Definitions
- Electronic devices for example, mobile phones, allow a user to have a telephone conversation or listen to radio or prerecorded music using an earphone attached to an end of a cable.
- Earphones protect the user from radio emissions and allow the user to drive safely by precluding the need to hold the electronic device to the user's ear while using the electronic device.
- Earphones are of different sizes and produce output at different levels of quality.
- a particular predetermined length of the cable housing the earphones is not always optimal or ideal for all users. In some cases, cables longer than that required by a user are provided to the user. If the user finds the length of the cable too long, the user tries to reduce the length of the cable by winding some portion of the cable around the electronic device.
- Winding the cable around the electronic device creates stress on wires inside the cable. Moreover, inadequate housing of the cables may result in cross talk and electronic noise, thereby reducing the quality of an audio signal transmitted though the cable.
- the earphones along with the cable need to be conveniently stored. Usually, users store the earphones in their pockets. In order to answer an incoming call, the users are required to connect the earphones to the mobile phone, which is inconvenient for the users.
- some retraction mechanisms comprise springs used for facilitating winding of the cable in a housing.
- these springs wear out, which disallow retraction of the cable into the housing, thereby causing an inconvenience to the user due to the inability to retract the cable into the housing. Therefore, there is need for additional or secondary provisions for retracting the cable into the housing independent of a single means for retracting the cable.
- a retraction apparatus that retracts a retractable cable into a support housing, allows mounting of an electronic device adjacent to a retraction mechanism, and provides selective mechanisms for retracting the retractable cable into the support housing.

Description
- Electronic devices, for example, mobile phones, allow a user to have a telephone conversation or listen to radio or prerecorded music using an earphone attached to an end of a cable. Earphones protect the user from radio emissions and allow the user to drive safely by precluding the need to hold the electronic device to the user's ear while using the electronic device. Earphones are of different sizes and produce output at different levels of quality. A particular predetermined length of the cable housing the earphones is not always optimal or ideal for all users. In some cases, cables longer than that required by a user are provided to the user. If the user finds the length of the cable too long, the user tries to reduce the length of the cable by winding some portion of the cable around the electronic device. Winding the cable around the electronic device creates stress on wires inside the cable. Moreover, inadequate housing of the cables may result in cross talk and electronic noise, thereby reducing the quality of an audio signal transmitted though the cable. In addition, when the earphones are not in use, the earphones along with the cable need to be conveniently stored. Usually, users store the earphones in their pockets. In order to answer an incoming call, the users are required to connect the earphones to the mobile phone, which is inconvenient for the users.
- To eliminate the stress created on the wires inside the cable, there is a need for a convenient housing for winding the cable in the housing irrespective of the length of the cable and for reducing cross talk and electronic noise. Moreover, there is a need for enclosing the electronic device against the housing to allow a user to conveniently release the cable that houses the earphones and answer an incoming call or listen to the radio or any prerecorded music and retract the cable when not in use. Conventional retraction mechanisms inefficiently retract the cable, which result in tangling of the cable and difficulty in releasing the cable when required.
- Moreover, some retraction mechanisms comprise springs used for facilitating winding of the cable in a housing. However, these springs wear out, which disallow retraction of the cable into the housing, thereby causing an inconvenience to the user due to the inability to retract the cable into the housing. Therefore, there is need for additional or secondary provisions for retracting the cable into the housing independent of a single means for retracting the cable.
- Hence, there is a long felt but unresolved need for a retraction apparatus that retracts a retractable cable into a support housing, allows mounting of an electronic device adjacent to a retraction mechanism, and provides selective mechanisms for retracting the retractable cable into the support housing.
- This summary is provided to introduce a selection of concepts in a simplified form that are further described in the detailed description of the invention. This summary is not intended to identify key or essential inventive concepts of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended for determining the scope of the claimed subject matter.
