This invention relates` to devices for delivering paper to printing presses and other apparatus, and has for its object to'provide a new and improved device of this description. The invention has as a further object to provide means for severing the web of the expiring roll after it has been connected with the web of the new roll. 'I'he invention has as a further object to provide means for severing the web of the expiring roll after it has been connected with the new roll, and for quickly and eectively indicating to the operator when the severing is to be accomplished. The invention has other objects which are more particularly pointed out in the accompanying description.
Referring now to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a. view showing a device embodying one form of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged view showing the severing mechanism just before it is actuated; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the mechanism after it has acted to sever the web.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several iigures.
Referring now to the drawings, I have shown a construction where there is a. roll supporting device consisting of a shaft I mounted on a supporting frame 2 and provided at opposite ends thereof with arms 3, between which the rolls of paper are\rotatably mounted.
In the construction illustrated I have shown means for supporting a plurality of rolls of paper. The roll of paper from which paper is being delivered is normally in contact with the belts 4 which are driven in any desired manner so as to secure the proper speed of the web being delivered to the press or other apparatus. In the particular construction shown the belts which engage the roll are moving downwardly. It is of course evident that any other apparatus for engaging the rolls may be utilized. Shortly before the ex" piring roll 5 has completely run out, the new roll 6 is moved around in contact with the belts 4 so as to be set in motion. There are several belts 4 spaced apart, and the new roll 6 has adhesive material on the end of its web, the adhesive material being located between the belts so as not to engage the same. When the new roll 6 is moved into contact with the belts, the expiring roll 5 is moved outwardly, and when the new roll 6 has been brought up to speed, it is moved up against the pasting roller 1, the web 8 of the expiring roll being between the pasting roller and the new roll 6. The pressure of the pasting roller causes the adhesive end of the web of the new roll to be connected with the expiring roll.
The two webs then move lup together into the press.
A severing device is arranged to sever the web 8 of the expiring roll which is operated by the operator of the apparatus. This severing device is preferably set into operation by an electromagnetic device 9 which is actuated by a switch or push button II) controlled by the operator. In order that the operator may know just when to push this push button and sever the web, there is provided a light emitting device II, which is preferably placed close to the web 8 running to the press and in a position where this web will be between the light emitting device II and the operator when he is in position to operate the switch I0. This light device may be of any suitable form, and I prefer to arrange it Iso that it will direct light on the` web at different points crosswise thereof, and while'a single light may be used, I prefer to provide a plurality of lights I2, and to have these lights enclosed in a casing I3 which may be of any suitable construction and which is provided with slots or openings I4 at intervals therealong, these openings beingopposite the lights I2. 'I'he lights may be electric lights and may be supplied with current by the wires I5. When the time for changing the delivery of the paper from the expiring roll to the new roll approaches, the operator stands at the push button I0 and watches the web as it passes the light emitting device. As soon as the paster is made, that is the web of the new roll is connected with the web of the expiring roll, the two webs forming a double thickness of paper, pass in front of the light emitting device and the operator at I0 instantly notices the difference in the light showing through. He then knows that the two webs have been connected together and he operates the switch lIll to actuate the severing device to sever the web of the expiring roll.
Any suitable web severing device may be used, and I have illustrated a simple form wherein the severing blade I6 'drops by gravity or by a spring, or both, so as to sever the web. It is released by the electromagnetic device 9, which is actuated by the operator closing the switch I0. The severing device may be returned to its initial position by hand or by any other desired mechanism or means. This severing device may be reset instantly; if desired, or at any time prior to the time when the change of rolls is to occur.
The light emitting device is preferably arranged so-that the light which it directs on the web can be seen through the web by the operator when he is in position to cause the severing device to be actuated. The lighting device is preferably arranged so as to throw light on the web of the expiring roll for a considerable distance along the length thereof so that there will be a considerably lighted area. I
When the web of the new roll is connected to the web of the expiring roll, the connected end of the new roll moves along this lighted area and nms 1t, starting from the bottom and moving up to the top. 'I'he operator can see this vdim moving area, as it were, moving upwardly and this indicates to him that the two webs have been connected together and he can then operate the severing device. The bottom of thelighted area is preferably placed low so that no appreciable time is lost in the connected end of the new web beginning the dimming operation of the lighted area. By means of this invention there is indicated to the operator the connection of the web of the new roll with the web of theexpiring roll practically as soon as the connection is made, thus permitting him to sever the web of the expiring roll very quickly after the web oi' the new roll has been connected therewith, thus shortening the length of the double web. This reduces the wastage of the papers.
I claim: I
l. A device for delivering paper to printing presses, comprising a yroll support, a plurality of rolls carried thereby, one the new roll and one the expiring roll, the web of the expiring roll running to the press, means for connecting the web of the expiring roll with the web of the new roll so that the two Webs overlap and run together to the press, a light emitting device on one side of the web running to the press which directs light on the web, a web severing device, a controlling device on the other side of the web running to the press, the light emitting device indicating to the operator the overlapping webs so that he can operate the controlling device to sever the web of the expiring roll.
2. A device for delivering paper to printing presses, comprising a roll support, a plurality of rolls carried thereby, means for connecting the web of the expiring roll with the web of a new roll, a severing device for severing the web of the expiring roll, a light emitting device which directs light on the web running to the press, controlling means for the severing device, the light emitting device in cooperation with the web, indicating to the operator when the controlling device should be operated. i li 3. A device for delivering paper to printing presses, comprising a roll support, a plurality of rolls carried thereby, means for connecting the web of the expiring roll with the web of a new roll, a severing device for severing the web of the expiring roll, a light emitting device which directs light on the web running to the press, controlling means for the severing device, the light emittting device and controlling means being on opposite sides of the web means associated with the web of the expiring roll, after it has been connected with the web of the new roll, for indicating to the operator, when the connecting point reaches said light emitting device, that the connection has been made.
4. A device for delivering paper to printing presses, comprising a roll support, a plurality of rolls carried thereby, means for connecting the web of the expiring roll with the web of the new roll to form a double web running to the press, a light emitting device on one side of the web running to the press which directs light thereon, the double web dimming the light so that the presence of the connection between the two rolls is discernible to the operator so he can sever the web of the kexpiring roll.

