JOHN C. LESTER AND CHARLES J. FOX, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENTAIN FIRE-EXTINGUISHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,183, dated March 12, 1878; application filed March 15, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN C. LESTER and CHARLES J. FOX, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire Extinguishers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which A is a section of a railway passenger-car; B, a stove in the same; C, the stove-pipe; D, a water-tank; E, a pipe leading from the bottom or near the bottom of the tank D into the stove-pipe C, as shown in Figures 1 and 2; or, if desired, the pipe E can open directly into the stove B, as shown in Fig. 3. F is a ball resting on a cup or bracket on top of the tank D. H is a valve closing the orifice of the pipe E where it opens out of the tank D. G is a chain attached at one end to the ball F, and at the other end to the valve H.
When the car A is thrown from an upright position, so as to incline the tank D from a vertical line, at an angle of twenty degrees or more, the ball F will roll from its bracket in which it rests, and by its weight raise the valve H from the mouth of the pipe E, thus allowing the water from the tank D to pour through the pipe E into the stove B, through the stove-pipe C, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or directly into the stove B from the pipe E, as shown in Fig. 3, thus extinguishing the fire in the stove B.
Theltank D can be used as a water-cooler in summer, or at any season, if desired.
What we claim as new, as our invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
.1. The combination of the ball F with the chain G, the valve H, the tank D, the pipe E, and the stove B, as shown and described, and. for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the ball F with the chain G, the valve H, the tank D, pipe E, pipe C, and stove B, as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
