. 15 illustrates anothermobile cabinet assembly 148 with a pair ofcountertop panels cabinet body 154 for an abutting position when closed, and for a spaced apart position with agap 156 between thepanels countertop leaf 158 is sized to be placed within thegap 156 for expanding the countertop surface area. Theleaf 158 may be formed from various materials, such as a cutting stone. Anaperture 160 is provided in thecabinet body 154 for receipt and storage of theleaf 158 or other alternative leafs. - According to another embodiment, a
power storage device 162 is provided in themobile cabinet assembly 148 as illustrated inFIG. 16 . Apower strip 164 is provided on thecabinet assembly 148 for powering accessories that may be employed upon thecabinet assembly 148. Thecabinet assembly 148 may be provided with apower cable 165 for installation into a power outlet in the cabinet system for recharging thepower source 162. Alternatively, connectors may be aligned with a guide system for engagement upon stowing of thecabinet assembly 148. -
FIG. 17 illustrates themobile cabinet assembly 148 with a servingtray 166 for installation into thegap 156. Of course various accessories can be employed within thegap 156. -
FIGS. 18 and 19 illustrate amobile cabinet assembly 168 with apivotal handle 170. Actuation of thehandle 170releases castors 172 and provides thehandle 170 for manually pulling of themobile cabinet assembly 168. -
FIG. 20 illustrates anotherguide 174 that is oriented centrally with a taperedtrack 176 for receipt of afollower 178 on amobile cabinet assembly 180. -
FIG. 21 illustrates acabinet system 182 according to another embodiment. The cabinet system includesstationary cabinets open region 188 between thecabinets countertop 190 extends over thestationary cabinets open region 188. A mobile table 192 is sized to be received under thecountertop 190. A plurality ofcasters 194 are mounted to the mobile table 192 for transportation of the mobile table 192. Amobile cabinet body 196 is sized to be received under the mobile table 192. A plurality ofcasters 198 is mounted to themobile cabinet body 196 for transportation of thecabinet body 196. Thus, multiple modular units can be stored in oneopen region 188 of thecabinet system 182. -
FIGS. 22 and 23 illustrate anothercabinet system 200 with amobile cabinet assembly 202. When installed as illustrated inFIG. 22 , themobile cabinet assembly 202 fits seamlessly under acountertop 204 of thecabinet system 200 presenting an appearance akin to a conventional static cabinet system. It is unknown to the ordinary observer that thecabinet assembly 202 is mobile until thecabinet assembly 202 is extended as inFIG. 23 revealing the concealed features. - While various embodiments are described above, it is not intended that these embodiments describe all possible forms of the invention. Rather, the words used in the specification are words of description rather than limitation, and it is understood that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Additionally, the features of various implementing embodiments may be combined to form further embodiments of the invention.
