Abstract

A hair highlighting applicator comb is taught which has a hollow body with comb teeth, housing a dual cartridge containing a separate viscous bleach dye compound and a formulated viscous accelerator compound with a dual plunger rod having rack teeth aligned with the dual cartridge. A lever handle is pivoted onto the comb body and includes a ratchet arm pivotally engaging the lever handle and meshing with the plunger rod rack teeth. When the handle is manually pivoted the plunger rod slides linearly forward, and compresses the cartridge forcing the separate compounds to flow between selected comb teeth. A mixer, in fluid communication between the cartridge and the teeth, forces the separate compounds to blend together highlighting a person's hair in a spaced relationship when the comb is drawn through ones hair and the lever is manually compressed simultaneously.

Description

    TECHNICAL FIELD
  • The present invention relates to hair applicators in general. More specifically to a comb having a replaceable dual cartridge incorporating a lever actuator with a fluid mixer within the comb dissipating mixed viscous bleach dye and a formulated viscous accelerator at spaced intervals between teeth when the comb is applied to a person's hair.
  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • Previously, many types of combs have been used in endeavoring to provide an effective means to dispense hair styling solutions to the hair. Many prior art patents have accomplished the task using a squeeze bottle or a valve for a single solution, other approaches have been developed such as electric motor driven liquid dye dispensers, and electromechanical brushes for a dye requiring mixing with a catalyst.
  • The prior art listed below did not disclose patents that possess the novelty of the instant invention; however the following U.S. patents are considered related:

  • p BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • Currently a person's hair is lightened by a beautician mixing two ingredients by hand into the form of a loose batter creamy mix. The ingredients consist of a bleach dye and an accelerator of peroxide in paste form. The beautician in conventional salons normally use the foil technique which is comprised of separating strands of hair about one inch wide and laying a strip of aluminum foil underneath then brushing the hair with the mix and folding the foil around the hair. Traditionally a one inch space is allowed between the foil applications and the process is repeated.
  • The primary object of the invention is to permit a person to accomplish hair highlighting by self administration or with the help of an untrained aide using only a self contained applicator comb. The comb contains all of the necessary ingredients and apparatus to evenly dispense a mixed dye composite. The applicator comb has teeth spaced apart the proper distance and a viscous bleach dye and a formulated viscous accelerator compound are contained within a dual cartridge. A mixer assembly is in fluid communication with the combined cartridges having a manifold conduit forming a mixing chamber, containing a mixing insert, allowing a blended compound from the cartridges to be ejected between the comb teeth. A lever actuator interfaced with the plunger rods permits precise volume control.
  • An important object of the invention is the ease of application since the distance of the space between the teeth is predetermined allowing a wide swath to be dyed at the same time. The mix ratio is pre-selected therefore no handling of liquids or emulsion is required.
  • Another object of the invention is the use of a manual lever to regulate the flow of the mixed formulation by simply squeezing the lever toward the handle. A clicking noise is created as the lever ratchet arm strikes the next tooth of the plunger permitting the user to remember the number of clicks to produce the optimum amount of the mixture according to the length of the hair to be hi' blighted.
  • Yet another advantage of the inventions use is that it saves money and time, as it does not require professional application at a hair salon with the only expense is that of purchasing the applicator comb at a convenient time. A dual cartridge is supplied with the device originally and the applicator comb is easily cleaned after use with water and a syringe pressurizing the internal conduits when the cartridge is removed. The entire applicator comb is formed of a clear thermoplastic resin permitting visual indication that no mixed blend remains inside. Individual dual cartridges are available to the user in a variety of colors shades and tints.
  • A further object is that the comb invention is completely self contained requiring no external mixing without any mess, and the only requirement is to install the dual cartridge into the mixing nozzle to have the comb ready for use.
  • An advantage of the invention is that the device is cost effective to start with, as it would be almost equal to the cost of the dye components itself. Since the dual cartridge is the disposable throw away after use type, therefore none of the paraphernalia normally required for highlight hair is required to be stored only the applicator comb itself.
  • Another object is realized by the use of a lever actuator which permits a controlled rate of flow speed allowing a user to gently squeeze the lever handle with either the right or left hand permitting the desired amount of mixed compound to be released as required for the application.
  • A further advantage is the ease of manufacture which utilizes the injection molding process with the comb formed in two halves then installing each half of the mixer with the mixer inserts, the spring loaded lever assembly, and the plunger rod in-between then bonding the halves together.
