  • FIG. 3 is a perspective view of another embodiment of a wearable article of the invention, in the form of an earring.
  • DESCRIPTION
  • The invention and accompanying drawings are discussed below, using reference numerals to identify parts and features, to enable one skilled in the art to practice the present invention. The drawings and descriptions are exemplary of various aspects of the invention and are not intended to limit or narrow the scope of the appended claims.
  • The present invention relates generally to wearable products, which includes products that are commonly worn by an individual as a fashion or design article, including, for example, articles of jewelry, such as bracelets, pendants, finger rings, earrings, body piercing pins and rings, necklaces, as well as hairclips, headbands, watches, belts, belt buckles, and the like.
  • One aspect of the invention include a predesigned wearable article comprising an attachment surface adapted for attachment of an adhesive display sheet and one or more recessed trimming channel defining one or more boundary of the attachment surface. In another embodiment, the trimming channel defines each boundary of the attachment surface of the predesigned wearable article.
  • One embodiment of the invention is shown in FIG. 1, in the form of a bracelet or bangle. Another embodiment of the invention is shown in FIG. 3, in the form of an earring. It is understood that the wearable articles may be in any one of various forms described in the above paragraph, including jewelry or other wearable fashion accessories. As shown in FIG. 1 and FIG. 3, the wearable products of the present invention generally comprise a predesigned wearable article 1 having an attachment surface 2 that is adapted for attachment of an adhesive display sheet (shown separately in FIG. 2) and having one or more recessed trimming channel 3 defining one or more boundary of the attachment surface. FIG. 1 and FIG. 2 also show the sidewalls 4 of the recessed trimming channel 3.
  • In another embodiment, the wearable product of the invention may, optionally, further include an adhesive display sheet 10, as shown in FIG. 2. The adhesive display sheet 10 comprises a display surface 11 opposite an adhesive surface 12. The display sheet serves the function of presenting designs on the display surface 12 and adhering the display sheet to the attachment surface 2 of the predesigned wearable article by means of the adhesive surface 12. The adhesive display sheet 10 is sized to overlay at least a portion of the attachment surface 12 of the predesigned wearable article 1 and to extend beyond at least one boundary defined by a recessed trimming channel 3. When the display sheet is applied to the attachment surface of the wearable article one or more of the edges of the adhesive display sheet extend beyond at least one of the one or more recessed trimming channel. Thus, in some embodiments, one or more edges of the adhesive display sheet extend beyond the edge of one or more recessed trimming channel, requiring that the portions of the display sheet extending beyond the recessed trimming channel be trimmed. In one embodiment of the invention, at least one edge of the adhesive display sheet will extend beyond a recessed trimming channel. By trimming the edges of the laminate sheet extending beyond the recessed trimming channel, the display sheet can be made substantially flush with the edges of the attachment surface, thereby creating an edge of the laminate sheet that is flush with the edge of the attachment surface, which is visually pleasing to the eye. Alternatively, in other embodiments, all of the adhesive display sheet is sized greater than the size of the attachment surface of the wearable article, such that all edges of the adhesive display sheet are trimmed at the edge of the recessed trimming channel, to give the edges of the adhesive display sheet a clean cut appearance. In the event that any portion of the display sheet extends beyond the recessed trimming channel, the trimming channel may be used as a guide to cut and trim that portion of the display sheet extending beyond the recessed trimming channel, whereby the portion of the display sheet that is attached to the attachment surface has a well-defined and clean cut edge defined by the edge of the trimming channel. Thus, in some embodiments, a recessed trimming channel 3 may define only a portion of the boundary of the attachment surface, for example, only one edge, or two edges, or three edges, leaving one or more other edges defined without a recessed trimming channel. In some embodiments, the adhesive display sheet may be sized to overlay at least all of the attachment surface of the predesigned wearable article. In other embodiments, the recessed trimming channel 3 defines each boundary of the attachment surface of the wearable article, such that all boundaries of the attachment surface terminate at a recessed trimming channel. For example, in an embodiment in the form of a cuff style bracelet (where the ends of the bracelet wrap around but do not touch each other), recessed trimming channels may run along the sides of the bracelet to each of the ends, but not along each end. The end of the bracelet would accordingly act as a boundary without a trimming channel, and the display sheet when applied to the attachment surface, may be trimmed using the end of the bracelet as at trimming guide. In the event that the cut edge of the display sheet is not a clean cut or is not perfectly flush with the edge of the display surface, any portion of the display sheet that remains uncut and extending over the recessed trimming channel can be pressed down into the recessed trimming channel, using a fingernail, back of a knife blade, or other pointed object, so as to hide the uncut edge from view.
