Abstract

A system that includes a family of base bags that can accept customizable decorative and/or functional outer panels. Each outer panel may change the aesthetic and appearance of the base bag. The complete bag may comprise a base bag and one or more panels that are affixed to a portion of the outer surface of the base bag. The panels may have fastening elements that are positioned in the same locations, allowing the panel elements to be affixed to all of the different base bags individually. Each bag can be affixed with one or more panels depending on the style of bag. Each bag has fasteners that may mate with corresponding panel fasteners.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention concerns carrying bags, and a system of carrying bags having interchangeable decorative and/or functional panels. More specifically, some embodiments of the present invention pertain to a family of base bags, including but not limited to handbags lunchboxes, technology cases and backpacks, with the ability to attach decorative and/or functional outer panels and interchange those similarly-sized panels between each of the different base bags.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Handbags, purses, backpacks, totes, and other types of bags meant for carrying personal items typically have a single design and are not customizable or interchangeable. A typical handbag, lunchbox, technology case or backpack is used “as is” with no option for the ability to customize the bag by attaching outer panels to change the outward appearance of the bag or otherwise change the style of the bag with customizable elements.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

In some aspects, the invention concerns a novel and unique system and method of customizing a family of base bags. An exemplary bag according to the present invention includes a base bag and one or more panels (or covers) that can be affixed to each the plurality of base bags in the system. Conventional bag collections or lines do not allow for panels to be interchanged between different styles of base bags. The present invention includes a system of similarly sized or same-sized attachable and interchangeable panels that can be affixed to all of the base bags individually. The panels may have decorative and/or functional features which may be customized by the user.
It is to be appreciated that the aesthetic appearance of the base bags in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention (including but not limited to handbags, lunchboxes, technology cases, and backpacks) can advantageously be customized through the interchanging of panels, with a single panel able to fit the entire family of base bags. Any panel can be attached to any of the base bags since the fixation points are positioned in similar patterns or the same distances from each other. It should also be appreciated that the panels may have functional features (e.g., a plastic sleeve for displaying a picture or drawing, electronic devices, etc.) that may be combined with the decorative features of the panels.
In some non-limiting embodiments, the present invention relates to a system including at least two base bags, each base bag having an inner cavity for receiving items therein and a plurality of fastening elements on an outside surface thereof in a first pattern, and a plurality of outer panels each having a first side and a second side, the first side having a plurality of fastening elements thereon in a second pattern that is complementary to the first pattern, wherein engagement of the outer panel fastening elements to the fastening elements on an outside surface of the base bags attaches the outer panels to the base bag. Non-limiting examples of the base bag include handbags, tote bags, clutch cases, lunchboxes, technology cases, backpacks, wallets, and other common bags for carrying personal items. Non-limiting examples of fastening elements include snaps, buttons, fabric hook-and-loop fasteners, magnets, hooks, eyes, loopholes, eyelets, eyeholes, chains, chain links, knots, knotholes, zippers, pegs, grommets, and/or ribbons, and combinations thereof.
In additional non-limiting embodiments, the present invention relates to a system of customizable bags and interchangeable panels including a plurality of bags each having a universal pattern of fasteners on at least one outer surface thereof, and a plurality of panels each having the universal pattern of fasteners thereon, wherein the fasteners on each of the panels are operable to attach the panel to each of the plurality of bags, and the plurality of panels may have various decorative and functional features. In some non-limiting embodiments, some of the plurality of base bags may have multiple outer surfaces to which the panels can be attached.
In further non-limiting embodiments, the present invention relates to a method of customizing a bag, comprising selecting a first panel from a plurality of panels having various decorative and functional features, each of the plurality of panels having fasteners in a universal pattern; and attaching the first panel to a base bag selected from a plurality of base bags, each having fasteners in the universal pattern on at least one outer surface, wherein attaching the first panel comprises engaging the fasteners of the first panel with the fasteners of the base bag, and the fasteners of the plurality of panels are complementary to the fasteners of the plurality of base bags.
These and other objects, advantages and features of the invention, together with the organization and manner of operation thereof, will become apparent from the following detailed description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein like elements have like numerals throughout the several drawings described herein.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

