WILLIAM DARBY, OF GHILLIOOTHE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO FRANK B. MOFFITT, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN RlDGE-SADDLES FOR ROOFS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,098, dated March 12, 1878; application filed July 27, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DARBY, of Ghillicothe, in the county of Peoria, in the State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Ridge-Saddles for Roofs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which like letters of reference refer to like parts, and in which- Figure 1 represents an end view; Fig. 2, a longitudinal elevation.
The object of this invention is an improvement in metal saddles for covering theridges of wooden roofs, or in other places in a roof where an angle or ridge is formed by the combing or culmination of two sides of a roof.
The tubular portion at the apex of the same is designed to form a continuous ridge, each section locked within the other, forming, together, a ventilating-passage to carry ofi' dampness, the whole fastened down to the roof by nails through the lateral flaps.
In the drawings, which show one of the best forms in which I construct this device, A A are two adjoining sections of my roof-saddle, the end of one entering that of the other, and held together by the nearly circular tube or pipe at, in such a mode as to exclude wet and dust at the joints, and to form a continuous tube for ventilating or carrying off dampness from the roof or its interior.
I make this saddle preferably of metal, as being strong and elastic, the better to allow each section to fit intoits neighbor, and be retained by the tension or springiness of the tube a, which really acts as a spring in drawing the flaps b 0 together upon its neighbor,
to the surface of the shingles or roof, without intermediate foundation, substantially as and for the purposes described.
