1t is customary in automotive 'manufacture to provide thelock for the door of an automobile in the handle, which is used for withdrawing lthe latch bolt from position. The handle of an automobilel is usually of such construction that a lengthof gas pipe may be easily positioned over the handle to increase the leverage applied and this device has been frequently used by persons breaking into automobiles f or twistingthe handle from position and in the handles usually` used withflocks mounted in the hub of the handle the. twisting off of the handle so destroys the lock as to permit an unauthorized person to enter the automobile `so treated; and. in order to prevent this, I have provided a construction which when` locked will permit the handle to be forced thru a complete revolution in either direction without injury to` the lock or the breaking thereof; and the following is a detailed description of )the preferred embodiment of this invention illustrating the preferred means by which Vthese advantageous results may be .accomplished:- r Y With reference to the drawings, 25 designates a portion o fl an automobile door having a latch bolt26 which is secured to a plate 2l reciprocably mounted upon a pin 23 Supported from the U.- shapedframe .29,
` `This platevZ'l and bolt 26 are forced in one direction by means of a coiled spring 30 and areV more particularly in Fig. 9, has a square end 61 1| extending therefrom and with a slot 12 proating position is located in the slot 69 in such a forced in the other direction by means of a U- shaped yoke 3| engaging the edge of the plate 21 at 32. This yoke has a pair of legs 34 and 36 connected by a bridge portion 33, its leg 36 is rotatably supported in the portion 31 of the frame 29 which is forced inwardly, as illustrated. The leg 34 is provided with a bushing 34ab which is locked to the leg and is rotatably mounted in another portion of the U-shaped frame 29. 'I'his bushing has a square hole 35 therein thru which the latch bolt operating member shown in Fig. 9 extends.
An escutcheon 38 is secured to the outer surface of the portion of the door 25 by means of pins 39 extending thru the surface plate 25 of the door and also thru the frame 29 where it is locked in place by means of Wedges 49 extending thru openings 4| in the pins 39. These wedges may be connected together by a bridge piece 42, as illustrated in modified view in Fig. 24. These wedges are also supported in the openings 43 in the frame, which maintain the wedges in place for securing the escutcheon in the desired position This escutcheon is provided with an internal bore 44 which is tapered as at 45, and in which there is positioned a sleeve member 46 which has a shell 41 secured at one end thereof provided With a tapered surface 48 to fit the taper 45 -in the bore of the escutcheon. These tapered survide a shoulder 59 by means of a reduced por-tion 51 having a projection 55 extending therefrom and a recess or slot 56 therein. This hub has a bore 58 extending therethrough to receive and 'bear upon the sleeve 46 and is freely rotatable thereabou-t. The shoulder 59 abuts against the end of the escutcheon 68, and the reduced portion 51 extends inwardly from the end of the escutcheon and encircles the sleeve 48 While the projection 55 extends thru a slot 6| in the shell ently described. The handle is prevented from moving axially withreference to the sleeve i6 by reasonof the locking wire 62 which is inserted "thru an opening 63 in the hub of the handle to seat within the half rounded registering grooves 64 in the hub of the handle and 65 in the outer surface of the sleeve 46.
The latch bolt operating member 66, as shown engaging the square opening 35 in the bushing 34a, while its inner larger end 68 is cylindrical in form and provided with a dove-tailed slot 69 in which there is mounted a pawl 1|) having a tooth vided therein. The latch bolt operating member is rotatably supported by the reduced circular por- -tion 'I3 thereof bearing in the opening 14 in the retaining plate A pawl 10 in its normal operposition as to .be engaged by the projection 55 of the hub of the handle so that as the handle is turned the latch bolt will be Withdrawn thru .mi the mechanism above described. The pawl 18` is of dovetailed formation corresponding with the shape of the slot 69 for the convenience of assembly of the parts in positioning the latch bolt operating member in its desired position in the escutcheon.