- The retraction apparatus disclosed herein addresses the above stated need for an easy to use, compact, semi-permanently attached retraction apparatus that retracts a retractable cable into a support housing and allows mounting of an electronic device, for example, a mobile phone, a tablet computing device, etc., adjacent to a retraction mechanism. The retraction apparatus disclosed herein also provides selective mechanisms, for example, mechanical mechanisms, electric mechanisms, etc., for retracting the retractable cable into the support housing. The retraction apparatus disclosed herein is used for retracting a retractable cable that houses earphones, a microphone, earphones with integral or inline microphones, and/or any device that communicates a signal with the electronic device via the retractable cable.
- The retraction apparatus disclosed herein comprises a support housing and a retraction assembly. The support housing comprises one or more generally cylindrical spindles herein referred to as “spindles”. The retraction assembly is mounted on each of the spindles of the support housing. The retraction assembly comprises a spring member, a generally cylindrical spool member, a retractable cable, and a contact wheel member. The spring member is mounted on each of the spindles and affixed to the support housing. The generally cylindrical spool member, herein referred to as a “spool member”, is affixed to the spring member. The spool member comprises serrated plates that define a cylindrical section between the serrated plates for accommodating the retractable cable. In an embodiment, the serrated plates of the spool member comprise multiple projections that engageably communicate with the contact wheel member via a drive mechanism.
- The retractable cable is circularly wound around the cylindrical section defined between the serrated plates of the spool member. The retractable cable extends outwardly from the support housing. The spring member is compressed when the retractable cable is outwardly extended from the support housing. The spring member is decompressed when the retractable cable is retracted into the support housing. The first end of the retractable cable houses, for example, an earphone and/or a microphone. The second end of the retractable cable is connected to the cylindrical section defined between the serrated plates of the spool member.
- The contact wheel member is in engageable communication with the spool member via selective drive mechanisms. The contact wheel member is disposed in a predetermined location on the support housing. The contact wheel member is rotated to engageably communicate with a drive mechanism for rotating the spool member for retracting the retractable cable. In an embodiment, the contact wheel member is rearwardly exposed for enabling a user to manually rotate the contact wheel member for rotating the spool member via the drive mechanism. In another embodiment, a section of the contact wheel member is sidewardly exposed for enabling a user to manually rotate the contact wheel member for the rotation of the spool member via the drive mechanism. In another embodiment, a surface of the spool member is rearwardly exposed in the absence of the contact wheel member for enabling a user to manually rotate the spool member. In another embodiment, the spool member comprises one or more spherical depressions on the exposed surface of the spool member contactable by the user for the manual rotation of the contact wheel member.
- In an embodiment, the retraction assembly further comprises a latch member in engageable communication with the spool member. The latch member controls the rotation of the spool member. The projections of the serrated plates of the spool member engageably communicate with the latch member. The rotation of the spool member in a first direction disengages the latch member from the spool member to release the spool member for retraction of the retractable cable. The latch member prevents the rotation of the spool member in a second direction opposing the first direction.
- In an embodiment, the drive mechanism that engageably connects the contact wheel member to the spool member comprises one or more gears in engageable communication with the spool member for rotating the spool member, on rotation of the contact wheel member. In another embodiment, the drive mechanism comprises a motor operably connected to one or more gears that engageably communicate with the spool member for rotating the spool member on rotation of the motor. The spool member is selectively rotated by the motor or the contact wheel member via the gears.
- The retraction apparatus disclosed herein further comprises a printed circuit board fixedly attached to the spring member and embedded in the spool member. The printed circuit board is in electric communication with the retractable cable circularly wound around the spool member via the spring member for communicating, for example, an audio signal from an electronic device, for example, a mobile phone, a tablet computer, etc. The retraction apparatus disclosed herein further comprises an electrical contact fixedly attached to the printed circuit board, for example, via one or more lead wires, for electrically connecting the electronic device to the retraction assembly to communicate the audio signal from the electronic device via the retractable cable of the retraction assembly.
- The retraction apparatus disclosed herein further comprises a first enclosing panel detachably attached to a first opposing side of the support housing for enclosing the retraction assembly. The first enclosing panel exposes a surface of the contact wheel member and/or the spool member for manual rotation of the contact wheel member and/or the spool member respectively. The retraction apparatus further comprises a second enclosing panel detachably attached to a second opposing side of the support housing for enclosing the electronic device.