The invention, in its various aspects, will be explained in greater detail below. While the invention will be described in conjunction with several exemplary embodiments, the exemplary embodiments themselves do not limit the scope of the invention. Similarly, the exemplary embodiments as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where like elements have like numerals, do not limit the scope of the exemplary embodiments and/or invention. Rather the invention, as defined by the claims, may cover alternatives, modifications, and/or equivalents of the exemplary embodiments.
Base Bags
In some embodiments, the system can include a plurality of styles and/or types of base bags. For example, and without limitation, the base bag may be a clutch case, a handbag, a tote bag, a technology case, a lunch box, a wallet, or a backpack. In some implementations, the base bag can be formed of flexible or semi-rigid material. For example, and without limitation, the base bag can be formed of denim or cloth. However, it is to be appreciated that other materials are contemplated in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention. For example, and without limitation, the base bag may be formed of leather, vinyl, linen, canvas, polyester, rayon, lastex, acrylic, nylon, wool, hemp, jute, ramie, elastane (e,g, spandex), silk, pleather, and combinations thereof. In some implementations, when the base bag is formed of flexible or semi-rigid material, the base bag may have rigidity members that may be formed from cardboard, metal, foam, composite materials (e.g., foam composite), plastic panels, or combinations thereof, and that can be inserted between fabric layers and forming walls of the base bag.
In some other non-limiting implementations, the base bag can be formed of rigid material. For example, and without limitation, the base bag can be formed of rigid plastic, cardboard, foam, composite materials (e.g., foam composite), wood, metal, and combinations thereof. As an example and without limiting the invention, the base bag may be a rigid technology case for protecting a laptop or tablet having rigid plastic walls. However, it is to be appreciated that other materials are contemplated in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention.
The base bags may have one or more sides having fasteners embedded therein or attached thereto. Without limiting the invention, purses, handbags, totes, and lunch boxes may have opposing sides that each have fasteners thereon. As a non-limiting example, other types of bags, such as a backpack, may have fasteners on only one side. The fasteners may be arranged in a pattern (e.g., a rectangular pattern) that mirrors a pattern of fasteners in decorative outer panels that are to be attached to the one or more sides of the base bags.
Decorative Outer Panels
In some embodiments, the system can include a plurality of decorative outer panels. As discussed herein, the panels can be detachably affixed to an outside surface of the base bags and provide for customized appearances of the bags. In preferred embodiments, a panel can be formed of rigid, semi-rigid, flexible, or semi-flexible material. For example, and without limitation, a panel can be formed of denim or cloth. It is to be appreciated that systems in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention can include a panel with varying aesthetic features on the outer exposed side of the panel, for example and without limitation, sequins, rhinestones, semi-precious stones, garland, different patterns, different materials (such as cotton, silk, cashmere, plastic, acrylic, corduroy, felt, elastane (e,g, spandex), suede, velvet, paper, corkboard, fur, faux fur, leather, suede, wool, linen, hemp, ramie, jute, lastex, nylon, polyester, rayon, pleather, feathers, mesh, wood, chain link, and combinations thereof), and combinations thereof.
In some implementations, a panel can have an outer surface comprising a solid material (e.g., a white board, a monochromatic fabric, a metal, etc.). The solid surface may permit a user to create customized drawings or text by means of using a permanent pen, highlighter, crayon, marker, or other writing implements. For example, and without limitation, a panel can include a dry erase board permitting a user to decorate the panel with markers. In other non-limiting implementations, a panel may be magnetic, allowing different decorative magnets to be added thereto. In further non-limiting implementations, a panel can include an outer sleeve or pouch through which a printed drawing, photograph, sign, symbol, award, artwork, and the like can be inserted. It is to be appreciated that in such implementations, a user can print their own decorative drawings or artwork (for example by using a personal computer and printer), and insert the personal decorative work in the sleeve or pouch. In other non-limiting embodiments, the sleeve or pouch may contain a kit for different activities with special compartments and elements therein. As an example and without limiting the invention, the pouch may comprise a make-up kit with a mirror fixed therein and special slots for brushes, lipstick, etc. In some other non-limiting embodiments, the pouch may comprise games, such as connect-the-dot games, doll dress-up games, and mazes. It is to be appreciated that in some of such embodiments, the sleeve can be opaque and impermeable permitting a user to write on the sleeve. In some other of such embodiments, a ferromagnetic game board may be inserted in the sleeve and magnetic game pieces can be placed on the outside of the sleeve for magnetic engagement there through to the game board.