The sleeve member 46 is provided with a pin which extends into the slot 12 of the pawl and is located at one side of the central axis of rotation of the sleeve 46. This sleeve 46 is also provided with a laterally extending opening 16 in which there is located a lock bolt 11 which may extend outwardly into the recess 56 in the hub of the handle when this recess is in registry with the slot 16 in the sleeve. The sleeve 46 is also provided with a bore 18 connecting with the opening 16 and a larger bore 19 communicating therewi-th in which there is located a lock plug 88, which has an olf center protuberance 8|. Connection is had between the lock plug and lock bolt by an adapter 82 provided with an offset pin 83 to fit within a slot 84 in the lock bolt 11 so that by turning the lock plug 88 the locking bolt may be moved thru the adapter into position-to lock the hub land sleeve together or may be retracted by turning in the opposite direction to prevent relative rotation of the hub and sleeve.
The adapter merely serves as a means for causing movement of the lock plug tobe transmitted.- to the bolt-and may be of diierent shapes for per-- mitting lock plugs of different varieties to be used in connection with the movement of the bolt 0f this invention to control its position. A spring 84 may be used to prevent rattle or undue movement of the adapter.
The lock plug 88 is heldin the bore 19 by means of a spring pressed retaining member 85 fitting. within the slot 86 in the bore 19 of sleeve 46. The ange 81 of the key plug fits ilush with the end 88 of the handle by reason of the stepped relation 89 1n the bore of the handle to receive aV correspondingly shaped step 99 in the end of the sleeve 46, by which arrangement lthe lock iits flush with the outer end of the handle to preventl tampering with the same by unauthorized persons. working position against rotation by reason of a recess 9| therein in which there is a pin 92 forced outwardly by a spring 93, which pin fits within the notch 94 in the escutcheon to be under tension against rotation when in the position usual for driving.
Operation In operation, Fig. 15 illustrates the position of the handle, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, in which position the locking bolt 11 is in unlocked position, as illustrated in Fig. 15 and the paWl 10 is in a position to be engaged by the projection 55 so that rotating the handle by forcing vits free end down, as illustrated by the arrow in Fig. 20, causes the latch bolt operating member 66 to be rotated, the U-shaped yoke 33 operated, and the plate 21 and the latch bolt 26 withdrawn.
If it is desired to lock the door against unauthorized entry, the handle 53 will be raised to a predetermined position which I have here shown in vertical position with the projection 55 against the end of the slot 6| in the shell 41, in which position the recess 55 and the slot 16 will be in registry and movementv of the barrel lock will cause the locking bolt thru the adapter to be moved into the recess 56, as shown in Fig. 1'7, so that .the hub of the handle and the sleeve 46 will be locked together to rotate as a unit in either direction. The .movement of the handle when in locked position causes the tapered surface d3 of the shell and th-e tapered surface l5 in the escutcheon to move one relative to the other and by reason of the spring 59 and this long bearing surface considerable friction is interposed against the force required for this movement which and by reason of this friction the handle will be maintained in any position to which it may be left when such force is no longer applied.
The advantageous arrangement of this construction enables the entire lock assembly and operating mechanism to be all assembled in the escutcheon as a unit and the escutcheon then placed into the door as the last part of the assembly and secured therein by the wedges heretoiore described. By this means the lock handle and escutcheon need not be handled separately at the point oi assembly of these parts in the door and no special tools are required for securing it in the door. Y
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, toe invention being dei'ined and limited only by the terms oi' the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a locking device, means for reciprocating a latch bolt, an escutcheon, a sleeve having a shell mounted in said escutcheon, said shell having a slot therein., a handle having a projecting portion extending thru said slot and engaging a portion of said means for operating said latch bolt.
2. In combination, a latch bolt, mechanism thru which said latch bolt is moved, including a pawl, a handle having a hub, a portion of which engages said pawl to operate said latch bolt, a sleeve member for withdrawing said pawl from the path of movement of said hub portion, and means for locking said hub to said sleeve member in a certain position, whereby movement of said handle from said inoperative locked position will withdraw said pawl prior to the hub portion engaging therewith.
3. In combination, a latch bolt, mechanism thru which said latch bolt is moved, including a pawl, a handle having a hub, a portion of which engages said pawl to operate said latch bolt, a sleeve for withdrawing said pawl from the path of movement of said hub portion, and means for locking position, whereby movement oil saidA handle: will withdraw said. pawl' prior to. the hub: portion. engaging therewith.