- The foregoing summary, as well as the following detailed description of the invention, is better understood when read in conjunction with the appended drawings. For the purpose of illustrating the invention, exemplary constructions of the invention are shown in the drawings. However, the invention is not limited to the specific components and methods disclosed herein.

FIGS. 1A-1C exemplarily illustrate exploded views of aretraction apparatus 100 for retracting aretractable cable 107. Theretraction apparatus 100 disclosed herein is used for retractingretractable cables 107 that houseearphones 109, a microphone, earphones 109 with integral or inline microphones, and/or any device that communicates a signal with anelectronic device 114 viaretractable cables 107. As used herein, the term “electronic device” refers to a device, for example, a mobile phone, a tablet computing device, a personal digital assistant, a music player, etc., that communicates a signal, for example, an audio signal, via theretractable cable 107. Theretraction apparatus 100 disclosed herein comprises asupport housing 101 and aretraction assembly 103. Theretraction assembly 103 is used for retracting theretractable cable 107 into thesupport housing 101. Thesupport housing 101 comprises one or more generallycylindrical spindles 102 herein referred to as “spindles”. Thespindles 102 extend outwardly from thesupport housing 101 in a generally perpendicular direction on one or more locations on thesupport housing 101. As exemplarily illustrated inFIGS. 1A-1C , twocylindrical spindles 102 extend outwardly from thesupport housing 101. - The
retraction assembly 103 is mounted on eachspindle 102 of thesupport housing 101. Theretraction assembly 103 comprises aspring member 104, a generallycylindrical spool member 105, and aretractable cable 107. Thespring member 104, for example, a coil spring, is mounted on eachspindle 102 and is affixed to thesupport housing 101. Thespring member 104 is wound in a clockwise direction or a counterclockwise direction. The generallycylindrical spool member 105, herein referred to as a “spool member”, is a low-flanged or unflanged cylinder on which a thread, a wire, a cable, a reel, a film, or a tape is wound for use. Thespool member 105 is spring-loaded and is affixed to thespring member 104. Thespool member 105 comprisesserrated plates 106 that define acylindrical section 105 a between theserrated plates 106 for accommodating theretractable cable 107. Thecylindrical section 105 a between theserrated plates 106 contacts and accommodates the woundretractable cable 107. Theserrated plates 106 of thespool member 105 have ratchet features for allowing rotation of thespool member 105 in only one direction. - In an embodiment, the
spool member 105 comprises one or morespherical depressions 105 c on an exposedsurface 105 b of thespool member 105 for enabling a user to manually rotate thespool member 105. In this embodiment, asurface 105 b of thespool member 105 is rearwardly exposed in the absence of acontact wheel member 121 exemplarily illustrated inFIG. 2A ,FIGS. 3A-3B , andFIGS. 4A-4C , for enabling a user to manually rotate thespool member 105. The user can contact thesespherical depressions 105 c for manually rotating thespool member 105. As exemplarily illustrated inFIGS. 1A-1C , about fivespherical depressions 105 c are provided on the exposedsurface 105 b of thespool member 105. In an embodiment, a singlespherical depression 105 c is provided on the exposedsurface 105 b of thespool member 105 for enabling a user to manually rotate thespool member 105. - The
retractable cable 107 is circularly wound around thecylindrical section 105 a defined between theserrated plates 106 of thespool member 105. Thefirst end 107 a of theretractable cable 107 houses, for example, anearphone 109 such as a headphone. Thesecond end 107 b of theretractable cable 107 is connected to thecylindrical section 105 a defined between theserrated plates 106 of thespool member 105. Theretractable cable 107 extends outwardly from thesupport housing 101. Thespring member 104 is compressed when theretractable cable 107 is outwardly extended from thesupport housing 101. Thespring member 104 is decompressed when theretractable cable 107 is retracted into thesupport housing 101. For example, when theretractable cable 107 is pulled out of thesupport housing 101, theretractable cable 107 triggers rotation of thespool member 105, which winds up or tightens thespring member 104. When thespool member 105 is released, thespring member 104 unravels and retracts theretractable cable 107. - The