A device for delivering paper to printing presses, comprising a roll support, an expiring roll of paper carried thereby and having a web leading to the press, a light emitting device which directs light longitudinally along said web for a considerable distance so as to provide an extended lighted area, a second roll of paper carried by said support, means for connecting the web oi' the second roll of paper with the web of the expiring roll to form a double web leading to the press, said double web as it passes through the lighted area dimming said lighted area from the bottom toward the top thereof so that the presence of the double web is discernible.

A device for delivering paper to printing presses, comprising a roll support, an expiring roll of paper carried thereby and having a web leading to the press, a light emitting device which directs-light longitudinally along said web for a considerable distance so as to provide an extended lighted area, a second roll of paper carried by said support, means for connecting the web of the second roll of paper with the web of the expiring roll to form a double web leading to the press, said double web as it passesfthrough the lighted area dimming said lighted area from the bottom toward the top thereof so that the presence of the double web is discernible, and means for severing the web of the expiring roll whereby 'an indication is given to the operator by the dimming of the light shining through the web that it is time for severing Vthe web of the expiring roll.

A device for delivering paper to printing presses, comprising a roll support, an expiring roll carried thereby having a web leading to the press, a second roll of paper carried by said roll support, means for connecting the web of the expiring roll Ywith the web of the new roll, a severing device for severing the web of the expiring roll without stopping the delivery to the press of the web of the second roll, and a lighting device for indicating when the severing device should be actuated to insure the continued delivery of the paper to the press.
8. A device for delivering paper to printing presses, comprising a roll support, an expiring roll carried thereby having a web leading to the press, a lighting device associated with said web, a second roll of paper carried by said roll support, the `web of the new roll being connected to the web of the expiring roll in changing the delivery of the paper from theexpiring roll to the new roll, and means for dimming said light passing through the web when the web of the new roll is connected to the web of the expiring roll so as to indicate that the connection has been made.

A device for delivering paper to printing presses, comprising a roll support, a. plurality of rolls of paper carried thereb'y, one being the expiring roll and the other the new roll, a series of belts into engagement with which said rolls are successively moved, means for connecting the web of the expiring roll with the web of the new roll, a series of lights opposed to the web of the expiring roll, the web of the expiring roll being between said lights and said belts, said lights being located intermediate the said belts and opposite the spaces between them and adapted to throw light on the web running to the press, the double web produced by connecting the two webs together dimming said lights as seen by the operator.
