The present invention relates to paper making machines of the type employing press rolls, and aims to improve generally machines of this type.
More particularly the invention relates to an improved handler for stripping the paper web from the roll, said handler being operative auto matically to strip the tail of the paper web from the press roll and throw it down upon the felt.
Heretofore, in the operation of such machines, manual labor has been required for removing the tail of the web from the press rolls and transferring it to the felt, this operation requiring great skill on the part of the operator and often resulting in a considerable loss of time and damage to the paper. Mechanical strippers have heretofore been proposed for doing this work, but these have not been entirely satisfactory and manual labor is generally resorted to.
My invention aims to improve the above stated conditions and provide a mechanism which will automatically quickly and successfully strip the tail of the web from the press roll before it is carried too high and damages the web, and throw the stripped web down upon the felt, the mechanism being capable of movement out of the path 7 of the swiftly moving paper sheet.
In the accompanying drawings I have illusstrated one preferred embodiment of the invention which has been found to be highly satisfactory in operation.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a plan view of my improved paper handler mechanism illustrated in operative relation to one of the presser rolls of a paper machine;

As is well known, in starting a new web of paper stock between the press rolls of the machine, or in starting a new section of the web after a break therein, a relatively narrow feeding strip or tail is cut from the web on the entering end. This strip or tail must be carefully handled by the workman until the whole width of the web is passing through the rolls. There is a decided tendency for the strip or tail to adhere to and wind upon the upper press roll, preventing the web from being thrown down upon the felt.
The illustrated embodiment of the invention, .as disclosed in the drawings includes a handler v mechanism which may advantageously be mounted on the foot board it! or other suitable support of a paper machine in operative relation to one of the press rolls P between which the paper is pressed in the usual manner.
The handler or stripper mechanism comprises a support or bracket H suitably clamped to the 5 paper machine, as for example, upon the foot board it (see Figs. 1 and 4) and formed with a pivotal mounting l2 for supporting a frame l3 housing a pneumatic or other fluid pressure operated cylinder i4 and piston it, the forward 10 end of the piston rod it being pivotally connected as at ll to a housing l 8 in which is rotatably mounted a driving roll 59. A stripping roll 2t is rotatably mounted in hanger brackets 2! pivoted upon the shaft 22 of the driving roll it, and is is geared to the driving roll l9 as at 23 so that the roll 29 is capable of adjustment circumferentially around the roll KB. The driving roll I 9 is relatively larger than the stripper roll 29 and is adapted to be held in 20 frictional contact with the press roll P by a yielding fluid pressure exerted in the cylinder is behind the piston l5. Thus, as the press roll P rotates in a clockwise direction, it frictionally drives the driving roll 59 in a counter-clockwise 25 direction, which in turn drives the stripper roll 28 in a clockwise direction, at a relatively higher surface speed than the press roll P. As will be apparent from the drawings (Fig. 2) the adjacent surfaces of the press roll P and stripper roll 3O 20 are moving in opposite directions, the surface speed of the stripper roll being relatively greater than that of the press roll P.
Means are provided for adjusting the position of the stripper roll 20 with reference to the press 35 roll P, and therefore adjusting the pressure exerted by the stripper r011 upon the press roll independently of the pressure exerted by the driving roll l9 upon the press roll P. Thus the pressure of the stripper roll upon the press roll 40 is variably controlled according to the thickness and nature of the paper stock, while maintaining a predetermined and uniform frictional driving contact between the driving roll 59 and press roll P. To this end the side of the housing is formed with bearing members 26, through which is slid-ably mounted a link 25 pivotally connected to the lower end of bracket 2!. The link 25 is provided with a head nut 2i and a coil spring 28 surrounds the link between the head nut El and bearing 24, and tends to urge the roll into contact with the press roll P. An adjusting nut 29 threaded upon the link provides means whereby the pressure of the stripper roll upon the press roll P may be variably controlled.
The stripper roll 29 is mounted in the housing I8 preferably below and laterally removed from the driving roll I9 (see Fig. 3) so that the two rolls may occupy their proper operative positions relatively to the press roll without interference. The stripper roll 20 may be suitably keyed to its shaft so as to rotate therewith. The stripper roll may be made of any suitable material, preferably rubber, and advantageously is formed with a plurality of angularly disposed grooves 30 in its peripheral surface, said grooves preferably being of L-shaped cross section. and being angularly disposed as of the herring-bone pattern. These grooves, when the roll is under proper tension, act to provide a positive grip between the wet paper web and the stripping roll and insure a positive stripping of the web from the press roll P. Furthermore, due to the high speed of rotation of the stripper rolls, the grooves 30 act to shear the tail of the web quickly after it has been stripped from the press roll P and prevent it being wound upon the stripper roll.