In some implementations, a panel can have an outer surface comprising a canvas to enable a user to decorate the panel with a user's art. In some examples, and without limitation, the canvas can be decorated with writing implements (e.g., crayons, markers, pens, etc.) paint, iron-on decals, sewn monograms, sewn badges, autographs, beads, mosaic inlays, lapel pins, buttons, laminate, metal, glass, clocks, shells, basket weave, laminates, embroidery, needlework, cross stitching, crochet, knitting, stencils, maps, tie-dye, airbrushed art, silkscreen collages, and combinations thereof. It is to be appreciated that other user configured decorations and artwork are contemplated in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention. In some implementations, advertisements, or displays for licensed and unlicensed designs, patterns and/or logos, can be included on the outer surface of the panels. In other non-limiting embodiments, the outer surface of the panel may be covered with a fabric having fine loops and patches having fine plastic hooks may be engaged with the loops of in the outer surface of the panel (e.g., Velcro patches). For example, and without limitation, patches bearing logos, sports teams, slogans, etc. may be easily detachably engaged to the outer surface of the panel. In still other non-limiting embodiments, the panel may have hooks, snap buttons, or other fasteners on its outer surface for attaching charms, decorative chains, pinwheels, flowers, bows, figurines, dolls (e.g., stuffed dolls or animals), and other decorative items.
In some non-limiting embodiments, other items may be engaged with the fasteners on the base bag. For example, decorative elements such as decorative button caps, charms, bows, pinwheels, figurines, etc. may be attached to one or more of the fasteners on the base bag. The base bag may have female or male snap button fasteners on its outside surface, and the decorative elements may have complementary snap button fasteners, allowing the decorative elements to be attached to the base bag instead of a panel. Other decorative items may be engaged with the base bag fasteners, as well. For example, and without limitation, dolls (e.g., baby dolls, stuffed animal dolls, celebrity dolls, etc.) having fasteners in each of four limbs (e.g., in the hands and feet) may be attached to the base fasteners. In other embodiments, the fasteners on the base bag may be engaged with hooks, ties, or other means for attaching items to the base bag, such as ornaments, figurines, stuffed animals, or other items.
In some non-limiting embodiments, the panels may themselves be reversible and may have decorative features on both sides thereof. As an example and without limiting the invention, the panels may have fasteners on both sides of the panel to allow either side of the panel to be attached to the base bags. In a non-limiting example, the panels may have a slot in each corner for receiving a button head on a corresponding portion of the base bag. In another non-limiting example, the panels may have female snap button fasteners on both sides of the panel, the fasteners on each side of which may correspond to male snap button fasteners on the outside of the base bags. Alternatively, the panel may have male snap button fasteners on both sides of the panel for female receivers on a corresponding portion of the base bag. The panels may also have decorative snap button caps for disguising the snap button female or male parts that are on the outer exposed side of the panel. For example, and without limitation, a decorative snap button cap may include a fabric flower having a fastener on a back surface thereof. Without limiting the invention, the snap button caps may be engaged with the outer snap button fastener, thereby adding a decorative element to the panel while simultaneously concealing the fasteners on the outer exposed surface of the panel. The decorative element may be decorative button caps, charms, bows, pinwheels, flowers, etc. In a further non-limiting example, the panel may have snap button fasteners that are mounted on a reversible axial joint that allows the snap button fastener to spin in the joint and be engaged from either side of the panel. For example, the snap button fasteners on the panel may have female fasteners on one side and a decorative design and/or material on the other side.
