Description

    BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention generally relates to water pumps, and more specifically, to a wear plate kit for a 496 style/Mercruiser(R) brass water pump.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • In one aspect of the present invention, a device for repairing a pump having a base assembly, a rotor, and an upper assembly includes a first wear plate to be positioned between the base assembly and the rotor; a second wear plate to be positioned between the base assembly and the upper assembly; and a third wear plate to be positioned between the rotor and the upper assembly.
  • In another aspect of the present invention, a device for repairing a 496 style brass water pump includes a first wear plate to be positioned between a base assembly of the water pump and a rotor of the water pump; a second wear plate to be positioned between the base assembly and an upper assembly of the water pump; and a third wear plate to be positioned between the rotor and the upper assembly; wherein the wear plates are adapted to repair wear to the pump caused by the rotor.
  • In yet another aspect of the present invention, a method of repairing a pump having a base assembly, a rotor, and an upper assembly includes positioning a first wear plate between the base assembly and the rotor; positioning a second wear plate between the base assembly and the upper assembly; and positioning a third wear plate between the rotor and the upper assembly; thereby repairing wear to the pump caused by the rotor.
  • These and other features, aspects and advantages of the present invention will become better understood with reference to the following drawings, description and claims.
  • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
  • FIG. 1 depicts a top view of an embodiment of a wear plate according the present invention;
  • FIG. 2 depicts a top view of an embodiment of a lower gasket according the present invention;
  • FIG. 3 depicts a top view of an embodiment of a shim according the present invention;
  • FIG. 4 depicts a top view of an embodiment of an upper gasket according the present invention; and
  • FIG. 5 depicts an exploded perspective view of an embodiment of a 496 style water pump that has been repaired according to the present invention.
  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
  • The following detailed description is of the best currently contemplated modes of carrying out exemplary embodiments of the invention. The description is not to be taken in a limiting sense, but is made merely for the purpose of illustrating the general principles of the invention, since the scope of the invention is best defined by the appended claims.
  • Various inventive features are described below that can each be used independently of one another or in combination with other features.
  • Broadly, an embodiment of the present invention generally provides a wear plate kit for 496 style Mercruiser(R) brass water pump.
  • An embodiment may repair surface damage on a 496/brass water pump, by installing stainless steel wear plates to damaged section of the water pump. An embodiment may replace and repair worn out surfaces on brass water pumps with stainless steel wear plates.
  • An embodiment may include a wear plate that may drop into the pump housing to cover up the damaged brass housing. To install an embodiment utilizing a Mercruiser(R) version 1, install a 0.047 shim, install impeller, then a gasket and then a wear plate. Apply silicon to the wear mark and bolt it back together. In an embodiment utilizing Mercruiser(R) version 2, drop a 0.024 inner wear plate into the housing, then install an impeller, an inner wear, a second impeller, a factory o-ring, an outer wear plate, an outer gasket, and a silicon the groove.
  • As depicted in FIG. 1, an gasket 12 may be made of a of a pliable substance such as rubber or other gasket material. The gasket 12 may have six bolt holes 14 and two main apertures 16.
  • As depicted in FIG. 2, an embodiment of a wear plate 20 may be stainless steel, and have a athickness of 0.024″. To work with a 496 style water pump, the wear plate 20 has six bolt holes 22 and two main apertures 24. The gasket 12 of FIG. 1 may be the same size and shape as the wear plate 20, which both match the surface of the base assembly of the water pump. The two first apertures 16 and the twos second apertures 24 are common to each other, in that they line up when assembled, to accommodate water flow through an engine such as the Mercruiser(R) engine as well as the rotor for said engine.
  • As depicted in FIG. 3, an embodiment of a gasket 30 may have an aperture in the center 32 made of empty space.
  • As depicted in FIG. 4, a gasket 10 may include a second gasket 40, having six bolt holes 42, two main apertures 44, and a central aperture 46 made of empty space.
  • As depicted in FIG. 5, an example of a 496 style/Mercruiser(R) water pump 50 may be repaired with an embodiment of the present invention. After the pump 50 has been repaired, it will include a base assembly 52 pressed against the gasket 12 of FIG. 1 and the wear plate 20 of FIG. 2, a rotor 54, and the second gasket 40 of FIG. 4. The pump 50 fits against an interior gasket 56 for the upper assembly 58 that retains the rotating assembly 60. The round wear plate 30 of FIG. 3 fits inside the upper assembly 58, and is a wear plate for the rotor 54.
  • Embodiments may be manufactured by a machinist. In an embodiment utilizing a first version, a shim is included. In an embodiment utilizing version 2, no shim is needed and no grinding on the brackets is needed.
  • It should be understood, of course, that the foregoing relates to exemplary embodiments of the invention and that modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the following claims.