After the entering edge of the web or tail has been stripped from the press roll P and thrown down upon the conveying felts (not shown) and the web has been started properly through the machine, it is desirable that the stripping or handling mechanism be moved to an inoperative position well out of the path of the swiftly moving web. Accordingly I provide means automatically operative upon release of pressure behind the piston I5 to move the entire stripping and handling mechanism out of operative position and well out of the path of the moving web.
Accordingly the lower end of the housing I8 is connected to the support or bracket I I, by means of a link 35 pivoted as at 36 to the bracket I I and at 3] to the housing I8. The pivoted connection 36 comprises a pivot pin 38 passing through portions of the bracket I I (see Fig. 1), which pin is associated with a coil spring 39 acting to swing the link about the pivot 36 in a counter-clockwise direction. The pivot pin 38 is held against turning by suitable means such as a ratchet 4!! on the end of the pin 38 in engagement with a pawl II on the support I I. Suitable limiting means, such as an adjusting screw 42 engages a stop 43 to prevent the swinging movement of the link 35 in a clockwise direction to a position where the spring would be inoperative to lift the link 35. A similar mechanism is provided at the pivotal joint 31 connecting the link 35 with the housing I8 including an adjusting screw M to limit the swinging movement of the housing I8 relative to the link 35.
In use the invention is mounted upon a suitable part of the paper machine, as for example, the
foot board I9 with the driving and stripping rolls Id and 29 adjacent the upper press roll P to which the paper web or tail has a tendency to adhere. Air or other fluid pressure is admitted into the rear end of the cylinder I6 by means of suitable valve devices (not shown) to move the piston I5 therein to the right (Figs. 12 and 4) and force the driving rollers into frictional engagement with the press roll P. As the press roll rotates in a clockwise direction, the driving roll will be rotated in a counter-clockwise direction at the same surface speed,-but due to its smaller diameter, at a greater R- P. M. The stripping roll being geared to and driven by the driving roll will be rotated in a clockwise direction with adjacent surfaces of the stripping roll and press roll moving in opposite directions, and due to the reduction in the gearing 23 and the reduced diameter of the roll 26, it will be apparent that the surface speed of the friction roll will be greatly in excess of that of the press roll P.
As the entering edge of the paper web or tail passes between the bite of the press rolls P and. adheres to the upper press roll, it will be engaged 5 by the grooves of the stripping roll and stripped from the press roll.
Due to the high speed of rotation of the stripping r011 20 that portion of the web or tail which is gripped by the gripping grooves 30' will 10 quickly be sheared from the remaining portion of the web, and as the adjacent surface of the stripping roll moves downwardly as indicated by the arrows (Fig. 2), the web will be thrown down upon the conveying felts (not shown). or tail will thus properly be directed through the machine.
At this point in the operation of the machine the stripping and handling mechanism is no longer necessary and upon release of pressure 20 behind the piston I5 which may be manually or otherwise controlled by suitable devices (not shown), a coil spring imbedded in the pivot connection 3'I between the housing I8 and link 35 will act to throw the housing away from the press 25 roll in the dotted line position B shown in Fig. 4.
The coil spring 39 surrounding the pivot pin 38 of the pivotal connection 36 then is permitted to operate to swing the link 35 in a counter-clockwise direction, moving the housing to the chain 3'0 line position C shown in Fig. 4 and forcing the piston I5 toward the rear end of the cylinder I4. It is imderstood that the air in said cylinder has been exhausted and in this position the entire handling mechanism is well out of operative po- 35 sition with reference to the press roll and out of the path of the moving paper web.
Advantages of my invention reside in the simplicity of construction and positive operation.
Due to the fact that the stripping roll is driven by the driving roll in frictional engagement with the press roll and piston drive at the proper speed is assured for the stripping roll when the handling mechanism is in operative position. The entire mechanism is held in operative position by 4 the yieldable action of fluid pressure which provides a flexible mounting and prevents injury to the mechanism in the event that any undue thickness or quantity of web should pile up. Furthermore, the invention provides for independent 50 means for adjusting tension of the stripping roll to the press roll. Furthermore the entire mechanism is automatically moved to inoperative position out of the path of the web merely upon release of the air pressure within the cylinder I4. 5
I have illustrated in the drawings and have described in the above description one preferred embodiment of the invention and it is to be under stood that the invention is not restricted to those details but comprehends other constructions 60 within the scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. In combination with a press roll of a paper making machine, of means for stripping the paper web from said roll comprising a rotatable strip- 65 ping device, driving means in frictional engagement with said press roll for rotating said device at a higher speed than the surface speed of the press roll whereby the surface of said stripping device moves in a direction opposite to and at a greater speed than the adjacent moving surface of the press roll.
