The spring 33 is provided with a lateral projection 3| which projects through an opening 32 in the plate IE and is disposed at any suitable distance from the free end of the spring. Another lateral projection in the form of a lug 33 is secured to the spring 39 preferably adjacent the free end thereof, and this projection 33 eX- tends through an opening 34 in the plate i6 and is adapted to enter a slot 35 in the check carrier slide I9, for a purpose to be set forth. The projection 3I is of such a length that it will enter` the check seat 24 through the side thereof when the check seat is adjacent thereto, and at the same time the lug or projection 33 will under the inuence of the inherent resiliency of the .spring 30, be projected into the slot 35 of the check carrier I9. The projection 3l is so located that as the check seat 24 is moved into position to receive the check, a portion of the check carrier I9 will vengage the projection 32 by reason ofthe inclined surface 33 of the check carrier I9 contacting with the end of the projection 3|. This will also retract the projection 33 and cause Ait to move out of the'slot 35.
When the projection 33 is in the slot 35, it will be manifest that the check carrying slide I9 cannot be moved forwardlyby reason of the lug 33 engaging the end of the slot. This will be the condition when a thin check is inserted in the check seat.
When, however, a check or token of the proper size and denomination is inserted in the check seat and the check carrier I9 moved forwardly, the checkv will engage the projection 3| to move it out of the check seat and press back the spring 3l),y causing the lug 33 to be Withdrawn from the slot 35 in the check carrier slide I9, thereby permitting the check carrier to be moved forwardly to the full extent of its movement.
Arranged adjacent the path of movement of the check in the check carrier is a magnet 31 which is supported for lateral movement preferably by means of a flat or leaf spring 38 at its end as at 39, the end to which the ymagnet is attached being free for lateral movement. The
magnet 31 is preferably of a horse shoe or U shaped type, and as the side of the check seat 24, which moves adjacent the magnet, is opened, an iron check inserted in the check seat will be attracted by the magnet and moved laterally out of the check seat. The magnet being mounted upon the leaf spring 33 is itself adapted to be bodily moved laterally-so as to completely remove the spurious check from the check seat (see Figure 9).
Any suitable means may be provided for thus .moving the magnet, but a simple and efcient means embodies a lug or projection 40 (see particularly Figures 3 and 4) which is adapted to engage a portion 4I carried by the spring 33, t -e extremities of such portion being deiiected as at 42-43, so as to facilitate the passing of the projection-40 under the portion 4I of the spring 38, thereby moving the spring 38 to the position shown in Figure .4, and with it the magnet 31, thereby completely removing the attracted token from the check seat.
A nger 44 may be provided which is suitably supported and arranged to pass between the legs of the magnet 31. This finger is preferably stationary and passes between the legs of the magnet when the latter is bodily shifted, so as to engage the token carried by the magnet to detach the sametherefrom so that the token will drop or be ejected. l
Carried also by the portion 4I of the spring 38 is a laterally projecting finger 45 which is adapted to enter the check seat through the side thereof, when the check seat is in proximity to the nger and under the influence of the inherent resiliency of the 'spring 38, force the check or token, should the latter reach this point in the operation of the machine, through an opening 46 (see also Figure 11) in the plate I5 and thereby eject the token from the check carrier at the proper time in the cycle of operation of the device. The finger 45 will be permitted to move in a direction to enter the check seat and force the check therefrom by reason of the projection 4B on the check carrier member I9 passing out of engagement with the body portion of the part 4I of the spring 38 and moving into proximity to the deflected extremity v43. At the time that the finger 45 enters the check 'seat 24 the magnet 31 will be moved back to its normal position to stand adjacent the side ofthe check seat or from the position shown in Figure 4 back to the position shown in Figure 1.
The forward movement of the check carrier member I9 will be limited by means of a pin 41 carried by the check carrier member I9 engaging the end of a slot 48 (see Figure 3) in the plate I8. Likewise the .return movement under the stress of the spring 26, may be limited by the engagement of the pin 41 with the other end of the slot 48, instead of the check carrier being limited in its return movement by the engagement ofthe knob or handle 22 with the end of the slot 2|.
The member I1` is provided in its lower edge with a series of ratchet teeth 49 (see particularly Figure 3) with which a pawl 59 co-operates, the pawl being controlled by a spring 5I. This pawl 5@ is so arranged and the number of teeth 49 are such that after the pawl passes over one of the teeth 49 the check carrier I9 cannot be returned until it has reached the limit of its movement in a forward direction and sufficiently far to cause .thefpawl 59 to pass out of engagement with the teeth 49 to be reversed by the spring 5i Yso that the check carrier I9 may be returned to normal position.
The reciprocatory'Y movement of the check carrier H9 is transmitted to an arm or lever 52 which is pivotally mounted as at 53 to a Xed support and the other end of the lever may be connected to the mechanism which is to be operated. A link 54 is pivotally connected by oneend as at 55 with the lever 52, and this .link is preferably provided with a slot 59 therein, and into which slot the pin or projection 41 carried ,by the check vcarrying member or slide I9 projects.