It is appreciated that other panels are contemplated in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention. In some non-limiting examples, a panel can include an electronic device, lights (e.g., LED lights), or electronic displays (e.g., LED, OLED, or LCD screens) to display images or video. For example, the panel may have a decorative pattern (e.g., wording, an animal, a symbol, and other images) of lights that may be lit in various patterns (e.g., all the lights may be activated simultaneously, the lights may be activated in a cascading pattern, etc.). The panel may also be operable to activate the lights in multiple preprogrammed patterns that may automatically alternate in a sequence or the panel may have a switch for selecting the desired, pre-programmed pattern. In other non-limiting embodiments, the panel may include an LED screen operable to receive digital data from a memory device (e.g., a thumb drive), and provide a display of photos (e.g., scrolling photos) or video on the panel. The panel may include other electronic devices such as a calculator, or solar panels for a charger. In one non-limiting example, the panel may have small solar panels on the outside and a pouch therein having a plug for charging an electronic device, such as a smart phone, a tablet, a camera, and/or a digital music player. In other non-limiting examples, a panel can be formed of plastic, beads, mosaic inlay, metal trim, glass, clocks, shells, and combinations thereof.
It is to be appreciated that, in some preferred embodiments, the panels can have a particular style of fabric that serves as a unique decorative element. For example, and without limitation, the panels can be constructed or comprise cotton, silk, cork, cashmere, plastic, acrylic, corduroy, felt, elastane (e,g, spandex), suede, velvet, paper, corkboard, fur, faux fur, leather, suede, wool, linen, hemp, ramie, jute, lastex, nylon, polyester, rayon, pleather, feathers, mesh, wood, chain link, rhinestones, semi-precious stones, garland, sequins, and combinations thereof.
Exemplary Fasteners
In preferred embodiments, an inner surface of the decorative outer panels may have fastening elements for cooperating with complementary fastening elements on the base bags. In some implementations, the fastening elements comprise snaps or buttons. However, it is to be appreciated that other fastening elements are contemplated in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention. For example, and without limitation, the fastening elements may comprise fabric hook-and-loop fasteners, magnets, eyelets, eyeholes, hooks, loopholes, chain links, chains, zippers, pegs, grommets, ribbons, or knots. It is to be appreciated that fabric hook-and-loop fasteners may be complementary fasteners having a first side that is made up of semi-rigid hooks and a second side made up of soft fabric loops (e.g., Velcro). When the two sides of the hook-and-loop fasteners are brought together the hooks engage with the loops and hold the two sides together. The hooks may be made from a plastic material such as polyester or polyethylene, and the loops may be made from thread comprising polyester, polyethylene, polyamides, wool, or other thread materials.
It is to be appreciated that the location of the fastening elements on the panels should correspond to the location of the fastening elements on the base bags, such that the panel can be affixed to at least one side of the base bag. In preferred embodiments, a system can include a plurality of panels and a plurality of base bags, where the fastening elements of the base bags and the fastening elements of the panels are in the same locations. Without limiting the invention, the system may be based on a single, universal pattern of fasteners having a regular spacing and number of fasteners. As a non-limiting example, the system may be based on a pattern of four fasteners arranged in a rectangular pattern, such that the fasteners are near the corners of a rectangular shape of the panels. Each type of bag (e.g., a handbag, a purse, a tote, a technology case, a lunch box, etc.) may have corresponding fasteners arranged in the same pattern on one or more sides, surfaces, or sections. For instance, a handbag may have a front section (and/or a back section) that is same size as the panel, and may have fasteners placed at the corners of the front and/or back sections for attaching the panel thereto. In other instances, and without limitation, a clutch bag may have fasteners arranged on a front and back side such that some fasteners of a single panel may engage the fasteners of the front side of the bag and some other fasteners of the panel may engage the fasteners of the back side of the clutch. As such, a single panel can be affixed to multiple types of base bags, and multiple panels can be affixed to a single type of base bag. In other non-limiting embodiments, the system may be based on a different pattern of fasteners, such as a triangular pattern, a star pattern, a circular pattern, an oval pattern, polygonal patterns, and other geometric patterns.
