My invention relates to improvements in athleticA shoes and particularly to the Spikes or cleats for athletic shoes. The spike or cleat of my invention is primarily 5 designed for use on golf Shoes and shoes of this type. It is one of the objects of my invention to provide a cleat orrspike for athletic Shoes of the, f above type which will provide a pike which may y be formed of hardened Steel or like material and which may be renewed from time to time.

In golf shoes particularly the greatest wear comes on the Spike. The wearer tramp over Stone and concrete runways going `to and from the club out the spike. By providing a removable spike that portion which Wears the greatest may be renewed from time to time and by providing a spike which may be formed of hardened steel the wear may be reduced to the minimum.

For the purpose of disclosing my invention I have illustrated an embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawing in which l is a bottom plan of an athletic shoe having my improved spike attached thereto;

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated I provide a Socket member l which is internally screw-threaded and is provided with an annular iiange 2 having struck-up thereon ears such as 3. This socket member is inserted through the sole 4 of the shoe, or a heel lift, with the annularflange 2 on the inner face and the Socket member, it will be noted, extends practically to the outer surface of the sole. The ears 3 bite into the sole and-prevent the socket member from rotating. The inner sole or Soles 5 lie over the bottom of the socket member so that it will not come in contact with the foot. Cooperating with the socket member is an outer clamping member 6 provided with an externally screw-threaded projection l adapted to screw into the Socket member and this clamping member 6 is provided with a central opening through which extends the spike 8. This spike at its bottom is provided with an `annular flange 9 of greater diameter than the opening inA the house to the golf grounds which tends to grindA down the spikes and furthermore therwearing of the shoe even on the golf course will tend to wear (Cl. SI5-59) clamping member 6 so that when the clamping member is screwed into position the spike is held VVin place against longitudinal displacement. The outer end of thisspike may be tapered as shown or may be sharpened, asy desired. I claim as my invention:

1. The combination with a sole, of a socket member adapted to be projected through the sole and provided with an annular flange bearing upon the inner surface of the sole, Said socket member being internally screw-threaded, a clamping member externally screw-threaded and adapted for insertion in said socket member and having a centrally disposed opening therethrough, an annular ange on said clamping member for engagement with the outer surface of the sole, a hardened steel pin extending through the central aperture of said clamping member and beyond the surface thereof and having an annular ange at its base adapted to be engaged by said clamping member to hold said pin against vertical displacement.

2. rThe combination with a sole, of a socket member extending therethrough and including an internally-threaded socket projecting through the sole and an annular flange arranged to bear againstthe inner surface of the sole, a clamping member cooperating with said socket member including an externally threaded projection adapted to take into the internally-threaded socket, said clamping member being provided with a centrally disposed aperture, a pin extending through said aperture and seating on the bottom of said socket member, and means on the base of said pin-engaged by said clamping member for securing the pin against verticaly displacement.