This dog 62 is pivotally mounted as at B3 and isrprovided with a lug orpin 64 (see also Figure 1)l which passes through a slot' 65` in the member I1 and into a.

, In the event that a thin check or `token is inserted in the check seat, the projection 3| on the spring will be held by the spring Within the check seat and the edge of the check seat will abut the projection 3I and also the projection 33 on the spring 3l]` will be held Within the slot 35 of theV check carrier |9'and the 4end of the s101535 Will contact with the projection 33.
It will therefore be manifest that with this improved construction the checks will be detected and all checks or tokens except thel ones of proper size and denomination, will be prevented from entering the mechanism.
While the preferred form ofthe invention has been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changesmay be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, Within ythe scope of the claims, Without departing from the spirit of this invention.

In combination, a check carrier having a check seat, a locking `device normally limiting the movement of the check carrier in the absence of a proper check in the seat, means connected with said locking device and adapted tobe engaged by a lateral face of the check to render the locking device inactive, there being a delivery outlet through which the check is adapted to pass when the check seat is in alinement with said outlet, an ejector for displacing the check laterally from its seat and delivering the same through said outlet, and means responsive to the actuation of the check carrier for temporarily rendering said ejector inactive.
2. In combination, a check carrier having a check seat, a locking device normally limiting the movement of the check carrier in the absence of a proper check in the seat, means connected with said locking device and adapted to be engaged by a lateral face of the check to render the locking device inactive, there being a delivery outlet through which the check is adapted to passwhen the check seat is in alinement with said outlet, means responsive in its operation to the actuation of the check carrier for displacing the check laterally from its Seat and delivering the `same through said outlet, the last said means embodying an ejector, means tending normally to move the ejector in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the check in the check carrier, and means operatively connected with the check carrier and operating totemporarily move said ejector against the stress of the last said means to permit the check to move to a position adjacent said delivery outlet to be ejected therethrough by said ejector.

In combination, a check carrier having a check seat, a locking device normally limiting the movement of the carrier in the absence of a proper check in the seat, means connected with said locking device and adapted to be engaged by a lateral face of the check in the seat to render the locking device inactive, there being a delivery outlet through which the check is adapted to pass when the checkseat is in alinement with said outlet, an ejector for displacing the check laterally from its seat and delivering the same into said outlet, means responsive in its operation to the actuation of the check carrier for temporarily rendering the ejector inactive, and a magnet arranged adjacent the path of movement of the check in the carrier for laterallyremoving an improver check from the check seat before said seat moves into alinement with said delivery outlet.

In combination, a check carrier having a check seat, a locking device normally limitingthe movement of the carrier inthe absence of a proper check in the seat, means connected with said locking device and adapted to be engaged by a lateral face of the check in the seat to render the locking device inactive, there being a delivery outletthrough which the check is adapted to pass when the check seat is in alinement with said outlet, means separate from the said looking device and responsive in its operation to the actuation of the check carrier for displacing the check laterally from its seat and delivering the same into said outlet, a bodily movable magnet arranged adjacent the path of movement of the check in the check seat for laterally removing an improper check from ther check seat before said check seat moves into alinement with said delivery outlet, and means for thus bodilymoving said magnet.
5; In combination, a check` carrier having a check seat, a locking device normally limiting the movement of the carrier in the absence of a proper check in the seat, means connectedwith said locking device and adapted to be engaged by a lateral face of the check in the seat to render the locking device inactive, there being a delivery outlet through which the Check is adapted tol pass when the check seat is in alinement with said outlet, means separate from the saidllocking'device and responsive in its operation to the actuation of the check-carrier for displacing the checkl laterally from its 'seat and delivering the same into Vsaid outlet, a bodily movable magnet for laterally removing an improper check from the seat before said check seat moves into alinement with said delivery outlet, means tending normally to move said magnet adjacent the path of movement of the check in said check seat, and means for moving the magnet in the oppositedirection.

In combination, a check carrier having a check seat, a locking device normally limiting the movement of the carrier in the absence of a proper check vin the seat, means connected with said locking device Yand adapted to be engaged by a lateral faceof the check in the seat torrender the locking device inactive, there being a delivery outlet through which the check is adapted to pass when the check seat is in alinement With said outlet, means separate from the locking device and responsive in'its operation to the actuation of the check carrier for displacing the check laterally `from the seat and delivering the ysame into said outlet, a bodily movable magnet for laterally removing an improper check from the seatbefore said check seat moves into alinement with said delivery outlet, means tending normally to move said magnet adjacent the path of movement of the check in said check seat, and means connected with the check carrier and adapted to engage and move the magnet support for moving the magnet Vin one direction.