In some embodiments, the fastening elements of the panels can be affixed to an inside surface thereof. For example, and without limitation, the fastening elements can comprise fabric hook and loop fasteners sewn into the inner surface of the panel. In some embodiments, the fastening elements can extend through the panel. For example, and without limitation, the fastening elements can comprise snaps which have distal connecting ends on an inside surface of the panel and proximal cosmetic ends on an outside surface of the panel. It is to be appreciated that in some embodiments a proximal end of the fastening elements are exposed at an outer surface of the panels. Accordingly, the fastening elements may also comprise decorative elements. For example, and without limitation, the fastening elements can have decorative elements on proximal ends thereof with distinctive styles, colors, logos or other visual art which may be exposed on the outside surface of the panel. As explained above, in some embodiments the fasteners may be reversible, such that they may be reversed with panels that may have patterns or other features on both sides thereof. As a non-limiting example, the fasteners on the panel may be reversible female components of snaps that can be rotated 180° to allow the panel to be attached to the base bag with either side of the panel exposed.
In some embodiments, decorative elements can be engaged with the fastening elements on the base bag. For example, and without limitation, decorative buttons can be engaged with one or more fastening elements on the base bag. In some embodiments, decorative elements can be engaged to an outside surface of the panels. In some implementations where the fastening elements extend through the panel, the decorative elements can be engaged to the proximal end of the fastening elements. However, in some implementations, decorative elements can be engaged to other portions of the panels. In some implementations, the decorative elements may comprise a charm. However, it is to be appreciated that other decorative elements for attachment to the panel and/or base bag are contemplated in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention. For example, and without limitation, the decorative element may comprise buttons, bows, pinwheels, or stuffed toy animals or other toys.
Exemplary Systems
Referring now to the exemplary illustrations, a system can include a plurality of base bag types to which one or more of a plurality of interchangeable panels may be affixed. Each of said base bag types may have a different structure, such as a handbag, a purse, a tote, a technology case, a lunch box, etc.) In some preferred embodiments, a single panel may be affixed to a plurality of base bags. In such embodiments, and without limitation, a plurality of base bags and a plurality of panels may share a universal pattern of fasteners and a single kind of fastener system (e.g., snap buttons), allowing each of the plurality of panels to be affixed to any of the plurality of bags. For example, and without limitation, the panel of FIG. 1 may be configured to be attached to the base bag of FIG. 1, the base bag of FIG. 4, or the base bag of FIG. 5. However, it is to be appreciated that other panel/base bag configurations are contemplated in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention.
In some preferred embodiments, the type and placement of the fastening elements on the panels and base bags are standardized such that any panel in the system may be attached to any base bag in the system. However, it is to be appreciated in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention, a system may comprise base bags and panels each having different shapes, sizes, and fastening elements. It is further to be appreciated that (i) the size of a panel and the type and placement of the fastening elements thereon and (ii) the size of the base bag and the type and placement of the fastening elements thereon, may provide for various base bag/panel combinations. For example, and without limitation, a system may include (a) a first and second panel, with first and second sizes and fastening element types, respectively, (b) a first base bag adapted to receive the first or second panel, (c) a second base bag adapted to receive the first panel, and (d) a third base bag adapted to receive the second panel. In such embodiments, the decorative, functional, and reversible features of the panels (as described above) may apply to panels of different sizes and shapes. It is to be appreciated that other variations are contemplated in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention.
In the exemplary illustrations of FIGS. 1-6, it can be seen that various base bag styles can be provided, including clutch case A, handbag B, tote bag C, technology case D, lunchbox E, and backpack F. It is to be appreciated that the preceding list of bags does not limit the present invention, and other kinds of bags are encompassed by the present invention. It can be also seen that various panels can be provided, including panel 10, panel 20, panel 30, panel 40, panel 50, panel 60, panel 70, and panel 80. Each panel may have fastening elements (such as fastening elements 1A-8D) and each base bag may have corresponding fastening elements (such as fastening elements 1 a-8 d). For example, and without limitation, and with specific reference to the illustration of FIG. 1, base bag A may include fastening elements 1 a, 1 b, 1 c, and 1 d that may cooperate with complementary fastening elements 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D, respectively, of panel 10. It is to be appreciated that, as above, systems may include panels that are interchangeable with different base bags. Thus, for example, and without limitation, fastening elements 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D of panel 10 (as illustrated in FIG. 1) may also cooperate with fastening elements 2 a, 2 b, 2 c, and 2 d of base bag B (as illustrated in FIG. 2). In some embodiments, the fasteners 1 a-8 d and 1A-8D may be complementary male and female portions of snaps buttons. For example, and without limitation, fasteners 1 a-8 d may be male portions of snap buttons, and fasteners 1A-8D may be female portions of snap buttons. This arrangement allows the panels to be easily installed on a base bag, and to be easily interchanged between different base bags.