4. In alocking device, means for reciprocating a. latch. bolt, said means including a movable member having an eccentrically mounted pin. thereon, a handle, means for selectively connecting said handle and member, a rotatable memer provided with a slot therein, a pawl in said slot movable by` said eccentrically mountedpin upon rotation of said handle when connected to saidf movable member to be selectively positioned for engagement with a portion of said handle to rotate said rotatable member. i i
5. In a locking device, a iirst, second .nd third rotatable members, mechanism for connecting said members together, comprising a pin secured to the second member, a pawl engaged by saidpin and movably mounted on the third membe. said second. member selectively moving said pawlI by saldi pin in or out of engagement with the rst member.
6. In a locking device, a handle member, a sleeve member and a latch bolt operating member, and means for selectively connecting the handle member to either of said other two members for rotation with said handle relative to the unconnected member.
7. In combination, a latch bolt, a latch bolt operating member connected to said latch bolt to withdraw said latch bolt, a pawl slidably mounted in said member, and having a slot therein, an escutcheon, a handle having a hub with a recess therein rotatably mounted in said escutcheon, a projection on said hub for engaging said pawl to cause withdrawal of said latch bolt, a sleeve member in said hub, a pin on said sleeve at one side of the rotating axis thereof extending into said slot in said pawl, a locking bolt in said sleeve and a lock plug in said sleeve to move said locking bolt into said recess in the hub when in registry therewith to secure the sleeve and hub together, said relative location of securing being such that movement of the handle when soY secured to the sleeve will cause the pawl to be withdrawn by the handle from the path or" movement of said projection on said hub, whereby said latch bolt operating nember is unaffected.
8. Ina locking device, an escutcheon having a bore provided witha tapered surface, a sleeve having a shell provided with a. tapered surface, a handle, provided with a hub encasing said sleeve, means for selectively locking said hub to said sleeve, and yielding means for urging said tapered surfaces into frictional engagement to prevent free movement of the'handle when said hub and sleeve are locked to rotate together.
9. In a locking device, means for reciprocating a latch bolt, said means including a pawl, an escutcheon, a sleeve having a shell mounted in said escutcheon, said shell having a slot therein, a handle having a projecting portion extending through said slot to engage said pawl for operating said latch bolt.
10. In alocking device, means for reciprocating a latch bolt, said means including a rotatable rotating said rotatable member.

In a locking device, means for reciprocating a latch bolt comprising a rotatable member said hub to said sleeve member' in antinoperative IQL having a paWl movably mounted thereon, an escutcheon, a sleeve mounted in said escutcheon, said sleeve being provided with a pin and a shell, said shell having a slot therein, a handle having a projecting portion extending through said slot for engaging said pawl, said paWl being movable by said pin.
12. In a locking device, a rotatable member for actuating a latch bolt, a paWl movably connected to said member, a rotatable handle, an element connected with said handle adapted to operatively engage said pawl, a lock device, and means for moving said pawl upon rotation of said handle preventing engagement of said pawl and said element upon locking of said lock device.
13. In a locking handle arrangement, a rotatable member for actuating a latch bolt, a rotatable handle having an engaging element, a movable engaging element on said rotatable member, means controlling the movement of said movable element to normally position said movable element in the path of the handle element, and means locking the handle to said positioning means for simultaneous movement for moving the movable element out of the path of the handle element.
14. In a locking device, a rotatable element, two additional rotatable elements, one of said additional elements being operatively connected to a latch mechanism, and lock means manually operable to selectively connect said rst rotatable element With either of said additional rotatable elements.
l5. In a locking handle arrangement, a rotatable member for actuating a latch bolt, a rotatable handle, elements respectively connected to said handle and said member and adapted to operatively engage upon rotation of said handle, said member element being slidable, a lock device, means for sliding said slidable element in engaging position upon movement of said handle when said lock device is unlocked, and means for sliding the slidable element to non-engaging position upon movement of said handle when said lock device is locked.