  • Finally the hair highlighting applicator comb is reusable, as it only requires a new dual cartridge which is readily available at the same retailer that furnished the comb originally or other convenient retailers handling similar hair lightening materials.
  • These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the subsequent detailed description of the preferred embodiment and the appended claims taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
  • The best mode for carrying out the invention is presented in terms of a preferred embodiment. This preferred embodiment of a hair highlighting applicator comb 10 is shown in FIGS. 1 thorough 29 and is comprised of a hollow comb body 20 with a number of comb teeth 22 descending from the body 20, and an access opening 24 is formed above the comb teeth 22, as illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2.
  • The comb body 20 is formed in two separate side halves each having opposed interconnecting means in the form of posts 26, pins 28 and sockets 30. The halves consist of a left side half 32, having the access opening 24 above the teeth, and a right side half 34 in essentially mirror image of the left side half 32, except for the access opening 24, and the opposed interconnecting means, 26, 28 and 30. The comb body 20 includes a handle end 36 and a comb end 38 with the handle end 36 having a linear opening 40 on an under side as illustrated in FIGS. 8 and 13, and a rectangular slot 42 on a distal handle end 36, as shown in FIG. 1.
  • The comb teeth 22 may be formed in any number preferably from 4 to 60 teeth with 12 teeth found to be ideal. The teeth 22 are formed as a half tooth in the left and right side half 32 and 34 and are permanently bonded together at the assembly of the comb body 20 each forming a dense and stiff tooth member.
  • A dual cartridge 44 is removeably positioned within the comb body 20 through the access opening 24 and consists of a first tube 46 and a second tube 48 connected longitudinally together. Each tube 46 and 48 individually have one end formed with a reduced neck 50 and a nozzle 52 and, an opposed end having a full diameter open end 54, as shown in FIG. 27. A lifting tab 56 is integrally formed on a rear outside surface of the first tube 46, for lifting and removing the cartridge 44 from the comb body 20. The cartridge tubes 46 and 48 each contain separate compounds therein; with the first tube 46 having a viscous bleach dye compound 58 of a selected color and the second tube 48 a formulated viscous accelerator compound. It should be understood that the compounds may be reversed in the tubes 46 and 48.
  • A resilient dual mixer gasket 62, shown in FIGS. 3 and 26, is plugged into both the first cartridge tube nozzle 52 and second cartridge tube nozzle 52 at the same time when the cartridge 44 is inserted into the applicator comb 10 through the access opening 24 sealing the junction. An individual resilient stopper 64 is placed in the full diameter opening 54 of each cartridge tube 46 and 48 with each stopper 64 having an irregular shaped hole 66 therein for releasing air pressure when the cartridge 44 is originally filled with the liquid compound 60 and 62. A stopper plug 65 is inserted in the irregular shaped hole 66 to seal each cartridge tube 46 and 48.
  • A dual plunger rod 68 has a number of rack teeth 70 spaced in a straight line, and the plunger rod 68 is slideably disposed within the comb body 20 in linear alignment with the dual cartridge 44. The plunger rod rack teeth 70 face downwardly from the comb body handle end 36. A downwardly angled gripping flange 71 is formed on a distal end of the dual plunger rod 68 which extends outwardly from the comb body 20 through the rectangular slot 42 formed within the body, as illustrated in FIG. 1. An extension spring 72 is attached between the comb body 20 and the dual plunger rod 68 which draws the plunger rod 68 into the dual cartridge 44 while maintaining a linear force until incrementally released by manual operation of a lever handle 74.
  • The lever handle 74 has a first end 76 and a second end 78, with the first end 76 pivoted onto the comb body 20 adjacent to the comb teeth 22. A ratchet arm 80 pivotally engages the second end 78 of the lever handle 74 with the ratchet arm 80 meshing with the plunger rod rack teeth 70. The linear opening 40 is sufficiently wide to receive the ratchet arm 80 when engaging the plunger rod rack teeth 70 and the comb end 38 is sufficiently wide to house the dual plunger rod 68 in a side by side horizontal configuration. The lever handle 74 is pivotally attached to the comb body 20 with the integrally formed post 26 having a mating socket 30.
