2 Claims (c1.114-21s) lug for the purpose of This invention relates to cleats especially adapted for boats orwherever it is desired to make a rope or cable fast and has for the primary object the provision of a device of the above stated character which will secure a rope or cable against ppage and permit easy and quick release of the rope or cable by a single pull on one end of the latter.
With these and other objects in View this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a plan view illustrating a cleat with a rope applied thereto and constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view illustrating the cleat 'th a rope applied thereto, wherein the rope is provided with a closed loop. v
Figure 3 is a side elevation partly in section illustrating the same.
Figure 4 is an end elevation partly in section illustrating the same.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicates a base adapted to be secured to a support 2, which may be some part of a boat, or any other device to which a cable or rope is to be releasably secured. The base is shown as being of substantially triangular shape, however, it is to be understood that the base may be of any other desired shape. The base adjacent each end is provided with an opening to, receive screws or like fasteners 3 for anchoring the base in position on a boat or other support.
A spur 4 is formed integrally with one end of the base and is spaced from the support 2 so that a rope 5 may be passed about the spur between the latter and the support and against one end of the base. Said end of the base at opposite sides of the spur is provided with concaved faces 6 which merge into grooves 7 formed in the top face of the base and which open outwardly through the opposite side edges of the base. The grooves 1 form shoulders 8 at opposite corners of the base and said shoulders are arranged on opposite sides of the spur.
A lug or stop 9 is formed integrally with the base I and rises from the top face of said base and gradually increases'in width towards one end, as shown in Figure l, with said end lying between the grooves 'l and adjacent to and in alignment with the spur 4. Said end of the stop or lug is concaved to form a seat I and. the opposite sides of said lug or stop are concaved to form grooves I I The grooves l I and seat l0 form overhanging flanges to the lug or stop so that a rope 12 having a closed loop may be positioned over the stop or I ferred embodiment of connecting the rope l2 to the cleat.
To connect the rope tive grooves l and against the stop thereby obviating any possibility of the rope slipping upon the spur. To detach the rope from the cleat either with said rope slack or under strain, the free end 14 of said rope is pulled upon sliding the parallel portions l3 from under the rope and thereby releasing the rope 5 from the spur. This form of cleat permits a rope to be easily and quickly applied thereto and will effectively prevent slipping of the rope relative to the cleat.
The holding or gripping of the rope increases by the increased strain upon the rope and will permit the rope to be easily and quickly freed from the cleat by simply pulling upon the free end of the rope.
While I have shown and described the premy invention, it will be understood thatminor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed.
Having described the invention, I claim: 1. A rope cleat comprising a base, a spur integral with the base and projecting beyond one end of the latter to have a rope passed thereabout,'said base having. grooves extending from.

A rope cleat comprising a base, a spur integral with the base and projectingbeyond one end of the latter to have a rope passed thereabout, said base having grooves extending from opposite edges through said end of the base at opposite sides of the spur and either adapted to seat a looped portion of the rope, lugs formed on said base outwardly of the grooves and having opposing faces thereof concaved and merging into walls of the grooves to be engaged by the looped portion of the rope, and a lug integral with the base and rising from the top face of the latter and increasing in width towards one end with said end spaced from the spur and located between the grooves.
