(01'. arr-'94) The present invention relates "to a cover or closure construction, and more inparticular to a novel locking mechanism for locking the cover or closure on a container.
Among the objects of the present invention is to provide a novel construction of detachable coverorclosure for a container which isadapted to be readily assembled, removed or replaced with a minimum amount of efiort, and which at all times formsa tight closure or seal for the con tainer. The present invention, although primarily adapted for use on containers holding perishable products, food or other material, is admirably adapted for use wherever a detachable and tight closure is desired or essentia A further object of the present invention is-to provide a novel construction of locking device for a cover or closure for a container, permitting the cover to be readily removed or replaced for inspection or removal of the contents, without inany way injuring the cover of itsmeans for'connecting it to the container.
A still further object is to provide a novel means and method of connecting a. cover or closure to a container such as a tub, barrel or the like, such means permitting ready removal and replacement of the cover or closure.
Another object of the invention is in the provision of a novel means for locking a cover or closure on a container and including a wire band or hoop adapted to encompass the container and provided with a lever connected to the ends of the wire band or hoop in such a manner as to lengthen or shorten the efiective length thereof, whereby to release or look the cover or closure in position.
Further objects are to provide a construction of maximum'simplicity, efliciency, economy and ease of assembly and operation, and such further objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear, and as are inherently possessed thereby.
The invention further resides in the combination, construction, and arrangements of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and while there is shown therein a preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that the same is. susceptible of modification and change, and comprehends other arrangements and details, without departing from the spirit of the invention. l

The band or annular ring 4 has a'series of clips 5 suitably connected thereto as by welding or the 30 like. As disclosed in Fig. 3, the end or flange I0 is adapted to seat within this oiT-set portion and lock the hoop against the sides of the container by reason of the fact that when the leveror arm 9 is in the position shown in Fig. 3, the effective or operativelength of the hoop is reduced, whereby the hoop is clamped against .the sides of the tub and maintains or looks the cover in position. When the lever is raised or unlatched as shown in Fig. 2, the efiective or operative length of the hoop is increased, and it is released from its clamping engagement with the sides of the container. Thus the arm or lever is so arranged as to. vary the operative length of the hoop whereby "casion may require.

In-order that thecover and hoop which is adapted to be clamped ontothe container may fit containers-even though; they'vary slightly in their diameter,-this wirehoop is provided with off-sets or kinks I2 to permit an elongation of this wire. These kinks are particularly advantageous when the cover is employed onwooden containers which-are nbrmally water soaked before being filled orpacked and thus vary in their diameters, although it frequently happens thateven in card board, metal or other containers, there is aslight variation inlsize or' diameter-.

Having thus disclosed the invention, we claim:
1. A closure for a container or the like comprising a cover adapted to seat on the open end of said container, a band depending from said'cover,
