Abstract

Apparatus and system are disclosed for anchoring the kayak to the bottom of a body of shallow water. The apparatus includes a receiver tube attached to the kayak into which a guide sleeve and stake are held vertically. A tether line is attached to the stake at one end and to the kayak at the other locking it in the up position for paddling. The stake drops to anchor the kayak by releasing the tether line using an attachment device at a contact point proximate the seat. Pulling the tether line and re-attaching the attachment device retrieves the anchor and returns it to the locked up position for resuming paddling.

Description

  • This application claims priority to Provisional Patent No. U.S. 61/743,032, titled Stake Out System for Kayaks with a filing date of Aug. 24, 2012. Inventor: John Allen Phillips, Jr.
  • FIELD OF INVENTION
  • This invention relates to a quick release system for anchoring a kayak in shallow water.
  • DESCRIPTION OF USE
  • Kayak fishing is a popular sport, and one of its greatest advantages is the kayak's ability to take the fisherman into water far shallower than any other fishing vessels. Fishing these shallow waters, quickness and stealth are essential for not scaring off the fish. This quick release anchoring system was invented with those needs in mind allowing the kayak fisherman to instantly anchor the kayak to the bottom of a body of shallow water while maintaining visual contact with the fish and not alerting the fish in the surrounding area to one's presence. Additionally, the system is designed for quick and easy retrieval to prevent capsizing or difficult removal.
  • The apparatus and system provide the ability to instantly anchor the kayak by releasing an attachment mechanism to quickly drop the mounted stake into the bottom of a body of shallow water. It then allows for immediate, easy retrieval of the stake by pulling the attachment mechanism and reconnecting it to the kayak to continue paddling
  • The apparatus includes a receiver sheath affixed to the kayak body and a stake mounted inside of this receiver allowed to move up and down freely. The system can be mounted to the interior of the vessel using a scupper hole or to the exterior of the vessel using a bracket attachment. A tether line is attached to the stake that allows for securing the stake in the up position while paddling as well as quickly releasing the stake for immediate anchoring. The stake, the attachment of the tether line, and the receiver mount are all specifically designed to allow for pulling of the tether line for easy, retrieval.

Claims (18)

1. Apparatus for anchoring a kayak to the bottom of a body of water comprised of:
a receiver tube that is mounted to the kayak in a vertical position;
a sleeve inserted inside said receiver tube to provide stability and guidance to the system;
a stake in said sleeve;
a tether line that attaches to said stake on one end and attaches to the kayak at a contact point on the other end with a removable attachment device, affixing it in the up position; the release of this attachment device drops the stake into the bottom of a body of shallow water for anchoring, in the down position; the pulling of the tether line allows for retrieval of the stake and reattachment of the attachment device returns the stake into the up position for resuming paddling.
2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the receiver tube is mounted to the interior of the kayak using a scupper hole.
3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the receiver tube is mounted to the exterior of the kayak using a bracket attachment.
4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the stake is inserted into the mounted receiver tube by a smaller tube connector.
5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the removable and re-attachable contact point is attached to the kayak.
