My invention relates to certain improvements in padlocks of the type having a slidingshackle engaged by a locking spring located in a housing, .the spring being operated by a` key-controlled .1.18 tumbler mechanism.- I
One object of my invention is to so design a lock of the type above mentioned that it can be manufactured at a reasonable price withoutimpairing its eiciency. Y t
u A further object of the inventionris to so design the spring housing and the tumbler insert that theyvcan be readily assembled and inserted in the lock casing between the posts of the lock.
A still further object is to provide a bridge in u whichthe disc tumbler plug ismountedso as to allow the plug to freely turn, the bridge holding the plug in position in the casing in respect to the 'spring housing.
The invention also relates to certain details of gq construction which will be described hereinafter.

The shackle 5 is of the ordinary sliding and vswinging type and has a long leg 6 and a short leg l. Therlong leg in the present instance is notched at 8 8 on" both sides to receive the' two arms 9 9 of the locking spring I0 shown in Fig. ll1. This locking spring I0 isklocatedjin a spring housing I'I, shown inl Figs. 9 and 10 .when the arms of the spring engage the shackle,
it'is locked in the closed position. When a key is inserted in the cylinder plug of 'a locking'assembly and turned, the projection I9 of the plug 20 that extends into the housing I I and between the arms 9 9 of the locking spring I0 willspreald the spring arms apart and release the shackle which will'b'e projected by the ejecting spring I2 w35 f which is l-ocated between 'the endof the longnleg of the she-ome and bottom of the easing ofyg.

In Fig. 20 the side extension 30o of the cylinder 23o has lugs 33 at each side which extend to the I plates of the casing. ' 1; The combination'iin a padlock of a two-part casing; upper and "lower nposts connecting the two parts of the casing; a shack-lemounted'in the casing; a locking'yspring housing extending from side to side of the'casing and resting against v the upper posts, said housing having holes forl the `passageof the-'shackle and having aslot in its `lower-plate; aflocking'spring in the housing' en- 'having a reduced portion extending through the b ottom of the casing, Ysaid key plug having aprojection extending through the yspring housing and engaging the locking spring. 1

The combination in a. padlock of a two-part casing; upper and lower posts connecting the two parts of the casing;y Yashackle' mountedin `the `casing; a locking spring housing extending from side to side of the'casing and resting againstthe upper posts, `said housing having Yholes for the passage of' the shackleand having a slotin its lower plate; a locking spring in the housing engagingthe shackle; a' locking assembly including a keyplug located in the casing between the housing and the bottom of thecasing and between-the lower posts, a flange on the key plug forming part of the locking assembly having a reduced portion extending through YtheK bottom of the casing,- said plug having a projectionfextending through Ythe 'spring housing and engagingthe locking` spring;
a bridge piece enclosing the key plug and forming'part of `the locking assembly and extending between the flange of the key plug and the underside of the housing,` thefside walls ofI the bridge piece having Aopenings therein for discs of v the plug, the bridge piece'acting as a' shell for ,the Ykey plug and alsoiacting to hold the'several parts together.

4. The combination in a padlock of a casing; a notched shackle located in the casing, a transverse locking spring housing having upper and lower plates and a connecting member, said housing having holes for the passage of the notched portion of the shackle, and a slot for the passage of an operating extension of a plug, a locking spring having arms and located in the housing; a ilanged cylinder plug having a keyway at one end and a projection at the other end, the projection extending through the slot in the spring housing and between the arms of the locking spring; the housing having a curved tongue engaging the loop of the locking spring and means between the flange of the plug and the spring housing for holding the parts in the casing and forming a bearing for the plug.

The combination in a padlock, of a casing, a shackle, said shackle having along leg and a short leg, this shackle having a notch arranged to be engaged by a locking spring, a transverse spring housing, a locking spring therein, a locking assembly mounted in the casing between the transverse housing and the bottom of the casing, an ejecting spring between the bottom of the casing and the end of the long arm of the shackle, and a notched plate mounted in the bottom of the casing between the side of the casing and the locking assembly and encircling the ejected spring to hold said spring in position.

The combination in a padlock, of a casing, a shackle therein having a long and short arm, an ejecting spring for the shackle, the long leg of the shackle having a notch therein, a transverse locking spring housing, a U-shaped locking spring mounted'in the housing and having an enlarged circular end, the housing having a segmental tongue partly encircling the end of the spring and having a. short tongue to hold the spring in proper engagement in the casing, a cylinder plug mounted in a casing between the housing and the bottom of the casing, said plug having a `key-way at one end and a projection at the opposite end extending into the housing and engaging the arms of the locking spring so that on turning the plug by a key, the arms will be spread apart to release the shackle from the spring, the ejecting spring ejecting the shackle so that the short arm of the shackle will clear the housing. f
7. 'Ihe combination of a casing, a shackle mounted in the casing, a transverse spring housing located in the casing, a locking spring mounted in the housing and arranged to engage the shackle, a cylinder plug mounted between the locking spring housing and the bottom of the casing and having a key-way therein, the said plug having a projection extending into the housing and engaging the locking spring; a cylinder surrounding the plug and having a lateral extension; and a. plate, having a long arm held against the side of the casing and a short arm bent at an angle with respect to the long arm and having a notch therein into which the projection of the cylinder extends. 8. The combination in a padlock, of a casing; a shackle; a housing; locking mechanism within the housing; a key operated cylinder plug for actuating the locking mechanism; sliding discs in the plug arranged to be engaged by a key inserted in the plug; a bridge piece enclosing the plug and having side openings therein to allow movement of the discs; one edge of each opening fitting the plug closely to prevent the turning of the plug until the discs are entirely withdrawn by the insertion of a key having the proper bittings.

The combination in a padlock orl a two-part casing; a shackle; upper posts connecting the two-parts of the casing; a transversely arranged locking spring housing resting against said posts, a locking spring located in the housing; said housing having holes for the passage of one leg of the shackle which is engaged by the locking spring; a locking assembly fitting between the I `bottom of the casing and the spring housing and holding the spring housing against the posts; the locking assembly having a key plug provided with'a projection extending into the housing and engaging the locking spring, so that when av key is inserted in the key plug and the plug turned, the arms of the locking spring will be spread apart releasing the shackle.
