This invention relates to shoes and more particularly to the production of the rear portion of the shoe which is so shaped and constructed that much of the discomfort experienced heretofore tions as formerly made is eliminated.

In certain types of shoes particularly of the low type discomfort is often produced by the upper rear part of the shoe rubbing, chafing or cutting the foot of the wearer. According to this invention, a shoe is provided which furnishes adequate and proper supportfor the ankle and at the same time obviates theinflammation, chafing and discomfort due to the upper rear part of the shoe cutting into the leg of the wearer.

With the above and other objects in View, the

invention consists of in general of certain novel details. of construction fully described, illustratedin the accompanying drawing and specifically claimed.

In the embodiment of the invention as herein disclosed numeral I designates the body of the shoe and 2C and 3 the front and rear portions respectively. At the rear of the shoe beneath the outer covering 4 is the counter stiffener 5. The back of the counter stiffener and the covering is cut out in substantally V-shaped formation to provide a notch 6, the'purpose of which as pointed out is to avoid the rear top of the shoe from bearing against the foot of the wearer.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a simple, efficient and inexpensive means of making the ordinary shoe more comfortable to wear and which furnishes adequate and proper support for the ankle. Y

Having described my invention, I claim:

A house slipper including a sole, a vamp portion, a counter of stiff material attached to the rear part of said sole to embrace the heel of a foot, said counter extending above the point at i which the heel has its greatest width and having the upper parts of its sides inclined inward to closely embrace the heel whereby the rear of the shoeis prevented from slipping downwardly on the foot, said counter having a narrow V-shaped notch formed in its rear upper edge to prevent pressure on the tendon achilles, the sides of said counter having their edges curved downwardly from said notch to the slipper sole, said counter sides being free from the vamp portion of the slipper, said counter forming the sole means for holding the slipper on the heel of a wearer, and a covering for said counter conforming in shape and size thereto.
