assignor to Peyton du Pont, Incorporated; a. corporation of Delaware Application January 22, 1934, Serial Not 707,644 3 Claims. erase-3) 7.: Thisinvention appertains to improvements intransferring-devices which are utilized to transfer relatively fragile materials such as slabs of marble from a'place of storage to a machine for performing one of a number of operations necessaryto finish the product.
Slabs of unfinished marble are usually stored in'an. upright position sothat whenever it is necemary: to finish amarble slab of. a desired thickness or quality,;, these features and characteristics-:may be easily observed. ;',T h8' marble. slabs are then transferred to a finishing machine such as a saw or a planer which areprovided with a horizontal. bed for receiving the marble Heretofore, the transferring of marble slabs froman upright position to the horizontal machine bedsrequiredzamal ual operation engaging several workmen and-sofar as Iain awarepno attempt has been made tosimplify this transferringoperationt While marblehas enduring.
ualities, yet, when it: is in the form of relatively thinlslabs havlng'arr area of several score square f eet,- it is comparatively fragile due to imperfectionsccaused. by loosening of the seams or jointsa fIfhis is especially true of the highly decorative marble, since the veining which gives this marble its distinctive appearance is formed by a system of complex join-ts indicating an inherent We kne s; A.
5 Hence, when marble slabs; and especially those of; the class discussed above, are transferredmanually from an upright to a horizontal position, the lack; of; supportforrthe underside of the marble slab'and the unequal strains atthe edges thereof as the several workmen lift the slab, cause seams or joints. in the. marble slab to open. Whenmarble slabs with open seams are in the various processes of manufacture, aconsiderable portion of the marble will I shatter, resulting in excessive waste and increased cost of production. It isthereforethdmain object of this inven tionto obviatethese disadvantages by providing transferring mechanism having a hinged table on which marble slabs may: be receivedfin an upright positiom the hinged table being adapted to be swung to a horizontal position from which position the marble} slab may be easily skidded onto the horizontal bed of a marble working ac e-Q y Y A further objectof my invention resides in the provision of a movable transferring device comprising a hinged top on which marble slabs may bezreceived in .an upright position, the hinged tablebeing adapted to be swung to ahorizontal position to rest upon a suitable supporting surface, and a cushioning means for the hinged table arranged. in a manner whereby the hinged table comes to rest gently on its supporting surface Without transmitting undue shocks to the o marble carried by such hinged table.
Other objects and advantageswhich are inherent in the construction of my improved transferring device will be apparent as the following specification is read in connection. accompanying drawings in which. I
Figure 1 is a front elevation of myjimproved transferring'device; y
Figure 3 is a central vertical section of the 15.
which is mounted on the casters or rollers l2.
Carriedby the base frame II is a rigid table M, having a horizontal supporting surface dieposed a substantial distance above the base frame H but preferably below the. plane of the horizontal bed of a marble working machine (not shown).
The base frame I I includes a perforate top web l6 from which extend other webs forming the perforate end walls I], rear wall l8 and front Wall l9. By this web formatiomthe necessary rigidity is imparted to my improved transferring device and at the same time the weight thereof does not exceed reasonable limits. Due to its relativelyslight weight the transferring mechanism may be moved manually; although if found expedient,
a power drive therefor may be utilized.
' At each perforateend wall I! there is formed a bearing member as constituting a bearing for the' shaft 2| which extends from one end wall to the other end wall. This shaft Zl-carries a table 22 and constitutes an axis about which this table pivots. Thepivotally movable table 22 isof box likeshalpejhaving' a bottom web 23, adapted to rest on the" horizontal surface l5 of the rigid table M; Intersecting horizontal and transversewebs 24 form the upper surface'of the movable'table .movable table 22 is.swung to the position as ,shown in Figure 3. It will be observed that with the 10::
the front wall leis declined downwardlyso that it is pitched at a slight angle from the perpendicuin its upright positionohto the upper surface, of the movable table; the lower edge of the marble; slab rests on the ledge 25 extending outwardly beyond the plane of the uppersurfac'en With the marble'slab in this upright position on the mov-" able table, his then ready to be returnedto. a horizontal position as shown in Figure 21 and it I will be observed 'th'at'when the movable table'r'ests on the'upper surface of the rigid table M, the
greater portion of the, movable tame is supported on the'ri'gid table, thus insuring asteady supportg If desired, a' hook 50 may engage the handl"3 3 to prevent; accidental displacement-of the table scribed;
ioning deviceof the character :now to be-de-v- An arm 261 is carried. by theomovablel table22 and it is provided with an arcuate slot 2"!- i which engagesa; link 28as at 29; The-linkZifis ing the piston the piston 35 connected l3O'- 1Z)'.'lSlZ0Il'I'Od. '30 having a piston-3 l on one end thereof reciprocablymounted in a cylin- 32 is filled witha fluid such as oil and as the-piston moves'in'thecylindenthe' oil is forced from one side of the-pistontdthe other When the movable table 22gwithiits marble slab M is in a position as shown ins-Figure 3,;aworkman graspsthe handle 33. and pulls the movable table toward the horizontal. .The s1ot2l-permits' freejmovement'of this movable table, to a position shown by the conventionallines at P in'Fig'uIeB, and this position issuchthat the combined weight of the tableand marble'above the pivot" shaft :Zl' permits the table to swing toward the horizontal of itself. Such initial movementofthe table2-2 I causes thearm 26 to engagethe link 8 formov- 3.! toward the cylinder head 34., As moves'toward this head 34,7the oil in the cylinder-32 will pass through thepassage 35 and the orifice 3S"andthence through theport 31 totheopposite side of the piston by meansof Sports such as 38. Since the passage 35 and the *ports 31- anutsa are comparatively largeythe sec 1 onda'ry-ldownward movement of the table 22 and the marble slabwill not be at a rate whichtwould betoo slow for practicabilty: However, when the piston 3! begins to cut off the passage 35, therate ofdescension will gradually diminish thereby ,al-"
lowing the table22to-come to rest upon" the'rigid tablel 4 very gently. Inits later phase, the piston 3i;forces the oil"through-theorifice ,36, the effec- -t'ive'arealof which maybe adjusted by means of the valve 39 Afterthe marbleslab M has been skiddedofi the table 22 onto a horizontal bed of a finishing machine, the movable table may be easilyreturned to its'upright position for loading; When the movable table 22 is in the position a's'shown inv Figure 2, the piston ,'3I .is closely adjacent the cylinder head 34 as shown'by the conventional lines in Figure 4. As the table 22" is raisedg'the oil rearward of the piston will be' compressed and thus'open thefrelief valves: 40 of the piston 3|, causing the oil to" flow rapidly totheopposite side, of the" piston '31; Continued downward.
v arr-upper horizontal surface disposed above said ,base .frame, said rigidtable' including end, rear and front support members extending upwardly from said base frame, said front support member being declined from the marginal edge of said horizontahsurface downwardly at a slight angle from the perpendicular, bearing members carried by said rigid table adjacent theintersection of the horizontal upper surface and the-upper edge I I I ofsaid front supports ofsaid'rigid table, a hori In order that theimovable tablemaynotstrike' the "rigid table. with considerablewforce which might damage the marble slab,-I provide a cushzontally disposed shaft journalled in, said bearing members; a m'ovable table' carried by said hori'-- zontally extending shaftpsaid'table in its one extreme position having one-portion thereof on the upper horizontal s'urface of said rigid table and in' its other extreme position resting "on'thedeclined frontsupport member forretaining said movable table in a position pitched'slightly from the perpendicular, and means for cushioning only the descent "of' said"movable= table from such upper surface of 'said rigidtable; v I