  • The wearable products of the invention comprise a wearable article having one or more recessed trimming channels for trimming the edges of a display sheet attached to the wearable article. The trimming channels are adapted to enable use of a cutting tool, such as a knife, a razor, or a circular cutting disk, to trim the adhesive display sheet along the edge of the trimming channel. In some embodiments, the wearable products comprise one or more recessed trimming channels comprising side walls substantially perpendicular to the attachment surface of the predesigned wearable product. In other embodiments, the wearable article comprises one or more recessed trimming channels comprising side walls at a non-perpendicular angle to the attachment surface of the predesigned wearable product, for example at an angle greater than 90° (where a recessed channel is valley shaped) or at an angle less than 90° (where an outer edge of the attachment surface overhangs the recessed trimming channel).
  • The trimming channel may be of any convenient depth or width. In some embodiments, the trimming channel may comprise two side walls. In other embodiments, the trimming channel may comprise only one side wall, such that the channel is open opposite the one side wall. In embodiments where the channel has two side walls, the trimming channel may have a width sufficient to accommodate a cutting tool, such as a standard knife edge, a razor blade, or circular blade. Thus, the measurement of the channel will be slightly wider than the width of the cutting tool, so that the cutting tool may cut within the channel. In some embodiments, the trimming channel width measures roughly 1 mm wide and can vary depending on the particular look desired. In other embodiments, the width of the trimming channel may be slightly smaller, for example, approximately 0.9 mm, 0.8 mm, 0.7 mm, 0.6 mm, or 0.5 mm. In other embodiments, the width of the trimming channel may be slightly larger, for example, approximately 1.1 mm, 1.2 mm, 1.3 mm , 1.4 mm, 1.5 mm, 1.6 mm, 1.7 mm, 1.8 mm, 1.9 mm or 2.0 mm wide. The channel is deep enough to allow a cutting tool stay within the channel while cutting along the edge of the channel without slipping out. In some embodiments, the depth of the channel measures approximately 1 mm deep. In other embodiments, the depth of the channel may be small, for example, measuring approximately 0.9 mm, 0.8 mm, 0.7 mm, 0.6 mm or 0.5 mm. In other embodiments, the depth of the channel measures approximately 1.1 mm, 1.2 mm, 1.3 mm, 1.4 mm 1.5 mm, 1.6 mm, 1.7 mm, 1.8 mm, 1.9 mm or 2.0 mm deep. The particular depth and width may, of course, vary from the above values, depending on the particular circumstances, or upon the particular design considerations, including the artistic or aesthetic considerations of the design of the wearable article. The principal functional consideration is that the depth and width be adequate to accommodate a cutting tool for trimming any excess portion of the adhesive display sheet that extends beyond the trimming channel.
  • In some embodiments, the present invention further contemplates an adhesive display sheet, which is attached or adhered to the attachment surface of the wearable article. In some embodiments, the adhesive display sheet may also include a clear coat protector laminate, overlaying the display surface of the display sheet, for protecting the display surface from wear and tear, thereby extending the effective life span of the adhesive laminate sheet.
  • In some embodiments, the adhesive display sheet may be pressure sensitive, so that some degree of pressure acts to secure the adhesive to the attachment surface of the wearable article. In such embodiments, a pressure sensitive adhesive material is used for the adhesive surface. Suitable adhesive materials will conform readily to the attachment surface of the wearable article, and will have sufficiently high tack to prevent the adhesive display sheet from releasing prematurely during normal use. In some embodiments, where it is desirable to change the display sheet and replace it with a display sheet of a different design, the adhesive display sheet may be removably or releasably attached to the attachment surface of the wearable article. In such embodiments, a removable adhesive material will be used for the adhesive surface. In some embodiments, the adhesive display sheet may be heat releasable or heat removable, meaning that the adhesive display sheet can be removed only by or more easily by application of heat, for example, by breathing warm air on the display sheet, rubbing it with a finger or palm of the hand, blowing with a blow dryer on a heat setting, or by placing next to a heat source, until the display sheet is warm and malleable and can be peeled off. In some embodiments, the display sheet can be removed without significant tearing or without leaving adhesive material on the attachment surface of the wearable article.
  • In some embodiments, the adhesive display sheet may be heat curable, meaning that the adhesive surface of the adhesive display sheet can be cured or fixed, removably or permanently, by application of heat, for example, by breathing warm air on the display sheet, rubbing it with a finger or palm of the hand, blowing with a blow dryer on a heat setting, or by placing next to a heat source, until the adhesive undergoes an alteration that renders it sufficiently adhesive to adhere while in use, or sufficiently adhesive to be permanently adhesive. In other embodiments, the adhesive display sheet is permanently attached to the attachment surface of the wearable article.