Referring now to the example of FIG. 1, panel 10 may be attached and unattached to base bag A by engagement of fastening elements 1A-1D to fastening elements 1 a-1 d on both sides of base bag A. In this non-limiting example, single panel 10 may provide a cover to both sides of the clutch bag A, and therefore change the outward material, color and/or pattern of the clutch bag A when it is attached.
Referring now to the example of FIG. 2, panel 20 may be attached and unattached to base bag B by engagement of fastening elements 2A-2D to fastening elements 2 a-2 d on a first side of base bag B. In addition, panel 30 may be attached and unattached to base bag B by engagement of fastening elements 3A-3D to fastening elements 3 a-3 d on a first side of base bag B. The panels 20 and 30 may have the same material, color, and pattern, however it is to be appreciated that panels 20 and 30 may have different decorative stylization. In other non-limiting examples, one or both panels may have a pocket or compartment therein for insertion of photographs, artwork, or other items.
Referring now to the example of FIG. 3, panel 40 may be attached and unattached to base bag C by engagement of fastening elements 4A-4D to fastening elements 4 a-4 d on a first side of base bag C. In addition, panel 50 may be attached and unattached to base bag C by engagement of fastening elements 5A-5D to fastening elements 5 a-5 d on a first side of base bag C. In some non-limiting example, the panels 40 and 50 may be simply decorative. In other non-limiting examples, the panels 40 and 50 may include pockets or compartments therein for insertion of items.
Referring now to the example of FIG. 4, panel 60 may be attached and unattached to base bag D by engagement of fastening elements 6A-6D to fastening elements 6 a-6 d on both sides of base bag D. In some non-limiting examples, the panel 60 may be simply decorative. In other non-limiting examples, the panel may include a pouch for a writing utensil, a notepad, a charger or other accessories for a tablet, laptop, or other electronic device.
Referring now to the example of FIG. 5, panel 70 may be attached and unattached to base bag E by engagement of fastening elements 7A-7D to fastening elements 7 a-7 d on a single of base bag E. In some non-limiting examples, the panel 70 may be simply decorative. In other embodiments, the panel may also include a pocket for storing flatware or other items to supplement the storage of the lunchbag E. In further non-limiting examples, the panel may be a rigid compartment (not shown) having a decorative outer side that opens to reveal storage compartment.
Referring now to the example of FIG. 6, panel 80 may be attached and unattached to base bag F by engagement of fastening elements 8A-8D to fastening elements 8 a-8 d on sides of base bag F. In some non-limiting examples, the panel 80 may be simply decorative. In other non-limiting examples, the panel 80 may have a fabric hook and loop system for attaching patches (e.g., school-related patches, sports-related patches, etc.). In further non-limiting examples, the panel 80 may have an LCD screen operable to show digital photos or videos.
It is to be appreciated that, in preferred embodiments, the spacing of fastening elements 1A-1D, 2A-2D, 3A-3D, 4A-4D, 5A-5D, and 6A-6D, on panels 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60, respectively, are similar such that each panel may be attached to any base bag in a system. Correspondingly, it is to be appreciated that, in preferred embodiments, the spacing of fastening elements 1 a-1 d, 2 a-2 d, 3 a-3 d, 4 a-4 d, 5 a-5 d, and 6 a-6 d, on base bags A, B, C, D, E, and F, respectively, is universal, such that each base bag may receive any panel in a system.
In some embodiments, a panel may be attached to a base bag by engaging each fastening element on the panel to each fastening element on the base bag. For example with reference to FIG. 7, and without limitation, panel 90 may include more than four fastening elements (e.g., nine fasteners) for engaging each more than fastening elements (e.g., nine fasteners) on base bag G. However, it is to be appreciated that in other embodiments of the present invention, less than all fastening elements may be used. For example with reference to FIG. 8, and without limitation, panel 100 may include four fastening elements for engaging four of the nine fastening elements on base bag G. It is further to be appreciated that, in some embodiments, multiple panels may be attached to a single base bag. For example with reference to FIG. 9, and without limitation, panel 110 and panel 120 may each be attached to base bag G.

