UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. E. SEVEY AND PHILIP C. MANZ, OF NEW ORLEANS, LA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-BAND TIGHTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,36l, dated March 19, 1878; application filed October 29, 1877 To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM S. E. SEvEY and PHILIP G. MANZ, residents of the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bale-Bandlighteners; and we do hereby declare the following to bc a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to the production of a new and improved bale-band tightener, in connection with which any ordinary open or slotted tie-plate or buckle may be used for securing the ends of bands after the same have been drawn tightly around bales of cotton or other products.
On the drawing, A represents the upper, and B the lower, platens of a press. C is a bale under pressure between the two, and D the bands by which the said bale is designed'to be secured. E are tie-plates or buckles, which are attached, in the usual manner, to the upper or hanging ends of the bands.
Our apparatus for pulling in the slack, and thereby tightening the bands, consists of a main bar, F, the lower end of which is provided with a series of side slots, g, for engaging the free end of a band, the same having been rst passed through the hanging tie-plate, as shown.
To the above bar F is secured a single or double curved plate, h, to which is pivoted, as at i, a lever, K, having a clamp, Z, suspended from its inner end by means of a chain, m, the said clamp provided with a side opening, n, and offsets o, so that it may be enabled to take hold of a band at a point near the lower platen, as shown.
The upper portion of the bar F is slotted, as at P, in order to permit of its sliding freely up and down on a bolt, q, which connects the lower ends of a pair of arms, r r', that spring from a sleeve, s, which is loosely tted on a horizontal rod, t, the latter supported by any suitable means in front or rear of the upper platen, so that the apparatus may be slippedl back and forth on the said rod, thus enabling the operator to move it from band to band as the tying process is being accomplished.
In the operation of our invention the free ends of the bands are iirst run through the openings of the tie-plates. The apparatus is next brought in front of one of the bands, and then raised, so that the aforesaid end of the band may be slipped sidewise into one of the slots g of the bar F, the said slot for this pur pose being held close to the lower edge of the tie-plate. The handle of the lever K is next raised by pulling down the clamp Z until it has engaged the aforesaid band bya side movement at a point as near the lower platen as can possibly be effected. Power is then applied to the handle of the lever, by which means the clamp lis made to tighten the band around the bale, while at the same time the bar, bya downward movement, draws the slack through the tie-plate. If this does not suiiciently tighten the band, the clamps may be made to take a fresh hold, and the operation repeated, though for all practical purposes one downward stroke of the lever will be amply sufficient.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The lever K, furnished with suspended clasp l, in combination with the bar F, provided with side slots g and curved plates or fulcrum h, as described, and for the purpose WM. S. E. SEVEY. P. C. MANZ.