  • The adhesive display sheet may be comprised of any sheet-like material having a display surface, with an adhesive surface opposite the display surface. Adhesive backings are well known to those skilled in the art, and can be selected, depending on whether a permanent attachment or a temporary attachment is desired. Suitable adhesive materials include acrylic adhesives, rubber based adhesives, silicon adhesives, blended adhesives, etc. The present invention also contemplates the use of wet adhesives that may be applied to the back of the display surface, prepared for attachment to the attachment surface of the wearable article by wetting with water or other solvent, and allowed to dry on the attachment surface.
  • The display surface may comprise printed, etched, holographic designs or molded designs on the surface, or may include other structures, such as rocks, beads, gems, etc. glued or embedded on the display surface.
  • The adhesive display sheet may be constructed of any flexible material, such as paper, leather, vinyl, plastic, metal foil, foam, felt, rubber, cork, fabric, etc. In some embodiments, for example, the adhesive display sheet is comprised of vinyl, which may be printed, etched or molded with a design. Another suitable material includes bi-axially oriented polypropylene (BOPP). BOPP material has good clarity, resistance to UV light, excellent chemical and abrasion resistance, and a smooth surface. The display surface of the adhesive display sheet may be transparent, opaque, colored, lettered, glittered, jeweled, or patterned.
  • In some embodiments, the laminate sheet of the present invention is made of vinyl with a display surface on one side and releasable adhesive surface on the opposite side for attaching the display sheet to the surface of a wearable product. Vinyl sheets can be punched or unpunched films of any different color, design (including writing), thickness, surface finish, or brand name. Vinyl display sheets generally include a display surface, an adhesive surface, and, optionally, a clear coat laminate protector shield over the display surface. In some embodiments, the adhesive display sheet may further comprise a clear coat laminate layer on the outer surface for the purpose of protecting the underlying display surface from wear and tear.
  • Various types and grade of vinyl sheets are known and used in the art. Generally, most vinyl films are made from polyvinylchloride (PVC) polymer. Other ingredients may be added to the PVC, including plasticizers to make the film flexible, pigments to the desired color, and additives to help achieve specific properties such as UV absorbers to improve resistance to ultraviolet radiation, heat stabilizers, fillers and processing aids. Vinyl films can be made by either calendaring or by casting. Cast films, which are known in the industry as premium, high-performance, grade have excellent durability and conformability. The term “cast” refers to the manufacturing process of this type of vinyl. Cast vinyl is typically made by mixing various ingredients in the formulation, including solvents, then pouring or casting onto a moving web known as the casting sheet, and finally processed through a series of ovens to allow evaporation of the solvents. The casting sheet determines the texture of the film. Because cast vinyl is cast on the casting sheet in a relaxed state, this material offers very good dimensional stability, and allows the film to be cast very thin (to about 2 mil or less), which contributes to the conformability of the product. Alternatively, the vinyl sheets used in the present invention may be a calendered vinyl film. Calendered vinyl film is formulated with similar raw PVC materials and other ingredients as cast vinyl, but is processed without solvents, relying instead on heating the PVC material until it reaches a molten state, and then extruding the film through a die and then through a series of calendaring rollers. Calendered films tend to be thicker (usually 3.2 to 3.4 mils) than cast films because of the limitations of the calendaring process. The various components used to make such PVC films, and the processes used to make them, are well known to those skilled in the art, and may be selected according to the quality grade and performance properties desired.
  • In some embodiments, the vinyl used for the laminate sheet is cast vinyl. Cast vinyl is known and used in the industry for premium, high-performance, repositionable, laminate sheets. Cast vinyl generally has a thickness of approximately 2 mil, which has excellent durability and conformability characteristics. In other embodiments, cast vinyl may vary from approximately 1-3 mil in thickness. Premium grade vinyl films include high performance cast vinyl films made of premium quality, flexible, opaque solid color, high gloss, thin, vinyl material. The vinyl film may also include translucent vinyl films, which are made of high performance, flexible, translucent cast vinyl material. Vinyl films may also include metallic cast vinyl films made of premium quality, flexible, opaque solid color, high gloss metallic vinyl material. In another embodiment, the cast vinyl is laminated with a cast laminate layer. An example of suitable cast vinyl includes, but is not limited to, 3M brand 2mil IJ180 ControlTac, which uses a premium cast laminate clear vinyl to laminate the vinyl. Alternatively, another suitable vinyl material is a premium cast vinyl, made by Arlon, DFP 6000XRP 2 mil with cast laminate.
  • In other embodiments, the laminate sheet may comprise a calendered vinyl. Calendered vinyl films are frequently referred to as intermediate films, typically having a thickness of about 4 mm, for short-term or economy use. Calendered vinyl films may comprise a flexible high gloss vinyl material, and may range from approximately 2 mm to 4 mm in thickness. Calendered vinyl is formulated with similar raw materials as cast vinyl, except that no solvents are used. The batch is mixed and heated to a molten state. In another embodiment, the calendered vinyl is laminated with a calendered laminate layer.