In combination, a reciprocable slide having a check seat therein provided with an entrance opening and open sides, a stop for limiting the movement of the slide in the absence of a proper check in said seat, means adapted to be engaged by a lateral face of a check in the seat to render the said locking means inactive, there being a delivery outlet into alinement with Which the check seat is movable, a spring actuated ejector adapted to engage a lateral face oi the check and eject the same laterally from said seat to said delivery outlet, and means carried with the check carrier slide and adapted to engage a portion or said ejector and move the ejector into an inoperative position against the stress of said spring until the check -assumes a position adjacent Ysaid delivery outlet. y

In combination, a reciprocable slide having a checklseat therein provided With an entrance opening and open sides, a stop for limiting the movement of the slide in the absence of a proper checlrr in said seat, means adapted to be engaged by a lateral face of a check` in the seat to render the said limiting means inactive, there being a delivery outlet into alinement With `which the check seat is movable, a spring actuated ejector .adapted to engage a lateral face oi the check and eject the same laterally from said seat to said deliverf outlet, means carried with the check carrier slide and adapted to engage a portion of said ejector and move the ejector into' an inoperative position against the stress of said spring until the check assumes a position adjacent said delivery outlet, and a magnet arranged adjacent thelpath of movement of*V the check in the check seat and operatingl to laterally removean 'improper check from said seat before the latter reaches saiddelivery outlet. n

In combination, a reciprocableV slide having a check seat therein provided with an entrance opening and open sides, a stop for limitwas@ the check seat is movable, a spring actuated ejector separate from the said limiting means and adapted to engage a lateral face of the check and eject the same laterally from said seat to said delivery outlet, means carried with the check carrier slide and adapted to engage a portion of said ejector and move the ejector into an inoperative position against the stress of said spring until the check assumes a position adjacent said delivery outlet, Aa bodily movable magnet arrangedl adjacent the path of movement of the check in the check seat and operating to laterally remove an improper check laterally from said seat before the latter reaches said delivery outlet, and means connected with said check carrier for laterally moving said magnet.

In combination, a check carrier slide having a reciprocable check seat, a locking device normally limiting the movement of the carrier in the absence of a proper check in the seat, means connected with said locking device and adapted to be engaged by a lateral face of the check in the seat to render the locking device inactive, there being a delivery outlet through Which the check is adapted to pass when the check seat is in alinement with said outlet, means separate from said locking device and responsive in its Yoperation to the actuation of the check carrier for displacing the check laterally from its seat and delivering the same into said outlet, a bodily movable magnet for laterally removing an improper check from the seat before said check seat moves into alinement with said delivery outlet, means tending normally to move said magnet adjacent the path of movement of the check in said lcheck seat, means for moving the magnet in the opposite direction, and a stripping device for removing the check from said magnet when the check is removed from the seat by the magnet, said stripping device and said magnet being movable one with relation to the other.

In combination, a reciprocable slide having a check seat therein open at the side, means for limiting the movement of the slide in the absence of a proper check in the seat, means separate from said locking means for ejecting a proper check laterally from the seat at a predetern-lined time in the `cycle of operation of the slide, a magnet adjacent the path of movement of an open side of the seat for laterally removing an improper check from said seat, the said magnet being mounted upon said ejecting means and for bodily movement towards and away from the open side of said seat, means for thus moving the ejecting means and with it the magnet, a stationary element arranged in the path of movement of the check by the magnet and adapted to engage a portion of such check to strip or detach the check from the magnet.

In combination, a reciprocable slide hav-V ing a check seat therein open at the side, means for limiting the movement of the slide in the absence of a proper Vcheck in the seat, means separate from the said ejecting means for ejecting a proper check laterally from the seat at a predetermined time in .the cycle of operation of the slide, a magnet connected to and movable with said ejecting means and disposed adjacent the path of movement of an open side of the seat for laterally removing an improper check from said seat, the said magnet being bodily movable towards and away from the open side of said seat, means for thus moving the ejecting means and with it the magnet, a stationary element arranged in the path of movement of the check by the magnet and adapted to engage a portion of such check to strip or detach the check from the magnet, said magnet being of a substantial U shape and said stripper constituting a finger adapted to pass between the legs of said magnet.

In combination a reciprocable slide, a check seat therein having open sides, means for limiting the reciprocation of the slide in the absence of a proper check in said seat, said limiting means being inactive until the slide is moved and embodying a laterally movable stop movable into and out of the path of movement of a shoulder on the slide, a projection carried with said stop and movable into the check seat through one side thereof to be engaged by a lateral face of a proper check and shifted thereby to move the said stop into an inactive position, an ejector for laterally ej ecting a proper check from said check seat, and means for temporarily rendering said ejector inactive whenV the slide is moved.

In combination a reciprocable slide, a check seat therein having open sides, means for limiting the reciprocation of the slide in the absence Vof a proper check in said seat, said limiting means embodying a, laterally movable stop movable into and out of the path of movement of a shoulder on the slide, a projection carried with said stop and movable into the check seat through one side thereof to be engaged by a lateral face of a proper check and shifted thereby to move the said stop into aninactive position, means separate from said limiting means for laterally ejecting a proper check from said Vcheck. seat, and magnetic means for laterally withdrawing from said seat improper checks which are capable of rendering said stop inactive.