retraction apparatus 100 further comprises acontact wheel member 121, as exemplarily illustrated inFIG. 2A ,FIGS. 3A-3B , andFIGS. 4A-4C , in engageable communication with thespool member 105 via adrive mechanism 122. Thecontact wheel member 121 is disposed in a predetermined location on thesupport housing 101. Theserrated plates 106 of thespool member 105 comprisemultiple projections 106 a around thecircumference 106 b of theserrated plates 106 that engageably communicate with thecontact wheel member 121 via thedrive mechanism 122 as disclosed in the detailed description ofFIGS. 2A-2B ,FIGS. 3A-3B , andFIGS. 4A-4C . Thecontact wheel member 121 is rotated to engageably communicate with thedrive mechanism 122 for rotating thespool member 105 for retracting theretractable cable 107. Therefore, in addition to providingspherical depressions 105 c on the exposedsurface 105 b of thespool member 105 for manually rotating thespool member 105, theretraction apparatus 100 disclosed herein provides thecontact wheel member 121 to allow the user to retract theretractable cable 107, for example, when thespring member 104 wears out. In another embodiment as disclosed in the detailed description ofFIGS. 4A-4C , the user can also retract theretractable cable 107 using an electrically drivenmotor 129. The user may selectively utilize thecontact wheel member 121 or thespherical depressions 105 c for manually rotating thespool member 105, if thebattery 128 a controlling themotor 129 wears out or themotor 129 fails. - In an embodiment, the
retraction apparatus 100 further comprises alatch member 108 in engageable communication with thespool member 105. Thelatch member 108 is in constant contact with thespool member 105 and controls rotation of thespool member 105. Theprojections 106 a of theserrated plates 106 of thespool member 105 around thecircumference 106 b of theserrated plates 106 also engageably communicate with thelatch member 108. Thelatch member 108 comprises abutton 108 a andclamp 108 b with forkedsprings 108 c. On pressing thebutton 108 a of thelatch member 108 and pulling theretractable cable 107 out of thesupport housing 101, thespool member 105 rotates causing the forkedsprings 108 c of thelatch member 108 to collapse. The rotation of thespool member 105 tightens thespring member 104, thereby creating a tension in thespring member 104. Theprojections 106 a on theserrated plates 106 of thespool member 105 pass the forkedsprings 108 c. The forked springs 108 c snap behind theprojections 106 a on theserrated plates 106 thereby preventing thespool member 105 from rotating in a direction opposite to the direction of pull of theretractable cable 107. As theretractable cable 107 housing, for example, theearphones 109 are pulled out of thesupport housing 101, thelatch member 108 locks thespool members 105 in place at any given length. On depressing thebutton 108 a, theclamp 108 b linearly slides to disengage the forkedsprings 108 c from thespool member 105 and unravel thespring member 104. Thespool member 105 winds up under the tension created in thespring member 104 to retract theretractable cable 107 into thesupport housing 101. Theearphones 109 housed on separateretractable cables 107 can be retracted independently or simultaneously. - The
retraction apparatus 100 disclosed herein further comprises a printedcircuit board 110 fixedly attached to thespring member 104 and embedded in thespool member 105. The printedcircuit board 110 is in electric communication with theretractable cable 107 circularly wound around thespool member 105 via thespring member 104 for communicating, for example, an audio signal from anelectronic device 114, for example, a mobile phone. For the purpose of illustration, the detailed description refers to mounting and accommodating a mobile phone within thesupport housing 101 and anenclosing panel 117, however the scope of theretraction apparatus 100 disclosed herein may be extended to mount and accommodate other electronic devices, for example, tablet computing devices, personal digital assistants (PDAs), music players, portable media players, cordless phones, and other electronic devices that utilizeretractable cables 107 to communicate signals, for example, audio