CONCLUSION/SUMMARY

The present invention thusly provides apparatuses and systems that enable a plurality of panels to be interchanged between bags of different styles. It is to be understood that variations, modifications, and permutations of embodiments of the present invention may be made without departing from the scope thereof. It is also to be understood that the present invention is not to be limited by the specific embodiments, descriptions, or illustrations or combinations of either components or steps disclosed herein. Thus, although reference has been made to the accompanying figures, it is to be appreciated that these figures are exemplary and are not meant to limit the scope of the present invention.

Claims

What is claimed is:

1. A system comprising:

a) a plurality of bags, each base bag having an outside surface and an inner cavity bound by said outside surface for receiving an item therein, and a first plurality of fastening elements on said outside surface of said base bag, wherein said fastening elements on said outside surface of each of said base bags are arranged in a first pattern; and

b) a plurality of outer panels, each outer panel having a first side, a second side having at least one decorative or functional feature, and a second plurality of fastening elements on said first side of said outer panel, wherein said fastening elements on said first side of each of said outer panels are arranged in a second pattern,

wherein said first pattern is complementary to said second pattern, and wherein engagement of said outer panel fastening elements to said base bag fastening elements attaches said outer panels to said base bags.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein each of said base bags are selected from the group consisting of a purse, a handbag, a tote bag, a clutch case, a lunchbox, a technology case, a backpack, and a wallet.

3. The system of claim 1, at least one of said base bags having at least one wall comprising a semi-rigid material or a rigid material.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein each of said plurality of outer panels is entirely on an exterior of a base bag when engaged with said base bag.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein no portion of an outer panel is located within an interior of a base bag when said outer panel is attached to said base bag.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein said first and second pluralities of fastening elements are snap button fasteners, and said first plurality of fastening elements are complementary to said second plurality fastening elements.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein said first and second patterns each comprise four of said fastening elements in a rectangular arrangement.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein at least one of said outer panels is reversible, allowing either said first side or said second side to be fastened to said outer surfaces of said base bags.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein at least two of said outer panels are attachable to said first base bag.

10. The system of claim 1, said second side of at least one of said outer panels comprising a surface adapted to receive writing or decorations thereon.

11. The system of claim 1, said second side of at least one of said outer panels comprising a pouch or compartment adapted to receive items therein.

12. The system of claim 1, said second side of at least one of said outer panels comprising an electronic device.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein said electronic device comprises a plurality of lights.

14. The system of claim 12, wherein said electronic device comprises an electronic display.

15. The system of claim 12, wherein said electronic device comprises a solar charger.

16. The system of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of decorative elements each having a fastening element thereon, said decorative element fastening element complementary to at least one of said fastening elements on said base bags.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein said decorative elements are selected from the group consisting of charms, chains, pinwheels, flowers, bows, figurines, and dolls.

18. The system of claim 1, further comprising at least one doll having a plurality of fastening elements thereon that are attachable to said fastening elements on said base bags in said first pattern.

19. A system of customizable bags and interchangeable panels comprising:

a. a plurality of bags each having a different structure and each having first fasteners on at least one outer surface thereof; and

b. a plurality of panels each having second fasteners thereon, wherein said second fasteners on each of said panels are engageable to said first fasteners on said outer surface of said bags and are operable to attach the panel to each of said bags, each said plurality of panels having different decorative or functional features.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein at least one of said plurality of bags includes at least two outer surfaces, each surface having said first fasteners arranged in a same pattern.