  • The ratchet arm 80, illustrated in FIG. 22, includes a few ratchet arm teeth 82 configured to mate with the dual plunge rod rack teeth 70. A dowel pin 84, depicted in FIG. 25, pivotally attaches the ratchet arm 80 to the lever handle 74. Further a torsion spring 86, shown in FIG. 24, is attached to the dowel pin 84 to urge the ratchet arm teeth 82 to continually mesh with the plunge rod rack teeth 70 until released by the manual compression on the lever handle 74 against the handle end 36 of the comb body 20.
  • A mixer 88 is in fluid communication between the dual cartridge 44 and the comb teeth 22, which forces the separate viscous bleach dye and formulated viscous accelerator compounds 58 and 60 to blend together forming a paste. The mixer 88 consists of a mixer left half 90 and a mixer right half 92, as illustrated in FIGS. 14, 15, 18 and 19, which are permanently bonded and mated together prior to being placed within the comb body 20.
  • When the mixer left half 90 and the mixer right half 92 are mated together a mixing chamber 94 is formed, as shown in FIGURES. 15 and 18 and a mixer insert 96 is installed. The mixer left half 90 and the mixer right half 92 each have an opposed manifold groove 98 therein, such that when mated together form a complete manifold conduit connecting from the dual cartridge 44 through the mixer insert 96 in the mixing chamber 94, to a number of comb teeth root junctions 100 which are each spaced apart from a pair of the comb body teeth 22. While the number of teeth root junctions 100 may be any amount there must be at least two junctions 100. A mixer top fitting 102, shown in FIG. 17, is positioned on the combined mixer left half 90 and mixer right half 92 and is in fluid communication with the dual cartridge 44 and the mixing chamber 94.
  • The comb body 20, dual cartridge 44, dual plunger 68, lever handle 74, ratchet arm 82 and the complete mixer assembly 88, 96 and 102 are formed of thermoplastic resin selected from the group consisting of cellulose, phenolic, phenylene oxide, polycarbonate, polyester, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, acetyl, polyimide and poly vinyl chloride in a transparent, translucent or opaque visual category. Transparent thermoplastic resin is preferred
  • In operation the hair highlighting applicator comb 10 is used to streak a person's hair in a spaced highlighting relationship. The subject's hair should be dry and the cartridge 44 removed from the wrapper. The plunger rod 68 is pulled out away from the handle end 36 until it stops and the lever handle 74 is compressed into the handle end 36 where the ratchet arm 80 pushes, by its spring loaded action, into the plunger rod 68 in front of its integral rack teeth 70. The cartridge 44 is then inserted into the access opening 24 where the extension spring 72 urges the plunger rod 68 against the cartridge resilient stopper 64 but not sufficiently to expel any viscous bleach dye and formulated viscous accelerator compound 58 and 60 at this time as the ratchet arm 80 has sufficient force to retain the plunger rod 68 from further movement.
  • When ready for use the lever handle 74 is pulled away from the comb handle end 36 and the comb 10 is drawn through the selected area of hair while simultaneously compressing lever handle 74 against the handle end 36 of the comb 10 thereby releasing the mixed viscous bleach dye and formulated viscous accelerator compound 58 and 60 under the influence of the extension spring 72. When the handle 74 is manually pivoted upward into the comb body 20 the plunger rod 68 slides linearly forward, under the urging of the ratchet arm 80, and compresses the cartridge 44 interior forcing the blended compounds 58 and 60 to flow between selected comb teeth 22 in a controlled manner. A clicking noise is created as the spring loaded lever ratchet arm 80 strikes the next rack tooth 70 of the plunger rod 68 indicating functional operation and volume control of the blended, soft, homogeneous emulsion compound 58 and 60 which is easily understood by the user.
  • When the process is completed and the mixed compound is depleted, the cartridge 44 may be removed by pulling the plunger rod 68 outwardly to its open at rest reset position with the lever handle 74 compressed, at that point the cartridge 44 may be detached through the access opening 24 by gripping and pulling on the lifting tab 56.
  • The entire comb 10 may be easily cleaned with water after use, however a syringe filled with water for pressurizing the internal conduits may be required in some special circumstances. As the entire applicator comb 10 is formed of a clear thermoplastic resin visual indication that no individual compound or viscous bleach dye mixture still remains inside. Replacement dual cartridges may be obtained in a variety of colors shades and tints.
  • While the invention has been described in complete detail and pictorially shown in the accompanying drawings, it is not to be limited to such details, since many changes and modifications may be made to the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence, it is described to cover any and all modifications and forms which may come within the language and scope of the appended claims.