signals. Theretraction apparatus 100 disclosed herein further comprises apower switch 118 for switching theelectronic device 114 on and off and aplug 112 to plug in theelectronic device 114, for example, to a power supply. Thepower switch 118 enables the user to activate or deactivate theelectronic device 114 without taking theelectronic device 114 out of theretraction apparatus 100. Theretraction assembly 103 disclosed herein further comprises anelectrical contact 111 fixedly attached to the printedcircuit board 110, for example, via one or morelead wires 113, for electrically connecting theelectronic device 114 to theretraction assembly 103 to communicate the audio signal from theelectronic device 114 via theretractable cable 107 of theretraction assembly 103. - The
retraction apparatus 100 disclosed herein further comprises afirst enclosing panel 115 detachably attached to a firstopposing side 101 a of thesupport housing 101 for enclosing theretraction assembly 103. Theearphones 109 are accommodated inholders 116 defined on thesupport housing 101. Theholders 116 allow for safe storage of theearphones 109 when they are not in use. Thefirst enclosing panel 115 exposes thecontact wheel member 121 or asurface 105 b of thespool member 105 for manual rotation of thecontact wheel member 121 or thespool member 105 respectively. Theretraction apparatus 100 further comprises asecond enclosing panel 117 detachably attached to a secondopposing side 101 b of thesupport housing 101 for enclosing theelectronic device 114. Thesecond enclosing panel 117 enables secure storage of theelectronic device 114. Theelectronic device 114 is mounted on the secondopposing side 101 b of thesupport housing 101 and enclosed between thesecond enclosing panel 117 and thesupport housing 101 usingfasteners 119, for example, screws, adhesives, etc. Theretraction apparatus 100 therefore creates a modular packaging platform for theelectronic device 114. Theretraction apparatus 100 further comprises apower supply input 120 connected to theelectronic device 114 for supplying power to theelectronic device 114 and amotor 129 as disclosed in the detailed description ofFIG. 4C . -
FIG. 2A exemplarily illustrates an external view of an embodiment of theretraction apparatus 100, showing a rearwardly exposedcontact wheel member 121. In this embodiment, thecontact wheel member 121 is rearwardly exposed for enabling a user to manually rotate thecontact wheel member 121 for rotating thespool member 105 via thedrive mechanism 122 exemplarily illustrated inFIG. 2B . Thecontact wheel member 121 is disposed on top of thespool members 105. Thecontact wheel member 121 comprises, for example, a singlespherical depression 121 a. A user may use a finger to contact thespherical depression 121 a for manually rotating thecontact wheel member 121. Thecontact wheel member 121 is configured to provide an improved grip to the user for manual rotation. -
FIG. 2B exemplarily illustrates an internal view of the embodiment of theretraction apparatus 100 shown inFIG. 2A , where the rearwardly exposedcontact wheel member 121 engages thespool members 105 of theretraction assembly 103 via thedrive mechanism 122. In this embodiment, thedrive mechanism 122 comprises one ormore gears spool member 105 for rotating eachspool member 105, on rotation of thecontact wheel member 121. Thecontact wheel member 121 contacts thelatch member 108. The forked springs 108 c of thelatch member 108 are in constant contact with theprojections 106 a of theserrated plates 106 of thespool members 105. Thelatch member 108 engageably communicates with eachspool member 105. As exemplarily illustrated inFIG. 2B , thedrive mechanism 122 comprises afirst gear 123 and asecond gear 124 engageably connected to eachspool member 105 for rotating eachspool member 105. Theteeth 123 a of thefirst gear 123 are in engageable communication with theteeth 124 a of thesecond gear 124. The manual rotation of thecontact wheel member 121 by the user drives thefirst gear 123, which in turn drives thesecond gear 124 by the engageable communication of theteeth first gear 123 in combination with thesecond gear 124 rotates thespool members 105. When thecontact wheel member 121 is contacted or pressed by the user, thecontact wheel member 121 disengages thelatch member 108 and/or thegears spool members 105, thereby causing thespool members 105 to wind back and retract theretractable cable 107.