2. In combination with a press roll of a paper making machine, of means for stripping the paper web from said press roll, driving means for rotating said stripping means, and means for holding said driving means in frictional engagement with said press roll.
3. In combination with a press roll of a paper making machine, of means for stripping the paper web from said press roll, driving means for rotating said stripping means, and yielding means for holding said driving means in frictional engagement with said press roll.
4. In combination with a press roll of a paper making machine, of means for stripping the paper web from said press roll, driving means for rotating said stripping means, and fluid pressure operated means for holding said driving means in frictional engagement with said press roll.
5. In combination with a press roll of a paper making machine, of a stripping roll mounted adjacent said press roll, means for driving said stripping roll from said press roll, said means including a speed increasing drive whereby a surface of said stripping roll adjacent to said press roll will move in a direction opposite to and at a greater speed than the press roll.
6. In combination with a press roll of a paper making machine, of a stripping roll mounted adjacent said press roll, means for driving said stripping roll from said press roll, said means including a speed increasing drive whereby a surface of said stripping roll adjacent to said press roll will move in a direction opposite to and at a greater speed than the press roll, and means for holding said driving means in frictional contact with said press roll.
7. In combination with a press roll of a paper making machine, of a stripping roll mounted adjacent said press roll, means for driving said stripping roll from said press roll, said means including a speed increasing drive whereby a surface of said stripping roll adjacent to said press roll will move in a direction opposite to and at a greater speed than the press roll, and means for variably adjusting the tension of said stripping roll on said press roll.
8. In combination with a press roll of a paper making machine, of a stripping roll mounted adjacent said press roll, means for driving said stripping roll from said press roll, said means including a speed increasing drive whereby a surface of said stripping roll adjacent to said press roll will move in a direction opposite to and at greater speed than the press roll, means for holding said driving means in frictional contact with said press roll, and means for variably regulating the tension of said stripping roll on said pressure independent of said last named means.
9. In combination with a press roll of a paper making machine, of a stripping roll mounted adjacent said press roll, means for driving said stripping roll from said press roll, said means including a speed increasing drive whereby a surface of said stripping roll adjacent to said press roll will move in a direction opposite to and at a greater speed than the press roll, means for holding said driving means in frictional contact with said press roll, and means operative to move said stripping roll out of its normal operative position.
10. In combination with a press roll of a paper making machine, of a stripping roll mounted adjacent said press roll, means for driving said stripping r011 from said press roll, said means including a speed increasing drive whereby a surface of said stripping roll adjacent to said press roll will move in a direction opposite to and at a greater speed than the press roll, means for holding said driving means in frictional contact with said press roll, and means operative automatically upon release of said holding means to move the stripping roll out of its normal operative position.
11. In combination with a press roll of a paper making machine, of a stripping roll mounted adjacent said press roll, means for driving said stripping roll from said press roll, said means including a speed increasing drive whereby a surface of said stripping roll adjacent to said press roll will move in a direction opposite to and at a greater speed than the press roll, means for holding said driving means in frictional contact With said press roll, means for variably regulating the tension of said stripping roll on said press roll independent of said last named means, and means operative automatically upon release of said holding means to move the stripping roll out of its normal operative position.
12. A web stripping device for press rolls of pa- 35 per making machines, comprising a rubber roll, and means for driving said ro-ll directly from and at a greater surface speed than said press roll.
13. A web stripping device for press rolls of paper making machines comprising a rubber roll, means for driving said roll directly from and at a greater surface speed than said press roll, and means for variably adjusting and controlling the tension of said rubber roll against the press roll.
14. A stripping device for press rolls of a paper making machine comprising a rubber roll rotatable adjacent the surface of said press roll, the surface of said roll provided with means adapted for gripping engagement with the paper web.
15. A stripping device for press rolls of a paper making machine comprising a rubber roll rotatable adjacent the surface of said press roll, the surface of said roll provided with one or more angularly disposed grooves adapted to grip the paper web.
16. A stripping device for press rolls of a paper making machine comprising a stripper adapted to cooperate with the surface of a press roll to remove the paper web therefrom, and fluid pressure means for holding said stripping device in operative association with said press roll.