21. The system of claim 19, wherein said first fasteners of said bags and said second fasteners of said panels each are arranged in a universal pattern enabling any of said panels to be attached to any of said bags.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein said universal pattern comprises four fasteners in a rectangular pattern, wherein each of said panels are rectangular and have a fastener near a corner thereof.

23. The system of claim 19, wherein each of said plurality of panels has a universal size.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein said at least one outer surface of each of said plurality of bags has said universal size.

25. The system of claim 24, wherein each of said plurality of bags have a different size.

26. The system of claim 19, wherein at least one of said plurality of bags comprises a first pattern of said first fasteners and a second pattern of said first fasteners, said second pattern different from said first pattern.

27. The system of claim 26, wherein said plurality of panels comprise (i) a first set of panels having said second fasteners in a complementary arrangement to said first pattern and (ii) a second set of panels having said second fasteners in a complementary arrangement to said second pattern, each of said second set of panels having different decorative or functional features.

28. The system of claim 19, wherein said first and second fasteners are snap button fasteners, and said first fasteners are complementary to said second fasteners.

29. The system of claim 19, wherein each said plurality of panels are adapted such that it is entirely on an exterior of a base bag when said second plurality of fasteners are engaged to said first plurality of fasteners.

30. The system of claim 19, wherein each said plurality of panels are adapted such that no portion of said panel is positioned in an inner cavity of a base bag when said second plurality of fasteners are engaged to said first plurality of fasteners.

31. The system of claim 19, further comprising a plurality of decorative elements each having a fastener thereon, said decorative element fastener complementary to at least one of said first fasteners on said bags.

32. The system of claim 31, wherein said decorative elements are selected from the group consisting of charms, chains, pinwheels, flowers, bows, figurines, and dolls.

33. The system of claim 19, further comprising at least one doll having a plurality of third fasteners thereon that are attachable to said first fasteners in said universal pattern.

34. A method of customizing a bag, comprising the steps of:

a) selecting a first panel from a first plurality of panels, each of said first plurality of panels having fasteners in a first pattern on a first side thereof;

b) selecting a first base bag from a plurality of base bags, each of said plurality of base bags having a first set of fasteners in said first pattern on at least one outer surface thereof; and

c) attaching said first panel to said first base bag by engaging said fasteners of said first panel with said fasteners of said first base bag.

35. The method of claim 34, further comprising the steps of:

d) selecting a second base bag from said plurality of base bags;

e) removing said first panel from said first base bag; and

f) attaching said first panel to said second base bag by engaging said fasteners of said first panel with said fasteners of said second base bag.

36. The method of claim 34, further comprising the steps of:

d) selecting a second panel from said first plurality of panels;

e) removing said first panel from said first base bag; and

f) attaching said second panel to said first base bag by engaging said fasteners of said second panel with said fasteners of said base bag.

37. The method of claim 34, further comprising the steps of:

d) removing said first panel from said first base bag, said first panel further having fasteners in a second pattern on a second side thereof; and

e) attaching said first panel to said first base bag by engaging said fasteners on said second side of said first panel with said fasteners of said base bag.

38. The method of claim 34, further comprising the steps of:

d) selecting a second panel from a second plurality of panels, each of said second plurality of panels having fasteners in a second pattern on a first side thereof;

e) attaching said second panel to said first base bag, said first base bag further having a second set of fasteners in said second pattern on at least one outer surface thereof, by engaging said fasteners of said second panel with said fasteners of said first base bag.

39. The method of claim 34, further comprising the step of customizing a second side of said first panel by decorating said second side with one or more writing implements or paints.

40. The method of claim 34, further comprising the steps of:

d) selecting a decorative element from a plurality of decorative elements, each of said plurality of decorative elements having at least one fastener thereon;

e) removing said first panel from said first base bag; and

f) attaching said decorative element to said first base bag by engaging said at least one fastener of said at decorative element with at least one of said fasteners of said first base bag.

41. The method of claim 40, wherein said plurality of decorative elements are selected from the group consisting of charms, chains, pinwheels, flowers, bows, figurines, and dolls.
