HOLDER AIRM FOR DOORS Filed Feb. 23, 1932 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 member 20, and held in place by the adjusting nut 35. The height of the boss 2| should be at least equal to the thickness of the ring-like member 20, so that the latter will not be clamped between the member [9 and the washer 34.
A lever 36 is pivoted to the ears 30 and 3| by means of the pivot pin 31 passing through the openings 32 and 33, this lever having a detent 3B which engages in the recess 24 of the member I9. The lever held in'this position by the fusible link 39, secured at one end to the end of the lever by the screw 40, and having its other end engaging the pin or peg 29. The detent 38 and recess 24 are so shaped that when the fusible link is 5 rendered ineffective and the end of the lever 36 is released, a rotating force applied to the arm i5 will withdraw the detent from the recess and thus release the arm I5 from the member l9 and permit the arm to swing about the boss 2|.
20 It will be understood that ordinarily the arm I 5 t member l9, the opening .of the door will result in theheadportion I8 of the arm l4 being screwed upwardly on the threaded portion 25 of the pivot bolt until the upper surface of the head frictionally engages the lower flat surface of the elementlilto bindthe two parts together and hold the door open. The position at which the door will beheld open in thismanner may be varied byadjustmentof the nut 35, so that the head 18 will haveto be moved a greater or less distance along the pivotboltbefore it is frictionally engaged with the element l9. i 'if, when the door is held in open position by the frictional engagement described, the fusible linkv should be subjected to' sufficient heat to render it'ineffective, the end of the lever 36 would be 'free and the springpressure applied to'the arms 4 and/15 by the door closerwill result in throwing the detent 38' out of engagement with the recess 24,so'that'the arm l5 and member l9 are no; longer locked together and the arm l5 will be free to turn about the boss 2|, although the member J9 will still befrictionally locked to the head [8} This will, of course, permit the door to.close in e'xactlythesame manner'asthough the frictional engagement was released.
In Fig. 8 of the drawings I have shown a slightl'y l'm'oidified form of'm'y invention. This modifi 55 cation is the same as thatshown' in Figs. 1 to 7 ofthe drawings, withthe' exception of the lever 35?. This lever instead'of having an opening to receivevthe pin passing through the. ears 3| is provided with a hooked end 4|, which merely hooks around the body of the pin 31. The lever 36$ is, therefore, not pivoted to the arm l5, but i'sidetachably'engaged with the ,pinand held in this position by. the fusible link 39, which engages -,th'e end'of the lever 35 and engages the pin 29 on the end of thearm l5. In this instance, when the fusible link givesway, the detent 38 will be forced out of the recess 24,. all as heretofore describedand the lever 36 being'merely-eng'aged with the pin'3lwill fall'to the fioor immediately releasing'the arm l5. In other respects, the arrangementshown in-Fig. 8 is substantially like thatshown in Figs. 1 to '7 of the drawings.
.'While I have shown and described a preferred mbodimentof my' in vention, it will be understood that it is not to be limited to the details shown but is capable of modification and variation within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is: 5
1. A door closer comprising an arm having an opening at one end, and a pivot member in said opening, a pair of members pivoted to said arm about said pivot member, one of said members being secured to the other by-"a' fusible link and 10 constituting a second arm of the door holder, and means for releasably' securing the other of said members to the first arm to hold said parts at a predetermined angular position, said means being independent of said fusible link.
2. A door holder comprising a pair of arms pivoted one to the other, and a member mounted between said arms, a pivot bolt connecting the arms and member, said pivot bolt being nonrotatably secured to said member and threadedly engaged with one of the arms, and the other of said arms being secured to said member by means adaptedto be incapacitated by heat 3. A door holder comprising a pair of arms, and a member disposed between said arms, a pivot bolt non-rotatably secured to said member and threadedly engaged withone of said arms, said member having a boss surrounding said bolt, and said second arm being pivoted about said boss and norrnally held against movement about its pivot by a member adapted to be in capacitated by heat.

A door holder comprising an arm, and a second arm pivoted to the first, a member coincidentally pivoted to the first arm, means adapted to be incapacitated by heat for normally holding said second arm against movement with respect to said member, and frictional means for releasably securingsaid member to the first arm, said means becoming operative upon relative rotation 40.

A door holder mechanism comprising an arm, a memberpivotally secured to the arm, the pivotal securing means being adapted to draw said memberand arm together for frictional ento said bolt and having an'upstanding boss surrounding the bolt, a second arm rotatably engaged with said boss, and means normally scour-- ing said second arm against rotation about said boss, said means being adapted to be incapaci-- tated by heat.

A door holding device comprising an arm having a relatively flat head at one end-thereof provided with a threaded opening, a bolt threaded in said opening, a member non-rotatably secured to said bolt and having an upstanding boss surrounding thebolt, a second arm rotatably engaged with said boss, and means normally -secur-' mg said second arm against rotation about said boss, said means comprising a lever pivoted to the arm and having a part engaging said member, 70,

A door holding device'comprising an arm having .a relatively flat head at one end thereof provided with a threadedv opening, a bolt threaded in said opening, a member non-rotatably secured to said bolt and having an upstanding boss surrounding the bolt, a second arm rotatably engaged with said boss, and means normally securing said second arm against rotation about said boss, said means comprising a lever engaging said arm and member, and a fusible link holding said lever in place.

A door holding device comprising a pair of arms adapted to be pivotally secured together at one end thereof, a washer-like member positioned at the pivoted ends of said arms, a pivot bolt for connecting the' two arms and the washerlike member together, means adapted to be incapacitated by heatfor securing one of said arms to said washer-like-member, and means for frictionally securing said washer-like member to the other of said arms upon relative angular movement of said arms. i

In a mechanical door holder and closer, closer mechanism including a link, two arms each pivotally connected to said link, said arms being capable of independent rotative movement under one condition, holding meansto prevent said independent rotative movement under another condition, said means including a fusible device which when ruptured releases said holding means to permit movement of one of said arms relatively to the other to close the door.
12. In a door closer and holder, two relatively rotatable friction heads, means to cause said heads to be frictionally connected on the one hand and disconnected on the other hand, said means comprising two arms, one of saidarms being rigidly connected to one of said heads, the
other arm being rotatably mounted on the other head, locking means when in looking position preventing the last-mentioned arm from rotating on said last-mentioned head and when in its unlocking position freeing said parts to permit them to turn relatively to each other, and a fuse to hold said locking means in its locking position while-said fuse is intact.
13. In a door holder and closer, closer mechanism including a link, two arms each pivotally connected to said link, said arms being capable of independent rotative movement under one condition, holding means to prevent said independent rotating movement under another condition, said means including a member pivoted to one of said arms and engaged with the other thereof, and a fusible link for holding said member in operative position.
14. Ina door holder and closer, a closer arm, a link, a friction head at one end of said closer arm, a second friction head, a screw connection between said heads to move the same toward and away from each other for frictional engagement and disengagement, a pivotal connection between the link and said second friction head,-means to lock said link to said second friction head to prevent relative turning movement between said,
parts, and a fusible device to release said lock and disengagement, a pivotal connection between the other of said members and said second friction head, means to lock said pivotal connection against movement to prevent relative turning movement between said parts, and a fusible device to release said lock in case of fire to permit the closer to shut the door.
